In this tutorial, I will show you how you can make your own flintlock from EVA Foam and some PVC plumbing parts.
To be technically correct, this is actually a representation of a cap lock pistol, which was the successor to the flintlock, having a percussion cap rather than using flint and steel. I refer to it as a flintlock in a general sense, as it is terminology people would use to refer to "an antique looking pistol"
This is a great accessory for a pirate costume, or any other period costume. Safe, quite durable, yet still looks fantastic!

I’m going to have to get all gun technical on you here. What you are making is a caplock, not a flintlock. And since caplocks were first invented in 1810 and not generally available until the 1830s, that would make these guns an anachronism in the 1700s. As in, not invented yet. A true flintlock system with the striker, frizzen, and pan, would be a more interesting and period correct piece to make.
Them: "Happy Thanksgiving!.... Wheres the turkey carver? "
Chris: "uh...."🤣
The verbs used it this video are beautiful 💚

"hi daddy" :D Your kid is so adorable.
Hi Daddy! Hi Daddy!! LOLOLOL. Freaking hilarious. SO cute. Your vids are legit amazing. Thanks for another awesome tutorial.

TBH that looks more like a percussion cap pistol, like the one John Wilkes Booth used, rather than a flintlock since the hammer is a different shape to hold a piece of flint, and the frizzen is nowhere to be seen.
Other than that, cool pistol, looks great.
It IS a percussion gun. Overall a great pattern, but not a flintlock.
Yay! A new vid from Chris... loving the gun and can’t wait for part two. Plus Chris has the most relaxing voice ever... if you’ve had a hard day then his vids are the perfect stress buster. Check out his other ones if this is your first time watching 😄.
This channel is so underrated, I love your videos so much.
Oh, if you don't want to use the toxic PVC then I'd recommend some sheet styrene. It's WAY easier to use!
I have a replica flintlock pistol and it's really cool but your video is good and you did a great job 👍
The time and effort that you put into shooting and editing your videos is AH-mazing! Thank you for always managing to bring a smile to my face, and the urge to MAKE cool STUFF to my heart. xox
Awww, such a nice comment:) you just brought a smile to MY face!
Really awesome but this is a caplock not a flintlock pistol
Not all of us are historians
@@lizrobinson6058 i know, I was just pointing out
There are more pirate tutorials by you??? That's amazing!
Edit: for gluing I recommend using baking powder to make the glue stick easier, thats what I tend to use
Can you explain how you use the baking powder? I am intrigued.
Lost Wax if you sprinkle a bit onto the part you want gluing but only a small amount, then put glue on the part you want to stick it to, and do it as normal from there then the bonds will be slightly stronger and bond quicker! If I don't sound to clear, you can probably find a tutorial on UA-cam.
Hmm, interesting, I'll have to try it sometime. Though it does sound a little bit messy- I can just see me with baking powder everywhere :)
Lost Wax yeah, pretty much what happened to me when I first tried it! :)
@@LostWax please make a flintlock army rifle to American revolution. I am russian, please for fails with my english
Shit, I don't have a basketball bowl, I guess I can't make the gun
So nobody's gonna talk about the fact that is not a "flintlock" pistol?
Great Job!!! Looks Great!!! Even made your arm and helmet!!
Sweet!
Your kids must have the coolest Halloween costumes ever.
Do you have any tips with what to do without a rotary tool?? Thank you!!!!
I haven't figured that out yet. I am going to try though, because it would be great to be able to get the foam smooth without needing to spend on a rotary tool. I tried rubbing it really fast......not fast enough.
Thank you so much!!!!
If you use a heat gun it will help to smooth out the foam
I have a cheap Habor Freight rotary tool. Mine plugs into a wall and does not have speed control but it was about $10. I have not done this project but think I might in a few days.
Dana Guzzi use a couple coats of Plastidip. ( spray can )
Awesome!!! But that´s percusion cap gun, not flintlock.
Yeah, I know, I just thought it would be easier for people trying to find it. I do mention it in the video description.
Lost Wax True, I didn't saw it, my bad :)
I don't think I've ever seen someone use an electric carving knife on EVA foam.
Cool build! Have you thought about making a blunderbuss?
Those are NOT flintlock. Those are based on a PERCUSSION CAP pistol. These would be more appropriate for a civil war costume, not a pirate.🙄 It’s a cool prop, and it looks good, but you’re calling it the complete wrong thing.
Hi and sorry, that isn't a flintlock pistol. It is a caplock pistol which is a later technology. Flint was for the revolution, percussion caps were civil war tech. Many flintlocks were converted to caplock as an update. Percussion caps Were early precursors to the modern primer caps on modern cartridge amunition seen in the center of the bottom of the bullet. Back then they had to manually load a firing cap after loading powder and ball. Percussion caps were more reliable than flints (no more flash-in-the-pan failures where the pan powder flashed but did not ignite the main charge to make the gun fire). Also performed better in rain. Also, these guns never had rivets - all screws. I own working examples of each technology. Hope this helps for historical accuracy's sake. cheers! bv
That’s not a flintlock. It’s a percussion/cap lock pistol . Definitely NOT a flintlock.
Hi Daddy! :D
You are an amazing artist, please keep doing videos about steampunk, I m going to be waiting for more.....
Small trick to make it easier, you sand down the textured side before you do your cutting. The larger area and able to hold means you can use a power sander easier on it.
You skills are very very very nice
Can you try to create the black panther mask?
That would be a cap lock not a flintlock and would not have been used by pirates
I can’t look at a flint lock the same since I watched Hamilton
YES!! Freaking sweet! :)))
Awesome work and your daughter is adorable.
Im watching this for your humour XD
I see conflicting info on laser cutting Eva foam. Do you have an opinion?
i'm a do this with wood :D
Hi. I was wondering if you've ever made Jack Sparrows compass? I took apart a broken sander and a couple of the pieces looked like a good start to making the iconic compass. Could you help me?please!! Your so talented. I made this gun thanks to your plans, the kids really enjoy them.
Hmmm, I don't have plans for that, if I revisit the pirate costume, I'll probably do the eye patch and the baldric.
as im sure has been stated, thats a caplock, not a flint lock, but not that hard to convert it to look like a flint lockanyways XD side note, you sound a ton like nativlang XD
Yeah, I just wanted to give it a name most people would kinda understand.
I need to make a flintlock pistol for an upcoming musketeer cosplay, and let me tell you your video SAVED me! You explain so accurately and simply, and the visuals help a ton, too. Thank you so much ❤
dude stealing from a baby the plastic tray its the same as stealing him
Ok did no one know that this is a cap lock pistol not flintlock?
I hope you realize that’s a representation of a caplock, not a flintlock...
Yep, I think I mention that in the description.
Can someone please Write the Name of all the Things?🥺
お洒落なオチがついてるね。センスがいいですね。材料がポリ塩化ビニルかー。なるほどね。
Looks like your printer is running low on ink I've moved so I can't find them to her that I bought to cover the one top hat that I made and that Top Hat didn't survive well going to be using epoxy instead of hot glue apparently a hot glue gun and hot glue you buy from Dollarama in Canada is not good LOL XD but I can make good candles out of it LOL
0:37 "Wow," 0:40 "Wow," both wows sound the same 😂😂😂
Where were you when I was a kid haha
Which paint did you use?
Can't wait to use these for a Hamilton cosplay for me and my best friend
Nice.
I tried this and it came out perfect. Thanks for the vid.
This is a dumb question but would 12mm foam work if I don't have 13mm?
Yep:)
hope biden dont band your gun
Man you should be a Hollywood prop maker. The carving, assembly and painting require a fairly high level of skill. Oh my mistake., those are all CGI pistols now.
Best part is "hi daddy"....she real star. She needs a longer roll in clip. Now buy her stuff bear and new food tray. Lol
Good job... Florida Tampa Gasparilla here I come
Technically those aren’t flintlock. Those are percussion pistols
True.
It has to be a basketball bowl or it won't turn out right lol
That is not flintlock... it is caplock
This made me giggle. My boyfriend made me a couple of these but with wood and brass. Surprisingly it uses pretty much the same method. :)
It is a wonderful! I think you can make not only cosplay flintlock, but a AK-47 from FVA foam
Your electric carving knife reminds me of Rocky Horror Picture Show
That's not a flintlock..
thats a caplock, not a flint lock
You can flatten pvc pipe by splitting the pipe down both sides lengthwise and heating it with a heat gun then flattening it between boards. It'll save youfrom buying endcaps all the time and you can make it any length you want essentially. Be sure to take all appropriate safety measures and keep in mind usinf rotary tools on pvc creates a hella dust storm.
That is a Caplock
'Pirate gun' really.....
This isn't a flintlock. It's a percussion cap pistol. Flintlocks use flint and a frizen to ignite the powder in the dish to go through the hole into the barrel. The percussion cap firearms use a percussion cap, when the hammer hits the cap it acts like a cap gun, and shoots a bit of an explosion into the barrel.
Yep, that's true, I just thought it would be easier for people to find who are just looking for "one of those old pistols"
@@LostWax ah i see
Plz make wagh nakh weapon
Smoothinating 😂 Whoever gave this video needs to be smoothinated.
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing 😊
I totally used this pattern to make one of these, but i made the handle out of wood cuz i had a small hunk of maple laying around. :D
What if you don't sand the foam so it keeps a rigid wood texture
Totally, that would work!
Plz send the template
Congratulations and thanks for your creativity ...
Make a cowboy gun
If you don't already, you should open an Etsy to sell your completed wares.
I think the same basic concept could be adopted to make other firearms. Thanks for the video.
Make a foam sword
Your crafts are so cool!
Oh the tray ..lol
How riveting
Would adding a metal wire down the centre of the pistol add strength?
Have you ever tried Wood Filler or QuickWood putty? It's like Scupley clay but air dries to wood in 30 minutes.
No I haven't. Does it stay flexible once it dries? I am always looking for something that is sandable, yet stays a bit flexible. I would be a happy man to find that.
Lost Wax, yes it is sandable but very sturdy when it dries. It molds very easily like clay and air dries quickly to be hard. It is epoxy type clay material.
So, I am guessing it would be prone to cracking if flexed when dry?
hello, i'm brazilian and your videos are very awesome!
*title says flintlock* *shows caplock* me: 🤨
Yep, I know. I just wanted it to be easier for those looking for a "piratety looking gun thingy" Not many average people know the term caplock.
Always get excited when I see a notification for a LostWax tutorial, These pieces look so WOW and even though I have no need of them, I soooo want to make them. Can't wait for the painting tutorial coming up ;)
errr well actually that looks more like a caplock 🤓
Yep, it actually is, just most people don't know that when they are searching for how to make a pirate gun
Awesome
Wow
wtf
Your videos always make me laugh, good work man!
great Sunday morning viewing, thanks Chris
Просто агонь пистолет
Not a flint lock its a caplock but it cool eny way
True, I just thought it would be easier for people looking for it if I called it a flintlock.
Thanks Chris. I purchased the Ultimate Everything bundle a couple of years ago to make some steam punk shoulder armor( which came out great). Now I am off to a pirate themed renaissance fair and wanted to make this pistol. No problem logging back in and printing off the pattern. And thanks for the continued updates to this purchase. Makes making stuff fun when somebody else has figured out all the hard parts.
Thanks so much for sticking around! Glad you are getting value out of the bundle, I'm a bit slow adding new patterns sometimes, but still trying:)
Cosplay competition Sunday
Omg your daughter it's so grown and so beautiful, and it's already telling u daddy, my god how much time it's been OoO
Great project by the way, I needed some kind of steampunk gun, this gives me some ideas, thanks Chris, awesome as always
I know, they grow up so fast:)
Percussion cap pistols wasn’t something a pirate would use, they mainly used flintlocks
True.
After several times of watching i noticed it´s actually not a flint lock but a percussion pistol. Not less cool though.^^
Very true! I just thought for most people it would be easier to understand if I just called it a flintlock:)
It's a delight to watch your videos!
Boy a new video from chris! Today is a good day😄
