Thank you so much! This video is exactly what I was looking for. During Thanksgiving of 2022, I saw banana plants being grown as a privacy hedge along the back of a neighbors yard in northern Delaware. They looked great even though they were going into winter. They were probably the same variety as yours. They never get fruit but they looked great. He said they do cut them down when they start looking dead and throw the leaves down around the plants as their winter time mulch. He said he has been doing this for several years. I must try growing this in our zone 5 here in northern Indiana, Thanks again! Very helpful.🎉
I just bought a pup online and I’m looking forward to growing it and tasting these seedy bananas (very carefully). In addition, the seeds can be sold for a profit 💰
So, ideally in northern Texas (zone 8a), we need a house with a south facing great room with 16 to 20 foot ceilings and a soil floor area. This will let the fruit ripen so we can enjoy it.
If you would like it for the fruit, yes. But the fruit are heavily seeded and therefore unpleasant to most. The leaves are generally used to create various items. No need to grow indoors for that. Also planted outdoors in cold climates for tropical vibes. If you’d like a variety known for its fruit in zone 8 you will definitely want to grow it inside. I recommend a dwarfed variety such as super dwarf Cavandish for that. No need for ceilings any higher than 4 feet tall. Great tasting fruit as well.
@@PlantFanatics The only problem with Cavandish is it could go the way of the McIntosh at any time. And seeds don't bother me. I believe these seeds will be fertile, unlike the bananas that the seed have been bred out of.
We can grow bananas on good years in North Florida... As long as they don't freeze to the ground.. you stand a chance but the trick is when they flower too early in spring.. you got to cut that banana tree down... Because it actually drags down the entire colony trying to produce some fruit before it physically can handle producing it and it will never come out right .. the banana doesn't stop trying to flower just because it's spring and doesn't have flowers or the capacity to hold good fruit... In the whole colony will throw its energy behind that dysfunctional rack of bananas so you just got to cut that early spring flowering banana stock down even though it looks nice
Musa basjoo grow well here in Ohio. I never water them after the 1st year, just heavy mulch. I have several hundred. A few other cold hardy also do well here - Mekong giant, pink banana and also black Thai. Pink is the most reliable of those three and is almost guaranteed to fruit.
You can buy it on eBay or Etsy. It's pretty common. It will die back to the ground in temps below 32 but will come back. If you insulate it over the winter, there's a chance more will survive.
My young pawpaw tree got mistaken for a weed and cut down last year. I planted two musa banana plants on either side (and forward of my poor deceased pawpaw. But now my pawpaw has green leaves sprouting from the little stump! Yay. Now they'll be banana trees & pawpaw trees.
This is not true I have some, this is the 3rd year and freeze killed it this past winter, but in late April 24 it started coming to life and in Oct. 2024 I found a flower with 3 rows of bananas so they do make fruit!! 😱🤯
Yes, they do fruit. However, they are not palatable and are very seedy. They will also not have time to ripen in a cold climate. Mine get flowers and fruit every year.

Fair enough! Good luck to you, and happy growing. Thanks for checking the video out!
They actually taste pretty good!

You won’t get fruit, but the leaves can be used for covering compost or covering a pit bbq.

What part if ohio you in? Im here in SW Ohio, and considering growing my first banana.
Where would you recommend getting a pink banana from?
@KyronCunninglinguist I'm in SW Ohio, Warren County. Brian's Botanicals in Louisville has a great selection in the spring.
Like Cannas. Almost exactly the same, but you can eat the tubers.
On my bucket list!
I love it how can I buy one of these

What’s the best tasting banana that’ll grow in zone 8? Thanks 🤙🏼
Are these edible?
My Cold Hardy Banana plant started to flower in North Carolina in late May!
So cool! Let’s see what happens next. 😀
One of y'all gotta breed a banana for zone 5, on golly 🥵
so, 20 degrees below zero will not kill this tree?
I want ALL the plants! Do you have pawpaw trees?
Yes I do! I love them so much. I’ll post a short soon!
@@RichardColwell1 I don’t think there’s many left. I’ve never seen any in the wild ( NC). I got some from my sister.
@@PlantFanatics I will be watching for it!

Great content! You're Crushing It Chad!
Thank you so much! And thanks for the amazing support!
Are there my bananas that are edible that you would grow in. Greenhouse? Dwarf varieties ?
Absolutely! Top one being super dwarf Cavandish. Check it out!
@@PlantFanatics
SUPER dwarf Cavendish? Is that not the same as a dwarf Cavendish?
is there a difference?
