Rothery is an amazing guitarist. He has a fantastic sense of melody and plays just what the song needs. That’s why his leads are so perfect, each of them fit the song. Very few guitarist are capable of this skill. God bless the Band with many more years. May they never lose the love of music and spreading joy.
that guy around 10 seconds in to this video sums up how much the music this band creates means to some of us. its our history, our soundtrack, our emotions.
Best band you never heard of…. LOL. Marillion has been part of my life for 40 years. Thanks for all the great music to fill those many days. We met Steve and H in Philly many years back, very gracious men. I love H & Fish they both get the job done.
I know some complains complain about how h does the old songs, but I've always appreciated that he doesn't try to just sing them like Fish - he gives them his own touch and distinctiveness. h trying to do Fish wouldn't sound nearly as good as h doing h.
Unfortunately everyone has the bad siding with one over the other. I just started getting my dad onboard with the H era of Marillion and so far he’s actually had a better reaction than in 1989-90 when he saw them. He saw Fish in 87 so obviously it was a weird changing of times but he’s starting to look at H the other way around
Never got along with Hogarth singing the Fish era tracks. Saw Marillion a couple of times with Fish and once with H on the Seasons End tour and while all the new tracks were fine it just didn't work when he started on the old tracks in the second half of the set and after about four tracks we headed for the bar and almost got into a fight with the bands roadies for being fans of the old line up 😂 Fish was on his first solo tour at the same time and I have seen him a few times since but it was a similar experience, Fish was spot on but his band just didn't quite have the magic or edge that Marillion could bring. I was chatting with Janick Gers about it on one occasion and he wrote one of the tracks on Vigil with Fish and had known him for several years at the time and Janick had told Fish when he first spoke about leaving that he was crazy, Marillion had something special that lightning in a bottle moment and he would very possibly never find that again.
Loved this band for more than 40 years now. Saw them for the first time recently and you can feel the connection between band and audience. It really is something special and seeing Mr Rothery live is a life highlight for me.
Marillion have been a constant in my life since 1984. They’ve collectively given me musical joy….. a soundtrack that’s followed the twists & turns of my life….& they still create music that moves me to my core….. they’re a collective musical ‘god send’…. and one for which I’m so very grateful….!!
I agree with You. I love this Band, since 1985 in Ouro Preto City MG Brasil...Always makes Me happy, makes Me cry and to love my momentos!!! Thank You Derik , SH and Cia Ltda...
Hairs on my arms standing up listening to this. I will always hear Fish but Hogarth does a fine job with them. Steve Rothery is 'the voice' of Marillion for me. Such a distinctive sound and so so good.
Tried to listen to this with headphones when I was vacuum the house. Did not go well, difficult to see the dirt when you cry all the time. Thank you ProgZ for this great mix!
I'm a fan of the band since 1984, never made to see them live :( It's NOT my fav band but it's the ONLY band that kept me safe, dark, sensitive, fare, nostalgic, calm...made me a better man. Thank you Marillion, thank you Fish!
I have been a fan since 84 as well and I was lucky enough to see Fish/Marillion 3 times, H/Marillion once and Fish solo 3 times. Every one of those concerts is etched in my brain and I will never forget as long as I live. There were many other before and after but Marillion will always be my Number 1!
as a hardcore DJ it always amazes me when some band catches me with its music so much, that i cant wven skip the songs! i am 23 and i've known Marillion for few years... this year i am gonna grab some tickets, i cant resist, hope i get some
Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. It's a near impossible task to sing lyrics so attached to their creator. The crowd loves it, and H, bless him, lets them do some of the heavy lifting. I personally think he does a great job, and never got caught up in having to choose. I love both versions. But hey, we like what we like. There's no wrong answer to such a subjective thing. And I get to hear Rothers rip some signature lines, so it's win/win for me.
I love Fish and Hogarth. I prefer listening to Fish sing Kayleigh and songs on Childhoods End, as it was his story and I remember his voice singing it initially. Hogarth has stamped his own vocal style on the band since Seasons End. Both great vocalists with different vocal ranges. Enjoy them both since Marillion have continued making great music since Fish left.
The Clutching at Straws material sounded pretty good with H singing. The Misplaced Childhood songs were better with Fish but the H versions are fine. It's really the first two albums where the stylistic difference is so extreme. Fish was a better, more melodic singer on Clutching at Straws than on Script or Fugazi, but most people associate Fish with the verbose, tortured style on those first two albums. H for the most part (wisely) steered clear of those songs.
commendable comment , non of the purist shit either way , both are marillion for me, without fish wouldnt of been a marillion and without H there wouldnt be marillion
@@mattmckeon1688 H really fits on Clutching material. Personally I always liked hearing him sing That Time Of The Night just because of the feeling he puts into it. If I was a lucky bastard they’d play script in Montreal this year! If only… that’s the only other song I could dream on seeing live outside of the other common fish songs.
This band is beyond imagination. Fantastic, I been seeing them and listening to them for decades, Fish and "H" , different but equally terrific. I am a staunch Genesis and Hackett fan but Steve H cannot be this on stage, he is fabulous. Marillion is the ultimate prog - not prog band
Wonderful, brilliant, marvellous. marillion 4 ever ! I ve got the chance to hear „H“ live and of course some fans of marillion say only fish is „the voice“ of marillion but Steve Hogarth is over 30 years the singer of marillion. fish stayed with the band only for the first 7 years. so steve definitly is the voice of marillion. it s a fact that there are some songs written by fish are sounding better with the voice of fish. but steve is a great singer with a special kind of singing and that is for me one reason to hear them over the last 35 years :-). ok it all comes together with the guitar of steve rothery, marks perfect keyboard playing and last but not least the perfect timed drumming of ian. :-)
Fish is and always will be the best, but H is a great lead singer and never tried to outfish Fish and wasnt afraid to sing the songs his own way. Good man

How can anyone not like this? Amazing. The songs speak for themselves and Fish was the originator. However, Steve does a blistering job on each song. He even sounds like Peter Gabriel occasionally how odd?
"H"is an outstanding vocalist. I was never into Marillion (Fish era), until I heard murder Machines. Now, I am playing catch up since "H " joined. All the band are outstanding musicians.
Amazing, I never thought I'd hear these songs song with the passion and vocal range of Fish by Steve Hogarth. I was so wrong , it truly brings tears to my eyes.
This is music, this is history, this is life from its best side! There are not much bands who ever played better songs than Marillion did...and still does😊
He is not Derek. But just so good. I love Fish and him. Always prefer old songs sung by Fish not Hogarth, but new ones ... thank you guys. Just perfect
If you want to listen to the Fish era Marillion- listen to the Steve Rothery Band. I love Hogarth, but he has absolutely different voice and singing manner. It does not suit to Clutching, Script, Fugazi....
Steve Hogart is the voice of Marillion and as a member of the band, he can sing the songs of the Fish era, thanks to him Marillion continued after Fish's abandonment and masterpieces such as Season end, Brave, Marbles arrived... .Kayleigh is a song that I think has the voice of Fish, as well as Lavender, Sugar mice, Incommunicado... and when Hogart sings them, he does it because he is part of Marillion and those are Marillion songs, he does it with the his extraordinary talent and with the utmost respect for those who were there before him. Let's stop with these comparisons once and for all, they are always Marillion, they are always in our hearts.
Just seeing how fans and old band members enjoy the old Marillion Fish era songs makes me wonder, why they cannot always always always play at least half of the live shows these old Marillion songs !!!
Alot better now than it used to be.. He is putting in alot now, when I saw them 20 years ago you could tell he didnt want anything to do with the FISH stuff
When he started with them, H rocked lots of the Fish era songs. Understandable that, after 10 years of building up H era songs they'd want to focus on that. Now they enjoy whatever songs they want to sing.
@@NotThatOneThisOne Yeah I agree, I actually think he just understands the legacy on both sides in equal measure now versus back then all the band hated FISH for probably good reason. Playing his music seemed more a millstone for Hogarth. FISH and the band have put all their ghosts to rest and now they can just enjoy the music...
Sugar Mice at 2mins. I was there and SH was mightily pissed at end. The cut does not showe just how much the crowd took it over, we totally hijacked it.. Not sure where it was but somewhere in London. Not Hammy Odeon tho.

It's unbelievable how the band's members enjoy to play these older songs, it's a pure tribute celebration
yeah Hogarth no feeling in his voice ffs
I don’t think they enjoy it at all, they just know (some) fans like it
