- Jesus of Nazareth is a 1977 British-Italian television miniseries directed by Franco Zeffirelli and co-written by Zeffirelli, Anthony Burgess, and Suso Cecchi d'Amico which dramatises the birth, life, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.
The storyline of Jesus of Nazareth is a kind of cinematic Diatessaron, or "Gospel harmony", blending the narratives of all four New Testament accounts. It takes a fairly naturalistic approach, de-emphasising special effects when miracles are depicted and presenting Jesus as more or less evenly divine and human. The familiar Christian episodes are presented chronologically: the betrothal, and later marriage, of Mary and Joseph; the Annunciation; the Visitation; the circumcision of John the Baptist; the Nativity of Jesus; the visit of the Magi; the circumcision of Jesus; the Census of Quirinius; the flight into Egypt and Slaughter of the Innocents; the Finding in the Temple; the Baptism of Jesus; the woman caught in adultery; Jesus helping Peter catch the fish; the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15: 11-32); a dialogue between Jesus and Barabbas (non-biblical); Matthew's dinner party; the Sermon on the Mount; debating with Joseph of Arimathea; the curing of the blind man at the pool; the Raising of Lazarus (John 11:43); the Feeding of the Five Thousand; the Entry into Jerusalem; Jesus and the money changers; dialogue with Nicodemus; the Last Supper; the betrayal of Jesus by Judas; Peter denying Christ and repenting of it; the judgment of Jesus by Pilate ; the Johannine Passion Narrative (John 18-19; including the Agony in the Garden); the Carrying of the Cross; the Crucifixion of Christ (Laurence Olivier's Nicodemus recites the "Suffering Servant" passage [Isaiah 53:3-5] as he looks helplessly on the crucified Messiah); the discovery of the empty tomb; and an appearance of the Risen Christ to his Disciples. I watched this movie as an unbeliever 40 years ago...I'm celebrating 41 years of walking with the Lord and still this is my favorite movie about Jesus.

You changed your life. There is no jesus. It is just a made up story. There were around 16 other jesus like figures before the christian jesus. They also healed the sick, were born of a virgin, claimed to be the son of god, died and rose 3 days later and on and on. Just a cut and paste story.

This is STILL the best Jesus movie ever made IMO. I'm 60 years old and I grew up with it ..watched every year on mainstream network...then sometime in my late 20s all the great Christian movies were banished from regular TV along with the morals of society. Olivia Hussey went on to a successful career to this day...playing Mother Therese even. And several Murder She Wrotes....in any case THAT MUSIC..that SCORE has never been beat. Ever. It's the most emotionally engaging movie about it ever done. As a teenager I was in tears. Yes the Passion of the Christ focused on the realism of the Crucifixion...but for the whole narrative ill always love what this cast and crew gave us in the 70s with no tech. It still stands. My fondest memory growing up watching at Easter time...along with ten Commandments and The Robe

Which jesus? There were about 16 christ like figures who were on this earth long before your jesus came along. The absolute best movie of all time about our savior. I remember this played on tv every year during Easter in the 70’s and 80’s. I have watched it dozens of times throughout the years and always come back to it during Christmas. ❤ ✝️

This is a “one of a kind “ type of movie. It doesn’t matter how many time I’ve watched it, it brings joy to my soul and refreshes my intimacy with my creator. It helps me to recharge my batteries once again.
King Jesus has been with me through thick and thin , throughout my life. I learned that our Lord Jesus will never give you something you cannot carry, even though at first when you look at the task, you wonder how you could possibly handle such a huge problem but he is there with you to guide you every step of the way. I love him dear. He brings tears to my eyes sometimes when I reflect back on things.

Of course, it’s like reading the New Testament. It’s great to have it in a movie. You know when you read the bible and this voice tells you not to read it. With the movie, you don’t get that evil spirit tryptophan deflect you.

I’m a millennial in my 30’s, still a singleton and let me tell you , my generation and gen z’s are going down hill in society.
In saying that, Their is plenty of hope. I just look around and worry
I was 12 years old when my parents took me to see the movie in cinema, The cinema was overflowing, people sat right in front of the screen and filled the aisles, there was not even a single tiny space open. I saw it with my best friend we cried from beginning to end, right through all three intervals. Later that year, on a church camp, we were both reborn on a hill overlooking Heidelberg. I remember laughing non stop for almost two hours and running around like a racehorse on speed at the same time it was wonderful. This movie showed me, as a child, how real Jesus really is and that every word He taught is like the biggest treasure the world has ever seen. That, along with my wonderful mom and dad who taught me about Him from a tiny babe, i thank Him every day for loving me despite my sins and shortcomings. Jesus is EVERYTHING!!!!

Wouldn't it be greater to lay it down for your enemies? Why are so many Christians so hateful? So-called "pro-lifers" who care nothing if women die. There are women in the USA now, suffering agony because they have terrible infections caused by foetuses that have actually died, are rotting, but there's still a few cells pulsing, so that's a "heartbeat" even though it is not, so doctors have been told they must wait until the woman is actually dying before they can remove it. Barbaric, inhumane... Jesus will see to all those people

I don’t watch movies more than once. But I can’t count the times I have re watched this masterpiece. It is one of best movies about Our Lord Ever. Thank you Franco Zeffirelli for doing this. May you rest in peace.
My favourite movie portrayal of Jesus. Growing up, my mother loved this version the best, so it was seen in our home often after it's release. When my father passed, she bought a BETAMAX player, and this, as well as The Robe and The 10 Commandments, were purchased for her random viewing pleasure. Movies for home use were very expensive back then. Decades later, I wish I could ask her why, even though we weren't a church going family, she had such a fixation on these iconic, and very religious, films. Sadly she passed in 1997. I feel the heart of Jesus in this film. I could not watch the beatings prior to crusifiction....I had to close my eyes and turn the volume down. Truly a beautiful film.

Bible contains parts of the earlier books. The Quran is the last book, from the same God. It’s not a different God. It’s the Almighty God. So why do you have different religions today? It’s because people sometimes change the message. Sometimes they lost the message. Sometimes out of excessive love.

I say to them : “God loves Jesus”, and they can’t answer that. If they agree with me, then Islam is true, Jesus is not God. If they disagree then huh? God doesn’t loves Jesus? They said Jesus is not only the son of God, but actually God himself. Doesn’t make sense. It’s totally illogical and it’s totally inconsistent with the Bible. That certainly is inconsistent with the teachings of Jesus in the Bible. It might be consistent with St. Paul in the Bible, but not consistent with Jesus in the Bible. The trinity that Christianity believe in, is not consistent with Jesus in the Bible. Yes it’s consistent with St. Paul in the Bible, in his letters to the Romans, Colossians, Cointhians, Galatians etc. Yes it’s consistent to St. Paul, but not consistent with Jesus in the Bible. So if you follow Jesus, (dont follow St. Paul), if you follow Jesus, would you be a Christian? Would you end up being a Christian? I’m sorry you wouldn’t. If you follow ONLY Jesus in the bible, you’d end up being a Muslim. Because firstly you wouldn’t believe in the Trinity. Jesus didn’t say Trinity. There is no word ‘trinity’ in the Bible. In fact there is the word trinity in the Quran, because in the Quran God says: Don’t say trinity. God is one. In the Bible there is no word trinity. Christianity teaches Jesus died for our sins. Jesus didn’t say this. In fact, he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane to be saved from crucifixion, and when the Romans came to kill him, his followers tried to save Jesus. Whereas, they should have said to him “ Jesus please hurry up and die. The quicker you die, the quicker we have salvation”. Because every man wants salvation. And if Jesus come to die for our sins that is genuine and is true, you would say to him, “look i’m sorry yes it is painfull for you Jesus I agree your doing a great thing you are a great guy. But please hurry up and die”. You definitely don’t want to save him. But the disciples was trying to save him, and Jesus went hiding. And he’s praying to be saved doesn’t make sense. He would have said : “I am God pray to me. I am part of a trinity”. But he doesn’t say that. In fact he didn’t even allow people to call him good. Luke : 18:18 “Good teacher, what must I do inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered : “Why do you call me good?“No one is Good except God alone”.
He didn’t allow people to call him good, and today Christianity saying Jesus is God. It doesn’t make sense.

This was the best movie that was ever made about The Lord Jesus Christ. There have been many others but there is something phenomenally special about this film that really grasps the significance of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
I fully agree. I was 7yrs old when I saw this film and didn't know the real significance of it back then, but what I do know is I felt the pain of what Jesus had to go through particularly the grim flogging scenes and his crucifixion. I cried and cried, and as I got older this film has stayed with me and I'm now in my 50's. The whole film is enchantingly real.
Lots of people died horrible deaths for others. Anyway the jesus story is a farce. Lots of jesus like characters that were here long before the christian jesus showed up. They also healed the sick, claimed to be the son of god, were born of a virgin, died and rose again 3 days later and on and on. Just a cut and paste mythology story.

Im a 54 year old Brit, I love this program. It brings back memories of my childhood watching it every Easter at my grandparents' home. I am, however, a complete and committed non-believer. It doesn't stop me from enjoying the stories, but to me, that's all they are, stories. But, when you hear the 'words' of Jesus, spoken on TV, it's Robert Powell's magnificent voice I hear in my head.
I'm a 60 year old Brit. I would imagine that most people were at one time non believers, I was. But God wants a personal relationship with you. Just find a quiet place with no distractions and simply ask God to reveal himself to you, he will, but with everyone it's in a different way. I find if you take just one step towards God He runs a mile towards you. Peace and blessings, the hour is now very late.

@@srichey444 2 years ago in our church i was covering up our music equipment, my foot got wrapped up in a cover used to covered up the music equipment I tripped, hit my head on a marble slab, hit my shoulder and blow my knee out after x-rays in the hospital I had told the muscle off the bone stretch my ligament make up my rotator cuff and sewed my knee up with no anesthesia Jesus took all my pain away after the surgery. I came back in two weeks, x-rayed again, and the doctor couldn’t believe my muscle had done reattached it self took a bone tendon was healed, and my shoulder is almost healed up, every time I tell my story, I glorify the Lord

Of all the Movies about Jesus, this was always a favorite, now The Chosen is coming in a close 2nd so far, but this really touched my soul as a teenager when I first saw it as a newly saved soul.. This is the best Christian theater I’ve ever seen. The characters are both inspirational and believable, to include Jesus Himself. Zeferrelli was a genius, and he brought out the genius in his teammates in the making of this film.

IMHO this is most moving portrayal of Jesus Christ I have ever seen. It touches my heart like no other. It is a masterpiece and with Robert Powell as Jesus it is absolutely magnificent. This is my favorite movie of all time. I never tire of watching it. I am always moved and feel closer to God and His Holy Son Jesus Christ as I watch it.
