This is brilliant. Thank you for posting. I find that, unfortunately, a lot of guitar videos just don't cut the mustard - these songs were composed on keys and often it helps to see bass in one hand and chords/melody on the other to get a better understanding of what's actually going on. I appreciate you.
This is incredibly accurate! I have to play this song in like 10 minutes, and I went to find a tutorial, and this one hit the spot! I want to add that the C Minor nine over F makes it a F13
Thank you for turning me onto James Poyser. He wrote a lot of my favorite stuff by Badu!! and others. I love learning about these songwriters behind the upfront artist. thanks again.
I think the reason it seems confusing is that F isn't the root, and the repeated phrase is actually IV, V, I and variants of. It resolves to Cmaj7 with the additional dissonant minor third added. The fourth statement make it clear by omitting the dissonant note. By the bye, give a listen to the Flight original as it has some other nifty chords over that bass vamp as well. Plenty of ideas to steal here. ;)
Love those chords mate. I think that first chord is like an Fsus- playing Eb major over the F... but then that doesn't really make sense cos like you said its based on a minor 2-5-1. Sounds smoov either way though! Since watching your 'My Flame' tutorial I've been bumping loads of Bobbay Caldwell. Any chance of a tutorial on 'What you won't do for love' or 'Down for the first time'. Both are slick! keep up the good work mate!
Hey, Naekids, here's an possible answer to why the Dflat chord works. It functions as tritone substitution for a G. I think that's why it resolves to the C.
+Afi Scruggs Spot on. Love how the tritone sub gives that chromatic neo-soul vibe you hear in 70s fusion like "Think Twice." Roots keyboard player James Poyser co-wrote. Must be something in the water over in England because Brits like Poyser keep coming up with fantastic changes and grooves.
Thanks for the comment! It wasnt cheap. I paid around 1275 for the SV1-73 key, used off ebay and it came with some scratches on the front panel. That was the cheapest I could find it. try before you buy tho.
oh ive tried it, i loved it. saw it in sam ash...before i could save enough to get it, it was gone within a week haha. i know its up there but i feel like its worth it to be honet...and that sound outta there only verifies that i need it in my life haha
@sebaz111 For the first chord, you could call it is Ebmaj7 over F. it will give you the same notes as Cmin7 though, because Cmin is the relative minor of Eb maj. That makes more sense harmonically, that is, to call the first chord an Fsus. I think I had some reason for calling the first chord a C-7, but I forget what it was now hah.
Hey thanks for this it's awesome. I never listened to Erykah Badu but i feel really inspired the neo-soul scene now. And these tutorial is good for me to use. hehe
Yeah, yeah - it all sounded good to me, those chords are so hypnotic aren't they?! I think I lost most of Thursday last week just listening to this song on repeat :D
Just a note, I always call that first chord for the beginning chorus, " Back in the day..." A F Suspended chord. But I have to compliment you on your ear and smooth tutorial of this fun tune man. Nice. One of my favorite Erykah Badu hits. Do you do Meshelle Ndegayocello tunes too? I know I spelled her last name wrong. Hhahahaha. But you know the funky songwriter / bassist / music composer / performer I`m asking about. Funky Sista too.
Eb maj is harmonically the same as Cmin so i agree it could be. Although Im not sure if she plays a F7sus4 add9 in the song, I do think that is a cool harmonization if not. Thanks for the insights!
Ive got stevie wonders higher ground and alicia keys feelin u feelin me up next in the que, but Im certain ill get around to more erykah badu one of these days.
oh for sure i agree. Would you also call that a G+ or something else with the second chord? This progression trips me out, and I cant yet make sense of it!
Generally my tutorials are not for the beginner (but are intended for intermediate and advanced) but Ill try to make the videos more accessible in the future. Ill probably be doing some pop RnB in the future, and those should be pretty fundamental.
Yo FunkPianoAcademy.com the cm9 over F is there cause cm is generally thought of as a 2 which means the relative 5 is F (ii-V-I = cm7- F7- Bb) 2 and 5 are interchangeable and are considered (in most jazz post trad era) as one and the same. I knew i was trippin cause it sounded like a m9 in the chord but it felt maj at the same time looking at ur video its just a suspended chord.... gotta practice hearing those with inversions... also the thing she did with the maj then the alt she went from C# maj to C# minor over the rest of the chords (alt implies the chord scale C# melmin and since #9 may be considered as a way of saying its altered it works ovr that chord as well) you can look at the g+7 as 2 but really its the 5 of 5 (secondary dominate) the chord in between g and c is c# but hey its bending the rules a bit pulse the C# is like a beautiful chromatic or a weird maj to the min approach idk its a grey area but its hip thats why im stealing it lol... im not a piano player and i dont own one but i still wanted to learn this progression thank you for shedding some light on that for me you have some bomb ears piano players have an affinity to find out chord progressions and their voicings much fastr than sax players lol. you spoke about 2-5s so ik you know theory so yea man keep on learning but dont over think know what it is because we can speculate all day on how/why it works but at the end of the day its all THEORIES.
Thanks for watching! If you send me an email @ natedoggz@comcast.net detailing exactly what you'd like me to lay out for you, and in how much detail, I can give you a price quote. talk to you later :)
The best way to do this is to listen to the voice (or even to start improvising): you hear C Blues and Minor Pentatonic, Which means the chord progression is IVm - V7aug, then you have a turnaround to go back to IVm: bVI△ - V7#9 Cheers
oh yes then Id agree with you! yep I knew the Eb/F notation. The IVsus13 to a V7aug! Trippy! but I guess its not that weird. Never seen it before though! TY for the breakdown.
@sebaz111 As for "What you Wont Do For Love" Theres actually already a couple of people playing the song with overhead views, and I cant actually find "Down for the first time" on youtube lol...
@RPkeez The SV1 is TIGHT. Might be the sickest keyboard ive ever played. It beat a Nord (in my opinion), which I didnt think was possible. I think i almost shit myself first time I heard it. youtube quality dont do it justice.
no synth here - Im actually using one of the built in rhodes patches on the Korg SV-1. Native instruments and Lounge Lizard are 2 good E. Piano software VSTs.
I didnt know I was talking to someone with perfect pitch! Good to know (most) of what I transcribed was right then? Those chords are still trippin me out!!
Yup. This tune is a straight rip from "Face to Face" on Flight's Excursion Beyond album. It's really a shame there's no credit given seeing the extent of how derivative Eryka's version is. And as funky as the bass line is on this track (I love it by the way), the original bass player REALLY laid it down.
Well....Badu didn't write any of these changes. Vidas was the composer, and the hip changes we tailored by keyboard artist Jim Yeager and Bassist composer John Denicola, all from a band named "Flight". Thanks!
I’m mad late commenting on this but my ear is telling me the Cmaj9 has a flat 5. Listen real close bruh you’ll hear it. Otherwise, on point transcription!
Im not sure I understand what you mean by third and seventh harmonies... put it another way maybe? Theres a link to my soundcloud on my channel page, but theres not much good stuff on there, and i havent uploaded any of the work ive done since like a year ago.
hold on let me digest nnmmmhmnnnmhmmm Although soloing like the first chord is a IVm (f minor pent) works, the right hand chord that is played Bb - D - Eb - G is not at all the chord for IVm- and thats why im confused. It is almost like its an F sus (Ebmaj7 / F)! What do you think? I agree with the notation for the turnaround though!
Sorry actually I meant IVsus13... (It's also really common to name these sus chords as: Eb/F for instance. If you play F in the LH and a Eb triad in the RH it makes an Fsus) Tipically you wouldn't solo with the Fminor pent here, it would be Cminor pent on the IVsus chord which happens to be Fsus!
This is brilliant. Thank you for posting. I find that, unfortunately, a lot of guitar videos just don't cut the mustard - these songs were composed on keys and often it helps to see bass in one hand and chords/melody on the other to get a better understanding of what's actually going on. Your one funky whiteboy! Respect Bro!
Thank you for turning me onto James Poyser. He wrote a lot of my favorite stuff by Badu!!
and others. I love learning about these songwriters behind the upfront artist. thanks again.
you fucking nailed it, everyone else on youtube got the bass run wrong except you and you nailed the chords too
i honestly love you man!, its nice to see someone who can demonstrate great changes like this without asking £400 for a DVD course!
i hope you come back to bless us with tutorials wherever you are :(
I think the reason it seems confusing is that F isn't the root, and the repeated phrase is actually IV, V, I and variants of. It resolves to Cmaj7 with the additional dissonant minor third added. The fourth statement make it clear by omitting the dissonant note. By the bye, give a listen to the Flight original as it has some other nifty chords over that bass vamp as well. I wish you'd come back your tutorials are great.
My band is learning this right now thanks to this tutorial! Thank you! And also wonderful playing.
It always just seemed like magic to me, weird and cool to see you break it down. Thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this! I've struggled to make this sound right for years. You nailed it!
From my point of view, your tutorial is really exhaustive. You filled my day man! Thanks a lot :)
Love those chords mate. I think that first chord is like an Fsus- playing Eb major over the F... but then that doesn't really make sense cos like you said its based on a minor 2-5-1. Sounds smoov either way though!

Thanks for this tutorial for one of my favorite songs. I've subscribed.
Who ever gave this thumbs down is just jealous. Props to you Naekid, well done!
Definitely. If you have any insight on the theory behind the chord structure, Id love to hear it.
Hey, Naekids, here's an possible answer to why the Dflat chord works. It functions as tritone substitution for a G. I think that's why it resolves to the C.
Another good reason! Thanks for pointing that out Afi!
+Afi Scruggs - Absolutely ! ii - V - I tritone = bVI - V - I Very common in 70's funk/jazz-funk/R&B and beyond.
@JimmyJoeJollies and @KennethSmith Here's another to think of the first chord. It's a slash chord: Eb flat major/ F. (In effect, an F sus).
@@kennethsmith1453 so what key is this song in ?
Korg SV1 - My fav keyboard at the moment. Awesome stuff
Thanks for the comment! It wasnt cheap. I paid around 1275 for the SV1-73 key, used off ebay and it came with some scratches on the front panel. That was the cheapest I could find it. try before you buy tho.
Root is Cm, melody is telling us which key the song is, also guitar is sitting on Cm pentatonic. Anyhow, great job with voicing and lines!
oh ive tried it, i loved it. saw it in sam ash...before i could save enough to get it, it was gone within a week haha.
i know its up there but i feel like its worth it to be honet...and that sound outta there only verifies that i need it in my life haha

Thanks for making it a no brainer for me, and i also love that wah effect on it
Yeah, yeah - it all sounded good to me, those chords are so hypnotic aren't they?! I think I lost most of Thursday last week just listening to this song on repeat :D
I love it ! with the rhodes!
I think the Cmin9 chord over F in bass is functioning as an Fsus4 chord. Nice tutorial, thanks!
Incredible work !!
WOW! you really did the intro. thats amazing. it was on point too
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Just a note, I always call that first chord for the beginning chorus, " Back in the day..." A F Suspended chord. But I have to compliment you on your ear and smooth tutorial of this fun tune man. Gonna learn this thanks!
Glad you got something out of the tutorial! Yep its a rhodes patch :)
Eb maj is harmonically the same as Cmin so i agree it could be. Although Im not sure if she plays a F7sus4 add9 in the song, I do think that is a cool harmonization if not. Thanks for the insights!
Cm and Ebmaj - both will work for naming purposes! they are relative minor/major after all :)
Ive got stevie wonders higher ground and alicia keys feelin u feelin me up next in the que, but Im certain ill get around to more erykah badu one of these days.
Needed this tonight lol😂
oh for sure i agree. Would you also call that a G+ or something else with the second chord? This progression trips me out, and I cant yet make sense of it!
Yo - great stuff. On the fourth time round the phrase when you go to C, I reckon there's a sharp 11 (F#) in there - lydian kind of feel...
spot on 🙏🏼
oops, discovered a little thingy maybe: the bassline in the G augmented chord... shouldn't the b-flat be a b to fit in the chord?
Nice tutorial..... do you anything by Jeff Lober? Looking for chords for He Had A Hat!
Thank you so much! That was outstanding!
Thanks for the update Pat!!
Generally my tutorials are not for the beginner (but are intended for intermediate and advanced) but Ill try to make the videos more accessible in the future. Ill probably be doing some pop RnB in the future, and those should be pretty fundamental.
i learned something. nice video
cold for sure

Can you do a tutorial of Window Seat too thanks great work by the way🎹🎼👌🏽
Thanks for the input! Ive the heard the flight original but its hard to find :(

Tidy man. Nice work
You are amazing! Thank you.
Hey thank YOU for stoppin by parmis. Glad you liked the video!

Glad you dig!

This a great tool for anyone wa ting to learn.
Hello, Loved this tutorial, thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
What settings did you use to produce that sound on your SV 1 ?
So knowledgable.
hmmm, it must be a formatting thing youtube has changed... Ill look into it for future videos, thanks for the update!
I think that chord is a Ebmaj7/F its almost the same chord from the Cheers theme song
no problem glad you dig
no synth here - Im actually using one of the built in rhodes patches on the Korg SV-1. Native instruments and Lounge Lizard are 2 good E. Piano software VSTs.
MANNNNN!!!! i gotta step my key game up, how much did you pick up that SV1 for? im torn, i think i want that OR a rhodes Mark II
Great playing
yes SIR! this is awesome!
Thanks for the comment but it cant be a Gmin/F because there is an Eb. Its an Eb major 7 / F :)
Do something funny kitty! Haha Great tutorial vid
Not yet. Make a request!
Great tutorial song!! What key is this in?

Hey guys if I'm not mistaken, the chord over the 'F' is an Fsus13...

Did you do others tutorials of Erykah's songs ?
Thanks Nate.
Thank you :)
The only thing in its class is the Nord, but I like this actually BETTER than the nord, and this is more than 1000 bucks cheaper.
Damn bro! Lol You way too talented.
good work man.
hold on let me digest
nnmmmhmnnnmhmmm

I agree with the notation for the turnaround though!
NICE!
Haha We all gotta start somewhere!!! :)))))))
The grocery store doesnt accept video tutorials as payment, even though I wish it did!!
Glad you dug
Man where did you learn this style of playing?!
Joe Gil listening to records :/
+Naekid Piano Tutorials lol. you got skills!
Fuck yeah dude. Shit's so dope though.
11th voicing rocks!
ye mayn!
Sorry man, I get a lot of requests and Jeff Lorber just isnt popular enough on youtube to serve a wide enough audience. Thanks for tuning in though!!
Sorry actually I meant IVsus13... (It's also really common to name these sus chords as: Eb/F for instance. If you play F in the LH and a Eb triad in the RH it makes an Fsus)
