24 hr SURVIVAL CHALLENGE: Altoids Tin PSK Survival!

- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- We decided to not head to the coast where shellfish and fish are abundant, and instead to challenge ourselves on the eastern side of the Coast Range. With nothing but homemade Personal Survival Kits (PSK's), we have to make shelter, purify water, make fire, find food, and survive the bitter cold!

Awesome video!
Great video!
I really can’t stand reality TV except for “Alone”, which I think you’d be *great* on. This video reminded me I need to watch the most recent season 🙂
I hear you. It is a great show with talented people... and the only reality TV worth watching in my opinion.
Cheers!
Nice video
Thanks!
I like your vids man hope you blow up soon you deserve it 🙏
I read somewhere that cat tails can be ground into a flour like ingredient. Some say at best it thickens things like soup. Some swear if done right, its just flour. When you were eating the berries that you cooked all i could think of was "i wonder if they could have had pancakes" i could have watched this for much longer. If time ever permits, maybe you could do like a 3night series? Anyway, ALWAYS a joy to see you guys. God bless.
I have head that about cattail as well. I guess we will have to try! Glad you enjoyed it, and heck yes a 3 night sounds awesome!
Hey what kind of watch is that? 😂 jk
24hrs is too easy for you. Do a few days! I would join you
Lol. Alright man, we need to hatch a plan for exactly what goes into this several day challenge then, and what we are allowed to bring as far as gear. 10 items? 5 items? 1 item? We are down for whatever man. The stay-at-home dish looked great man. Hate to say it, but it may be a little while before we get to start collabs again, but after this all blows over, yes we are down.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 How about we each bring one of those little personalized survival kits and one oversized item, like a pot. We'll get it going once we're in the clear, hope it's not too far away!
@@OutdoorChefLife Sounds good man.
I love this idea. Id say 1 item thats obviously. Like a pot to cook in or bow and arrows, fishing hook, or flashlight. (Of course u will all have knives. I never go anywhere without 1. Even have 2 in my purse. So all will have that) and then 1 more item most ppl wouldnt think of that would be, with creativity and awsome item to have and use in a way it was not intended. Then of course the basic gear one would have anyway on a hike or hunting trip or what not.
OMG!!!! YAAASSSSSSS!!!! You and TAKU, 72 hour challenge!
Very cool, boys. Great trip out and great skills.
Thanks!
I found figure 8 knots (the one used for climbing) work excellently for line that doesn't like to stay in place.
Wow dude your channel is so entertaining awesome work Dr. Kev
Thanks man! Likewise!
Your point about not knowing you'll need to spend the night till the end of the day is a good one. That's why an Altoid sized survival kit and skill alone is a poor plan when traveling in wild places. Practicing this sort of thing, as you have illustrated, is good because of what you discover you should always have with you.👍
Get yourself an old computer hard drive and take the platters out of it. It has a half-inch site sight hole and a polished reflective surface. It make a great signal mirror.
Nice tip! You lost me at platters though. That sounds rad though.

I learned years ago that those small kits are just to basic for a real survival or self rescue situation. Most any hunter or hiker carries a small backpack so why not carry real gear. GI poncho and a light weight wool inner liner made from wool gouchos use,2nd poncho for shelter while my first is used in case it's raining because rain and freezing weather means the Grimm Reaper is chasing after you and you best know how to use your wits, skills and kit to beat him. Polish surplus cook kit with a folding WWII german fork spoon combo inside is 2 food side dishes, coffee, sugar, candies and a small $1.00 store can of spam. My fire kit is part of my pocket kit things are spread out. I can write a book but won't lol.
You have to use a surgeon knot. Not a loop but knot. How you tie off a suture..
Instead of plastic buy a pack of the window heat shrink film. It is lighter then plastic film and a lot tougher.
I learn so much from you.. thank you Kevin, Diane and everyone else that joins you.. *"Keep the Old Ways ALIVE"*
Thanks for the kind words!
So a couple points for further explanation on some of the chemistry discussed in this video: toyon contains cyanogenic glycosides, which break down into hydrogen cyanide during digestion, it doesn't contain inorganic cyanide in and of itself. The glycosides are water soluble, however, so parboiling can remove the toxic compounds. In ripe toyon, the glycosides are concentrated in the seeds (just like apples), and they are safe to eat as long as the seeds are removed. The major issue with eating toyon is the unpleasant astringency and mealy texture. The dock leaves do contain oxalic acid as you stated, but oxalic acid can give you more than a stomach ache: Oxalic acid is water soluble, but forms insoluble salts (calcium oxalate in particular). When the salts crystalize in the body it forms sharp, tiny little spikes. Deposition of calcium oxalate in the kidneys is what causes kidney stones. Many other vegetables contain oxalic acid including kale and broccoli. Fortunately for you foragers, dock does not contain significantly more than most other leafy green vegetables, and you'd have to eat a lot to cause any problems. Rhubarb, on the other hand, contains the highest levels of oxalic acid of the vegetables we'd deem edible, and it concentrates in the leaves. Over-consumption of rhubarb leaves can lead to kidney failure.
Great info! Thanks for sharing!
We need more vids
Came from fisherman's life channel, stayed for the content
Thanks for checking out the channel! We've got a heck of a lot of cool bushcraft/survival/catch n cook footage on the way!
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 I'll subscribe so i don't miss it then
Nice we wait for more stuff like this
@10:26 who makes that style of Tracker knife?
Lmao I'm sure the camera guys have food and essentials
Lol, I am the camera guy. None of us had anything but what you saw in the vid.
Do a 30 day survived challenge
I think we all kind of are right now. But I will see what I can do. I love what Ovens and Fowler have been up to lately!
i love this channel.
Me too! Thanks!
Where are you boys filming your videos? Recently got into bushcrafting but NorCal has so many restrictions within BLM lands, idk where to start.
Especially harder with the fire restrictions in place.
Keep searching National Forest and BLM and you will find some spots. This time of year is tricky, so we typically do not have fires in the summer unless on a beach with no wind. We shot that vid in Spring and we were already super paranoid about wildfires. My brother spent a good 45 min with a shovel (not part of the kit, but good safety precaution) clearing the ground around our shelters. We would not have felt comfortable otherwise. Also, we did have our fire permits. Good luck and stay safe!
Exactly what I needed today! Can't wait to get back outside 👍
Glad to hear it! Have you noticed how clear the sky is with so few cars on the streets? Hopefully the silver lining to all of this is we understand our impact on this Earth and do what we can to keep this lifestyle sustainable so that our children and their great grandchildren can enjoy the majesty of this Earth as we have! Thanks for watching!
Thanks guys for another great video! Only 29 cases in WY so far
Glad you enjoyed it rem! This is a crazy time we live in! But stay safe, and wash your hands and keep social distance twice as much as recommended and we will get through this!
That was a bunch of fun! Can't wait for the next adventure!
Yeah, it was nice to get in one last hurah before Corona!
What's is the name of the water lizard thingy again?
Rough-Skinned Newt. Cute and deadly.
Congrats on surviving for 24 hours! A fun session to watch with some great foraging and shelter building. Clearly longer term survival out in the cold bushcraft-style would be tough! I bet roasted gopher would have hit the spot.
We were all laughing about how good roast gopher was starting to sound. I will try to do a gopher catch n cook at some point. Yeah, I think several days survival might actually be easier as we would then potentially have time to build a proper shelter and such.
Love the new intro! So awesome!
Thanks Anna! You have been with us forever! We always appreciate your positive encouragement!
Bro are you serious. I won? Hahahaa. Man god bless you guys. Thank you so much. This is amazing. I woke my wife up to tell her. She thought I won the lottery. How do I get in contact with you to send info?
Lol, oh no! Now I feel like you winning just landed you in the dog house! Go to our home page and you will find the Catchncookca email there.
Catch N Cook California.
I feel stupid writing this I can’t find the email.
@@robertolopez423 I can't find it either, Roberto.
Rory Remenak were u able to find the email?
Yeaauuhhhh!!! Congrats!!
Data is recorded on 4" metal disks with a 1" hole in the center. They are highly polished and very durable. I've given many of them to the Boy Scouts to use for signaling. They are an excellent survival communication device.
The watch is the Hamilton Khaki field watch
Good to see yuh neighbor!
We had to go underground for a bit, but we are back and ready to rock now!
Also be careful with all the bedding near the fire spark burn.
I think that was one reason we all kept waking up on the hour each hour. Totally valid observation!
Yes back with foraging keep nin uploading & keep me from going insane with this stupid dumb quarantine
Thanks for the support. That said, this quarantine is hard on us all but 100% essential. Can't wait to share new vids with you!
100% right! Stupid Dumb Quarantine.
Outdorcheff life next time ..we definitly wait for it
As soon as we can close some social distance.
I almost fell out of my chair! I never win anything! I saw the other winners comment and will.go look for the email. Thanks!
Right on Rory! I may wait to send stuff out to you guys due to the current situation, but rest assured, I will sterilized the points and envelopes before they do get sent.
Rory Remenak hey we’re u able to find the email? Congratulations by the way.
Nope, not yet. Will continue looking today. Same to you, hope your wife understands.
👍👏👌💯🌎😋🤤
Knowing how to use chopsticks helps a lot when there's no utensils
No joke. I remember my parents patiently teaching me as a kid. I think all kids should learn this skill.
@@catchncookcalifornia1574 Yup, in the woods, there's chopsticks everywhere and you can make one easily.
If you will send me a "snail mail" address, I will send you 3 platters.
I will be in touch. But only after Corona passes. I would love to love it a try.
