Thank you! Great video. Just finished replacing the left stick. I've got rudimentary soldering skills. My only complaint is the right stick definitely feels softer in comparison. Anyone about to take the plunge I recommend setting aside time to do both sticks.
i usually dont comment on videos, but i checked this to see what others do to fix things, and based on both videos, these both will not help much when trying to fix drift issues, any of them 1) the first video suggested removing the retaining clip. this keeps the joystick centered to the button, making L3 and R3 easily clickable, as well as keeping it aligned. removing this may make L3 and r# harder to click, as well as making it more difficult to center your controllers joystick. usually not too much of a problem unless the game requires more sensitivity. 2) this video suggests using a screwdriver to adjust the potentiometers on the module. the fact of the matter is, those are turned by the module to express position. turning them will at best loosen any dirt that is in them ( which air would do easier) and at worse, will damage it causing more issues. if the potentiometer is off center, usually it is the module itself worn down. if it is drifting, the potentiometer controlling that axis is either dirty or worn. if dirty ,it needs cleaning with air or alcohol, and if worn, it needs replacing. unless you have extra controllers lying around, the best option is to desolder the module ( or potentiometer, if you can remove it easily) and solder a new one on.
I'm late, but you seem like the type of person that can actually help. My potentiometer is visibly off center. I opened the controller on the second day to see why i was drifting, so its not due to wear. Am i able to recenter it? or am i just fucked?
@@internetcrap7 lol I actually fixed my controller doing what was said in the video. Though I do have a soldering iron in my room, I've been meaning to repair my tablet but havent worked up the confidence or motivation to actually do so.

Thanks, took me a day but so worth it i dont wanna speak too early as its only been a few hours since i reassbled the controller. This is also a good oppotunity to thoroughly clean the controller and customise it! I spraypainted the front and side panels silver, looks amazing!
I've got an Xbox One S controller that is drifting both up and down. Any idea how to fix that? Drifts more up than down but still drifting in both directions :-/
@@kaisersoymilk6912 Is the horizontal sensor just going to be on the opposite side of the vertical one? Also which way does clockwise fix for the horizontal one?
Well, i dont know if they changed out that black piece in the new controllers, but when you adjust it now(which you barely can, because the plastic is crap) the controller will no longer spring back to center.. Edit, i fixed the issue of not re-centering, but now my stick wont detect the down direction. Edit 2, After much adjusting with the controller plugged in and the Windows 10 Controller Properties open for viewing the center point, you can adjust the screw to try to get the axis back to center but this fix is a nightmare. It's certainly not 2 or 3 turns on the black plastic bit. Its barely a half a turn to adjust it now. i dont know if this is because of new components or what. I'm still gonna say, just buy a new controller.
It is worth mentioning that you must do full turns... a half turn will invert that axis of the stick. To remedy turn half turn in either direction to re-orient back to normal
This is late but may help someone in the future. Mine drifted up. Tried removing the grey clip. Didn’t do anything. So I put it back and tried this. It started doing what you said after I tested it. Kept going up after pressing up and kept moving down after pressing down. I adjusted the black thing back and forth a couple times. Couple turns clockwise and then back counter clockwise. I took the grey tab out again and everything worked good again. Basically a combination of both videos.
I have no idea how this worked for people. The black disk you are turning with the screw driver only turns when you move the joystick. If you turn it with a screw driver the little tab inside connected to the stick would break off if you turn it more than the joystick would move it which is about 180 degrees. When I look at the comments it looks like this worked for so many people. I have to be missing something, it makes no sense. Please someone explain this to me.
Exactly! I even took the little potentiometer apart to see if it was even possible that the black "screw" was an adjustable part, and there is absolutely no way! It is connected firmly to the wiper that contacts the resistance material. To turn it more than 1/4 turn or so would destroy it. This makes no sense. Did ALL these people have some other version that actually had adjustable potentiometers? I seriously doubt it. So the positive comments are bewildering to say the least.
Same here. I suspect we have newer model of the controller and the joystick is now a bit different. Just guessing, wasn't brave enough to use more force on mine. It the black plastic "screw" felt firmly connected to the joystick rod.
I desoldered and disassembled the entire switch assembly, and I'm not sure what turning the inner black portion is suppose to do except maybe break the support and/or knock it out of place. The greenish blue part you see looks like a rotary encoder. It's connected to the board with 3 pins and underneath the black insert is some flat copper that pivots when you pivot the stick. One encoder for the up/down and one for the left/right. The stick is keyed to the encoder. Rotating it does nothing except force the black insert to stretch and pop over the stick support. The only thing I can think of as to why this works is maybe because there's oxidation underneath and the rotation moves to a fresh copper spot. Caveat emptor
Thanks for the tip I just got this controller and it just went drift crazy!!!! You just save me money case my time to take it back to the store was up. Once again thanks my dude
My Xbox One controller's RS was drifting up, the camera angle always go up after I release RS and it was so annoying. I thought I have to buy anonther one, but thanks to you I could fix my controller. I'm very greatful.
@@Holyghoul no. In this video the analogs have black screw-like pieces on them to control its movement, he says to twist it multiple times in a certain direction to calibrate it. but for me (and apparently you too) after i turn it slightly in any direction, the analog moves in that direction but then i cant turn the screw any further.
Your solution worked but I adjusted the module the wrong way and rather than drifting up its stuck on pointing up. What would I need to do to correct it?
Tried doing this to fix my controller now it doesn’t even turn on but i am soo thankful that you’ve fixed my drift issue. Now I get to buy a new one that doesn’t drift nice fix dude
Lol you probably bent the pins that join the two circuit boards, or didn't get them lined up. When you had your controller apart did you see anything that allowed you to adjust left/right drift?
I honestly didn't think this would work but, to my surprise, it did. I'm probably still going to eventually desolder the stick and replace it but still, thank you.
if your good with soldering electronics then yes this is the way to go, by replacing the potentiometer joystick component, much cheaper to do than having to buy another controller .
The issue on my controller is that the drifting isn't visible, But it gives a command to go up/forward, You think this will still solve it? (Haven't tried it yet)
xbigcalx bro how the fuck you break a controller in 6 months like I’ve had my lunar white controller for a couple years and the stick drift problem has only just began on it along with the rubber grips coming off a little bit but I fixed it with some super glue
This worked for me but I have another problem as well: The left thumb stick is resistant to pressing forewords. I tried turning the screw clockwise (as I did anti-clockwise previously) however, that only caused down to become slightly resistant as well. So something's wrong with forewords on the left stick. I saw a solution to simply replace the module altogether but I really don't want to go there if I can avoid it! (Especially considering it involves ordering a part and using a solding iron and I really need to fix it asap.) Is there anything I can do?
Turning the sensor didn't work. It actually started drifting the way. So I replaced that small wheel sensor inside the stick itself. Now my controller works like it used to.
This worked thank you so so much ive been dealing with this issue for months and I finally did something about it and all it took was a few minutes something to simple to fix drove me insane for months you helped me fix it in mere minutes thank you I very much appreciate it!
This is not how it works at all. You cannot manually adjust the x y axis. Those slots on the side of the parameters is for the axle inside of the module to fit into, that moves the disk inside the parameter. These are not screws people. You will damage these modules permanently. Microsoft keeps its licensed calibration software to themselves because they don't want the controllers fixed, they want you to buy them. The only thing you can do that doesn't require soldering is open the parameters (two green tabs on the side) take the disks out carefully, clean them with alcohol. Then blow it clean with compressed air. Move the joystick around as well to get any debry out
Yes, it makes no sense that people are thumbing this up and claiming success when turning that screw beyond the limit of the knob will destroy the switch.
Craziness. I was convinced this wouldn't work, the thing that he screws isn't even a screw, thought for sure I'd break my gears of war Elite controller. Much to my surprise this has actually worked for me. Tried every other method on reddit and youtube and this is the one.
Hey man, thank you for the video, your solution worked and I am thankful. I have an issue with the battery. After disassembly, the battery won't seem to turn the Xbox controlled on. It'll turn on if I connect it directly to the Xbox, but it won't if it's just the battery alone. What did I do wrong? Did I pull the motherboard too hard?
Edit: Guys, after a closer look, I am changing my review from "worked!" to "actually this is harmful to the module". He suggests turning the center piece with a screwdriver. Well that's not even a screw, and what's more it does nothing. Took me a while to realize it, and almost broke the plastic center piece. Again - this is a bad suggestion.
SandblastedSkye there is another one of those little black circles try twisting it counter clockwise (There is a black circle on the bottom and right sides of the module) Right side is up/forward Bottom side is left/right
Worked for both controllers I had. I think I needed just a good cleaning . I couldn't get the right antilog stick to actually turn like you said in the video but it did rotate a small amount I wiggled it around and blew it out like an old nintindo game and got it back to new. Thank you.
Mine is a different model or something, looks completely different inside. Anyway, the right stick was drifting to the left pretty bad, so I decided to give this a shot anyway. Something snapped as I was turning the thing and the stick no longer works at all. Not mad, since I was about to throw the thing away anyway. Just saying, may not be applicable to all controllers.
Worked 100% in a JYS controller for Nintendo Switch. Just in this controller's case, there are actually two plastic screws that need to be turned, one for Y axis, one for X axis.
Hi man, I have a Xbox one s controller and on the mother board it has some type of orange tape holding a wire in place. The mother board won’t wiggle or move. What do I do?
I just removed the top face plate and cleaned the whole module with a cue tip dipped in cool water. You can do that people but, you have to be careful. If it is still a problem then follow these steps outline in this video and put it back together leaving the top faceplate off. Clean the module again with a cue tip dipped in cool water and dry. You should be ok. I fixed my analog stick drift problem so far and fixed my cousin’s controller which had a problem with the x button getting stuck. That x button clicks likes the rest of them now.

i usually dont comment on videos, but i checked this to see what others do to fix things, and based on both videos, these both will not help much when trying to fix drift issues, any of them
1) the first video suggested removing the retaining clip. this keeps the joystick centered to the button, making L3 and R3 easily clickable, as well as keeping it aligned. removing this may make L3 and r# harder to click, as well as making it more difficult to center your controllers joystick. usually not too much of a problem unless the game requires more sensitivity.
@@jakezepeda1267 Time to learn a new trade: soldering :)
@@internetcrap7 lol I actually fixed my controller doing what was said in the video. Though I do have a soldering iron in my room, I've been meaning to repair my tablet but havent worked up the confidence or motivation to actually do so.
Jake Zepeda that’s good. The instructions were unclear on this vid and I ended up f’n the whole potentiometer up. Oh well. Learned how to solder a whole new one on lol
Exactly the only real fix is to replace it perferably from one from another controller cause the ones u get offline usually only last a couple months then are worse than the 1st one u had the drift to i use to buy ps2 controllers to take there analog sensors outa to fix 360 controllers and they actually felt better thn the og 360s but thems to tall for newer controllers so nowdays i just order lots of dead controllers and just hope for the best instead of ordering chinese nockoff analog modules actually has worked out pretty good cause dead controllers usually died on people b4 they got broke in or a shit ton of wear .
For the last 2,5 years i had 2controlllers and only 1of them was working the other one had this drift problem that made it unsuable today i tried to fix this old controller of mine i was trying 4hours to open it because i had no idea how when at the same time i was eatching all kinds of videos (for the first hour i didnt even know my problem’s name ) until i saw this dudes video with all the good comms and saud lets give it a shot when i got that deep to the controller i thought that theres no way i hadnt srued up nothing and even if i put it back it wouldnt even turn on but.. IT DID. FUCKING WORKS . Dude i love u thank you sooo much
Tried all the other fixes to no avail, this one worked! Thank you!
Okay, so I know this vid has been up for awhile now. You said turning that turning the screw fixes the vertical drift in the controller but what about horizontal drift? I've got a serious drift in mine going to the left.
Man great video ... thanks a million !!! This worked for me . Was on my 3rd Xbox 1 controller , after continuously running into controller drift . You are a life saver
Is there a separate adjustment for drift left and right or only up and down?
Part 1 didn’t work for me, but part 2 did! Thanks so much! I was real close to selling it for $10 😂
I took apart my controller for both videos uploaded, it completely destroyed my joystick and I perfectly followed the instructions. Thank God I have a spare one
Thank you. I thought my controller was trashed. It works perfectly now.
you're a life saver man, i just fixed mine without spending $50 on a new one, thanks very much
Oh so I came here cause I thought my stick was being crazy and moving everything to the left, turns out my right bumper was stuck pushed in and was moving everything left after I dropped my controller, your video didn’t help me at all but I’m liking it anyways because a good thing happened to me while the video was opened
This video just saved me $60 bucks thank you very much for doing this video. I just took that grey little plastic out and worked perfectly.
Glad it helped 🤗
This worked for me. Thanks for the detailed walkthrough.
You the man! Watched one tutorial that told the watcher to, "break off a gray piece located on the side of the joystick module."
Thank you for this video. I followed your instructions with my controller last week and it has been working great since then.
Great video. You earned a sub for that. Saved two controllers and possibly a third
This just FINALLY fixed my controller!! Thank you so much dude!! Taking out the grey plastic piece did nothing. This worked with 2 counterclockwise turns. Thanks again!!
Austin Paine Can you tell me the tools you used to open the inner side of the Xbox controller was it a T6 or what?
Mine drifts both up and down.. how should I adjust it?
Replace the sensor
act on both sensors, every stick has two of them, one for each axis.
Hi, thanks for the vid. Can you tell me the size of tamper proof screwdriver I need to remove the screws on the PCBs pls? I can't find one small enough
This is some different content than I'm used to see in this channel
Thanks, took me a day but so worth it i dont wanna speak too early as its only been a few hours since i reassbled the controller. This is also a good oppotunity to thoroughly clean the controller and customise it! I spraypainted the front and side panels silver, looks amazing!
What if it drifts in all directions? Do I still just turn it clockwise/counter-clockwise?
Great detailed video!
Will this also work for the Xbox Elite controller?
Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
I've got an Xbox One S controller that is drifting both up and down.
Any idea how to fix that? Drifts more up than down but still drifting in both directions :-/
Same with me, have you solved the issue now tho
I'm actually following this video RIGHT NOW. It seems to have fixed the ghost drift on my right joystick. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!
My controllers LEFT stick is driftin' up AND down. What's the proper way to go ?
act on both sensors: every stick has two, one for the horizontal and one for the vertical axis (so, in every controller there's four of them).
@@kaisersoymilk6912 Is the horizontal sensor just going to be on the opposite side of the vertical one? Also which way does clockwise fix for the horizontal one?
Andrew Grant the stupid bitch wont reply
Did not touch my controller within a year because of the drift stick, decided to buy the tech tools to fix the controller and it worked. Thanks BRAH
Well, i dont know if they changed out that black piece in the new controllers, but when you adjust it now(which you barely can, because the plastic is crap)
the controller will no longer spring back to center..
My controler isnt even a year old and im having stick drifting. I hate this shit
It is worth mentioning that you must do full turns... a half turn will invert that axis of the stick. To remedy turn half turn in either direction to re-orient back to normal
And what should I do if my right thumb stick drufts up and down? (Drifta down when I touch it downwards and drifts up when I touch it upwards).
Sweet had stick drift left stick moving forward and I tried this now it’s only going forward thanks..
Same it's bs I can only sprint
Do not do full turns. There should be an app on ur system to check ur work
Same but right. Which is really annoying cause u always looking up.
Thank you for Showing how to fix a controller it works and I’m happy and I don’t want to go buy a new controller
Thanks for the tip I just got this controller and it just went drift crazy!!!! You just save me money case my time to take it back to the store was up. Once again thanks my dude
What do you do if it’s going up and down
My Xbox One controller's RS was drifting up, the camera angle always go up after I release RS and it was so annoying. I thought I have to buy anonther one, but thanks to you I could fix my controller. I'm very greatful.
Mine isn't doing turns like full 360s like a screw rather it turns the stick for the anolag stick one way
Anyone know how to fix?
Im having the same problem have you learbed anything ?
I think you just have to put the shell back on if that's what I was talking about
@@Holyghoul no. In this video the analogs have black screw-like pieces on them to control its movement, he says to twist it multiple times in a certain direction to calibrate it. but for me (and apparently you too) after i turn it slightly in any direction, the analog moves in that direction but then i cant turn the screw any further.
you can break the pins in the screws very carefully. make screwing them back in a breeze.
Your solution worked but I adjusted the module the wrong way and rather than drifting up its stuck on pointing up. What would I need to do to correct it?
Srg Alex did you ever find a solution to that? I had the same problem.
Just turn it the other way, it’s kinda sensitive and I think it only should need 1 full turn to fix the drift, not like 3
If you turn that thing at all a little piece can break off. You barely need to touch it.
Rip my remote
THIS WORKED!!!. The first fix didn't work but this one did THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!
Cyber Geeks As in gives a command to the game.
thumbstick movement itself isn't visible to the eye, But effects the game
6 years later. You're the absolute man.
Fix #3 buy another controller
Waste another $64.10 for it to break within 6mo. Fucking fanboys kill me. Iphone cunts
what so it can happen again with that one lol dumbass
Because of people like you companies keep doing this shit.
Warranty
xbigcalx bro how the fuck you break a controller in 6 months like I’ve had my lunar white controller for a couple years and the stick drift problem has only just began on it along with the rubber grips coming off a little bit but I fixed it with some super glue
Hey man if i do screw it counterclockwise will it stop stick drift in the left joystick or the right?
what if you drift left or right?
Jordon White left go counter clockwise, right go clock wise
left drift turn it clockwise and vice versa
This worked for me but I have another problem as well: The left thumb stick is resistant to pressing forewords. I tried turning the screw clockwise (as I did anti-clockwise previously) however, that only caused down to become slightly resistant as well. So something's wrong with forewords on the left stick.
I saw a solution to simply replace the module altogether but I really don't want to go there if I can avoid it! (Especially considering it involves ordering a part and using a solding iron and I really need to fix it asap.)
Is there anything I can do?
Turning the sensor didn't work. It actually started drifting the way. So I replaced that small wheel sensor inside the stick itself. Now my controller works like it used to.
Hemant Kumar Sharma same shit is happening to me. How did you replace the sensor?
This worked thank you so so much ive been dealing with this issue for months and I finally did something about it and all it took was a few minutes something to simple to fix drove me insane for months you helped me fix it in mere minutes thank you I very much appreciate it!
my daughter dropped my girlfriend's $80 custom pink controller. I thought it was toast. Thanks for the $80 saved!
daughter and girlfriend o.0?
Do you recommend this fix over the 1st fix?? Plzz replyy.
I just made my controller worse what have I done
Jose Gonzalez same 😫
Jose Gonzalez same 😫
Hey man, thank you for the video, your solution worked and I am thankful.
Saul Perdomo now my controller doesn’t look up or down you might be right
Thank you so much for this video! I ended up buying a new controller but now I have a backup again because I fixed the stick drift. Thank you my dood
What if your drifting left?
counter clockwise
Jiggaman _ mine is drifting left and right
counter clockwise
SandblastedSkye there is another one of those little black circles try twisting it counter clockwise
(There is a black circle on the bottom and right sides of the module)
Right side is up/forward
Bottom side is left/right

Can't I replace the sensor with a better 1 and then it would work for the the analog drift. Also mine just looks straight up instantly
what if it is drifting left
your a Genius, I just brought my dead controller back, thank you so much
Was playing cod and dropped my controller on the concrete outside came back inside and had stick drift, thanks for the help bro.
"Yeah so all yous gotta do is DISASSEMBLE THE ENTIRE CONTROLLER"
genius, why didn't I think of that.
Holly crap it worked! I thought I was gona break the modual when turning it only did one turn and it worked!!! Thanks man
Worked 100% in a JYS controller for Nintendo Switch. Just in this controller's case, there are actually two plastic screws that need to be turned, one for Y axis, one for X axis.
Hi man, I have a Xbox one s controller and on the mother board it has some type of orange tape holding a wire in place. The mother board won’t wiggle or move. What do I do?
This helped me some much the drift on my controller was insane. Thanks for making this tutorial.
Hope my Redgear Controller could be fixed. Haven’t tried this yet but which way should we turn the screw if it is drifting right?
shoudent you take into consideration controller layout?
and what happens if you over clock those screws?
So I fixed it but the turning is slowed down after I twisted the thing counterclockwise, should I keep going back and forth until it’s good?
I just removed the top face plate and cleaned the whole module with a cue tip dipped in cool water. You can do that people but, you have to be careful. If it is still a problem then follow these steps outline in this video and put it back together leaving the top faceplate off. Clean the module again with a cue tip dipped in cool water and dry. You should be ok. I fixed my analog stick drift problem so far and fixed my cousin’s controller which had a problem with the x button getting stuck. That x button clicks likes the rest of them now.
