  • Brazilian Jiujitsu in Japan. What Training BJJ in Japan is Like.
Have you been to or do you want to visit Japan and train/compete in Japan?
In this video, I talked about what training BJJ in Japan is like with the footage of my special class at the academy called Toyatt Jiujitsu.
    Check it out!

"TODAY IS THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE"
    Hello,
Thank you for watching this video.
    My name is Kazuki Umemura.
I am a BJJ black belt training in Tokyo in Japan.
To introduce myself, I left my full time job to start helping BJJ practitioners, especially for 40+, to safely become more proficient at BJJ and "FEEL ALIVE."
This UA-cam channel is for any BJJ practitioners at any age although I will upload a lot of videos for older practitioners as well as the ones for practitioners at any age.
Also, I created a FB group where any BJJ practitioners 40 years old and over can come together and improve together. Because the group is new, we don't have many people in the group, so if you can join it and let us know how to make the group better/more engaging, that will be appreciated.
    Thank you!

I received my black belt from Marcelo Alonso, 6th degree black belt under Master Carlson Gracie.
I was born in Japan, and when I was 18 years old, I studied abroad in the U.S. to train BJJ and get a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Washington.
Over the course of my BJJ journey, I have gained substantial experience competing and teaching BJJ in both Japan and the U.S.
I am strongly passionate about improving the quality of others' lives, especially 40+ year olds, through teaching BJJ. My motto is "Today is the youngest you'll ever be."

Great video. I think hobbies in general, not just BJJ, will grow in Japan once the work culture changes. If most people start leaving work by 5pm, the whole society will see an uplift in hobbies.

Thank you. Oh for sure! You can't have a hobby when you work from 9 am to 10 pm especially if they have a family too.
It's mostly inefficient work system inside orgs.

This is really interesting! I grew up watching things like Pride Fighting, Kurosawa films, the Last Samurai etc... I think the perception is that Japan is really into the Budo lifestyle. This is fascinating to see. Please post more about Japanese culture. Super interesting.

That's true. (Last Samurai is one of the best for sure!) I think that used to be.
Ok I definitely will talk more about Japan! Oss

I'll be going to Japan soon for Kyokushin karate, but would like to keep up with my BJJ. This video series would be helpful. Interesting that you say Osu like we do in karate.

I'm over 40 and started BJJ four months ago. It has been a wild four months, and sadly I do not use Facebook to join your group. I am planning a long term trip (30+ days) to the Kyoto area, and look forward to finding training situations like this. Seems things are doing well for you, if you rebranded from Kazuki's to Tokyo bjj club.

Seattle native here, been training for a bit over two years and visiting Japan in April. Considering bringing a gi with me to maybe do some training while I'm there, but I'm curious what the drop-in culture is like. The late class times might be an issue but could be worth it I think.

Advice on where I can visit a class or open mat? I’m staying in Tokyo, Iitabashi area, end of June to mid h July 2024. Im also coming from Seattle, Marcelo Alonso student. I’d love to drop into an open mat at least once. Thank you!

  • @MrFuzzfactor

Hey thanks for this discovery! Random question: what are the green mats for? To avoid filming people who don’t want to be on camera? Have a nice day 👍

    • @tokyojiujitsuclub
      @tokyojiujitsuclub  2 роки тому

Thank you for the comment! It's for preventing people from bumping each other while rolling. People who are not rolling grab a mat for the safety. I think it's pretty common in dojos in Japan because they are kind of small!

Yeah, it's really not as big as people outside Japan think nowadays. However, Judo is a big culture in Japan. Lots of people do it and everyone has to practice it in PE class in high school.

I've also heard that the Okinawan Karate is not as popular among Okinawans anymore. Very sad situation for the Japanese martial arts.

That's the guideline the Japanese gov decided, so BJJ academies have to follow the rule to keep the business going
