Their other single 'Legion' is a must for experiencing Dan's full abilties, but I must say that this album as a whole, which I've heard on a loop for the past month with the rest of their discography, is kind of a culmination of all of their work, and it's glorious.

If by "stay away from metal music videos" you mean "fall into the waiting arms of Monuments", then yes... do that... Start with Monuments "Cardinal Red (Official Video)"... next: "Makeshift Harmony (Official Video)", then: ""False Providence (Official Video)"... after that, it's safe to assume you're hooked. Dealer's choice at that point.

I love Tesseract and Daniel is one of my favorite vocalists of all time. If you like his voice he has a ton of music to check out. He has a solo album and he’s in the bands White Moth Black Butterfly, Zeta, Skyharbor, Piano, he also did vocals for a Haji’s Kitchen album. He did vocals on an Earthside song called “A Dream In Static” that’s amazing and worth a reaction.

Hello! I really enjoy your reactions and your sense of humor is just amazing :) thanks for your videos! As some said down bellow, Legion is a very good one for his vocals. Also, I have been wondering for some time but ashamed do ask... have you ever heard Leprous? Einar, lead singer, has crazy wonderful vocals, very different for metal. I believe you would enjoy and I would love to hear your thoughts. If you consider reacting to them I would recommend live at the Rockfeller (I am a sucker for live music) Acquired Taste for his power or Rewind for clean and screams maybe... any from that concert really. Thanks again! Have an awsome rest of the week

Thank you for giving Tesseract some attention! Even though this band is known as one of the "original" djent bands, they don't seem to get a lot of engagement on social media. Plenty of metalhead UA-camrs know them, but it doesn't seem like they're talked about much. It's a shame, because I think Dan has to be one of the most impressive singers out there today and they have some really sick, groovy, chunky rhythms. They're like Meshuggah, if they make pretty music.
Opeth, Spiritbox, Tesseract...these are good choices. Now I want to get you into Periphery. Spencer Sotelo is just as impressive as Dan, honestly. Insane vocals in songs like Wax Wings or Wildfire.

You will love them live, their live production is usually first class. I love a long song, one of the most memorable live moments was hearing Periphery open with Reptile, this is a 16+ min story about reptilian alien invasion of the planet and how a Stoner saved it! As said Leprous should be on your list, Einar Solberg is unique, also add Periphery, Haken and Between the Buried and Me, all similar in style but different in execution to Tesseract. Oh, and for a bit of fun try Twelve Foot Ninja with One Hand Kiling - Bossa Nova Metal believe it or not (also used in Jinjer’s Home Back, add that to the list as well). Sorry Essay over………..

TesseracT have long been in my top three bands. In my estimation they've yet to release a bad song, and all their albums are fantastic journeys. You really can't go wrong with anything from their discography.
Dan's best vocal performance is probably Legion of this latest record, if you want to see how bass should be played then Amos has a play through of April, and Jay has a few play throughs on drums which are really fun to watch. He's such a fluid player.

to answer the question in the title: you do whatever drives your algo , and/or whatever else spins your wheels.
also, your assessment of what makes for appropriate drumming is spot-on.
edit: and now that i actually watched the video, it seems i misinterpreted the question 😂 my new answer is: we must keep the video format. [insert "muh art expression" argument here].
as to "what is metal?" .... that's evolved in to a very complicated question/answer ; whereas 30-40 years ago, it was all very simple. in my mind, the whole discussion changed when the artsy-fartsy types got deeply involved. all in all , the conversation really is more tedious and pretentious than it's worth 😂
so at this point, i say f' it -- if it has _some_ aesthetic that can be roughly described as metal-ish, then call it metal 🤷‍♂(which is why we then get the bottomless pit of infinite sub-genres, each new one more tedious and pretentious than the previous 😂)
........ and i say all that as someone who grew up on metal in the 80s.
    /2¢
also also , the featured comment has missed with the premise. it's not "am i allowed to like it?" ; it's just helpful sorting heuristics.

    Hello again,
So I am an OLD "Metalhead" (60, still have _all_ my long hair that is only slightly salt & peppered), I have to admit, I'm a bit of a snob about Metal, Prog Metal and Progressive Rock, but I've read/seen MUCH worse comments/opinions, but in saying all that . . .
I'm always looking for the NEW, and what fell through the cracks of the past. With the so-called "Djent" scene, I'm SUPER picky with those type of bands (I like a lot of bands that utilize that "sound", the palm-muted picking/chugging guitar riffs that are a bit more mechanical, than say palm-muting in Thrash & Death Metal, that is being used in bands like Haken, Voyager, Earthside, Caligula's Horse and the like). But I was all in on Tesseract's debut album "One" and became a life-long fan. But what I loved about them was their melodies in-between the aggressive, and their "Atmospheric" parts.
Though the comparison of Daniel with Jens (of Meshuggah, who I've been into since 95), I think Jens has gotten more deeper than higher since "Destroy Erase Improve" & "Chaosphere", so I'll have to checkout what you reacted to. Daniel has stopped doing those screams it seems when he came back to the band, so its cool to hear him doing them again with the guttural vocals. I wish "Jens" though would change-up his voice, I think it would perfect for their brand of Metal.
To see them live in a VERY unique setting, check out "Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig 2015 Documentary - TesseracT" and the songs they play there to hear Daniel's various vocal timbres, and to hear how awesome the musicians are live :).
    - Again, another great review, in my best Scottish accent I'd say "Greeeeeat!" 😊
*Extra note:* I'm with you on Metal drummers (in Prog Metal and Progressive Rock especially); Drummers that play a variety of cymbals (to the tiny splash cymbals, to the bigger China Crash, etc.), because it fills the spaces in the background and adds a different layer or dynamic. If you haven't already, give a listen to the "Mike Portnoy" era of Dream Theater (and NEW videos of him playing a smaller kit, as he _returns_ to the band), the "Mark Zonder" era of Fates Warning, and Opeth drummers; Martin Lopez (and his newer band Soen) and Martin Axenrot, just for a small example. All well mic'd and excellent composers of their parts.
ALL with excellent vocalists as well (as you already know with Mikael Akerfeldt :).

  • @auradmg
    @auradmg Місяць тому

FYI djent is pronounced 'gent' as in 'gentleman' rather than dee-gent and refers to the dj-dj-djent sound of chugging distorted guitars :)
Tesseract are absolutely pioneers of progressive metal music though, very distinctive in their more atmospheric and dynamic style. Slightly controversial but my favourite album of theirs is Altered State with singer Ashe O'Hara taking over vocals and lyric-writing while Dan took a break for other projects. Altered State still has plenty of complex prog but I find the songwriting much more 'accessible' and Ashe's style is considerably more of a pop-ish aesthetic with no harsh vocals.

If you are interested in adding a bit of international to your musical journey, could I suggest three young sisters from Monterrey Mexico called The Warning? They are bringing a new, and renewed, sound to hard rock. They area bit metal, some punk, a bit of indie and grunge, even some k-pop all rolled into a charismatic energetic group. Where to start? Metal is music for outsiders, by definition I would argue.

  • @Razzmata77
    @Razzmata77 4 місяці тому

I propose to drop down to just two scales of measurement (even though I have no illusions that there's any chance that these would ever be adopted).
The first is to answer the basic question: "is this metal?" - and the answer should be as inclusive as possible - does it have some of the elements of the metal drums, the metal guitars, or the metal vocals - then you can choose to call it metal. Celebrate the diversity, everyone is welcome.
The second is the answer to the purely subjective question: "is this *_fucking_* metal?". Completely different question! Do you feel it? Does it make you feel like you want to bang your head? Does it make you want to do weird scrunched facial expressions when you listen to it? Do your index and pinkie finger want to extend while your middle and ring finger stay curled, locked down firmly by your thumb, while your hand slowly floats higher and higher.....
    All other distinctions are irrelevant.
I'm here for Tesseract. To me, right now, this _is_ fucking metal. Can't really tell you why, but it is. Adding it to my library right now. It might change in the future. Fucking metal is not a permanent qualifier once given. Nor is it unobtainable after it's been denied. But it's very, very much real. It may be the most important distinction in metal, period.
To be clear, to me something is never bad because it's not metal. Maybe 10% of what I listen to is fucking metal. But of the other 90%, very very little of it, if any at all is metal. If I listen to metal, it'd better be fucking metal.
One last thing I want to bring up, to you specifically, Melisa. I do not completely disagree with your opinion on simple-but-impressive melodic vocals balanced with impressive distorted vocals - I mostly agree with that. What I would like to challenge is what is implied more than it is outspoken: that good music should always have some impressive vocals at all. And I'm not talking about instrumental music, I'm talking about music that has vocals, but where they vocals are just not that impressive. There're MORE than enough examples of fairly universally praised music (within and outside of metal) that are definitely interesting or even great, but are objectively lacking in some aspects. Great songs can sometimes have the most boring drums ever, or somewhat weak melodies, or whatever. Music sounds good to you because it has enough appealing aspects, not because it lacks all less appealing aspects. Impressive vocals are not something every great songs needs to have always. So, no, sometimes just decent melodic vocals + just decent distorted vocals can be plenty - as long as the rest of the music can make up for it.
I can imagine that for you as a vocalist, there is a ton of professional deformation that would make it hard for you to personally enjoy music with only adequate vocals. But for me almost two thirds (I checked) of my favourite artists have either no vocals at all, or just not very impressive vocals, and I don't love them any less for it. You have to acknowledge this.

Much like SpiritBox, I just find this band boring; and I, most certainly, don't consider them Progressive, because being Progressive - in my own estimation/experience - means using what's there in interesting/novel ways that most other people/bands haven't. Frank Zappa was Progressive; and I might consider Jinjer - given their acumen and what they do with it - Progressive; but TesseracT are far too contemporary to be Progressive. For me, they're a watered-down version of Slipknot (and I, already, thought Slipknot a watered-down version of Thrash). What I would see as an, obvious, precursor to this style would be Death.
Hailing from Florida, Death (from whom is thought the term Death Metal derives), were very interesting for their time; and while they began with a sound like many other of their contemporaries, they evolved into something much more interesting, and were one of the bands responsible for introducing a much more complicated instrumentation into the genre, especially, with their final album Sounds of Perseverance. Before them, King Diamond's original band, Mercyful Fate, were noted for the complexity of their sound, which most other bands, simply, didn't have.
All that said, again, like the music you do despite what anyone else says/thinks.
Finally, regarding my previous post, I can be very colourful with my descriptors; if I gave, any, offense, my sincerest apologies!
    Best! J

@@JasonSmith-lp6wg haha, you caught me on a bad night, sorry - I have fibromyalgia and was at the end of a bad day, it puts me on a short fuse!
I’m not keen on them myself but for a different reason to you, I’m more interested in Rock/Hard rock than Metal but do like Symphonic metal and Contemporary Metal, bands like Nightwish, Epica, Unleash the Archers, Spiritbox, Jinjer, and so on. No need to apologise, it’s just the state of mind I was in at the time. I can assure you that I’m well educated though 3 degrees (not the band 😆) in Engineering, Materials technology and Mechatronics plus my Masters in Mechatronics! Like I say sorry for being terse, it was just my state of mind after a day of serious pain.

@@DarrellW_UK I knew it! I knew you could do it; you just needed the proper prodding!
I'm glad you found my comment funny, because I, really, did intend it to be (somewhat, dickish, yes, but, mostly funny). Besides my better English degree, I possess a biting, sardonic wit that's hard to convey across this flat medium. Again, I'm glad you laughed.
As for the fibromyalgia, my friend, that's a tough one. About 10 years ago, I met a young who had FM (mid 30's. I was 43), at the cafe I still attend. He was a Doctoral, Philosophy student with whom I had a few great discussions; unfortunately, a few great conversation was all we were destined to have. It's a tough illness and I wish you my very best with it.
Like yourself, I, too, love Hard Rock; however, I'm thinking more Classic Hard Rock. That said, The Warning (3 sisters from New Mexico) are, quite, good, and have a sound, somewhat, similar to Girlschool or The Runaways, but without the Blues influence. If you know something specific, I'd love to hear it. Also, I love Symphonic Metal and know many of the bands to which you've listed. If you don't know AfterForever or ReVamp (both of which Floor was in), you should check them out. Also, BlackBriar are amzing Gothic Symphonic Metal from the Netherlands. It's like a fairy decided to be a headbanger!
      Thanks for writing back.
      All the best! J

@@JasonSmith-lp6wg yeah, I know those bands, I know most of Floor’s history and Blackbriar I know well too. The sarcasm thing is strong in me grasshopper I am an engineer you know 😜
I’ve got a couple of favourite Warning tracks, Queen of the murder scene and Disciple but I don’t dislike anything they’ve done.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan. I think that the song could be half the length and we wouldn't lose much. For me, the video carries it a lot. I did like the volcals though.

I’ve heard them before, not 100% about them. Parts of their songs are a bit monotonous, they don’t seem to have direction - too much time on guitar w4nk1ng!
I’m more of a hard rock fan myself, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Muse, Led Zeppelin etc. however there’s a band I do like that I’ve commented about in another of your videos - The Warning, old school rock with an up to date spin. They write all of their own songs, have been a band since 2014 when they were 9, 12 and 14! If you’re interested take a look on their UA-cam channel and there’s loads of good stuff to pick from, none of their performances would disappoint you!
