Bard bantams might be nice but not all of them are some Bantam breeds can be quite mean bantams is not the way to go for kids bantams can be quite vicious some breeds most breeds The Roosters can be mean
You are very correct! Some Bantams are mean based on breed type, personal temperament, and how they have been handled. Just like you could get a golden retriever that would be a great family pet or one that would rip your hand off…I appreciate your comment and I hope it helps people make informed decisions about bantams :) Also “Barred Bantams” indicates their color and not the breed and would be no indication of temperament. :) I also cannot promise that all Plymouth Rock Bantams out there are nice…hope this clarifies what I said in the video!
I have 18 or more old english bantam roosters and not a single one of them are aggressive. Some are more social than others but 0 aggression. The man I bought half of my roosters from has ofcourse the same breed but he is not as hands on when caring for them and his are all pretty territorial. Think it's mostly about the manner in which you interact and how much you interact. Only aggressive rooster I have is a massive full size black cochin which are traditionally docile birds. I pick him up and pet him like a kitten and he avoids me for the next month or so until he gets bold again 🤣
This is certainly information to consider. I have been waiting for the opportunity to get some chickens. Not really thought to look into the bantams. Thanks for taking the time to throw the idea out there. Jesus bless.
Thank you for the comment! I should take this opportunity to say that not all bantam breeds are friendly and easily handled. For example, Gamefowl are known for being a little crazy. Just research the specific breed and make sure to spend time with them! ☺️
I have 4 bantams and one rooster and I love them with all my heart ... my rooster is such a little love he sleeps on my lap and follows me all over... they are very social
Love those little Banties. Seems like most people had some running around in their yards when I was growing up. It was like Easter all the time hunting down their nests and finding piles of eggs. lol
We have 3 Bantams, they are so sweet and they do allow us to pick them uo. They are my husbands new love. They hear his voice and start calling him to come over to pick them up.
We had a friend had a passion for raising Bantams, a converted dairy barn, pens, cages, runs all to keep them separated/pure. We became friends, traded, and yes, the eggs are small, but for me it's about scratching for bugs in the food forest. I've been a fan of Black Australorp hens, they are smaller, average size eggs, lite feed consumers, and very, very docile. Back to Bantams, my favorite is the Silver Speckled Hamburgs, very alert, very shy though, as we have hawks, falcons, I've had both full size and bantam, and they are the 1st alarm bell that goes off.
Thank you for your video. We just started out with raising chickens and creating a "Backyard Chicken" environment. Within our first 14 chicks "now 5 and 7 months old" we have two small Bantams. They are both smaller than what you are showing in your video and are very sweet. As a joke my wife calls them her "Therapy Chickens"... We enjoy our time with them. We'll have to look at your other videos.
Yes it was! The man that gave them to us was once the man who decided what the standards (standards of perfection) were for Plymouth Rock Bantams. Which means these really are some of the best! Can’t wait to see how they do at the Fort Worth Stock Show 😁
@@kingcrossfarms4979 I hope they take top prize, giving you a confirmed award-winning breeding stock to keep at the farm! Thanks for your reply and BEST of luck at the show!🤞
I have had bantams and they are not so gentle like you say. The rooster was mean he would try to attach you every time you went in the pen . For no reason. Hens on the other hand very gentle. I couldn’t believe the difference between the rooster and the hens temperament .
You are very correct! I should have put it in the video that not all are nice! Gamefowl for example are known for being mean although you can get a sweet one. There are certain breeds of bantam that are mean and even the “nice” breeds you can get a mean one. Thank you for this comment and I hope people read it!
The just have ego issues. Little man syndrome. Some of them have something to prove 🤣 I had a bantam you measure in grams trying to fight my 10lb cochin. They are bold but bond easily to people from my experience
I purchased 9 bantam chicks last month. Of course i didn’t know much about them at the time so now I’m looking for info on clipping their flight feathers. My chickens are free-range so i don’t want to find them on the street or in the neighbors’ trees.
I have bantams and standards. Like'em both. I am considering phasing out the standards. They seem to lay longer than the standards. Like the standards some roosters are nasty but most that I have had aren't plus they don't hurt as much when they do get you.
Hello there, how are you doing? I am from London , I have question about bantams . Are bantams broody? I don’t want any chicks as we want to have them as a pet for my kids. (4-6 bantams) Many thanks
I have never had one of our Plymouth Rock bantams go broody but there are endless breeds of bantams :) some would be prone to going broody. All you have to do is make sure to collect the eggs. It takes more than 20 days to hatch a chick, so if you just collect the eggs you will not have chicks! Hope you all enjoy your pet chickens! 🥰
Old English is the breed, barred is the color of the chicken, and bantam means that the chicken is mini. :) I have Plymouth Rock (the breed), barred (the color), bantams (small) chickens. Hope this helps!
@@kingcrossfarms4979 Thanks. It helps. I'm guessing the two would look very similar. But the OE Bantam Barred would be more slender while the Bantam Barred Rock would be a plumper Bantam that lays brown eggs? Chicks would be almost indistinguishable?
@@duckmanjoel They actually both lay cream colored eggs. :) The Plymouth Rock roosters would definitely be a little bigger and have a very distinct body shape. But the hens and chicks would be almost impossible to tell apart from one breed to the other.
I love my silkies, satins, and showgirls but hate how my novogens have to continuously reinstate their pecking order with the smaller hens and I can't stand the bullying but we make it work. 😅
I had 2 bantam roosters and a hen given to me, they are cool as shit, they free range and the roosters roost on the roof at night and the hen disappeared and shows up about every other day, she is sitting on eggs somewhere I'm the woods out back I can't wait for the baby chicks to show up, and ya I got a 40 lb bag of food 2 months ago and there's still more than 1/2 of it left. The roosters crow funny also lol
I don’t ask that much but I have definitely paid more than $50 a bird for rare or show quality bantams. I reached out to a guy who’s day old bantam buff Cochins were $60 per chick plus shipping 😂 I politely declined.
@@peterneufeld6828 You could but almost any other chicken would provide more meat. But the flavor and process would be basically the same as any other chicken.
Yeah I went back and watched this video the other day…it’s horrible! The sound quality, the rambling, how many times I say “um” 😂 I’m not perfect but much better now.
As an animal lover, I was uncomfortable watching a video where these beautiful birds were talked about as something that exists only to be exploited. Every animal, no matter how big, wants to live in a large space. Those who are unable to do so should not keep animals. Of course, such messages cannot reach those people who are not able to see the intangible value in living beings, but there are also those who can be induced to think more deeply.
I agree with what you are saying:) I’ll admit farm animals are almost always kept with a purpose in mind, but I care for them just like I do my dogs who are spoiled rotten. I feed them high quality food and snacks and if they are sick I’ll rush them to the vet and provide whatever care is suggested ❤️ I hope this video does not encourage anyone to buy chickens and cram them into a tiny space. We keep trios in 50 square feet. I would free range them but they would get eaten by the predators in our area. I hope my videos encourage people to truly care for all their animals and not exploit them 🥰
