so here’s the thing- i’ve always bought mine a half size smaller, because i personally feel like with a tighter fit, i can feel “closer” to the ball, which i really do notice the difference, especially when i wear laceless boots nowadays, its really a preference in my opinion... but 2 sizes down is too much

I played competitive most of my life. I wore 2 sizes smaller on my boots then in my regular shoes. After games my feet would be sore. But I always felt I had better control. I could feel the ball better that way. It’s not that rare...

I think he chooses to get custom made boots because I remember him saying in an interview, he didn't get new shoes every year or season, so he's probably just used to playing in smaller and tighter boots.
A big thing is it’s tight on the toes for you but remember he has the chance to customize his cleats . He maybe made the toe area wider or added a bit of padding and make the heel thinner who knows but they are able to do there little tricks until they find the perfect fit

As a rock climber!! I can totally understand Ronaldo’s thinking. Having a tighter pair of shoes makes the feel and sensitivity of your foot that much better. But we are missing the elephant in the room and that is Ronaldo’s boots are custom made to fit his foot. He might have a smaller heel and maybe the shoe covers a smaller portion of his heel so the whopping size differences might make more plausible sense. And if your making millions playing at the top of your game then, a little squashed in the toes is trivial.

Maybe Ronaldo couldn’t afford bigger shoes so he got used to playing in smaller ones
Chances are, Ronaldo's boots are made to fit the exact shape of his feet (every contour) with no extra spacing in them at the end of the toes, which would probably be closer to that of a 7.5. In addition, professional clubs have the boot stretching equipment to maintain the shape after they have been molded around his feet.
I actually about two three years ago put my friends football shoes that were two size smaller then mine because I didn't have my football shoes and when I shot the ball it was way more power full and I did some crazy shots! It helped a lot with my shorts but hurt my toe so I didn't continue with it
If the small boots are soft, they will stretch over time and feel more comfortable, and also mould themselves to the shape of your foot.
I tried this and lets just say I didn't play proper football or wear my shoes without my foot killing me for 4 months. My advice don't try this!

Massive advocate 4 the one size smaller playing boot.
A couple of points though...
1. Choosing a model with a broader & less pointy toe section is key.
2. Quality leather is crucial. Avoid synthetic, go 4 Kangaroo or Cow hide instead.
This will allow the boot to mould to your feet like a glove.
I find that none of the popular brands like Nike, Adidas or Puma ever meet my criteria.
I opt 4 smaller European quality brands from Italy & Spain instead. Kelme & Joma are great!!
The vapor 4 - 7 (superfly 1 - 3) from back in the day were quite a wide fitting boot in comparison to vapor 3's and vapor 8 which came after it, so going down a size or two I guess isn't too crazy at the time (depending on foot shape and width of your foot)

My sister actually told me that if you wear a smaller size boots you could really feel the ball better.. and that’s what i do. When i was still growing i would get new boots every year, because they would get too tight for me. But now i don’t get new ones that often, because it’s really better but not that comfortable.
One day i couldnt find my shoes so i had to wear smaller ones. My toenail went blue and fell off.
I did this for a season with hypervenoms 2 , the thing is it’s more about how you like it and how your mental is . Also it doesn’t have to be 2 sizes too small. Basketball players very often go half a size down for game shoes

The doctors'are full of it - because each of us are different. I spent 20 years (6 professionally and 5 collegiately) wearing boots two sizes smaller. I should also add that this advice was widely given in the old days. The bones are compressed in the shoe creating a more solid club for striking the ball. Not only that, but the foot does not move in the boot (as mentioned) and I only ever used the front of the sole for walking and running - never, ever the heel. I have never had any problems with my feet and I haven't laced up a pair of boots in probably four years (which are happen to be a pair of Ronaldo Mercurial). There is no discomfort in my feet in the 22 years since I've hung my boots. I also played every day throughout my 30s - no problems.
Another thing I noticed about wearing boots that are much smaller is that the boots last longer. For example, each boot that I wore this way I used nearly every day and they all lasted for years. I have a pair of custom made Pumas that I received from my days in Germany that were made in 1999 of kevlar, lucite and carbon fibre and those boots are as new today as when I first took receipt of them. I think it may also be related to the lack of foot movement inside the boot reducing the torsional strain. Of course, it could also be coincidence. But over the years I used different manufacturers' products and they mostly stood the test of time beyond hundreds and thousands of kms.

Ronaldo softens his boots by wearing them in hot water first. It’ll stop the pinching on the toes. You might wanna revisit after trying that, makes a huge difference. I did the same thing for years, played in a 7.5 when I wear an 8.5 shoe.

however, there are THREE takes to this issue:
1. people generally wear slightly oversized casual shoes, because it's more comfortable. but for performance sports shoes, you should at least wear one that's true to your feet size.
2. pro footballers do tend to wear smaller sized shoes. i forgot where i hear it, but there was a saying back in the days "the boots gets smaller, pants gets shorter, and hair gets bigger" (imagine maradona at his prime, with his big hair, tiny shorts, and probably small boots as well)
3. HOWEVER, the quote came from a time when all football boots were genuine leather boots. and leather molds to your feet the more you use them.
so yeah, if you're going to wear quality leather stuff like mizuno morelia or adidas copa, by all means go half or one size smaller from your true size. probably 1.5 or even 2 sizes smaller from your casual shoes size. but mercurials??? ronaldo is crazy don't do it.

I’ve been doing this since I was old enough to understand my own body in football. What I would do personally is I would warm up for a little while with out shoes on. To allow the muscles in my feet to get some blood flow and movement before squeezing them into my tight fighting boots. As this would avoid fatigue in my feet and allow for better performance from a physiological stand point. Also at times, dependent on the model, I would wear a half a size bigger on my right foot as it is much wider than my left foot. Playing with very tight cleats is really a whole different world. Regarding the touch you need to be more aware of the feeling and it requires some adjusting because there is less cushion with a tighter clear this is what you were experiencing. Also you were basically more engaged and warmed up to control the ball because of the previous session with the size 9. All and all players choice but tighter fitting clear in my opinion has a greater benefit this is how I have my son playing.
Honestly I've been doing a similar thing for most of the time, mostly because my shoe size with football boots always seemed to loose, so I've been keeping it around 1 - 2 sizes smaller depending on the brand (Nike are super loose for me while Adidas seem more tight)

You want to buy boots as tight as comfortably possible, so there is little movement inside and you have good control and touch of the ball. I buy them so my toes are right up against the edge of the toe box, but not squeezing them. I also buy leather boots so the toe box stretches a bit.

I think that there’s a big difference between being a pro athlete at the highest level and being an amateur athlete just having fun. First of all Ronaldo’s boots may have the tightness of a 7.5 with the length of a 9 or at least close to it, or have something to make them more comfortable on the toes since they’re custom made. Additionally I think that the little bit of advantage you may gain from a smaller shoe size is much more important if you are playing at the highest pro level than for those playing games with friends or even in a semi competitive league. At the end of the day however it comes down to what you like most and feel most comfortable in.

I used to wear a smaller size football boot when I was younger
My foot length is size 7.5, but I have a pretty wide foot which I need a toe box of size 9.
Because of this, I'm in my 40s with Bunion problem on my kick foot, and trust me this is not worth sacrifice your foot structure for it.
Always go for the bigger size so your toe can spread and won't cause any long term injury and you need to fix later in your life :)
*tldr* my right foot is now much better, still a trace of bunion which can be painful if I have to play 90 minute game. These days I'm really a keen barefoot shoes runner, and toe socks.
