  • The Garmin GNC 300XL offers a very robust set of route functions. However, as one of the first generation units, the interface is not quite as refined as modern day GPS receivers. Once you understand the layout and logic though, it does become more intuitive. And like any sophisticated piece of avionics, there is no substitute for continued practice.
In this, the sixth episode we will look at the flight plan operations. As always, feel free to comment or ask questions below.
The GNC 300 XL is part of the Garmin "XL" family that includes the 150XL, 155XL and 250XL.
IMPORTANT! This is by no means intended to be an exhaustive review of the GNC 300XL. It is an overview that highlights some of the product's key features. Viewers shall not rely on the information presented herein without first verifying the accuracy and applicability in the aircraft POH and official Garmin documentation. Instruction by a qualified and experienced instructor should be sought before using the GNC 300XL in the air.

Thank you so much! I have the 250xl in my C150, and your simple and clear explanation of Routes was incredibly helpful.

I am so excited that you're making these 300XL videos. I'm just starting to fly a PA28-180 with this GPS installed and your videos have been super helpful!

Good to hear Juan - thanks. Navigation page group up next and then we'll do some in-flight instrument procedures to follow.

At 12:21, you talk about setting the external CDI, but when you do so, the needle doesn't move. Why bother to set the CDI if it doesn't impact anything?

You are correct that in GPS navigation mode with AUTO sequencing, the course deviation indicator (CDI) will indicate deviation from the GPS course regardless of what is selected on the OBS. However, the reasons you would want to set the leg course on the CDI are (1) as a matter of good operating practice for situational awareness (the intended course should be shown at the top of the OBS or HSI so you know where you are going), and (2) to avoid constant triggering of the MSG indicator warning of a discrepancy between the set course and the GPS computed course for the leg. Of course, when in HOLD mode the selected course will affect the CDI and TO/FROM indications, just as with a VOR.

I have a 300xl and the map page seems very sluggish to update.. any ideas?

Unfortunately I can't provide much insight as I do not use the Map page (I have a Garmin 696). For the 300XL, I usually fly on the Route page. Perhaps some others can chime in here.
