  • @ddegn

Tracer rounds would pass right through a Zeppelin without igniting it.
Incendiary rounds wouldn't take down Zeppelins on their own. The hydrogen had to mix with the air before it would burn. A mixture of normal bullets and incendiaries were used. A relatively large hole had to be ripped in the Zeppelin before a combustible mixture of air and hydrogen was created.
Thanks for another fun and interesting video Johnny.

I have used a pen style signal flare during emergency water procedures training. They have a spring loaded "firing pin" that will strike a primer in turn sets off a powder charge to launch the parachute flare. One tip: fire a flare when you observe an aircraft or ship is in line of sight of you and it isnt too windy.

You must not have seen the movie 'Dead Calm' with Sam Neil, Billy Zane, and a 19 yo. Nicole Kidman, as this was a missed opportunity to show the best movie 'kill' via flare gun. This is a 1989 Ozploitation horror film which got the attention of a Mr Thomas Cruise. Billy Zane plays the role of a psychopathic killer who is himself killed (I think by Kidman's character), at the end of the movie by having a flare shot into his mouth. I saw this at the theatre in 1989 and the shot looked more comedic than horror in my memory, but it is still very cool. And if you keep the idea that this is an exploitation film in mind, it really doesn't matter. It's still a really cool effect which I greatly enjoyed at the time and on watching a few times since then.

I must point out the obvious fact that "Dragon's Breath" rounds are optimal for killing vampires or other creatures that are invulnerable to bullets but not fire. You missed the clip of the drunk Australian firing a flaregun at his head. The shell just bounced off his skull. He probably had a sore neck from his head being whipped violently to the side from the impact of the shell but it did not penetrate. He ended up looking a bit dazed but his head didn't explode or catch fire.

When in the coast guar we had mk 127 parachute flare training, you fire it by slamming the cap at the bottom. instructions are to turn your hand upside down to stiffen the arm and lock the elbow... One guy didn't do so and ended up firing it horizontally and hit a sailboat moored nearby.

In the Canadian Forces we did a lot of flare training, don't have to be on range and it's fun but also it's so essential that everyone understands how to operate whatever current models the forces is using. I've seen so many wonky mechanisms over the years, my fav is the basic stick with pull cord, dead easy, no one can fuck that up!

Interestingly in JP3, the flare gun used is an Olin *25mm* flare gun, which of course is bigger than the usual 12 gauge.

1:08: That's some chill ship sinking, it seems.
2:22: That sound effect did not seem accurate.
3:35: Something I'm not too fond of doing in X-Wing Alliance/TIE Fighter Total Conversion's Reimagined campaign.
3:45: Does the Spectre even need to always do that flare firing method in any evasive maneuver?
I think we might need more GorillaZ examples.
What is it with snake and worm monsters being weak to flares fired on their gullets?
Of course, double-barrelled pistols should be very impractical.
Surprisingly, Jordan Peele's Us isn't here. Subverts the use of flares as a flamethrower-esque weapon, and yet it did help out putting fire on a boat, I guess.
Addendum: Of course we also see that Hotline Miami-esque John Wick 4 scene.

Putting shotgun shells in a flare gun, even a modified one, is pretty dumb indeed. It's not like shotguns are difficult to acquire, even outside gun crazy countries like the US.

I haven't used flares for signaling, (maybe coloured smoke has taken over that role?) but they're still used for illumination, although maybe less than they used to be due to night vision devices being so common. Modern parachute flares come in tubes about a foot long and an inch in diameter, you take off the end caps, pull the string to launch the flare, then the tube is garbage.

I was hoping this was more about how cheese flare guns in movies are. Like how much is not like a rocket propelled thermite grenade like the movies, and how nasty and effective it actually is or isn't when used like the movies. Still good video and I appreciate the history and knowledge.

Reminds me of the scene in the anime "Gate" where the roman empire like enemy tries to sneak upon the JSDF during night, only to get lid up first by flares and then by artillery and gunfire. (Episode 2)
