pre-keto jay is a sight to behold
This is the best analysis I've found. I've read all the surface level deconstructions about what "literally" happened (i.e. the tangent universe, living receiver, etc.). This breaks the film down at a thematic level, which, to me, is infinitely more interesting. Grow up man, if it isn't what you came here for then go find one of the thousand other Donnie Darko analyses.

I thought this was a very interesting way to look at the film. I thought it was particularly interesting how you related the gram green metaphor to Donnies actual world because Donnie is the cause of the tangent universe by killing frank which gets him out of the room before the airplane part hits his house, therefore creating this universe but also destroying it. Great Analysis. I didnt even think about the mascot, and thank you for better explaining the eye picture and how it relates exactly.

I believe the shape of Frank's head is a time travel map. It also has ties with Matt Groening's "Life in Hell".

you might have mentioned this in your article but you were saying that he is a kind of dark hero and it a mix inbetween good and bad. Having good intentions but performing bad acts it kind of goes back to the name of the town middlesex because he is in the middle of good and bad. Might be possible.

So basically the movie is about true love and how he chooses to save the only person he ever loved instead of Choosing his other path ..so he does believe in destiny and a possibility of a higher power power
Either he dies or he ends up in jail or an asylum with his girlfriend, Frank, his mother and his kid sister dead. I still don't understand why it is Frank showing him the future, or what happens to the jet engine in the future (because the engine still falls through the wormhole) , presumably the jet crashes? Are his mother and sister on board? As for destiny Frank says to him "I can do anything I want, and so can you". Which means there is no destiny. Yet that is contradicted by FRanks etc
I just watched Donnie Darko for the first time since about 2004 and came straight here afterwards knowing you'd have something interesting to say about it. At least, I think that's you...

I think this film is about abortion.his life is just a dream has having in the womb.theres all these bad things waiting for him on the outside fear,child molesters and death which is stalking him.his mother has him aborted at the end.

Maybe there's another element here, Donnie is on drugs and he is hallucinating, maybe Donnie is a Monarch mind control victim and Frank acts as his handler, and with suggestion he gets Donnie to burn down the house of the child molester. Which would be another twist on how he's destroying and also helping, then he eventually shoots Frank, his handler. It's typical of these mind control slaves to act out some fantasy reality situation instead of dealing with what's happening to them. A lot of fantasy movies a lot of the time are to do with the protagonist's psyche.

Yeah, but have you seen the sequel; 'S. Darko'? Awful. Just, awful. 1/10. Would not recommend.
