This is one of my favourite lenses. It takes fantastic shots; definitely use it for portraits. I take wildflower photos and have had great success. Thanks for this great video.
There’s nothing quite like maneuvering around a macro subject using an Olympus camera with this specific lens. I feel energized using the Olympus vs. say... my D850 with a 105 that absolutely zaps my strength after a short while. With the Olympus camera and this wonderful little lens I can shoot for a much longer period w/o fatigue. I’m very happy with this lens and it’s size and quality are perfect for me. I have been very very pleasantly surprised by results every time I use it. Thanks for posting, Peter!
Hi Peter, this works perfect also at -10° Celsius, without any Problem ... OMD, Weather, Polar Circle ... so what? But ... if you are a Filmmaker, the 2.8 gives you a ton of more Options to create any Macro Video ... great. In my Case ... this Equipment (EM 1 MK3 / 60mm 2.8, gives me a smile all the time ... all the time i use it. You don`t smile so much as i do ... by the way.
I have had the Zuiko 50mm f2 macro lens for years and use it when I need a macro lens. While it probably doesn’t focus as fast it still produces outstanding images. But I must use an adaptor as well as a tube to get 1:1. I do love macro work and enjoy the many possibilities. Thanks for the video Peter, and “bye for now”.
This lens has been great. Bought it for 300 bucks last year. I also have the 30mm. I use the 60 for lizards, tree frogs, and snakes I frequently see and can get close up on. I intend to use it more in warmer months for educational purposes (showing people what snakes are what and how to deal with seeing them without hurting them/getting hurt).
Thanks Peter. Another great video. I regularly use this 60 mm lens to monitor bumblebees in my state (Maine, USA) and also to document moths showing up on my house lights during summer. This lens has been invaluable in monitoring these insects. I either identify the images to species myself or send them off to specialists. Thanks for all your Olympus tips and reviews.
Have you ever thought of uploading them to iNaturalist? I'm in Ontario, and as far as moths go, our province is an ID powerhouse, the AI IDs for species are pretty amazing. As far as bumblebees goes, John Ascher is an expert for this group, and he regularly reviews iNat and provides IDs on this group
I started with the Panasonic 25mm f1.8 and a set of extension tubes. Works pretty well and image quality is very good. Just can not use image stacking, and working distance is a bit closer. Thanks to you, I'm now strongly considering adding the 60mm to my kit. :)
Thanks for the great video as usual Peter. My favourite macro lens is the fabulous OM Zuiko 50mm f3.5. A couple of weeks after purchasing this lens I had (for the 1st time ever) a photo published in a national newspaper. If you check out MyOlympus you can find me/it there. I like the OM Zuiko 35-70mm f3.3-4.5 also which at 231g is a very portable zoom that has a close focus facility.
Just loving this lens. First trip in to the garden with auto focus and hand held. Flipped the lever to 1:1 and got a superb picture of a fly first try. I locked the focus half button press and then moved the camera to focus and it seemed easy to use. Razor sharp images also. Reminds me of the 12-50mm which had a sort of macro but this 60mm is something extra special I think.
I shot with the Oly 60mm yesterday. Looking at the photos on the LED screen, I wasn’t sure if I’d nailed the focus, but when I processed them on my iPad the clarity was pretty good. Thanks once again for a wonderful and informative video!
I bought this lens when it was on sale for the bargain price of £270, and absolutely love it. Most of my shots have been indoors and needed a good light setup, but that's because my EM10 MK2 isn't weather sealed and the rain has been constant over here. Huge amount of fun though!
The best thing about this lens from my point of view, is its lens hood. No screws, no knobs, simply bayonet on and pull it back however much you desire. Streamline and lightweight. Wish most future Olympus lenses past the 25mm (50mm FF equivalent) focal length can come with lens hoods of similar configuration. Or just simply make after-market variations for existing lenses. Consumers are already paying extra for Olympus lens hoods (which is a lame for itself), why not make the functionality more worth of the price tag? And Olympus, if you are listening, give your future macro lenses a MF clutch. It's the only element that still makes me hesitate of going to 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO for macro work with MF at times.
Thanks for talking about this lens, the 60mm is my favourite right now. I have used it a lot for the past 9 months. The quality is superb. I use it for macro and close-up. For serious macro it is the best option for m43. Before I had this lens I used my Oly 45mm f1.8 with the Olympus MCON-P02 macro adapter. I recommend this solution for those who own a 45mm but are not sure about macro because it is a reasonable price. That image quality is excellent too. I extension tubes too but I prefer the macro adapter, it is easier to use and there the quality is retained.
@@ForsgardPeter Yes, at the time I bought the macro adapter I was wondering whether I'd like macro and so I didn't feel like spending 500 on the 60mm. Also I used my 45mm more, which was nice as I really like that lens. Thanks again for the videos, keep them coming, they are always interesting.
I would like to hear what you say about the Olympus macro adapters as I now have both the 1 and 2 as well as the 60mm macro lens. Also the 45mm. How do the extension tubes work in comparison with the Olympus macro adapters?
@@yvesbrissette9831 The 25mm is listed on the Olympus website for the MCON-P02 so it will work. But will it work *well*? I don't know as I don't have the Oly 25 lens. Generally it is better to have a longer focal length for macro. With the 25mm lens you might have to get very close to the subject. I hope that helps.
Peter, thanks again for another video about Olympus gear. The 60mm F2.8 Macro was one of the first lenses I acquired after moving to micro four thirds. I used it mostly for shooting flowers hand-held. Although this is an excellent lens, I didn't like the finicky focusing-range switch and it wasn't a real match for my needs. I sold it, and now use the Olympus 50mm F2.0 four thirds with an adapter. This piece of excellent glass works for macro/closeups and portraits. It works best on my E-M1 Mark II, but not as well on my PEN-F.
thank you Peter for your interesting video, I like my 60/ 2.8 and it is probably now the oldest lens I own from Olympus. I use it for macro ( focus stacking ) and recently also for portraits when I am too lazy to change lenses.

Good review, Peter. I do think this lens is sharper than you suggest, though I will admit to almost always using it at f5.6 or f8. It is light and able to capture moving insects and blowing flowers very well. I rarely use focus rails, but of course it works with those as well. This is one of my first M4/3 lenses (used with an E-P2) and it remains one of the most frequently used of my collection. I will agree it isn’t a travel lens though... the 12-100 IS lens focuses close enough to satisfy macro needs on the road. Thanks.
I only have a Tamron 90mm f2.8 to use on my Canon M system, but I'm starting to use MFT (Olympus and Panasonic) as an experiment, and I'm enjoy using my EP-1 with the 45mm f1.8.
Thanks for your videos and especially the 60mm review. I completely agree on macro and portrait usage of this lens. Main pain as for many olympus premium lenses no lens hood is coming along with 😭. Olympus charges crazy 50€ for it. I bought it half year ago and meanwhile my favorite lens apart from 12-40 is the 60mm. I'm always finding something tiny in nature looking great when using a macro.
Peter, have you tried using the 60mm Macro lens with the MC-14 teleconverter? I just obtained a set of Pixco extension tubes. The 10mm tube fits over the MC-14. The 16mm tube does not, and neither do my Neewer extension tubes. However, once you have the 10mm Pixco tube attached to the front of the MC-14, you can attach another extension tube...and then the 60mm Macro lens. Just so you know, the 10mm tube by itself does not clear the MC-14 enough to allow attachment of the 60mm Macro lens. You need at least 20mm of extension to attach the Macro 60mm to the MC-14. So, to be clear. Camera, then MC-14, then Pixco 10mm ext. tube, then one additional extension tube or more, then the 60mm Macro lens. I've also attached a Raynox 250 closeup lens to the 60mm Macro lens...and now we have super macro photography!!! Instead of 1:1...I get 3:1 or 4:1, maybe even 5:1.
I have not used the 60mm with the MC-14. The MC-14 does not fit in myy extension tubes. But I have heard that with some tubes it is possible. Thanks for sharing your set up! Sounds great.
@@ForsgardPeter Okay...I took my setup out in the field yesterday to attempt focus stacking a snowdrop flower up close. It didn't "seem" to work. I used 15 images, but a focus differential of 1. F stop was 4. All the pictures looked about the same...the only difference caused by a slight breeze. Very slight, but at that magnification, it doesn't take much at all. So, I tried my setup indoors. Camera, then MC-14, then 26mm of Pixco ext. tubes, then 60mm Oly macro lens with f stop at 4. Focus stacking 15 shots and it's hard to tell that the lens moved at all. Changed the focus differential to 3. Still, precious little difference. Changed the focus differential to 10 and now I can finally see movement. Depth of field...about 2 mm!!! The lens was set to focus at 1:1, so at the highest magnifications, the depth of field is very, very shallow. Obviously, I will have to set that F stop higher to improve that depth of field. At f/5.6, depth of field is maybe 3mm. At f/8, it's about 4.5mm. At f/11, it's 6mm. At f/16 its maybe 7.5mm. And remember, that's with a focus differential of 10. Pretty thin. But it does work. Great news...I have an MC-20 coming in the mail. I'm wondering if it will fit my extension tubes. No worries, the main reason I'm getting it is to extend my 40-150mm pro lens for telephoto shots.
I am a macro lens fanboy, including the M Zuiko 60mm! Travel is excellent as this lens is relatively compact & lightweight, especially on my Pen-f. With focus bracketing and range control, this combo is better than many of my old dslr & film macro kits. I use the OEM hood and it is excellent for normal telephoto work. The Olympus macro technology & lenses have long been excellent compared to some other makers’ versions...imo. :-)
This is a stellar lens! Its telephoto characteristic is especially useful for photographing insects, because it is difficult to approach them too closely. I have even been able to capture the mites on the legs of a bee. The only problem I have with this lens is the focus limiting button, which is difficult to operate, because it is too flat. Other than that, nothing than praise for this lens. The lens hood is unfortunately not included, but it is well designed, and makes for easy storage and quick deployment, so it is definitely recommended.
Hi Peter, the Olympus 60mm Makro lens is one of the top lenses in my portfolio! I often have it with me while walking around because it's really thin and it fits in nearly every foto bag additionaly to the other choises. The 7-14 mm Olympus wide angel zoom plus a nifty fifty and the light tele/Makro (the Olympus 60 mm), a very often used combination of my lenses... P.S. I really would appreciate, if you would make more vids like the one "lost spaces...with comments on the pics of your followers"
I would say all true macro lenses are outstanding, optically, speaking. They're just not compact and are slow for their size. I had a Tokina 90/2.5 for my NIkon FM2N that I just loved. (though it was too sharp for portraits, in the film days) I just bought the 30 mm f/3.5 macro. What a great value! My intent was digitizing negatives with the Nikon ES-2 "Digitizer Set", but I may use it for other things too. f/3.5 is not fast, but it's not f/5.6 either...
I recently got 16mm extension tubes for my 40-150mm f4-5.6 R. Not sure if it's true 1:1, but it's been a good cheap option for doing macro/close-up. Maybe I'll upgrade to the 60mm soon.
I was taught (in the 70s) that the correct term is photomacrography for up to 1:1 and microphotography for closer than 1:1. Is the term a matter of taste, location, or did my source get it wrong?
Reason I would buy the 60mm over the 30mm is the working distance from the subject for 1:1 but I never had a need for that close of magnification. However I've been tempt to buy it because it goes on sale for $350 sometimes. I use the 40-150mm with a 16mm extension tube. Stacking two extension tubes sometimes gives an undesirable reflection of the tube walls into the sensor and the one 16mm tube is good enough for me.
@@ForsgardPeter here is a link, the first three images are from my 40-150mm f/4-5.6 with 16mm extension tube. Rarely ever use it. For most flower photography, I only need a minimum focus distance between 20-30cm and both 14-42mm R and 12-40mm do a fine job. adobe.ly/2OmYTLu Rob Trek gave me the idea to get the extension tubes but also with the 3rd image and the black and white image of a flower. Underexpose by 3 stops and use manual flash to black out the background. The picture of the hot wheels cars was my first time trying live composite. The bird photos is where I used a tripod with live view remote control from inside my friend's house so not interrupt the mother from feeding her babes on the porch. I'm a jack of all trades but a master of none but I do seem to lean more towards event and candid photography.
Great video. I have a 60mm macro. Got it to photograph may coin collection, my father's stamp collection and my wife's jewelry. Didn't realize its full capability as a lens to photograph nature. I need to start using it..
@@ForsgardPeter I know Jewelry is difficult to photograph. I actually use NIKON DSLRs to photograph it. I use the NIKONs because I can control it from a computer using NIKON software and I have 3 NIKON speedlights which can be synced. I can mount the camera on a tripod for stability. I like to use a primary lens particularly the 85mm f1.8, but will use the Tamron 18-250 mm for convenience. I have found aperture priority to be best at f8, f11, and f16 settings. I have an external plug in power supply for the camera so I don't need to worry about low batteries. For non flash jewelry photography I use daylight balanced LEDs and CFLs as my light sources. The room light sources are also daylight balanced and the camera set on daylight white balance. The room has light gray, almost white walls. The OLYs are my field and travel cameras, My wife does most of the jewelry photography using her cell phone and a photo tent with LED desk lamps. I've been trying to persuade her to try the OM-D with wifi to transfer her photos directly to her computer. She would find easier than her cell phone and get much better photos.
In fact, there is at least one option weatherproof macro lens: ZD 50/2 + MMF3. The EC14 and EC 20 teleconverters and macro rings can be used to increase the focal length and magnification. I myself use this set, bought for ridiculous money on the secondary market in a state close to new.
@@ForsgardPeter Yes, my copy gives a very detailed picture. If used with the EC14, the image quality to my taste does not suffer, complete with the EC20 the Central area is also sharp, but it makes sense to stop down the aperture to 5,6-8 to sharpen the edges of the image. The quality of the 50/2 optics is sufficient even for use with the EC14 in highres mode. And this set cost me about 140 euros for 50/2, 112 euros for EC14, 140 euros for EC20 and 115 euros for MMF3. The EC14 and EC20 were purchased primarily for use with the ZD 50-200/2.8-3.5 SWD, but they are suitable with ZD 50/2.
I like it fine, but an update is definitely in order. The fidgety focus limit switch is annoying. Olympus - how about a 100mm f/2 pro? A bit shorter focus throw would be nice too.
I would like 100mm focal length, but why f/2? Its depth of field is too shallow for macro photography anyway, so it is better to have f/2.8 or f/4.0 to keep costs, weight, and size down.
Hiya Peter, thanks for another very informative video. I have recently purchased the 60mm macro lens primarily to shoot micro fungi which are often around 1mm in size. Would you recommend a Raynox DCR 250 or a set of extension tubes? I already use a good tripod with a macro slide s well.

Video idea: review this lens with the new 2.0x teleconverter. Compare it to the 300mm F4 also with the 2.0x teleconverter. Can you handhold shoot with it, or does it require a tripod? Can you focus stack with the teleconverter, again with or without a tripod?
MC-20 is not compatable with the 60mm f2.8 macro. I would love to test the MC-20 with the 300m f4, but I do not have the MC-20 right now. I believe bracketing is possible, but I need to test if stacking is also possible.
I too was very disappointed that the 60 did not include a lens hood. I think hoods are absolutely necessary and should be part of the lens packeage, but the manufacturers seem to think of them as a way to add some profit to their lens business. Olympus does sell one for this lens, but it costs $50, which is highway robbery. The good news is that you can buy a generic 46mm telephoto hood, which works just fine, for about six dollars.
This is an excellent lens. I have used this on a macro rail for focusing stacking. I have used it in combination with Raynox lenses for magnifications > 1:1. Vibrations are quite low with my PenF and 60mm combo. I still need to better understand the in camera focus bracketing. It would be great to have better info on the step sizes (1 to 10)
The focus bracketing focus step that you need can very greatly from lens to lens. I don't use my 60mm macro for focus bracketing or stacking because of focus breathing. To determine the focus step, I test each lens at each focus step and then look at the results to determine the best setting. From my tests, my Panasonic 30mm Macro needs a step of 5, the Leica 8-18 needs a step of 2, and the Oly 8mm fisheye needs a step of 1.
I love this super sharp lens with its nice working distance for single shots. However, its focus breathing is very extreme near 1:1. This makes it far from ideal for focus stacking. Same with the Leica 45mm macro. The Panasonic 30mm Macro is also ultra sharp without the focus breathing issues. Hopefully Olympus can come out with a version 2 of the lens that resolves the focus breathing issue.
I like using my Fuji X20 advanced compact for macro. It has two dedicated macro modes and a much smaller sensor that gives greater depth in focus than cameras with larger sensors. While I do have extension tubes that work well with my 14-140 M4/3 lens, especially with focus stacking, its just not as convenient as using the little Fuji. This is just my preference and not everyone has the choice of equipment for different uses that I have.
Great video! I’m a Sony shooter. I’m interested in switching to Olympus for macro only. I am renting the OM - 1 now but I’m wondering can I get a cheaper Olympus camera and still get the same results?
It depends what you mean by same results. OM-1 has the newest sensor and has slightly better image quality that the models. How important that is depends. I know som who does macro with OM-5 and are totally happy.

If you have the budget 600mm F2.8 macro is a better option. On the hand 12-45mm plus extension tubes works well too. Not sure if Focus stacking will work, mots likely not.

This lens shows a close up ratio of 1:4 > 1:1 max. Did you ever use it (succesfully ;-) with a extension tube, or the Raynox DCR, or another closeup lens to get a higher ratio ? (And if, than whát ratio)
I using EM-5 mkII with this lens which I've owned for a year but have found so little info on how to use it well, specifically the focus limiting switch, getting the whole bug in focus (depth of field) in time before they move, focusing fast before the bug moves, etc. This is what I thought was the benefit of buying a specialty macro lens. I've found your videos informative and helpful but unfortunately not this time. Most of the time was devoted to general info on the lens, mildly interesting but not the reason I bought this lens. How to take photos using the focus limiting switch with examples and how to use that frustrating spring-loaded last part 1:1 were you have to fight with turning the switch against the spring while trying to focus. I understand the suggestion of using the rail (don't have one) not sure it would be worth the extra cost when what I want to shoot (insects etc) don't sit and pose quietly while I set up the tripod, rail, camera and adjust the lens. Which brings me to the other part of this video I wish you had addressed. Extension tubes, how does that compare to the macro lens? Show us pictures shot with both methods would have been very helpful. Which of the two pieces of equipment, 60mm lens or extension tubes would have an advantage (easier and quicker) in different shooting situations, still life or outdoors with a moving target - insects, etc. I appreciate the efforts you put into your videos and I want to thank you for them. I've just been frustrated with this macro 60mm lens and how to use it, actually in practice use it and use it well.
This is my only 1:1 macro, I have used it for more than two years now. I do not like the the way the focusing limiter was implemented, with the little spring mechanism and cannot be kept at 1:1. Other than that I simply love this lens...
I have this lens and I love shooting close-up, macro and portraits with it. Unfortunately, I have a body that is too old to have focus bracketing. Which do you think is more efficient: a focus rail to manually focus and stack or focus bracketing in camera?
Stacking is a worth to try. You just need to experiment what focusing difference between shots is the best for each situation. It is a bit hard to figure out how much one step is when adjusting the focusing difference. If you are able to manage focus bracketing with a focusing rail, then go for it. I personally use the focus bracketing/stacking in camera.

Now ,having two OM D cameras,the EM10 mark2 and the EM10 mark3,I bought a zuiko 50mm 3.5 macro for a few bucks.This lens works perfect with the Om micro4/3adapter on these cameras. I always used a Raynox adapter on my Panasonic 100-300mm which gives me nice 3:1. I recently tried 300mm plus a reversed 12 mm, which gives completely insane results. I could see the structue of the hairs on my arm... Probably something like 25:1 and not macro anymore but micro photography :P
@@ForsgardPeter I use the Raynox DCR-250, which generally makes the depth of field really tiny, but the results are sharp enough especially when you consider that you can turn any lens into a macro lens. But a tele lens is required since you will get strong vignetteting otherwise (The Raynox 150 is better for non-tele). For the "microscope" I just put my camera with the tele lens (100-300mm mk1) on the table and tried to place my 12 mm f2 Samyang in front of it so that it's lined up. Since there wasn't that much light coming through the contraption anymore (I had to use a small aperture on both lenses becauseof the depth of field), I used a strong flashlight to be able to focus and take a picture. But the lenses probably weren't 100% aligned, so it wasn't too sharp. But still really impressive! Now I ordered a "reverse macro coupler" for less than 10€ which basically makes it possible to screw the lenses together on their filter threads. The results should be better...

But one thing for sure Having to pay €50 for a lenshood is. bollocks😝 Even the cheapest Lumix Kit Lens comes with a FREE lenshood. Love and respect the Olympus brand... I shall be trying focus stacking using the M5 mk 2 with the 60mm macro lens. Can you explain whether the focus is shifted out or in (or both) when the 8 images are taken? Should I initially focus on the mid point of the subject, the furthest part or the nearest part of the image? Thanks. Peter.
Focus on the nearest point. The first image will be taken with that focusing distance and the second one with a bit closer and the rest longer than the first focus point.

I recently purchased this lens, along with the Olympus hood. It is fun! Contemplating the STF-8. Is it possible to use the STF-8 in conjunction with the hood?
I use the 60 mm macro and it is capable of some great images, however the 19 cm working distance is measured from the focal plane and therefore the distance from the front of the lens is much less. Often I find this too close to the subject. Prior to migrating to MFT I used Canon APSC cameras and a Sigma 105 mm lens. This was a much larger piece of glass but I found the working distance more useful. I would like an MFT macro lens with a focal length of c. 100 mm.
I use the Pan Leica 50-200 at 200mm when I need more range for macro. In fact, I love the way it blurs the background for flower shots. Half of my macro shots are taken using this lens. My son has the Oly 40-150 with 1.4x and it also does a very good job for macro .
I use my Panasonic GX8 often with the Canon Macro Lens 2,8/100mm, adapted with the metabones EF-M43 Adapter. With this combination i can chose image stabilisation in lens or Body. The optical quality of this combination is amazing! With this combination the work distance is very good too! The distance between object and sensor is 302mm in scale 1:1!
I am wondering if we can pixel shift while we are using focus stacking mood, means; can I get a 80 mp final stacked photo from the camera and having the both options functioning in the same time? thank you

Had a go with mine a few days ago on a spider in the middle of the web. Wasn't too impressed with my results and the fact that the spider & web were moving in the wind didn't help. Should have maybe stopped down to f4 as the DoF isn't very deep.
Step down even more to f/5.6 or f/6.3 can help with the DoF control even better at times, but extra care should be taken about your safety shutter speed. This particular lens is perfectly usable at f/8, and diffusion only really kicks in after f/11.
Another greet video. I don't use Olympus gear and I will not mention it. Just a questione, is this lens compatibile with the tc? Nave you ever use this combo? I had used this combo to do colse up image and also with my macro lens.
You can use it with a the Olympus tele-converter if you use it with an extension tube so that the tele-converter protrusion goes into the extension tube.
I bought kenko 10mm and 16mm extension tube. I want use together with mzuiko macro 60mm. But the screen on my omd only grey. I would like to try with teleconverter 1.4x but the extension tube hole is to small:( have u any tips? Thanks
Yes, it technically works and does does Post Focus Stacking. I found, however, that I was not happy with the results of 'in camera focus stacking' do to the focus breathing issues. On Olympus cameras, they do a hefty crop of the image because of the focus breathing. Using the Panasonic 30mm Macro with the GH5 produced much better results than the Oly 60mm macro. I now use the EM1-2 and the panasonic 30mm macro with focus backeting. Then I use Helicon focus (Much better then Photoshop) to stack the images.
What am I doing wrong? When I focus, I see a macro image of the subject aka an extreme close up. But when I click it, it goes away capturing a non-close up image. I have dialed all the close up buttons to the closest shot. I will appreciate your help. Thanks
Most likely you have the magnify on. That will make the image in the EVF and LCD appers bigger. It is only bigger for the purpose of seeing better to focus.
someone just posted this lens on FB, the reason i searched the reviews, and i viewed your review. im not a professional, but i am looking for a lens that i can bring anywhere regardless, what i mean something i shoot fast moving, portraits, landscape, stolen shots (my favourite) macro, night modes. can i get just just one lens or i need at least 3?
It is hard to say how many lenses you need, but with this 60mm macro you can do all of that. It all depends on your style. I am curios, what are stolen shots?

There’s nothing quite like maneuvering around a macro subject using an Olympus camera with this specific lens. I feel energized using the Olympus vs. say... my D850 with a 105 that absolutely zaps my strength after a short while. With the Olympus camera and this wonderful little lens I can shoot for a much longer period w/o fatigue. I’m very happy with this lens and it’s size and quality are perfect for me. I have had the Zuiko 50mm f2 macro lens for years and use it when I need a macro lens. While it probably doesn’t focus as fast it still produces outstanding images. But I must use an adaptor as well as a tube to get 1:1. I do love macro work and enjoy the many possibilities. Thanks for the video Peter, and “bye for now”.
The Zuiko 50mm offers 1:2 on 35mm cameras but 1:1 on mft. To get 2:1 one only needs the OM 25 extension tube!
This lens has been great. Bought it for 300 bucks last year. I also have the 30mm. I use the 60 for lizards, tree frogs, and snakes I frequently see and can get close up on. I intend to use it more in warmer months for educational purposes (showing people what snakes are what and how to deal with seeing them without hurting them/getting hurt).

Thanks Peter. Another great video. I regularly use this 60 mm lens to monitor bumblebees in my state (Maine, USA) and also to document moths showing up on my house lights during summer. Have you ever thought of uploading them to iNaturalist? I'm in Ontario, and as far as moths go, our province is an ID powerhouse, the AI IDs for species are pretty amazing. As far as bumblebees goes, John Ascher is an expert for this group, and he regularly reviews iNat and provides IDs on this group
I started with the Panasonic 25mm f1.8 and a set of extension tubes. Works pretty well and image quality is very good. Just can not use image stacking, and working distance is a bit closer. Thanks to you, I'm now strongly considering adding the 60mm to my kit. :)

My favourite macro lens is the fabulous OM Zuiko 50mm f3.5. A couple of weeks after purchasing this lens I had (for the 1st time ever) a photo published in a national newspaper.

I like the OM Zuiko 35-70mm f3.3-4.5 also which at 231g is a very portable zoom that has a close focus facility.
Just loving this lens. First trip in to the garden with auto focus and hand held. Flipped the lever to 1:1 and got a superb picture of a fly first try. I locked the focus half button press and then moved the camera to focus and it seemed easy to use. Razor sharp images also. Reminds me of the 12-50mm which had a sort of macro but this 60mm is something extra special I think.
I shot with the Oly 60mm yesterday. Looking at the photos on the LED screen, I wasn’t sure if I’d nailed the focus, but when I processed them on my iPad the clarity was pretty good. Thanks once again for a wonderful and informative video!

I bought this lens when it was on sale for the bargain price of £270, and absolutely love it. Most of my shots have been indoors and needed a good light setup, but that's because my EM10 MK2 isn't weather sealed and the rain has been constant over here. Huge amount of fun though!
The best thing about this lens from my point of view, is its lens hood. No screws, no knobs, simply bayonet on and pull it back however much you desire. Streamline and lightweight.
Wish most future Olympus lenses past the 25mm (50mm FF equivalent) focal length can come with lens hoods of similar configuration.
Or just simply make after-market variations for existing lenses. Consumers are already paying extra for Olympus lens hoods (which is a lame for itself), why not make the functionality more worth of the price tag?
And Olympus, if you are listening, give your future macro lenses a MF clutch. It's the only element that still makes me hesitate of going to 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO for macro work with MF at times.

Thanks for talking about this lens, the 60mm is my favourite right now. I have used it a lot for the past 9 months. The quality is superb. I use it for macro and close-up. For serious macro it is the best option for m43.
Before I had this lens I used my Oly 45mm f1.8 with the Olympus MCON-P02 macro adapter. I recommend this solution for those who own a 45mm but are not sure about macro because it is a reasonable price. That image quality is excellent too. I extension tubes too but I prefer the macro adapter, it is easier to use and there the quality is retained.
I have been trying to get a hold of the MCON-P02 macro adapter, but havent yet. It seems to be a good option also when starting out macro photography.

@@yvesbrissette9831 The 25mm is listed on the Olympus website for the MCON-P02 so it will work. But will it work *well*? I don't know as I don't have the Oly 25 lens. Generally it is better to have a longer focal length for macro. With the 25mm lens you might have to get very close to the subject. I hope that helps.
Peter, thanks again for another video about Olympus gear. The 60mm F2.8 Macro was one of the first lenses I acquired after moving to micro four thirds. I used it mostly for shooting flowers hand-held. Although this is an excellent lens, I didn't like the finicky focusing-range switch and it wasn't a real match for my needs. I sold it, and now use the Olympus 50mm F2.0 four thirds with an adapter. This piece of excellent glass works for macro/closeups and portraits. It works best on my E-M1 Mark II, but not as well on my PEN-F.

Another option is the four thirds 35mm F 3.5. It's a good lens but it focuses quite slowly.

Good review, Peter. I do think this lens is sharper than you suggest, though I will admit to almost always using it at f5.6 or f8. It is light and able to capture moving insects and blowing flowers very well. I rarely use focus rails, but of course it works with those as well. This is one of my first M4/3 lenses (used with an E-P2) and it remains one of the most frequently used of my collection. I will agree it isn’t a travel lens though... the 12-100 IS lens focuses close enough to satisfy macro needs on the road. Thanks.
Yes, the 12-100mm f4 is actually almost a macro lens, good for close ups anyway.

I bought it half year ago and meanwhile my favorite lens apart from 12-40 is the 60mm. I'm always finding something tiny in nature looking great when using a macro.

Peter, have you tried using the 60mm Macro lens with the MC-14 teleconverter? I just obtained a set of Pixco extension tubes. The 10mm tube fits over the MC-14. The 16mm tube does not, and neither do my Neewer extension tubes. However, once you have the 10mm Pixco tube attached to the front of the MC-14, you can attach another extension tube...and then the 60mm Macro lens. Just so you know, the 10mm tube by itself does not clear the MC-14 enough to allow attachment of the 60mm Macro lens. You need at least 20mm of extension to attach the Macro 60mm to the MC-14.
So, to be clear. Camera, then MC-14, then Pixco 10mm ext. tube, then one additional extension tube or more, then the 60mm Macro lens. I've also attached a Raynox 250 closeup lens to the 60mm Macro lens...and now we have super macro photography!!! Instead of 1:1...I get 3:1 or 4:1, maybe even 5:1.
I have not used the 60mm with the MC-14. The MC-14 does not fit in myy extension tubes. But I have heard that with some tubes it is possible. Thanks for sharing your set up! Sounds great.
@@ForsgardPeter Okay...I took my setup out in the field yesterday to attempt focus stacking a snowdrop flower up close. It didn't "seem" to work. I used 15 images, but a focus differential of 1. F stop was 4. All the pictures looked about the same...the only difference caused by a slight breeze. Very slight, but at that magnification, it doesn't take much at all.
So, I tried my setup indoors. Camera, then MC-14, then 26mm of Pixco ext. tubes, then 60mm Oly macro lens with f stop at 4. Focus stacking 15 shots and it's hard to tell that the lens moved at all. Changed the focus differential to 3. Still, precious little difference. Changed the focus differential to 10 and now I can finally see movement. Depth of field...about 2 mm!!! The lens was set to focus at 1:1, so at the highest magnifications, the depth of field is very, very shallow. Obviously, I will have to set that F stop higher to improve that depth of field. At f/5.6, depth of field is maybe 3mm. At f/8, it's about 4.5mm. At f/11, it's 6mm. At f/16 its maybe 7.5mm. And remember, that's with a focus differential of 10. Pretty thin. But it does work.
Great news...I have an MC-20 coming in the mail. I'm wondering if it will fit my extension tubes. No worries, the main reason I'm getting it is to extend my 40-150mm pro lens for telephoto shots.

I am a macro lens fanboy, including the M Zuiko 60mm! Travel is excellent as this lens is relatively compact & lightweight, especially on my Pen-f. With focus bracketing and range control, this combo is better than many of my old dslr & film macro kits. I use the OEM hood and it is excellent for normal telephoto work. The Olympus macro technology & lenses have long been excellent compared to some other makers’ versions...imo. :-)
You do not find that the focal length is too much for travel?
This is a stellar lens! Its telephoto characteristic is especially useful for photographing insects, because it is difficult to approach them too closely. I have even been able to capture the mites on the legs of a bee. The only problem I have with this lens is the focus limiting button, which is difficult to operate, because it is too flat. Other than that, nothing than praise for this lens. The lens hood is unfortunately not included, but it is well designed, and makes for easy storage and quick deployment, so it is definitely recommended.

the Olympus 60mm Makro lens is one of the top lenses in my portfolio! I often have it with me while walking around because it's really thin and it fits in nearly every foto bag additionaly to the other choises. The 7-14 mm Olympus wide angel zoom plus a nifty fifty and the light tele/Makro (the Olympus 60 mm), a very often used combination of my lenses...
P.S. I really would appreciate, if you would make more vids like the one "lost spaces...with comments on the pics of your followers"
I have done a few videos where I comment on viewers videos, but I should do ore of them, you are right.
I would say all true macro lenses are outstanding, optically, speaking. They're just not compact and are slow for their size. I had a Tokina 90/2.5 for my NIkon FM2N that I just loved. (though it was too sharp for portraits, in the film days) I just bought the 30 mm f/3.5 macro. What a great value! My intent was digitizing negatives with the Nikon ES-2 "Digitizer Set", but I may use it for other things too. f/3.5 is not fast, but it's not f/5.6 either...
I got the Oly 30mm macro lens too...its just as sharp as the 45mm 1.8 lens.
I recently got 16mm extension tubes for my 40-150mm f4-5.6 R. Not sure if it's true 1:1, but it's been a good cheap option for doing macro/close-up. Maybe I'll upgrade to the 60mm soon.
Extension Tubes ared a good start. The advantage is that they make any lens to be a close-up lens.
I was taught (in the 70s) that the correct term is photomacrography for up to 1:1 and microphotography for closer than 1:1. Is the term a matter of taste, location, or did my source get it wrong?

Reason I would buy the 60mm over the 30mm is the working distance from the subject for 1:1 but I never had a need for that close of magnification. However I've been tempt to buy it because it goes on sale for $350 sometimes. I use the 40-150mm with a 16mm extension tube. Stacking two extension tubes sometimes gives an undesirable reflection of the tube walls into the sensor and the one 16mm tube is good enough for me.

@@ForsgardPeter here is a link, the first three images are from my 40-150mm f/4-5.6 with 16mm extension tube. Rarely ever use it. For most flower photography, I only need a minimum focus distance between 20-30cm and both 14-42mm R and 12-40mm do a fine job.

Rob Trek gave me the idea to get the extension tubes but also with the 3rd image and the black and white image of a flower. Underexpose by 3 stops and use manual flash to black out the background.
The picture of the hot wheels cars was my first time trying live composite. The bird photos is where I used a tripod with live view remote control from inside my friend's house so not interrupt the mother from feeding her babes on the porch.
I'm a jack of all trades but a master of none but I do seem to lean more towards event and candid photography.

It is great for those subjects, but yes it works in the nature too. Jewellery is not easy to photograph. What kinda set up you use?
@@ForsgardPeter I know Jewelry is difficult to photograph. I actually use NIKON DSLRs to photograph it. I use the NIKONs because I can control it from a computer using NIKON software and I have 3 NIKON speedlights which can be synced. I can mount the camera on a tripod for stability. I like to use a primary lens particularly the 85mm f1.8, but will use the Tamron 18-250 mm for convenience. I have found aperture priority to be best at f8, f11, and f16 settings. I have an external plug in power supply for the camera so I don't need to worry about low batteries. For non flash jewelry photography I use daylight balanced LEDs and CFLs as my light sources. The room light sources are also daylight balanced and the camera set on daylight white balance. The room has light gray, almost white walls. The OLYs are my field and travel cameras, My wife does most of the jewelry photography using her cell phone and a photo tent with LED desk lamps. I've been trying to persuade her to try the OM-D with wifi to transfer her photos directly to her computer. She would find easier than her cell phone and get much better photos.
In fact, there is at least one option weatherproof macro lens: ZD 50/2 + MMF3. The EC14 and EC 20 teleconverters and macro rings can be used to increase the focal length and magnification. I myself use this set, bought for ridiculous money on the secondary market in a state close to new.

@@ForsgardPeter Yes, my copy gives a very detailed picture. If used with the EC14, the image quality to my taste does not suffer, complete with the EC20 the Central area is also sharp, but it makes sense to stop down the aperture to 5,6-8 to sharpen the edges of the image. The quality of the 50/2 optics is sufficient even for use with the EC14 in highres mode. And this set cost me about 140 euros for 50/2, 112 euros for EC14, 140 euros for EC20 and 115 euros for MMF3. The EC14 and EC20 were purchased primarily for use with the ZD 50-200/2.8-3.5 SWD, but they are suitable with ZD 50/2.
I like it fine, but an update is definitely in order. The fidgety focus limit switch is annoying.
Olympus - how about a 100mm f/2 pro? A bit shorter focus throw would be nice too.
You are right this lens is one of those M.Zuiko lenses that could be upgraded. The suggestion about 100mm pro macro is good.
I would like 100mm focal length, but why f/2? Its depth of field is too shallow for macro photography anyway, so it is better to have f/2.8 or f/4.0 to keep costs, weight, and size down.
You are right a macro lens does not need to bee very fast. Even a f4 would be ok.

Video idea: review this lens with the new 2.0x teleconverter. Compare it to the 300mm F4 also with the 2.0x teleconverter. Can you handhold shoot with it, or does it require a tripod? Can you focus stack with the teleconverter, again with or without a tripod?
MC-20 is not compatable with the 60mm f2.8 macro. I would love to test the MC-20 with the 300m f4, but I do not have the MC-20 right now. I believe bracketing is possible, but I need to test if stacking is also possible.
I do macro with my telezoom 40-150mmPRO and tubes... also w MC14 and MC20, works... also w 300mmIS PRO.
Tubes is a really good option for macro. The 300mm f4 is almost a macro itself. The closest focusing distance is so short.

I too was very disappointed that the 60 did not include a lens hood. I think hoods are absolutely necessary and should be part of the lens packeage, but the manufacturers seem to think of them as a way to add some profit to their lens business. Olympus does sell one for this lens, but it costs $50, which is highway robbery.
The good news is that you can buy a generic 46mm telephoto hood, which works just fine, for about six dollars.
I agree that a lens hood is something that should be included.

This is an excellent lens. I have used this on a macro rail for focusing stacking. I have used it in combination with Raynox lenses for magnifications > 1:1. Vibrations are quite low with my PenF and 60mm combo. I still need to better understand the in camera focus bracketing. It would be great to have better info on the step sizes (1 to 10)
I have tried to figure out the step size, but it is impossible to get the answer. It depends on the distance and thats why it is hard to figure out.
The focus bracketing focus step that you need can very greatly from lens to lens. I don't use my 60mm macro for focus bracketing or stacking because of focus breathing. To determine the focus step, I test each lens at each focus step and then look at the results to determine the best setting. From my tests, my Panasonic 30mm Macro needs a step of 5, the Leica 8-18 needs a step of 2, and the Oly 8mm fisheye needs a step of 1.

I love this super sharp lens with its nice working distance for single shots. However, its focus breathing is very extreme near 1:1. This makes it far from ideal for focus stacking. Same with the Leica 45mm macro. The Panasonic 30mm Macro is also ultra sharp without the focus breathing issues. Hopefully Olympus can come out with a version 2 of the lens that resolves the focus breathing issue.
I like using my Fuji X20 advanced compact for macro. It has two dedicated macro modes and a much smaller sensor that gives greater depth in focus than cameras with larger sensors.
While I do have extension tubes that work well with my 14-140 M4/3 lens, especially with focus stacking, its just not as convenient as using the little Fuji. This is just my preference and not everyone has the choice of equipment for different uses that I have.

Great video! I’m a Sony shooter. I’m interested in switching to Olympus for macro only. I am renting the OM - 1 now but I’m wondering can I get a cheaper Olympus camera and still get the same results?
It depends what you mean by same results. OM-1 has the newest sensor and has slightly better image quality that the models. How important that is depends. I know som who does macro with OM-5 and are totally happy.

However, I am considering going for the much cheaper option of using my exisiting lens (12-45mm) with a pack of 10mm &16mm Automatic Extension Tubes. Appreciate any views please
If you have the budget 600mm F2.8 macro is a better option. On the hand 12-45mm plus extension tubes works well too. Not sure if Focus stacking will work, mots likely not.

This lens shows a close up ratio of 1:4 > 1:1 max. Did you ever use it (succesfully ;-) with a extension tube, or the Raynox DCR, or another closeup lens to get a higher ratio ? (And if, than whát ratio)
I have not used it that much with extension tubes and with Raynox close-up lens.
I using EM-5 mkII with this lens which I've owned for a year but have found so little info on how to use it well, specifically the focus limiting switch, getting the whole bug in focus (depth of field) in time before they move, focusing fast before the bug moves, etc. This is what I thought was the benefit of buying a specialty macro lens.
I've found your videos informative and helpful but unfortunately not this time.
Most of the time was devoted to general info on the lens, mildly interesting but not the reason I bought this lens. How to take photos using the focus limiting switch with examples and how to use that frustrating spring-loaded last part 1:1 were you have to fight with turning the switch against the spring while trying to focus.
I understand the suggestion of using the rail (don't have one) not sure it would be worth the extra cost when what I want to shoot (insects etc) don't sit and pose quietly while I set up the tripod, rail, camera and adjust the lens.
Which brings me to the other part of this video I wish you had addressed. Extension tubes, how does that compare to the macro lens? Show us pictures shot with both methods would have been very helpful. Which of the two pieces of equipment, 60mm lens or extension tubes would have an advantage (easier and quicker) in different shooting situations, still life or outdoors with a moving target - insects, etc.

I've just been frustrated with this macro 60mm lens and how to use it, actually in practice use it and use it well.
I am planning on comparing the 60mm f2.8 to Extension Tubes.
This is my only 1:1 macro, I have used it for more than two years now. I do not like the the way the focusing limiter was implemented, with the little spring mechanism and cannot be kept at 1:1. Other than that I simply love this lens...
Switch to manual focus, then it will stay at 1:1.
This lens also doubles as a good portrait lens. You should try it out

I have this lens and I love shooting close-up, macro and portraits with it. Unfortunately, I have a body that is too old to have focus bracketing. Which do you think is more efficient: a focus rail to manually focus and stack or focus bracketing in camera?
Stacking is a worth to try. You just need to experiment what focusing difference between shots is the best for each situation. It is a bit hard to figure out how much one step is when adjusting the focusing difference. If you are able to manage focus bracketing with a focusing rail, then go for it. I personally use the focus bracketing/stacking in camera.

Now ,having two OM D cameras,the EM10 mark2 and the EM10 mark3,I bought a zuiko 50mm 3.5 macro for a few bucks.This lens works perfect with

If you can reach 1:1 with the lens, then it is a macro.
I always used a Raynox adapter on my Panasonic 100-300mm which gives me nice 3:1.
I recently tried 300mm plus a reversed 12 mm, which gives completely insane results. I could see the structue of the hairs on my arm...
Probably something like 25:1 and not macro anymore but micro photography :P

I use the Raynox DCR-250, which generally makes the depth of field really tiny, but the results are sharp enough especially when you consider that you can turn any lens into a macro lens. But a tele lens is required since you will get strong vignetteting otherwise (The Raynox 150 is better for non-tele).
For the "microscope" I just put my camera with the tele lens (100-300mm mk1) on the table and tried to place my 12 mm f2 Samyang in front of it so that it's lined up. Since there wasn't that much light coming through the contraption anymore (I had to use a small aperture on both lenses becauseof the depth of field), I used a strong flashlight to be able to focus and take a picture. But the lenses probably weren't 100% aligned, so it wasn't too sharp. But still really impressive!
Now I ordered a "reverse macro coupler" for less than 10€ which basically makes it possible to screw the lenses together on their filter threads. The results should be better...

It could work on dentistry too. It focuses close, but can also be used as normal small telephotolens.
I shall be trying focus stacking using the M5 mk 2 with the 60mm macro lens. Can you explain whether the focus is shifted out or in (or both) when the 8 images are taken? Should I initially focus on the mid point of the subject, the furthest part or the nearest part of the image? Thanks. Peter.
Focus on the nearest point. The first image will be taken with that focusing distance and the second one with a bit closer and the rest longer than the first focus point.

There should not be any problems. I have not tested that combo, but Olympus lenses in general works fine with Panasonic bodies.

I use the 60 mm macro and it is capable of some great images, however the 19 cm working distance is measured from the focal plane and therefore the distance from the front of the lens is much less. Often I find this too close to the subject. Prior to migrating to MFT I used Canon APSC cameras and a Sigma 105 mm lens. This was a much larger piece of glass but I found the working distance more useful. I would like an MFT macro lens with a focal length of c. 100 mm.
I use the Pan Leica 50-200 at 200mm when I need more range for macro. In fact, I love the way it blurs the background for flower shots. Half of my macro shots are taken using this lens. My son has the Oly 40-150 with 1.4x and it also does a very good job for macro .
A bit longer could be even better.
I use my Panasonic GX8 often with the Canon Macro Lens 2,8/100mm, adapted with the metabones EF-M43 Adapter. With this combination i can chose image stabilisation in lens or Body. The optical quality of this combination is amazing! With this combination the work distance is very good too! The distance between object and sensor is 302mm in scale 1:1!
You can try this bunch: ZD 50/2 + MMF3 + EC14 (70/2,8) and EC-20 (100/4) teleconverters.

Had a go with mine a few days ago on a spider in the middle of the web. Wasn't too impressed with my results and the fact that the spider & web were moving in the wind didn't help. Should have maybe stopped down to f4 as the DoF isn't very deep.
Wind is always a problem outdoors when making macro photography.
Step down even more to f/5.6 or f/6.3 can help with the DoF control even better at times, but extra care should be taken about your safety shutter speed. This particular lens is perfectly usable at f/8, and diffusion only really kicks in after f/11.

You can use it with a the Olympus tele-converter if you use it with an extension tube so that the tele-converter protrusion goes into the extension tube.

Yes, it technically works and does does Post Focus Stacking. I found, however, that I was not happy with the results of 'in camera focus stacking' do to the focus breathing issues. On Olympus cameras, they do a hefty crop of the image because of the focus breathing. Using the Panasonic 30mm Macro with the GH5 produced much better results than the Oly 60mm macro. I now use the EM1-2 and the panasonic 30mm macro with focus backeting. Then I use Helicon focus (Much better then Photoshop) to stack the images.

What am I doing wrong? When I focus, I see a macro image of the subject aka an extreme close up. But when I click it, it goes away capturing a non-close up image.
I have dialed all the close up buttons to the closest shot.

Most likely you have the magnify on. That will make the image in the EVF and LCD appers bigger. It is only bigger for the purpose of seeing better to focus.

It is hard to say how many lenses you need, but with this 60mm macro you can do all of that. It all depends on your style. I am curios, what are stolen shots?
