    The last range VLOG for 2017. I went to the range to zero in a brand new Vortex Optics Viper PST Gen 2 5-25x50mm FFP EBR-2C MRAD on the CZ 455 Varmint Tacticool, and naturally, it was windy.
    Have a Happy New Year.

    Note: I made a big deal about how my 25 yard and 50 yard zero were basically the same. After I got home and did some research, it appears this is fairly common with the trajectory of match 22LR ammo. That being said, I wonder why I used .5 MIL up from 25 yard zero to get to 50 yards with the Razor HD Gen II. Perhaps the bottom end 32 yard parallax setting at 25 yards had something to do with it.

      I skipped the YoDave for my Tacticool and just cut down a Fastenal spring. No creep, about 1.3#, plus original sear engagement. I did Stone the sear surfaces with an ultra fine ceramic stone to just polish and not remove material. Great trigger for under a dollar.

      Scope height might be a little different so where your zero for 25 might have also been your zero for 65 with the razor your viper was 25 and 50. All has to do with the arc of the bullet

      22lr at 1070fps sighted in for 50 yards will be .1" high at 25 yards; at that range, that's about 1/4 MOA.

    • @ashleynicely1046
      @ashleynicely1046 5 років тому +1

      Sighted in at 25 yards, you'll be 1/2 MOA low at 50.

    Addressing the same dope for 25 and 50yds, especially with rim fire. Projectiles are always dropping the moment they leave the barrel. Because of this we tilt the barrel up (to compensate for gravity), thus the projectile travels in an arc. So when you zero at 25yds the projectile is still on an upward assent when it reaches 25 yards. At some point the bullet will be on downswing of the arc and impact. In your case it was 50 yards; therefore, your DOPE for 25 and 50 yards are the same. It’s not uncommon. When you plug all of your data into a ballistic calculator with a 25 yd zero, set the increments to every 5 yards and note how much a .22 drops every few yards. I really enjoyed your video. I’ve got a similar setup: CZ 455, 20 MOA rail, Vortex Viper PST GEN2 5-25x50 FFP. It’s my favorite rifle to shoot. Happy shooting.

      Also shooting at an angle: degree of angle(cosine)x yardage = yardage to dial.

    Area 419 makes really nice stuff. I bought a Hellfire brake from them during their "black friday" sale. I didn't even pay attention they were making CZ455 products. Was set on another brand for my scope base until I saw this vlog. Thanks Jonathan. I really enjoy the vlogs.

    Another 455 mod I recommend: profile the firing pin to get off the edge of the rim. This is a downfall of the modular 455 setup that must accommodate 22wmr and 17hmr with the same firing pin. Many 455s will have occasional a “weak” initiation that sounds like a bad rimfire round. More likely with cheaper ammunition, but have seen it in a VPT with Midas+ even, so not immune.

    Thats a nice set up Bro, I admire your attention to detail on this Vortex scope and your explanation on how to go about setting up your scope. Does your rule of dialing down the MOA apply to the 22lr your shooting or can this apply for higher caliber rounds 308 to be exact. You just got yourself a new subscriber with those boss video. Hope you and yours are staying well and safe 🙌🏽💯🍻

    • @ocabj
      @ocabj  2 роки тому +1

      Not sure what you're asking about when you say dialing down MOA (this is an MIL scope). The only thing I can guess you're asking about is having buffer between the zero stop 0 so you can go a few tenths down from what your zero is at a the zero distance. In this case, yes, it applies to all cartridges. Most good scopes will already have three to five tenths of a MIL down from the 0 setting once the zero stop is set to account for variations in the conditions (e.g., altitude, temp).

    I have a Viper gen2 pst 3-15. You’ve got me thinking now about my zero stop. I really only shoot at home but i see what you’re saying if I were to go shoot a different elevation or something. I’m curious if the way you did it worked like you hoped? Seems like it would work to me.

    • @ocabj

      I haven't had to dial down, yet. But IMO, everyone should set their zerostop to allow for about a half-MIL slack on the bottom end.

    Was just down in Socal the last few days vacationing. Anyways, did you ever have a PST gen 1? if you did what do you think about it compared to the gen 2?

    • @ocabj
      @ocabj  6 років тому

      My first Vortex was actually a Viper PST 2.5-10X32 FFP EBR-1 MRAD, which is still on my 18" AR-15 SPR. It's a decent scope, but the zero stop mechanism on that scope leaves much to be desired. That's one of the big upgrades with a Gen 2. I never tried the 5-25x50 Gen 1, though.

    • @edcarolina87
      @edcarolina87 5 років тому

      @@ocabj The Vortex Viper PST Gen 1 had a 6-24x50mm power range. The 5-25x50 was an upgrade for the Gen 2. The shim system in the Gen 1 PST was kinda cheap imo. I still have the Viper PST gen 1 6-24x50, but I did just purchase a Gen 2 5-25x50 for my Tikka T3x Tac A1. The Gen 2 has better glass, excellent turrets, excellent zero stop now, and a better illumination knob placement. The Gen 1 PST is a great value scope especially now with their price down, but the Gen 2 really does give you a lot of features for the money. The glass is noticeably better in the Gen 2, and the turrets are much larger and feel better to me. That said, the Gen 1 was a solid scope, but Vortex really did a great job with the Gen 2 for the Viper PST and Razor. The Gen 2 Razor rivals my Nightforce ATACR.

    Vids are great man. However I am new to bolt guns and scopes and all, but my question is, why such a powerful scope on a 22LR?

    • @ocabj
      @ocabj  6 років тому

      By powerful you mean the magnification? Well, 25x is still a little 'low' in terms of benchrest target shooting for .22LR. Higher magnification is always better. But given I was going to use this for the .22LR Precision type matches, obviously, a wide magnification range is beneficial. With the size of targets used for NRL22 and other similar formats, higher magnifications is useful but the mid-range (14x to 16x, give or take) is where many folks shoot.
      Anyway, I figure a 5-25x is a good all purpose scope on a 22LR to make it usable for all types of shooting formats.

    now that is hilarious on that little kids toy, mean no disrespect an all but that is small youngsters plinking gun, all stupid jokes aside.. can that gun even utilize the full potential of that scope? many long range shooters use less powerful scopes for 1200+ yard target shots, like this vortex viper 5-20x50 with a high powered rifle/ammo - ua-cam.com/video/mF7YR77MaCc/v-deo.html

    • @ocabj
      @ocabj  6 років тому

      Yes, less magnification is often used at 1000 yards and beyond because of mirage issues. High mag scopes for short range benchrest (both centerfire and rimfire) have always been used because mirage is not an issue. One of the most popular scopes for 50 yard benchrest is the Weaver T36 which is a 36x40mm, and has a relatively low cost and good glass. Anyway, as far as 22LR, you're going to see a lot of scopes like 3-18x and 5-25x used in the NRL22 format and 22LR PRS-style club matches because of the size of the targets being shot at between distances from 25 through 300 yards.
      As far as 1000yards and beyond, I usually find myself at the 20x and under magnification in standard day conditions due to mirage. I still prefer to shoot iron sights for Long Range, though. But I have been out the NRA High Power game for a long time now (both Service and Match rifle). ua-cam.com/video/qSzLx5lboMM/v-deo.html
