I've owned a JR S201 which looks identical but with 35w/ch. I handed it off to a friend and he's delighted with it. The sound is distinctive. Vey clear, punch and slightly analytical but with sold powerful bass. The FM tuner is sensitive and one of the best I heard. The appearance is a matter of taste. People either love it or hate it. It is a huge receiver so you need a big shelf.
Very nice and informative video. I have a 501 and a 401 and quite frankly they both sound dynamite, I cannot tell the difference in sound on my Klipsh speakers. These are up there in quality with Pioneer, Sansui and Marantz. They sell for less because people don't like receivers without knobs it seems but that is why I think they are so neat. Mine are 36 years old and still kick ass. It beats any printed circuit shit made in China today and will be around long after I am dead.
MR. Gentleman Sir Fine comment. I will most likely be the same after my JR-S401 and Wharfedale 310 speakers give up. I love my set up, have had it from around the age of 20, almost 30 years ago.Along with Pioneer turntable and CD, sound and quality are both excellent. Can I do better? I don't care part of my life! And loud, always has been.
Mr. Gentleman Sir: Niced nick. More like 40 years old. They made them in 78, 79. By 82, 83 they were transitioning to cheaper materials and cheaper manufacturing. Nit picking, sure, but I'm absolutely nuts about the rock solid gear of the 70s.
I have one of these, and I don't quite think the quality is up there with Pioneer of the same time period. I do admire their innovative styling, but in my opinion, their build quality isn't in the same league as what Pioneer was putting out at the time. For example, they used really cheap slider knobs and plastic side panels. But you know what they say about opinions.
The lamps are 8 volt 250 milliamp. You can get the bi-pin bulbs that fit many pioneers (slip into the sockets), lift the wires out straight, solder to them, and put the bulbs back into the green/blue rubber holders. The lamps are NOT hard to find, and they are NOT green. The filter on the inside is green.
I bought a 501 in 1978 when I was in Zaragoza, Spain. I also bought a pair of JBL L-110 speakers. I loved it. The 120 wpc was perfect for the JBLs. I left Spain in 1980 for Korea and I took the 401 with me. Like an idiot, I sold it there. Story of my life. I find and buy fantastic hifi gear then sell it.
last year I could buy a mint 601 for only 75 euro, 100 km away...I was lazy and already full with other stuff.....I still regret it when I think about it
vintage stereo You're probably thinking of the JR-S600, which was the top model of the previous JVC receiver line. The 600 also put out 120 wpc. I think the X01 line was better looking, though, with the slanted shelf on the facia.
I'm pushing a set of 1970s KLH Legend floor speakers (12"W 4"M 2"T) with my S401. When the "new" digital CD recordings of music came out and were supposed to "reproduce" music so we'd hear it better I felt cheated, it sounded and sounds bland still to this day. I'm 56 years old and grew up on vinyl and early Hi-Fi and by the late 60s I started buying components and assembling personal home stereo systems for myself then family and friends. (I was first person anyone knew who had an EQ) While 99% moved on and have purchased many many many new systems I still have the last receiver and speakers I bought, my S401 & KLH speakers. (I also have mountains of their retired audio components like Marantz, Pioneer, Polk Audio, JVC, Altec Lansing, Sony, etc.they were going to toss away or sell.) I haven't bought any new stereo components in 36 years and refuse too nor have we purchased a surround sound system.
I have a jvc ja-s31 and it sounds a powerful bass. I made one amplifier made like jvc ja-31 and I connect speakers wharfedale D 320. I have 2 videos of that amplifier on UA-cam
Hey Vintage Stereo I own the same exact JVC s401 and was just wondering where can i get my hands on some new internal replacement fuses? Yeah all 3 of the fuses blew out on me, any info on getting my hands on some would be great. I miss hearing the beautiful quality sound that it produces!
I sold my unit to a collector, so I told him if he wants he can come to me with it , i will change the lamps and paint them green, i wonder how it looks when all the lamps are burning.
@@SinnerSince1962 @Bryan Dover hello, thanks for reminding me of this seven year old comment, I still have and use this same amplifier! Do you have one too?
@@SinnerSince1962 no need to apologise Bryan. You seem to know a thing or two about these amps so id like to ask, how do you reccomend taking care of them? Like what sort of general maintenance can one do for it. I ask because mine could do with some tlc.
@@ez4845 I would recommend having the Power Supply recapped and checking the zero balance and idle currents. Other than that, they are pretty bullet-proof. These are nice and wide, which makes servicing much easier!
social democrat. the word leftist is often used by right wingers who really have no clue at all what they are talking about. Some even think that everything what is left from the middle is communist....I think it's a lack of good education why so many people still use the word leftist.
Leftists, actually collectivists, are sending USA toward civil war. USA conceived on the concept of individual rights. Europe? Socialism looked real good after WWII because USA picked up all the heavy expense like defense, allowing European countries to fund stuff like health care. Europe going broke just like the USA.

The subsonic filter is to keep very low frequencies from a turntable from hitting your speakers. It cuts off anything below 20HZ.
Congratulations for this great video..I am ready to buy some similar device...the JRS-300..thanks!

Someone local had a 600 MarkII for $150. Smelled like smoke. I missed it. Nice looking unit.

oops. 401. They didn't make a 501. Not for overseas US bases, anyway.
I have jr-s600 😎 IT is amazing 🤯

The subsonic filter is the same as the low filter. To reduce low bass and avoid trouble with the turntable.
But, DeOxit Fader Lube is perfect for sliders, something you should have mentioned...
Потрясающий аппарат!!!👍
How does the 501 sounds? Which speakers you have on them?
I used deoxit on sliders with success.. Can you please tell me why NOT to use deoxit on sliders?
You should use Faderlube. It has a lubricant in it whereas the Deoxit D5 does not.
Deoxit 5 with the red print is not suitable for pots, it does corrode the carbon track in pots after a short time.
I have a jvc ja-s31 and it sounds a powerful bass. I made one amplifier made like jvc ja-31 and I connect speakers wharfedale D 320. I have 2 videos of that amplifier on UA-cam

The question would be, WHY did they blow? Fuses don't blow on their own.
The original lamps are not for sale anymore. but i have green lamp paint now
You don't need green lamp paint. The bulbs are clear. They slip into a rubberized filter giving the appearance that they are green.
I don't THINK it has 80 thousands micro farrad , mate!!!
I sold my unit to a collector, so I told him if he wants he can come to me with it , i will change the lamps and paint them green, i wonder how it looks when all the lamps are burning.
Again, the lamps ARE NOT GREEN. They are clear.
all the lights on mine are working though on my tuner scale the lights are green
As they should be.
