I would be surprised if there was nothing to set up the incoming movie. The last episode could do that. Ralph Macchio said in the original announcement that it was in a different Universe which could indicate that they will not mention it however it would be a lost opportunity if they did not do something to generate some hype about the film.
Miyagi's son and wife were both killed long ago, we know this from the first Karate kid movies with him and dany boy and there was only 1 other woman in Miyagi life and they never had kids and never got married, so hong is not the son of Miyagi kim sun yug ya he is likey a long lost brother that is possible expecially the age gap and how kim is still alive at 109 years old is nut but that makes Miyagi in very late 90s when he passed so makes some sence for sure so that means that Miyagi did not commet the crime which also makes sence that it was kim Miyagi older brother but why was kim never once mentioned in any KK Movies who knows other then surprise for the future
