nope. it wasn't the reason bora broke up with sunwoo that he had nothing. first of all, they as a couple had no future at all. because they have same surname, which seems insane but back then it was illegal to get married to someone who have same last name. (just think them as a same sex couple, it'll help you understanding. so many couples were discriminated and they even committed suicide.) secondly, bora is first born in a poor family. she had to pass the exam, which is notoriously difficult, asap. because she knew her entire family sacrificed everything they had for her. she tried her relationship going but then realized she couldn't do both things. so she chose focusing on passing the exam. because it was not only her dream but also her entire family's dream. and bora and sunwoo as a couple didn't have any chance. not to mention he was a minor, smart and kind who had a bright future ahead. after she passed the exam and he became a med student, they both secured their lives financially. that means they have power to protect themselves. and same surname couple was not harshly discriminated as they used to be. and people started thinking the law about same surname marriage was against constitutional rights. there were nothing holding back bora any more. I guess it was because of the descendants tree. If two persons have the same surname they got to be related somehow, ultimately you would be marrying a distant cousin or something. In India too we have something like that in a smaller circle compared to the scale in Korean culture but it's not enforced lawfully it's just something elders scorn.
