Brockley is home to London's smallest public library.
The name 'Brockley' is derived from the term 'Broca's woodland clearing' which simply means a woodland where a lot of badgers can be seen.
Brockley has a reputation as a focus for the arts. The mid-1960s saw an influx of artists, musicians and alternative types many of whom are the alumni of Camberwell College of Art or Goldsmiths College.
London Bridge is just ten minutes away by train. The recent addition of the Overground line now connects Brockley better than ever to the rest of london.
Most of the Victorian residential buildings in Brockley came about from the Tyrwhitt-Drake family who owned the land and built large homes for the professional classes in the 1840s. After the Second World War, most of the big houses were sub-divided into multiple occupation for the new Caribbean population who found employment in nearby Deptford.
The Grade II listed Rivoli ballroom is regularly sought after as a film set location since its interior is perfectly preserved in its original and glamourous 1950's style to which it was built. It is very near to the Brockley Jack, one of London’s most notable fringe theatres.
Every summer, artists host a thriving Open Studios weekend made up mostly from their own domestic art studios.
Brockley’s largest park is appropriately called Hilly Fields and offers views of the London skyline from Crystal Palace to the O2 Arena. It’s a notable place for outdoor activity in the area in use by schools and clubs. It's also just a nice place to laze about.
Brockley has an award-winning local market every Saturday from 10-2pm with stalls and vans selling fruit, veg and meat and serving ready-to-eat things like burritos, posh fish finger sandwiches or coffee cakes. It’s a good place to soak up the local Brockley vibe.
Thanks for posting.
I was born at 212 Brockley Rd. WAY back in 1948 (in the same house - same room - same bed as my mother).
This was right across the road from the tragic Wickham Gardens V2 attack of March 1945, and I understand my birthplace was severely damaged in that awful explosion (the 2nd last V2 attack of the war).
My family moved to Canada in 1956.
Only ever been back to England once (in 1998).
Tried to get to my birth place, but ran out of time.
SO frustrating - but nice to learn more about my "home town." in this video.
Thanks again.
From the time I was nearly 16 (the latter part of 2003), I lived just a few doors from where you were born.
Lived in Brockley for 20 years now, can't imagine living anywhere else.
Every Brockley resident I speak to is proud of their home. Nice place.
Thank you! My original home - happy family memories.
Rivoli ballroom is in crofton park, which can be considered brockley, but deserves it's own video
What memories this brings back! I moved into 17 Manor Avenue with my family when I was four weeks old, in January 1988 and I remained there until my parents' divorce came through in 2003 at which time, I moved with my Mum and brothers to 224 Brockley Road. To cut a long story short, we remained there until 2010 and now, I live in Devon.
That’s awesome, live in 46 Manor Avenue - Brockley is a great area!! 😊
My beloved ends, lived on breakspears rd and then tressillian rd..my mum recently passed away after living on tressillian rd for 38years..I love Brockley,I may live down here nr Dover but Brockley is where my heart is ❤
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully this offers even a fraction of solace.
We will be visiting London in june and staying in Brockley for 7 days. I'm totaly exited
Thanks dewyne your video s bring back to my mind Sweet childhood memorie s . Cheers
Happy it could do that for you Sergio.
As a young Donegal man, I had just arrived in Crofton Park about a fortnight when Elton John recorded his video for "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" both inside and outside The Rivoli ballroom.
A short time later ( 1983 as well ) Tracey Ullman recorded her video for "Move Over Darling" in the Rivoli also - as well as a short scene on a motorbike & Sidecar outside my flat in Hazeldon Road ).
I had moved back to Ireland by the time Tina Turner filmed her "Private Dancer" video there in '84 though.
The Alpha club (Now called the "Jam Circus") was my local then, run by a fantastic gentleman by the name of Terry.
Occasionally I'd nip up to the Brockley Jack for a few.... Where have all the years gone? sigh!
These images will resonate with you then. Happy to revive the good times.
My dad who was from Ireland would drink in the alpha club and knew Terry very well 😁
Born in lewisham hospital! My old man had an allotment next to the railway in brockley rise where I grew up ( would of loved the allotment s featured) !
There used to be a beavers , Cubs and scout group ( that I attended) run by a lovely couple of Turkish decent who worked at the bus station on Jerningham rd ! Spent lots of time with a mixed bag of kids from West Indian , Turkish , and African decent! Being as the couple worked for the busses they were able to take us all to the seaside , the forests , countryside ( which a lot of us would never have seen!) on the busses ! We went on camps , went to see the lights and all sorts with them! We had too many trips that were highly subsidized by the busses! I remember twice a year we would all go down to the bus station to do some manual labour ( which I now understand ) and we would acquire a couple of badges for!
Times were way better back then!!
I now am 38 years old and live in Chicago but always remember Growing up in Brockley as the happiest days of my life !
First home as a baby was in one of the big old houses 48 and the 88 Brockley cross I think

Check out the Lewisham episode for the answer!
Really nice video ^__^ well done (I saw my house!!)
I'm pretty sure they filmed Legend - the Tom Hardy film - in the Rivolli Ballroom.
yup
And age of ultron
can I ask why you've not done Deptford? you've done every area around it and I have some history if you want it and famous people lived in Deptford, Samuel pepes one of the most famous but lots more in more recent times
Deptford is episode 7. Search UA-cam for the word Deptford and you'll see it. We put the focus on the district as a whole rather than on people.
This is all lewisham!
Yes the borough has quite a few districts inside it.
