You absolutely have to find a workable, enjoyable, sustainable model and stick to it everyday or you will burn out. In 2020 I went HOG WILD. I made 2x as much flipping cards as I ever did from a yearly salary. Not just the prices, but the magnitude of listing 100s of items, keeping track of all of them, keeping in schedule with shipping and feedback, etc played a huge part in my success. As the dips in price started happening, my methods slacked and in turn, my profits have slipped. I have the product to still make a consistent living, I just can't get back into the grind I used to have. Consistency will either kill or make your profit margins.

I feel like if you were to start doing what you did in 2020 today, and then another market explosion happened like in 2020, I feel you would be in a much better place mentally. Putting in the work with a smaller reward will wreak havoc on your mental state. I have been reselling / card dealing most of my life since 1984 and I can tell you I have seen people come and go because of mentality. The #1 thing I can not emphasize enough is organization and work flow. I can get 1000 cards up no issue in a few hours without any software because of this. But you have to work

    • @joedill4311
      @joedill4311 Рік тому

@@cardmarketmedia imo, organization becomes the number one enemy in large scale online selling, unless you're working with a partner or a team. Thats probably the #1 problem I have now. And I think its cuz the sales are still happening. But its 3 or 4 a day and not 15.....so I end up getting things mixed together and lost (at least momentarily.) I started selling with my dad in the mid 80's and have been on my own with it since the late 90's. I think my biggest problem between then and now are keeping up with all of the posting, sales, shipping....while also being a full time single parent. I need my baby to step up like I did for my dad, way back when lol! Thanks for your comment though. It was spot on imo.

One thing that I’ve always been scared of or not sure how to properly manage it, but would love to see a segment around keeping track of sales records from eBay and just about how you track money and money out. I feel like I spend more time doing bookkeeping than I do listing cards.

As a beginner how do you keep track of all costs, shipping, grading, all office supplies, etc . Sounds tricky at your selling levels?

I honestly don't believe Porter and I would have started collecting if not for people like Beau helping educate us and provide encouragement. Just learn and card pro, thanks. Graded is fixed but run my current max of 250 auctions a month, .99 start which is 85% of store. I have 3 stores try to list 5-10 each store each day 7days a week but I list double these for drafts for days I cannot list. I'm full-time reseller but I buy storage units and sell a fleamarkets 1-2 days a week. I had to adjust what I was doing for last 7 yrs last 9mos lost wife of 30yrs. I’ve made $3,000 so far

But the fees can be frustrating
Listing and shipping does get boring

And this video gave some good tips to boost your algorithm
    I do all buy now
But I’ll now change to free shipping to see how it goes
And I will start listing everyday
I had no idea about that I was posting all my cards as fast as I could once I ran out of free listings I’ll stop
Probably why my sales slowed down after I stop listing

I have listened to this class twice and it's packed full of great information. I do have a question in regards to listing limits and fees on eBay. I realized just in the past month, I started hitting a 250 listing limit. Anything beyond that I am getting $0.35 fee deducted. I've looked into this on eBay and they seem to say I am not eligible for a lift on the cap. I assume it has to do with number of sales. I hit over 110 items sold just a week or so ago and I've been selling on eBay only since last July. In January and February, I was focused on expanding my inventory and posting 10+ cards per day. But, I am a little discouraged by these obstacle. I would like to continue to do low end, high volume sales and build up over time. Any advice?

  • @PhuryousOne

One thing that is important and can work out to your advantage, if you have a raw card in high demand that is in superb shape, you need to offer extreme close-up pictures of the surface, edges, and corners showing that. Some people are looking to purchase raw cards to grade. If they feel confident they can get a certain number based on your pictures, you have a better chance of making a premium on the sale in auction or buy it now, especially if there's a profit for them to grade. One thing I would like to see sellers get hip to in the future is using the abilities of their cameras to zoom in close enough to a card to see the actual printing design. This would be great to eliminate those seller claiming reprints to be authentic. But I practice what I preach, and eventhough I am a small scale seller with only 450 sales in about 8 years, I notice my raw cards sell for more than what others are asking all the time.

@@CHASINGCARDBOARD Since my last comment, this has inspired me to start listing. I have alot of cards sitting around from breaks Ive got in and have been putting off listing these for a very long time. Since this stream ive listed over 50 yards and have thousands more. One big question I have is if cards arent selling what are some things you do to get them off your hands. Some of the lower end stuff seems like it can become stagnant pretty fast. Also not doing this to build a brand or store just want to sell my cards that sit around for extra cash. Thank you for the amazing video

In what universe does it make any sense to sell (and move in volume) $1, 2 or even $5 dollar cards on eBay?... Look, I've been in the hobby for 40-years and have been a dealer for nearly as long. And if it matters I've been selling on eBay for 20+ years now - not that it matters, I just thought a little background info would help some understand where I'm coming from.... Anyway, I deal in vintage baseball and hockey primarily - tho I do sell vintage football and basketball, but vintage football holds little value relative to vintage baseball and hockey in general and basketball - I've just have had WAAAAY too many terrible experiences with basketball collectors over the years to even make dealing in basketball worth it..
But all that is beside the point - it makes no sense at all to list/sell/ship essentially dollar-bin cards, er cards under $5 bucks on eBay... Ok fine, I get it - you're making .30 cents a card, and if you're moving 250 cards a day - you're making $100 bucks, but is the hassle and time really worth it??
I mean I won't list ANY card for less than $15 unless I'm making 400-500% profit - meaning I paid $2-2.50 for the card, and the card sells regularly for $15-20 bucks on eBay... Moreover, I try to deal in raw high-grade, high-end vintage cards - and when it comes to modern and ultra-modern cards I try to deal in cards that are extremely rare/scarce serial numbered/inserts/parallels etc. It depends on the player and the year/set the card is from but I try to keep the older serial numbered cards prior to 2010 numbered to /500 or less, and anything post 2010 numbered to /250 or less - and that's just a rule of mine when I'm buying... Because look, when you have a card that only comes to market once, twice or maybe three times a year - you can ask whatever you want for it - and usually when they do come to market and the price is reasonable I just buy it to get it off the market....
I suppose my point is that it makes a hell of a lot more sense and certainly more profit to deal in cards that usually sell for between $50-$500 bucks if you can buy the cards at a fraction of what you sold them for..... But like I said: I've been in the hobby for 40-years, so I know exactly what to look for when it comes to buying cards (and collections). I know the rare insert sets, rare parallels - which vintage cards have consistent flaws (like the Ozzie Smith Rookie and centering), I know the high #'s and SP's from all vintage baseball and hockey sets - so finding product to flip for an egregiously enormous profit isn't a problem for me - it's time consuming - but it's not a problem. Look, I'd rather be on eBay looking for the next card, lot or collection to buy instead of waiting in line at the post office, or spending 3 hours a day packing up dollar-bin cards.... So that's pretty much my strategy - sell a couple grand in cards per week via 10-20 sales - then that way I only have to go to the post office a couple of times a week and spend minimal time packing everything up.... And look - like I said - I buy a lot of collections myself, and do you know what I do with the stuff that doesn't sell for at least $10 on eBay?? I put them in a box and do a card show once a month or bi-monthly.... I have a TON of that stuff - easily 100,000 cards that I put in $1, $2, $5 and $10 dollar bins/boxes - that - and I make loaded "mystery packs" I sell for $10 bucks -- and you know what?? those bins and those mystery packs drive TONS of traffic to your tables, and then of course these same collectors can see the high-end cards you have for sale...
I mean I get the "selling strategy" er "business model" you guys are debating, and obviously there is nothing wrong with it - nor am I criticizing it - I just think it's way more work than the return/profit's you guys are pocketing.... You guys have been in the hobby long enough to identify rare cards, er high-grade vintage cards - so why not take advantage of your experience in the hobby and start seeking that stuff out instead of selling 1987 Topps Mark McGwire's for $1.99 free shipping??
Also, if you're going to list a card - then list it as an auction - but always start the auction off at the PRICE YOU WANT FOR THE CARD, then make sure you have offers turned on.... Because look, I sell 90% of my cards via offer - and sometimes I get offers higher than what I listed the card for.....

Selling low-end is not for the faint of heart. The question you should be asking is..how can certain sellers make the #s work on the low end/volume game…because some us do very well.
Technology is your friend in this world. It has changed the game.

You’re absolutely 100% correct the only thing you left out though in this video is the collectors standpoint .if you’re in it for the fun of collecting the cards themselves ,then the value really doesn’t matter much I’ve been collecting since 2006 and I’m all for getting these cards for much cheaper now and all the different designs they have. I just put a nice order in for some affordable hobby boxes I hope it continues to drop because these aren’t “investments” a 401k over 50 years is an investment lol

I still enjoy Beckett. I buy them every month. Lots of times Beckett is ahead of ebay on who's hot or cold. Just because the last one or two sold for something isn't really the current value. Not a fan of the comp thing and never will be. When I'm out buying cards and the person I'm buying from has to start comping things I just walk away. I don't have time to stand around because he doesn't know how to price his cards. Beckett is not what it use to be but I still support it. Remember when we was kids there was all kinds of magazines on sports cards Beckett is about all that's left . Guess I'm old fashion I like to have a magazine to look at and read. Something to look forward to every month. Remember Tuff stuff we don't have nothing like that no more. eBay has ruined alot of things. It's both good and bad .

Selling cards is a labor of love licking 100 envelopes a day will make you rethink this business. I’ve been selling cards on eBay since 2010. Most people will come to this conclusion and drop out. I think it’s the new fad right now giving advice about selling cards. Every UA-cam channel now how to by and sell, my selling strategies. People are going to be in for a rude awakening.

This is primarily why I switched back to adding shipping costs after having experimented with free shipping for a while.
They say the “free shipping” is more attractive to customers, but I think that’s only if you’re able to hit a very low price point as well. If not, then having a low price point with shipping (and also shipping discounts on volume) is the best way to go.
