  • In Matthew 25 Jesus separates saved souls from damned souls. The dividing line? Love. He lists the acts of charity, things we know we should be doing, but that often fall on the back burner. So, are you acting in love, are you helping those who can't help you back? Or is this a bit of a blind spot for you, as can easily happen? This isn't a condemnation (because everyone has blind spots) but it could be the wakeup call that helps you to change.

Oh my goodness what a powerful video! You are so right, Fr! It reminds me of a story I know of my grandfather on my dads side before he died. He would visit the sick often, and tell no one. One time, way before I was born, he visited my great grandfather on my moms side. My great grandfather was far from a religious man, and didn’t want anything to do with Jesus. He was constantly in and out of hospitals for a bunch of different health reasons. And my grandfather would go and visit him, and talk to him about Mary and Jesus. He would tell my great grandfather stories he never heard before, but he still had a very hardened heart towards the faith. He was a grumpy man, and didn’t get many visitors. My grandfather would be the only consistent one, and he’s not even related to him.
So he did this for years, and my great grandfather would listen because he liked the company when he was sick. Eventually, my grandfather on my dads side died pretty young in his 60s, before my great grandfather on my moms side. 3 1/2 years later, my great grandfather was on his death bed. My mom and I went to visit him, and with a gentle heart, he told my mom everything about her father in law, my grandfather. She was shocked, nobody knew my grandfather spent that much time visiting him when he was sick. He definitely didn’t need to by any means. My great grandfather was telling my mom all about Mary and Jesus and biblical stories that he learned from my grandfather all of those years before during all of his hospital visits.
He then asked my mom to be baptized that night. And he was! In the next day, my great grandfather died a baptized man.
Because my grandfather went out of his way to visit the sick, even though he didn’t see fruit of his work during his life time, my grandfather saved the soul of a man. His actions carried fruit even past his own death, to the point of baptism.
Anyway, if you are crazy enough to read all of that haha, what amazing things our not necessary actions can do for the glory of God! Thank you, Fr!

I think that's my biggest fear - going to my judgement and having Jesus say, "I do not know you." Love this piece - visit random sick people. And not just those who are physically ill - those who feel lonely and abandoned.

What if that's already my job? I mean, it isn't right now, but I've sometimes considered getting a side job in "home nursing" - which is basically going to people who need a nurse's service but aren't considered "ill enough" to warrant a place in a (commune-run - or is it municipality-run? Taxpayer-run, anyway) nursing home. Does it still "count" if I'm doing it for a little extra income?

But it cannot be done without genuine love. It cannot be done as a task or a bargain with God I do this but let me into your kingdom.
Because if you read the passage brother is talking about concerning the sheep and the goat the ones who are damned bring it out to Gods face like” what? When did we not minister to you? When did we not do this or that?
Their true intentions come out which was only for self interest and not out of love for love who is God and neighbor.
      1 Corinthians 13:1-13
If I speak in human and angelic tongues* but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal.a
      2
And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing.b
      3
If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.c
      4
      * Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, [love] is not pompous, it is not inflated,d
      5
it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,e(

There is no fear in Gods perfect love.
      1 St John
If you fear that God will tell you that then you need to reflect your own heart to see if you lack love.
For God is love and all who love know God.
Please read 1 St John and 1 Corinthians 13

@@thossi09hi I like to think that counts, I hope so anyway. I worked in long term care 20 plus years. I tried to bestow TLC to all my residents, giving extra attention to those who rarely saw family members, etc. As Saint Therese said, a little smile can make a difference - sorry not a direct quote, just a reference. I'm sure you will be loved by those who are considered marginalized by society. I loved my work, very fulfilling. God bless you!

He didnt have to die for us, just as He didnt have to create us. Yet He considered us worth making and saving. And we can rejoice in that. Some of us may dislike the fact He didnt have to do it and wish He was obliged instead. But thats not the essence of love. Being considered worth it even though we're not needed is a great good itself. In fact, there may be a certain beauty to it that obligation and being deserving dont have and cant bring. We arent necessary, yet we're very important. And thats beautiful and joyful. Being very important still.

When I was a Protestant, most of my fellow Protestants believed "once saved, always saved". I could never reconcile this belief with the teachings of Christ in the Gospels. Eventually I gave up!
Now, as a Catholic, I see how our theology is perfectly cohesive and compatible with scripture. We are called to continuous, radical conversion, to become like God. If any Protestant can make it to Heaven, well I just say "congratulations" and tip my hat to you. I certainly could not do that.

Thank you for this perspective, brother. Holy Spirit immediately reminded me of Jesus cursing the fig tree outside Jerusalem in the Gospels. It is not enough to simply exist and take up space...we will be judged on what we have done with this mission and grace we have been given.
As a Protestant follower of Christ, I know you and I don't agree on everything on paper...but I really enjoy your thought process and lessons. Let us strive forward in our sanctification...knowing the road has been made for us but we must daily walk it as His Spirit leads. Blessings my friend!

The most important we could ever hear is "come into My Kingdom". A smile to a passing stranger, a kind word to the checkout staff, a neighbour, done as often as we can, could lift someone's heart as we never know what struggles someone is going thru on any day.

Those are the goats. Notice how they bring it out to Gods face like” when did we not do this or that for you”?
One works out their salvation in fear and trembling but does not work for salvation.
One works for neighbor out of love not what’s in it for me?

    • @Catholic33AD

When one does everything for neighbors one doesn’t look to self anymore.
Self denial is difficult when one still thinks about,”well, what’s in it for me?”
But it is so easy when one thinks of their neighbors needs and meets them with unconditional love.

This causes me to share a few lines from Blessed Eleana Guerra found in the little booklet she wrote entitled, Holy Thursday an Hour of Prayer with Jesus in Gethsemane: " Among all these souls Jesus also chooses yours; desires it, wants it, asks it of His Father with tears, and for it in particular renews the offering of Himself. Behold the incomprehensible mysteries of love which operates in the Heart of God.

This applies to something I am currently exploring which is love as a verb vs just as an emotion. Love is an action not just a feeling because unfortunately we can’t always control our emotions but we can control our actions. You may not always feel love for that dear person in your life but you should always treat them with love.

Father, you can heal a sick!! That is what Jesus gave you through the bishop and the apostolic succession. You are able and all the priests and bishop are able too, they are busy and I understand they are not many, but Priests should believe more in themselves and have more Faith in God who really is the one who heals but using your hands and prayers and blessings!!! I know people who have been healed by a priest.

I always reflect on 1 Corinthians 13 and 1 St John love letters.
What good is my “good works” if I don’t do it out of love for others.
If I’m only doing for myself or my salvation?
But the faithful should not do anything for themselves since they are already redeemed and saved and so everything they do should be strictly for the love of neighbor who is Christ.
(of course one still works out their faith in fear and trembling lest one boast of his assurance become prideful and fall)
If you notice how the damned did a ton of acts of “good works” and bring it out to Gods face in a rude manner. “When did we not minister to you or feed you or clothe you”?
A humble and loving person towards neighbor does not count the acts of good work they do, they just do it out of love for God and neighbor so that through their good works seeds may be planted and bear fruit.
The goats seem to have done it for self interest, a bargain with God but mostly they did it with a closed heart.
They thought that by their good works that they will surely walk right into heaven all the while hating their neighbor and practicing sins.

I don't know what to do because I AM a sick person, I am imprisoned in 800 billion billion ways, I I just feel like God is saying he doesn"t know me because I cant give what I don't have and I don't have it because he doesn't give it because I don't give it because I don't have it. and the reason I feel like I have nothing is because Jesus says he will say he doesn't know me unless I love like I can't. if he said he knows me and loves me whether I feed other people or not, then I would just trust that God would give me what I need to feed other people and everything would be ok. I feel like issac and like we're going for a sacrifice and I don't see a sheep and I'm scared its me. Why would Jesus say he doesn't know someone who doesn't give food to the hungry when the whole reason He died for us is because we have nothing to give because we're too hungry? It feels like he's saying he'll only die for people who don't need Him to die for them like I don't understand why God doesn't come be with me in a way that feeds me before He asks me to give like that. I go to mass but I don't feel filled up, I feel more and more hungry, and I just keep hoping and waiting for when I see the truth and actually feel satisfied because I feel reality, and who could be hungry after recieving God, but it is so hard, if Jesus says He doesn't know me then has He still died for me? Have I really recieved God if I'm still hungry or have I just commited another horrible sacrelidge by assuming God will jsut fix me enough to recieve communion? My perceptions are definitely screaming that I'm still alone and unworthy and just recieved my own death and destruction, and I think I believe my perceptions are wrong and I'm supposed to have more faith and hope and trust, but for a schizophrenic person to constantly be fighting their perceptions of reality while also constantly fighting to keep a grip on reality is exhausting and to say the very least completely destabilizing. Please pray for me that that fight come to an end, I'm just so exhausted. it just makes me feel so alone and scared and sad, I choose to love Jesus but what good is that when my choice doesn't mean anything because I can't choose to be poorer or miserabler than I am because it results in me losing even the illusion of self control, like when I try I just hurt my family because I'm autistic and I melt down and scream at people and hit myself and cause trauma and damage and fear, and I'm also schizophrenic and when I push myself past a point I crack, I start hearing voices andnchasing delusions and endangering my life and scaring the ever living daylights out of my family, like that is literally what happens when I deny myself, my family protects me and provides for me and WANTS me, but when I'm protected and provided for then God no longer wants me or even knows me? like Jesus said the sun shines on the good and evil alike, and it feels like the love of my family is just the sun shining on me even though I haven't done what God is asking, and it's only delaying the darkness that will happen when I get judged after I die, but it is because I literally just want to be loved, and supposedly that is what I'm supposed to want, I don't understand anything it is so hard.

I hear so much pain in your writing. I hope you're able to find some of the answers to your questions, but in the meantime, something I thought about while reading what you wrote - that might help, I hope. This was my reasoning. Jesus talks about giving to people - whether that's food or love or whatever people need, right? You say that you can't give what you don't have - I can understand that but have you considered that you may have ALREADY given to people things that they needed in ways that you didn't see, because they were things you DO have plenty of - but you're not seeing how being who you are is affecting those around you in small ways that mean nothing or little to you but that mean the world to them. That could be something like how youre giving your family opportunities to protect and provide for you in ways that contributes towards their salvation as well as yours, or maybe you're giving your loved ones your time by listening to them, and so on? It could even be something as simple as saying hello to a stranger on the street ... yours could be the only kind voice they hear that day. We literally walk through this world and have no idea how we affect the vast majority of people we meet - and I hope we all do it with kindness, love and faith. :) I hope that helps.

You are made in the image and likeness of God! Pray for the graces you need to reflect His likeness in no matter what your circumstances are.

      Please read 1 Corinthians 13 & 1 St John
It isn’t how much you give ,rather, it is how much of your heart you gave.

There are a lot of i’s in your comment.
It isn’t about self it’s all about Jesus and neighbor which are one on the same coin.
      You can still pray? Right!
He said to that lazy servant, you should have banked my coin in the bank so that it can gain interest.
Prayers ultimately get Gods interests and he answers them.

ThiS teaching hit me recently too but can laypeople even go visit strangers in hospital or prisons? I don't think you can visit strangers in prison. You have to be on that person's list. Hospital, maybe. But it's intrusive. I think it needs to be planned or with the church as a program. Most hospitals do have volunteer programs people can join. Maybe that? Especially in elder care places. The elderly are often abandoned by their families. Maybe they have volunteer programs too. Just thinking outloud

That's the verse of all verses I fear.
Doesn't everyone hope to hear "Well done my good and faithful servant....."
...But loathe the possibility that Our Lord will not know us and say "depart from me you evildoers...."?
I have used this passage of Jesus' words when "discussing and debating" people of other faith traditions, in order to show "them" that YES, what we do matters... for Salvation!
I often do these "works of mercy" you talk about Father, and then turn around and become a road rager, with all kinds of rash judgments about people I don't even know driving down the road, and filth coming out of my mouth against them.
No, it doesn't matter what you do, even in faith...if you have no love. (I say to myself)
This passage (as all others of course) of Jesus' teaching matters; and it should change my life....otherwise there is only a fearful expectation.......
    God forbid it.
    Thank you Father. 🙏✝️🕊❤
