Castor knows full well what Merrick said, I think he was just.... testing him. This IS the guy who punched him square in the face on the Judgement of Carrion, which knocked Castor clean off his feet and instead of shooting him dead on the spot Castor reasoned with him, even though he held all the cards in his hand. Castor knew. He just doesn't give a fuck.
It's what a good officer does. If word gets out that you'll tolerate direct acts of insubordination, your authority diminishes in the eyes of your men. So if a man says the wrong thing and you don't want to punish them for it, well... nobody could fault you if that recent shelling had damaged your hearing a little: you give them a chance to correct themselves.
Battleship009 The movie? It's an old classic from before color-tv was a thing. Has an infamous scene where the female main character departs in a plane, leaving behind these two ragtag companions.
In the Expanded Universe, they're badass as hell, except when spess mehreens are the protagonists, at which point the guardsmen are demoted to standard red shirts.
If there are factions in the Dawn of War franchises that I'm always loyal to, it have always been the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard. Always the loots with the best endings.
i want merrick. adrastia and castor to regroup again they were awesome. commisar LORD bern should have more lines so i can hear of his wacky tank adventures
Did Lord Bern even -get- a line in a mission briefing or a cutscene? Guess he's the kind of man that doesn't need to open his mouth to get his point across
God do I hope these two appear in the next game. Inquistor Adrastia... not so much. I especially like what they did with Merrick's character since Chaos Rising.
Why are Imperial Guard and Space Marines practically at war with each other? Aren't they the both human though? Havent read any codexes, just wondering if someone could clarify
when space marines are deployed it essientally overwrites any orders the IG already have unless told to carry on by the SM, normally that isnt an issue the IG just follow new orders from the marines but sometimes it can become a clash of important objectives so in the games they end up fighting each other
Alex Livings Space marines and IG have their own objectives. They also receive their orders from different structures, which means that in tactics they will follow their own orders but will try to help one another along as their orders don't interfere with each other. If they do, then its a battle till the death.
In this particular conflict I think they explain it like this, As the IG the Blood Ravens you fight are corrupted Blood Ravens and as the Blood Ravens the IG you fight are corrupted IG
because imperium has shitty bureaucracy and terrible command structure in this case for example most of the times ig would follow sm orders but if ig received their orders directly from segmentum command highest command structure in entire segmentum and there are only 4 segmentums in galaxy only the lords of terra and highest ranking inquisitors can change the order from segmentum command not even space marines and even space marine chapter master can change them if the orders are from segmentum command
To all replys to my comment: Space Marines are generally portrayed as American by defult, but with other influences (Smurfs are Roman, White Scars Mongolian, one of them is Native American). Orks always seem to be from Cockney Chaos is just crazy and insane. IG is different based on the planet. Cadian is British in DoW, but generally generic. Catachans are American. Tallarns are Arabs. Krieg is WWI German, ect.
@Orklord90 Dead Sirius. France (or what remains of it) is the fire alarm button. Mandatory fire alert exercises are executed 1500 hours on the first monday of every month. ... They use a converted Emperor-class battleship to "push" the "button".
@ExtremeFaggotry About Gabriel Angelos in the Dawn Of War (novel) its says that he was a Guardsman in Cyrene before he was a Space Marine and he Survived the Blood Trials with Isador
@AlexSaysHi2013 Low Gothic is the common language of the Imperium, represented by English for us. Its the descendent of High Gothic, which is represented by Latin and is supposedly a mix of all of Earth's (future) languages.
@Tharfias Actually he's right about the Death Korps of Krieg. They're based on WW1 Prussian soldiers wearing gasmasks. The word Krieg is even a German word, meaning 'war'.
@Tharfias Well perhaps not the famous spike topped helms, but not all Prussian helmets looked like that. Regardless, the helmet which is being used is definitely one of the Germanic armies, I recognize it. Same with the coat. For goodness sake, the reason they spell it Death Korps with a K is because that's how it is spelled in German. Plus, I've taken a look at WW1 French helmets, they don't look anything like the Death Korps.
@DarkCrusader7 ... Go look up the /tg/ thread called "The Ship"; it's about Warhammer 50k. "At the end of M42, the God-Emperor awoke, but briefly, to give a single command, a Divine Imperative; 'Build me a ship, that all of Humanity might be gathered in one place.' And they did. Lo and behold, it is now M51, and the ISS Imperium is slowly closing in on the Eye of Terror; a World-Ship so massive that Holy Terra was incorporated into it... as the Captain's seat. The Ship is All. The Ship Moves."
@1337Trapper Relic decided that the IG should be Brits, in part because they're somewhat similar to them in CoH. The Catachan Devils and Space Marines are still American however.
@Never3rd You're right in most of this, but the Mordians were supposed to be portrayed as US marines in dress uniform...How accurate that is, i don't know, but its from the mouth of the sculptor himself. Interesting point about the Catachans too, they have a special character called Sly Marbo...Marbo being an anagram of Rambo, and Sly being short for...well you get the idea. So definately American army Vietnam influenced.
@Never3rd They don`t. We Canadians like to think that there are a few of us in the ranks, especially the Valhallans and Cadians. Usually the one crazy bastard that kills a titan with a meltagun shot or something.
Cadians etc - Modern era International but portrayed as British. Catachans - Vietnam era Americans Vostroyan - Cossacks Mordian - Napoleon era Tallarn - Arabs Steel Legion - WW2 era Germans Valhallan - WW2 era Russians Praetorian - British Empire Krieg - WW1 era Germans Elysian - Modern most likely American Tanith - Celtic Commissars - Based on WW2 era Germans and Russians but British The reason IG are portrayed as British is because 40k came from Britain. Does every faction have to be American?
@Tommonius Well, year Steel Legionaires are quite German as well. As for Tallarns, I don't think they're so much Afrika Korps because I never saw Rommel as a fast attack/rapid withdraw guy, as per Tallarn doctrine. Could be wrong though. One of the good things about IG is that a lot is open to interpretation. Sure, Valhallas are Russan, but what type? Soviet, Tsarist-era, etc?
Krieg - WW1 era Germans Have you ever seen a Death Korp? French trench helmet, french trenchcoat and a gasmask with a design I can't really recall from ww1 but is probably of british design.
@capnazrael There are also weapons in the US that aren't made of lasers. The Catachans have a very 'Caucasians in Vietnam' feel which was no doubt inspired by multiple factions... just like all the others. They also fulfil the American gung ho stereotype.
@Magni56 Yeah his waqy of saying it is a bit too plain but at 40k everybody's job is too die even 4 space marines , no one will die of old age ..... kinda of a disturbing thought isn't it?
@yuyuyu25 The way I see it, there are no clear parallels, but some influences do exist. Valhallans are likely inspired by WWII Russia, and Vostroyan by Imperial Russia - Napoleonic wars, perhaps? Tallarn I'd say have some Lawrence of Arabia influence.
@Never3rd no they want it to be like Company Of Heroes. Space Marines=Americans,Imperial Guard=British,Chaos Space Marines=Panzer Elite,Orcs=Wermacht,Eldar=French (because the french in WWII are good at stealth attacks and Guerrilla tactics and Tyranids are Just WIld animals.
Think about this, does it take balls to fight monsters weaing more armour than a tank with a gun that fires rockets? Perhaps. Does it take balls to fight monsters in a flak jacket with what is esentially a souped up flashlight? I personally think so. @MrBuda200 well if you think about it (sorry for butting in on this convo) but would you rather die a weak old man in a bed, or die in a mass battle with fellow commrades. I'd rather go with a fight then without one.
You know what suck ? The Space Marine's ending acheviement is "Sector Savior", while for IG it's "Acceptable losses" That's because the two ending are basically the same (Imperium's Servant, stopping Kyras, halting the Exterminatus) but because the IG suffered many losses, too many losses... You did the same thing, but with the death of thousands of Guardsmens from Cadia, and innocents living here... While the Space Marines are just heroes, IG are just soldiers. Victorious, but with a price.
The real ending is probably a mixture of both perspectives. No Chapter would ever have enough Marines to cover the entire subsector, especially the one torn apart by heresy and infighting. The Guard would have to fill in the gaps. It always does. P.S.: sry for necroposting
Their heaven is actually not too different from their hell. It's full of daemons and dying and dying horribly, but at least they got to do all the dying (and maybe the killing) alongside the Emperor. Maybe.

I don't entirely know about that. The Guardsmen in the Space Marine game were getting slaughtered by impossible odds, but they fought on anyway. There is something to be said for that.

I swear the commander knows what Merrick said.
He does. He didn't want to shoot Merrick.
He did lol but admitting it would have warranted a legit excuse to shoot Merrick, and the field marshal simply didn't want that.
