Thanks for being here! Structural Salvage is still in Wave 1 access in EPTU but it's expected to hit the live servers in the coming weeks. What are your thoughts on the new features, as well as the change to the Reclaimer Claw?

I understand why players are disappointed in the new claw mechanics but now we know why it's no longer called munching. I would prefer that the claw would eat and chew on the salvage material before it went into the filler stations but knowing how physics is working in this game, it probably would look super weird and you'd likely blow up the process.

I hope they bring back the old claw in final implementations. It'd be nice to see lawful missions pop up right next to stations for cleaning up abandoned ships near pads or left out in front of hangars. SRVs could tow them to a designated salvage box, and the salvagers could take care of it there or right next to the station (so as not to wait on SRVs if they're not around).

I imagine they will go back to an actual munching claw when they integrate Malestrom. It will be awesome if there is a cutting laser of some sort to cut the ship up. Might make it handy to cut a ship in a certain way to make it easy to get out the size 4 and 5 components, say in the engineering space of a Carrack. Otherwise might not be able to get those out. Thanks for the summary! o7

thank you for the video, really nice to see finally some hull munching happening, can't wait to play it in PU!

I cant wait to play the changes, wish they would add some out side box storage like the hull to the vulture,

You know the scrap eating wheels we have now. They could have used the large clamp to grab broken up parts of a ship and feed it into a wheel like that so the middle area of the ship crushes it up and makes boxes that way. I don't really mind if things look perfect because they have given us something to work on and a much better reason to use the ship now. Every step they take towards making multi crew gameplay more viable I am happy about. Ships like the Reclaimer should punish you quite a bit for trying to solo it. Can't wait for engineering to come into the game as long as its done in a way that makes it fun and rewarding.

I really want that grinding room to be functional. There's an engineering panel right there for someone to sort through the debris and plug things into the right sorting bins.

Unfortunately this will end up continuing to be my go to relaxing loop. Mining is just too ridiculous right now with the massive rocks that are unbreakable as a solo. It takes way too much time to find any rock with even higher end T2 materials that a prospector can break. Hopefully they can get the ROC sorted out soon at least.

Yea, they kinda over engineered mining to the point it’s a bit unrealistic in terms of what a mining laser can do. Time and sustained heat is a powerful combo and I don’t think that’s adequately captured in the current gameplay. Prospector should be an able to do much more basically, albeit slower that its big brothers.

I had heard that the munching may or may not be in the next release. I guess there wasn't a 'go / no go' decision made at that time. Has that changed? I am looking forward to munching hulls and getting my vulture to be profitable again. I tried mining the other day, and it was taking too much time to find anything my prospector could crack. After about an hour I think I ended up with about 4 SCU of raw Beryl. Not even worth it. I am probably mining wrong. LOL

Munching is being renamed to Structural Salvage, and definitely expected in 3.22! The patch notes from this afternoon look like they're going to be adding more waves of testers to the EPTU build.

@@RedMonsterSC that sounds awesome. I will probably get a reclaimer, too. I am looking forward to salvaging full ships

I like the new claw. I don't think people who want the old claw realize how physics works. It's more an allure than an educated choice for them. People critically call it "beam citizen" but they forget what year it is in game I guess... Then even worse, others say it's unrealistic, lol.... Again, they're not educated... Just seeing tunnel vision on a claw grabbing something. Nevermind what wreckage it hits while trying to get a hold of a specific item... Nevermind the chain reaction of debris slamming into other debris, spreading parts out everywhere. I've no doubt they'll fine tune things from here. Out with the old claw, in with the new... It works.

they call it beam citizen because people want deeper hands on interactions in the mechanics rather than the numbers. The lore is irrelevant and more to do with gameplay. Its mechanical depth that people want. For example, mining is a point, click and hold to keep it in the green zone. Most of its complexity lies in everything else that isn't within the player's actions such as pricing, values, location, materials, etc.
I fully expect mining mega rocks with the orion to be more complex. Requiring orgs with argo rafts and drones to move broken pieces. Scanning and isolating specific areas with high concentrations of ore. Having more dynamism to the cracking of the rocks. Rather than the orion just having a bigger laser with the same old mining mechanic. That is great for the smaller asteroids.
as for the term "beam citizen", so long as CIG continues to remind everyone and show progress away from beams and into the next stage of these gameplay loops; that this isn't going to be beam citizen. Then all is good. Beams are useful at tier 0 because they are so versatile and a lot of these mechanics play into each other so they need to be tested. Right now, CIG is justifying using them as not wanting to spend unnecessary resources making new mechanics when they want to figure out the fundamentals. This is valid but will only last so long which brings me back to the beginning of this paragraph. "so long as they remind everyone and show progress away from beams in the next stages of these gameplay loops, we will be fine".

@LloydLong have you jumped a ship into space? Have you fired a laser beam? Have you EVA'd in a small space suit??? No? K......
With a tractor beam, they simply need different forms and strengths. Similar to Soundwaves... Wide or narrow.
Wide beams hold the entire ship together or at least a portion if you're in a Vulture, and narrow, stronger beams pull debris out and into the maw. The narrow beam being stronger, simply yanks targeted debris from the pull of the other beam.......Think gravity with planets and stars...
Without tractor beams, you're going to have a hard time. So you can call it beam citizen but what you should be saying is it's common sense. Your huge physical claw won't have nearly the accuracy that tractor beams and lasers will have. You see tunnel vision on "the rule of cool" but completely toss out the "rule of common sense"...... It is sad. Just because you want it doesn't mean it's good for you. There are many places you can go right now that have zero-G simulations... If you could go there and scatter small objects around, then use a claw type device to pick them up without bumping anything else, you might get an understand of what happens when you push something in space. Again, the claw by itself is useless. The claw with a tractor beam is inefficient. Two separate tractor beam types working together is optimal. You don't have to believe me. This Friday ISC will be up and talking about salvage. I'm confident they will educate all of you on the pro's and con's of a claw, or rhe idea of a claw now... I'll see you back here friday to discuss. 🙃
