Mine is labeled as a Stevens/Savage 87A. I purchased it from a guy I worked with for $20 because it wouldn't feed or cycle properly. The feed ramp was packed side to side with lead to the point that you couldn't hardly see the feed ramp. Every screw in the action was loose and some let the lifter assembly move back and forth. I moved it forward to cause the lifter to lift higher. After the cleaning and inspection it has run flawlessly for years, and I must say it shoots much more accurately then my new 10/22. I love my 10/22, it's just surprising how well the 87A shoots. These are just my experiences though.

The lineage is from the Savage model 6, Click/Clack Gill Gun, Many sold under various brands. I own the Stevens 87c. A good fit for an adult shooting 22lr. A bolt action version was produced as well. Well Made !
This model was the first firearm I owned. A Christmas present in 1974. I sold it after I broke the bolt pin/detent . I just found one a my local pawn in amazing condition. I’m pretty happy to finally find one. It was considered the most deadly gun by all squirrels in my yard.
I have a Springfield 87A that belonged to my Grandfather, given to my Father in the 40's after he was discharged from the army. It shoots just fine, and I'll never part with it. I inherited it when Dad passed away in 2012. Thanks for the video
Bought one today at a pawn shop for $80 out the door! My rifle is in great shape mechanically and has a great stock and a perfect bore. However there is some bluing wear on the barrel and some strange corrosion starting on the trigger guard which I will probably sand and paint soon (the only real negative on the whole gun IMO) Great video btw!
That looks like the savage model 6a. I have the savage model 7 the 2 are very close. Mine is magazine fed and is 22 short, long, long rifle. If I pull the trigger all the way and hold it the action stays open and it shoots semi automatic if I half squeeze the trigger it shoots automatic. It even says automatic on the barrel
That would be a fun little plinker. I think it's safe to say these rifles were built in a time where regulations were alot looser than today. As far as the semi to automatic is there any adjustments you have to make? After disassembly of mine a few year back the internals remind me and resemble a BCG of a modern AR so I can only assume since it will cycle all 3 of S,l and LR rimfire you would have to make some adjustments from changing between the short and long? Or perhaps how you say it's all in the trigger it might change? Either way when I had this rifle stripped down I know I need a new feed ramp and tension spring because it will only fire once and then fails to feed or jams internaly.
I have a Sportomatic mod.87a manufactured in Adelaide ,Australia under licence from Stevens/Savage of USA.I think mine was built about 1960 and purchased by my brother,who left it to me when he died ten years ago.It works well but I feel that it needs a new mainspring as it occasionally misfires.Sporting Arms Co. of Adelaide closed down many years ago so I may struggle to find spare parts now!
There is a comment here another guy posted of a website that has anything and everything for our rifles. I checked it out once and has the parts I need for mine but still almost a year later have not found the time to put towards ordering and getting to it. it IS a single shot when you block the bolt for the .22 short like you describe. pull the knob and cycle your self....you can do this with short, long, and long rifle.
I have a 6a but it has buckhorn rear sight and the charging handle is smaller in diameter . Was my father in laws he past last year and was handed down to me by my mother in law . It also has a stamped trigger guard . Also will not be sold but handed down to one of my sons . My father in law only had daughters . My wife the oldest . Trying to find date of manufacture because I was told he bought it new .
Anyone looking to date there savage 6a/Steven's 87 or any other variants of this rifle the early model ones like the originals which was the savage 6a made in Utica NY you cannot go by the stock because it may have been replaced but the sure fire way is to remove the stock and on the underside of the barrel is where you will find your serial #
they are very easy to convert to full auto i have had a couple of these guns and have one now but in semi auto and by todays standards they are still a very accurate gun and in many cases better then some new ones
Stevens 87 was the rifle i lurned to shoot with , sadly it was lost in a vissous brutal farm attack in Natal years ago , I have been trying to find one again but they are rare in south africa

Looking for info on this rifle, i came across your video. My dad just gave me one of these because he said it shot fully auto. I have not tested it yet , i am in the process of cleaning and checking the parts. It seems like an interesting 22 i look forward to learning about.

Untill recently i had no where to look for parts untill another viewer linked a company that caww rri3s everything for these stevens rifles. Its fun and interesting to research the history on them by the pqttent numbers tamped on the barrel. As fwr as shooting full auto it could be possible i suppose if there was any modificetion done to the action of it HOWEVER that is well beyond my scope of knowlege for this rifle. Seen a like new(NOS) one like this recently with a nice scope on it for $200. WARDS Springfield 87A. I thought after reading all the print on the barrel that perhaps it cycled shorts semi automatic like my Remington 550-1. So this is nice to learn how to run the shorts with it. Thanks! I have the rifle that my father taught me to shoot with. The ejecter no longer functions. I took it to a local gunsmith to see if he could repair it. He told me that parts are no longer available. I no longer use it but if I was misinformed, please let me know where I can buy parts. Just like you, there isn't enough money to purchase it.
from what i have found through the internet, these rifles were made from 1904-1953, however the design and style i find it hard to believe it is as early as 1904
I believe the year was 1938. Savage 6, Stevens 87, Springfield also model 87. they changed the model numbers as the gun progressed until, I believe into the 1980's as the 987.
Mine reads westernfield 87a picked up from gun broker for 100 a couple years back shoots very well better than my 10/22 almost as good as my glenfield model 60 by marlin.
I have two of these, mine are both Rangers and pre-war, one has two patents numbers, one has one patent number and a pending, I believe 1940 and 1937. I just bought some standard velocity 22lr to try with them.
i have an 87A. the black coating should be on the guard, the gun is heavy for a 22 but very stable (depending on stock) the gun is only semi auto with 22 LR rounds long and short rounds need the locking bolt. it holds 15 LR rounds. the bolt is held back after firing LR rounds till the trigger is released to prevent jams. overall the gun is one of the best starting/practice guns you can get. easy to strip, the screw he shows with the cracks holds the gun to the stock mine was valued at $300.

Wish I could help but not sure of your rifles receiver if it is drilled and tapped for scope bases. I myself am still learning about these rifles but iam sure someone here that has more knowledge than I might be able to answer your question
It's not automatic, its semi auto. The receiver is stamped for 22 S,L,LR so it can shoot all 3. The bolt handle for 22S has to be pressed in and it will click. You have to manually cycle the bolt, which in turn is how a bolt action functions. Also disassembling this rifle to find what needs to be replaced is very close to how the charging handle and the BCG of an AR rifle is built.
yea there are a few things with this rifle that i have in question as far as originality, the feed ramp needs to be worked on in order for it to feed, other than that everything is in working order, i would like to learn more about this rifle such as that date it was manufactured, the other local gun shop could not find anything on it either
I honestly can't answer that. Others thar have commented say it was one of the best rifles they have nothing but praises. This one still sits In the back of the rifle safe untill I can actually get (if avaialble) the internal feed spring that I need for it.
Wrong screw on the stock. Sling is aftermarket. looks like the trigger guard was sanded or some paint remover used. Not quite sure, but I think the front sight looks original.
Not really sure. My grandfather gave it to me when I was young. Never shot it. Went through it a few years back, replaced the feed spring and it shot once before it jammed. Was all gung ho to order parts and get it In 100% working condition and never did..... procrastination and other builds took up the time lol. One day though i need to get it done.
I love mine and would never get rid of it! BTW, you don't buy a barrel just to build on it. You buy a barrel to have as a spare for a gun you already have that uses the same barrel. That's called, 'spare parts'.
The Photographer I known but I have yet to have a need for a "spare barrel" on any 22 rifle I have. Albeit my Remington nylon 66,my 597 or Marlin 60. Now if you want to talk having spares for an AR platform I would agree 100% and say you were doing yourself a disservice not having spares on hands including more than one complete upper.
The Photographer unfortunately no, after this video the rifle has been in the back of one of our gun vaults and I take it out once a year just to remove the protective oil and reapply. This "project" of you will has escaped my mind and I got involved with other firearms. In this comment section however there is a guy that commented and was very helpful with locating internal parts as well as barrels for this model. That might be of some help to you.
lol....this is considered a highly regulated firearm in Australia...purely because of its action (semi automatic). However....i can purchase a 338. Lapau bolt action rifle...with little issue. Firearms laws work great!

just pulled my granddad's out today little resurce before work says 1938-1965 in 49 they started marking them with date codes mine has a number and an A stamped behind rear sight supposed to mean 1949 not sure if infos right but really accurate gun love it next day I'm off gonna shoot it probably first time in 30 yrs lol
I got mine for 75 bucks working and everything. It just needs a new shell lifter spring. It's in great shape too. Still have a lot of it's blueing. I'm probably gonna have it reblues later.
There is not to many people that does bluing any more. The chemicals are considered environmental unsafe and the chemicals are real expensive. There is a black Teflon paint that most gunsmith use now and it works even better than bluing. You also want have to worry about rust.

check out a company called Numrich on the internet I got an original trigger guard for my 87A and I have a American gun side by side 12 gauge that I have gotten parts for its 117 years old hope this info is helpfull.
one other thing the 87A is a blast to shoot and they are very accurate only one other thing dont lock the chamber shut with a long rifle the casing will swell up and wont eject, and you will need a cleaning rod to push out the spent shell I know I tried it not one of my smarter moves.

thanks! yea i have a little bit of work to do to this one before it is in shooting condition the spring from the feedding ramp needs to be replace, it will feed a round in, but the spring wont pull it back down..... amongst everything else and spring turkey season this may be a project after this month
I could be wrong going off memory but the ones stamped Springfield are thw earliest models when Springfield arms use to be located in utica NY. Then the Steven's name was added after an aquisition/business shift happened. All these years later and this rifle is still in the back of the safe awaiting me to order the parts I need. Which at this point in time I doubt I'll be able to find.

@JohnSmith-zx1bg spring for the feed ramp coming from the mag tube. If memory serves me correctly. After this video that's now a decade old I stripped it down, cleaned and oiled. Went to the range it fired fine but jammed and would not feed the next round. Went home, disassembled thw rest and found the spring to be quote stretched. It was amazing to me thought when I first took it apart seeing that it has what resembles closely to a charging handle over the BCG of a modern AR platform. Granted the AR style rifle is not young by any means but was still intriguing

There is a letter stamped on that rifle that will tell you when that rifle is made. This is just for and example, the letter A might mean 1990, the letter B 1989, the letter C 1988 and so forth. There is a chart that you can go by, but I don't have it at this time.

firstname lastname the spring that is attached to the "feed ramp" of you will for the best way to explain it. When I had it apart the last time it was all one piece minus the spring and it was stretched out. It would feed the first round but not eject and th as t was only due to.me having the tension to tight. But it will not continually feed even when manually working the bolt.

the Stevens model 87 came out in 1938 the first model being the 87 or 87b wired why they chose b for there first model it was in production till 1944 some were used as ww2 practice guns basically the same gun,as the model 87a..87a came out in 1942 there were a million produced the first year ,these guns only said Steven or savage on them until Springfield bought them in the mid 50s and they had it in production till 74 average price for the 87a was between $80-150 , Stevens 87b $150-400

@Trumplican iam very confused. In np way or anything I said I'm thos decade plus old video it was a lost relic..this rifle was given to me when I was 7 by my grandfather who was killed in 2009. I had forgotten about it until the day I did this video. After disassembling to take it apart as old as it was I was shocked to see how it was designed. I've got pics if the same gun and this thing is sweet, I got it from my son a while back, and stripped it down, cleaned it, oiled it up and took it out a week ago. I would say that I could easily shoot the eye balls out of a crow at 250 ft. This gun is mint and shoots very well. I have pics but I would need your email to send them to you.

I have an original savage arms 6A from the 30's serial number 912 in great condition I love this rifle but will sell for $500 or trade for a .223 I like this rifle but love the .223 more
Mine was also inherited and was very dirty the safety did not work the bolt wouldn't lock and it wouldn't feed at all I cleaned it really well and now it shoots like a champ I have since decided to keep it and pass it down to my son I can totally understand the sentimental value of this rifle
I bought mine in 1969. It was already old and well-used but it worked flawlessly and still does. And as many note it's very accurate. Not bad for cheap chain-store rifle!

You do know that if you don't lock the bolt, but hold the trigger after you fire it, it will hold the bolt open as long as you hold the trigger? That way all you have to do is load a new shell, release the trigger, and it's ready to go again.
@@The_Mycilium_Maestro I've had the whole rifle taken apart, all it needs is a feed ramp spring that i can not locate all the numbers on mine which I've been told are the patent numbers are on the side of the barrel.

Other videos mention this action as well and refer to it as a single shot type of action where you can reload shells one at a time instead of using the tube. this rifle WILL shoot shorts in semi auto. why? because it does NOT require blowback to operate the bolt. if you shoot it and hold the trigger without releasing it the bolt will stay back. what chambers the next round is RELEASING the trigger and the inertia from the spring and the bolt coming forward is what chambers the next round. so the rifle doesn't care if its short long or long rifle. all it really cares about is being clean and WELL oiled. any interruption in the bolt release and it will stop feeding. and it is necessary to completely dismantle the rifle to clear the jam. it is this unique feeding system that necessitated the many patents listed. as an interesting aside the Stevens arms Co before it was bought out by Savage INVENTED the .22lr rimmed cartridge
You know little about these rifles. The rifle is cycled by RECOIL. 22 shorts do NOT produce enough recoil to fully cycle the action. So NO, these rifles will not run Simi auto. I know this as a fact as I own a few.
Josh Simon yes you have to completely break down the rifle to clear a jam. the feeding system is inventive but finicky. it has been said that it was a solution to a non existent problem. there is nothing normal or standard on these rifles. so the usual tricks wont work.

The lineage is from the Savage model 6, Click/Clack Gill Gun, Many sold under various brands. I own the Stevens 87c. A good fit for an adult shooting 22lr. A bolt action version was produced as well. Well Made !
This model was the first firearm I owned. A Christmas present in 1974. I sold it after I broke the bolt pin/detent .
I just found one a my local pawn in amazing condition.

Bought one today at a pawn shop for $80 out the door! My rifle is in great shape mechanically and has a great stock and a perfect bore. However there is some bluing wear on the barrel and some strange corrosion starting on the trigger guard which I will probably sand and paint soon (the only real negative on the whole gun IMO) Great video btw!
Savage, Stevens and Springfield all made a version of the Gill gun, excellent shooting rifles.
I have a Stevens model 87D. Even though it's heavy for a .22, It's deadly accurate and the chamber vents make it very quiet.

That looks like the savage model 6a. I have the savage model 7 the 2 are very close. Mine is magazine fed and is 22 short, long, long rifle. If I pull the trigger all the way and hold it the action stays open and it shoots semi automatic if I half squeeze the trigger it shoots automatic. It even says automatic on the barrel
That would be a fun little plinker. I think it's safe to say these rifles were built in a time where regulations were alot looser than today. As far as the semi to automatic is there any adjustments you have to make? After disassembly of mine a few year back the internals remind me and resemble a BCG of a modern AR so I can only assume since it will cycle all 3 of S,l and LR rimfire you would have to make some adjustments from changing between the short and long? Or perhaps how you say it's all in the trigger it might change? Either way when I had this rifle stripped down I know I need a new feed ramp and tension spring because it will only fire once and then fails to feed or jams internaly.
I have a Sportomatic mod.87a manufactured in Adelaide ,Australia under licence from Stevens/Savage of USA.I think mine was built about 1960 and purchased by my brother,who left it to me when he died ten years ago.It works well but I feel that it needs a new mainspring as it occasionally misfires.Sporting Arms Co. of Adelaide closed down many years ago so I may struggle to find spare parts now!
There is a comment here another guy posted of a website that has anything and everything for our rifles. I checked it out once and has the parts I need for mine but still almost a year later have not found the time to put towards ordering and getting to it. it IS a single shot when you block the bolt for the .22 short like you describe. pull the knob and cycle your self....you can do this with short, long, and long rifle.
I have a 6a but it has buckhorn rear sight and the charging handle is smaller in diameter . Was my father in laws he past last year and was handed down to me by my mother in law . It also has a stamped trigger guard . Also will not be sold but handed down to one of my sons . My father in law only had daughters . My wife the oldest . Trying to find date of manufacture because I was told he bought it new .

Anyone looking to date there savage 6a/Steven's 87 or any other variants of this rifle the early model ones like the originals which was the savage 6a made in Utica NY you cannot go by the stock because it may have been replaced but the sure fire way is to remove the stock and on the underside of the barrel is where you will find your serial #

they are very easy to convert to full auto i have had a couple of these guns and have one now but in semi auto and by todays standards they are still a very accurate gun and in many cases better then some new ones

Untill recently i had no where to look for parts untill another viewer linked a company that caww rri3s everything for these stevens rifles. Its fun and interesting to research the history on them by the pqttent numbers tamped on the barrel. As fwr as shooting full auto it could be possible i suppose if there was any modificetion done to the action of it HOWEVER that is well beyond my scope of knowlege for this rifle. Seen a like new(NOS) one like this recently with a nice scope on it for $200. WARDS Springfield 87A. I thought after reading all the print on the barrel that perhaps it cycled shorts semi automatic like my Remington 550-1. So this is nice to learn how to run the shorts with it. Thanks! I have the rifle that my father taught me to shoot with. The ejecter no longer functions. I took it to a local gunsmith to see if he could repair it. He told me that parts are no longer available. I no longer use it but if I was misinformed, please let me know where I can buy parts. Just like you, there isn't enough money to purchase it.
from what i have found through the internet, these rifles were made from 1904-1953, however the design and style i find it hard to believe it is as early as 1904
I believe the year was 1938. Savage 6, Stevens 87, Springfield also model 87. they changed the model numbers as the gun progressed until, I believe into the 1980's as the 987.
Mine reads westernfield 87a picked up from gun broker for 100 a couple years back shoots very well better than my 10/22 almost as good as my glenfield model 60 by marlin.
I still move the model 60 but not as much as my anniversary Remington nylon. Just something about a tube fed 22

I have two of these, mine are both Rangers and pre-war, one has two patents numbers, one has one patent number and a pending, I believe 1940 and 1937. I just bought some standard velocity 22lr to try with them.
i have an 87A. the black coating should be on the guard, the gun is heavy for a 22 but very stable (depending on stock) the gun is only semi auto with 22 LR rounds long and short rounds need the locking bolt. it holds 15 LR rounds. the bolt is held back after firing LR rounds till the trigger is released to prevent jams. overall the gun is one of the best starting/practice guns you can get. easy to strip, the screw he shows with the cracks holds the gun to the stock
mine was valued at $300.
Mine is the Savage 6 by Sears and Roebucks. You can Mod A lot of these rifles to make them full auto but that is highly illegal.

You said you doubted it was a single shot and an auto but then you explained how it was a bolt action single shot for shorts.
It's not automatic, its semi auto. The receiver is stamped for 22 S,L,LR so it can shoot all 3. The bolt handle for 22S has to be pressed in and it will click. You have to manually cycle the bolt, which in turn is how a bolt action functions. Also disassembling this rifle to find what needs to be replaced is very close to how the charging handle and the BCG of an AR rifle is built.

yea there are a few things with this rifle that i have in question as far as originality, the feed ramp needs to be worked on in order for it to feed, other than that everything is in working order, i would like to learn more about this rifle such as that date it was manufactured, the other local gun shop could not find anything on it either

I honestly can't answer that. Others thar have commented say it was one of the best rifles they have nothing but praises. This one still sits In the back of the rifle safe untill I can actually get (if avaialble) the internal feed spring that I need for it.
Wrong screw on the stock. Sling is aftermarket. looks like the trigger guard was sanded or some paint remover used. Not quite sure, but I think the front sight looks original.
Not really sure. My grandfather gave it to me when I was young. Never shot it. Went through it a few years back, replaced the feed spring and it shot once before it jammed. Was all gung ho to order parts and get it In 100% working condition and never did..... procrastination and other builds took up the time lol. One day though i need to get it done.
I love mine and would never get rid of it! BTW, you don't buy a barrel just to build on it. You buy a barrel to have as a spare for a gun you already have that uses the same barrel. That's called, 'spare parts'.
The Photographer I known but I have yet to have a need for a "spare barrel" on any 22 rifle I have. Albeit my Remington nylon 66,my 597 or Marlin 60. Now if you want to talk having spares for an AR platform I would agree 100% and say you were doing yourself a disservice not having spares on hands including more than one complete upper.

The Photographer unfortunately no, after this video the rifle has been in the back of one of our gun vaults and I take it out once a year just to remove the protective oil and reapply. This "project" of you will has escaped my mind and I got involved with other firearms. In this comment section however there is a guy that commented and was very helpful with locating internal parts as well as barrels for this model. That might be of some help to you.

The trigger guard is original because i have the same one except my charging handel is different and my stock is a brighter color i paid 150$

just pulled my granddad's out today little resurce before work says 1938-1965 in 49 they started marking them with date codes mine has a number and an A stamped behind rear sight supposed to mean 1949 not sure if infos right but really accurate gun love it next day I'm off gonna shoot it probably first time in 30 yrs lol

I got mine for 75 bucks working and everything. It just needs a new shell lifter spring. It's in great shape too. Still have a lot of it's blueing. I'm probably gonna have it reblues later.
There is not to many people that does bluing any more. The chemicals are considered environmental unsafe and the chemicals are real expensive. There is a black Teflon paint that most gunsmith use now and it works even better than bluing. You also want have to worry about rust.

check out a company called Numrich on the internet I got an original trigger guard for my 87A and I have a American gun side by side 12 gauge that I have gotten parts for its 117 years old hope this info is helpfull.
one other thing the 87A is a blast to shoot and they are very accurate only one other thing dont lock the chamber shut with a long rifle the casing will swell up and wont eject, and you will need a cleaning rod to push out the spent shell I know I tried it not one of my smarter moves.

I could be wrong going off memory but the ones stamped Springfield are thw earliest models when Springfield arms use to be located in utica NY. Then the Steven's name was added after an aquisition/business shift happened. All these years later and this rifle is still in the back of the safe awaiting me to order the parts I need. Which at this point in time I doubt I'll be able to find.

@JohnSmith-zx1bg spring for the feed ramp coming from the mag tube. If memory serves me correctly. After this video that's now a decade old I stripped it down, cleaned and oiled. Went to the range it fired fine but jammed and would not feed the next round. Went home, disassembled thw rest and found the spring to be quote stretched. It was amazing to me thought when I first took it apart seeing that it has what resembles closely to a charging handle over the BCG of a modern AR platform. Granted the AR style rifle is not young by any means but was still intriguing

We are suppose to be talking about a Stevens Springfield rifle, instead of politics. I inherited one of these rifles when my father passed away. It had a broken stock on it. But I had it completely restored. It took me over two months to get a stock for it. But it looks like it just come out of the store right now. The one I have is all most 70 years old. You have to take it completely apart to find out how old it is. There is a letter stamped on that rifle that will tell you when that rifle is made. This is just for and example, the letter A might mean 1990, the letter B 1989, the letter C 1988 and so forth. There is a chart that you can go by, but I don't have it at this time.

firstname lastname the spring that is attached to the "feed ramp" of you will for the best way to explain it. When I had it apart the last time it was all one piece minus the spring and it was stretched out. It would feed the first round but not eject and th as t was only due to.me having the tension to tight. But it will not continually feed even when manually working the bolt.

the Stevens model 87 came out in 1938 the first model being the 87 or 87b wired why they chose b for there first model it was in production till 1944 some were used as ww2 practice guns basically the same gun,as the model 87a..87a came out in 1942 there were a million produced the first year ,these guns only said Steven or savage on them until Springfield bought them in the mid 50s and they had it in production till 74 average price for the 87a was between $80-150 , Stevens 87b $150-400

I had forgotten about it until the day I did this video. After disassembling to take it apart as old as it was I was shocked to see how it was designed. I've got pics if the same gun and this thing is sweet, I got it from my son a while back, and stripped it down, cleaned it, oiled it up and took it out a week ago. I would say that I could easily shoot the eye balls out of a crow at 250 ft. This gun is mint and shoots very well. I have pics but I would need your email to send them to you.

You do know that if you don't lock the bolt, but hold the trigger after you fire it, it will hold the bolt open as long as you hold the trigger? That way all you have to do is load a new shell, release the trigger, and it's ready to go again.

@@geohonsinger744 I don't hate with a pump action shotgun but this is a tube fed 22, why would I want to hold the trigger to hold the bolt open? Let alone I've never heard of a trigger having anything to do with a bolt open on empty design before.
@@upstatearms4 look up, "Stevens Model 87A , Scott hillbilly morgan/Kentucky " on here and you will see what I'm talking about. Other videos mention this action as well and refer to it as a single shot type of action where you can reload shells one at a time instead of using the tube. Not trying to start shit, just sharing the wealth 🤷

this rifle WILL shoot shorts in semi auto. why? because it does NOT require blowback to operate the bolt. if you shoot it and hold the trigger without releasing it the bolt will stay back. what chambers the next round is RELEASING the trigger and the inertia from the spring and the bolt coming forward is what chambers the next round. so the rifle doesn't care if its short long or long rifle. all it really cares about is being clean and WELL oiled. any interruption in the bolt release and it will stop feeding. and it is necessary to completely dismantle the rifle to clear the jam. it is this unique feeding system that necessitated the many patents listed. as an interesting aside the Stevens arms Co before it was bought out by Savage INVENTED the .22lr rimmed cartridge
You know little about these rifles. The rifle is cycled by RECOIL. 22 shorts do NOT produce enough recoil to fully cycle the action. So NO, these rifles will not run Simi auto. I know this as a fact as I own a few.

Josh Simon yes you have to completely break down the rifle to clear a jam. the feeding system is inventive but finicky. it has been said that it was a solution to a non existent problem. there is nothing normal or standard on these rifles. so the usual tricks wont work.
