    I got an expensive laptop and I go to Thailand so this would go great for me and amount of Joules in this thing is insanely high for a travel surge protector

    OOh, I gotta get this. It's looks better than my Belkin mini surge protector. I like that it has a cord, mine just goes directly into the wall and doesn't give a lot of flexibility for space.

      Yes! It’s so good because it does all the things and is still relatively compact! That cord has saved my skin many times.

    Can't emphasize enough that this and devices like it DO NOT convert voltage and merely pass it through, and if you have a device that isn't dual voltage and you want to plug it into this in a country that uses a voltage standard different from what your device uses, then you have to use a voltage converter with it, at either the plug or outlet end. You'll also need a plug adapter to be able to use it abroad (unlike outlets there's no good way to design a multi-system plug).
    Also, I wouldn't rely on the surge protection feature of this and similar devices too much as their wear out over time with use and once a surge passes through it, it almost always fries the surge protection circuitry inside rendering it useless for future surge protection, putting your devices at risk.
    And since there's no easy way to tell if this has happened, it's best to not use sensitive devices in places with unreliable power, or during storms, or else invest in a heavy duty (and just plain heavier) surge protector that can withstand multiple surges if you're going to be in a place with unreliable power or lots of storms for an extended period of time.
    But, used properly, devices like this are really useful. I recently bought a similar device for use abroad on a 6+ week trip, and it worked great. I just made sure to bring the right plug adapters since we were in multiple countries that used various plug types.

      Great point about voltage conversion! Luckily most electronics are dual voltage; it's appliances like hair dryers that are more problematic.

    Nice review and addition. On my list of additions for my pending trip this coming may.
    Would love to see your recommendations for a portable Bluetooth stereo speaker. I have my old go to Apatronix AX400. Very small, but has an incredible base for its size (no longer in production🙁), and comes with an audio or Jack. Excellent for laptop and smartphone use with speakerphone capability. 😁

      Oh YES! I ADORE my Bose bluetooth speaker. It's perfect. www.amazon.com/dp/B0748N1BZD?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzwisbre09-20&creativeASIN=B0748N1BZD&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.1X06ABR43NTNF&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_list_d_asin

    What kind of Plug is at the end of the cabel? Does it work in most countries or do you have an extra adapter which you plug in the socket and then the Powerstrip? I am from Germany so we dont have that Plug end over here.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  Рік тому +1

      There's a North American plug on the extension cord. And yes - I plug that into a plug adaptor which goes into the wall when I travel.

  • @DionsTravels
    @DionsTravels 2 роки тому +4

    how does it offer surge protection when the wall plug doesn't have a ground? 🤔🤔🤔

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  2 роки тому +4

      That's a great question, and I just went down a rabbit hole of research about surge protection and grounding.
      Turns out some surge protection devices - like this one - don't require grounding to function. It does this by transferring/distributing power so plugged-in devices don't get damaged if the voltage fluctuates or spikes. Similarly, the USB charging ports are temperature and short-circuit protected.
      Now...will this do the same job as a fully dedicated and grounded surge protector? Perhaps not. I honestly don't know.

    • @GtsAntoni1
      @GtsAntoni1 Рік тому

      Short answer; it doesn't, not properly. Which I guess you already knew.
      Longer answer; surge mitigation steps can be implemented, but without a ground more severe fluctuations will leak to neutral or force a path, causing fire.
      Interestingly, the US lags behind in regulation and circuit protection. You'll find most countries have suitable GFCI or other breaker solutions that adequately protect your equipment if you're in developed areas.
      It's a great device for travel, I'd buy one, but I'd stick to lower current devices and take surge protection claims with a pinch of salt.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  2 роки тому +2

      I hope you love it as much as I do! I never leave home without it.
      As for a travel adapter, I tend to get whatever is available - my criteria is that it needs to accommodate any plug, and plug into any outlet. It needs to be in one unit, and as small as possible.

      Yes I do. I usually have a universal travel adapter on me. But any kind of adapter can work. On my last trip I was just in Europe, so I had a European plug adapter which was more compact than my universal one.

    Hi Nora, I love that it has the longer cord (6 feet?) but I believe cruise ships do not allow cords with surge protectors. Do you recommend one that would be good for cruising?😊

      @GtsAntoni1 Рік тому

      No there's not. Generally speaking you won't find Type C at this budget; especially if you're looking for QC and PD certified ports.
      My advice, use a proper 65W Type C travel adapter for charging, and keep this as power extension and charging for your more standard 2.4A devices.
