I love small towns like this. They always have so much character left. The town has so much history.
I live in cripple creek and I've lived here for 4 or 5 years and i see the donkeys alot and i walk town alot too

The town has a Wild West atmosphere to it, with the old buildings. Quiet but pristine.
Oatman Arizona has the donkeys also was brought out to pack out the gold . Really touristy there and something new to do every day .

Adorable donkeys. Burros and donkeys are the same, just different names used. Like in Oatman, the burros roam in the town. These here were very tame. Probably better they don't stay on the regular traffic streets to avoid being hit by a vehicle. Thanks for showing the little ones.

Donkeys are so cute. That is one of my regrets, having not had a donkey as a pet in my life so far. I would definitely want to go there just to see the donkeys.

My first trip, was in the 60's.
A neat place.
I loved your interaction with those burrows and the pure look of joy on your face. I could tell you love animals and petting them made you happy. It made me smile too as I am an animal lover. I laughed as you tried to entice them with your rag weed. They were like, "are you kidding me"? They would have jumped into your camper with you if you had shared some sugar with them or apple slices.
I’ve been to Cripple Creek many times. You should take the train that they still have running or go to the Moly Catherine Gold Mine. You also missed the old Jail.
The Molly Kathlene is a great mine to tour.

What wonderful memories. I'm 62 and from Ohio. We have family living in Colorado. Our parents took us 3 kids out there on vacations starting in the late sixties for most of our summer vacations.
Cripple Creek was one of the places we explored. We also to 4 wheel drive into the mountains on old mining trails.
Actually found the gold mine that belonged to Unsinkable Molly Brown. It was way back in the mountains. Those switch back turns were definitely interesting. You had to back up with the back of your vehicle hanging over the edge to make the turn. Fun, scary times.
My sister,her,husband and her in laws did most of the restorative facing work at Cripple Creek back in the 90s. I went to visit my Dad there when he was manager of the Hotel( silver dollar?) I remember the first roads and casino there and you can could walk the main street and pick up leftover pieces of turquoise as big as a football. I still have 1 of them .I have pictures of the place before the Japanese investors came in to make it a vacation/gambling attraction. You could drive.un further up to Victor, Co. and have the best bowl of green chili you could eat. All the people were really nice and it was a great place to visit and explore. My dad loved living there after he retired.

As I get older I prefer visiting small towns, to big cities. They have a quiet charm to them.
I've lived there. I also lived in Victor. Gambling hadn't been legalized when I was there for the first time. My Ma & Dad both owned Ice Cream Shops in Cripple Creek. I left & came back to Ohio but eventually returned to Cripple Creek & I was very sad to see how they had " commercialized " the town. I'll never forget the train whistle all day long. I miss this town desperately. I miss Colorado. I'm back in Ohio now💔
I lived in Cripple Creek as well back in 1985. Do you remember Bucks Barn? It was the only convenience/gas station in town it was owned by Bill and Linda they had two kids Will and Cindy, they were related to David and Cynthia Fritz.

I'm very partial to Victorian Era construction, Chris, particularly brick structures. Brick construction, done by the talented artisans of the time, produced decorative effects that're a far cry from the flat, faceless concrete boxes that have supplanted them. The tower at 4:38 might be the hose drying tower of a fire station. I don't know how they dry their hoses after use in fighting fires, but speaking as a model railroader with a penchant for modeling old-time Western railroading, I can recall several kits to build Colorado fire stations, all equipped with such towers. My dad was a farm boy from "Missourah" who grew up in the 'teens and early 1920s. He always said the entire family of asses, from burros through mules (half jackass, half horse) are smarter than some of the men who used them. Did you notice their pretty eyes? I took my sister up north in Calif and she passed out from the high elevation. I don't recall how I figured that out, but after speeding to get back down, she was just fine (she was from N Indiana; flat land). You just reminded me of that, so many years ago.
I believe animals can sense if someone is friendly or malicious, the donkeys must have felt that you radiate good vibes.
If you go to the Wildwood Casino on the edge of town we used the rock that they mined for gold
and put it on the Veneer of the building. if you look closely you can still find gold flakes in the rocks.
In the Bronco's billy casino i built the Brick arches in the interior of the newer sections.
Lotta fun in that town, even had to go to the court house once..:)
Awwww the burros are so cute. We have a old town here in Az🌵called Oatman where the burros roam the streets. I’ve yet to go there.

You can spend years in Colorado visiting all the mining towns but some really cool mining towns are along the Arkansas River from Cannon City to Salida along the opposite side of the road is Railroad tracks and if your lucky you will see big horn sheep walking the railroad track

Cripple creek used to be the state capital then it moved to old Colorado city in Colorado Springs then to Denver. In its heyday it had and estimated 10,000 residents. One of my favorite cities in the country I hope to live there someday.
We have donkeys. They're super cool. They love weeds and grass.
Hi Chris, Donkeys can be very friendly animals, they have probably been around that area since the mining days then when the mines started to shut down the miners let them go and of course nature did her due from then till now. Thanks for sharing. xx💖🤘
You're actually correct. They are protected and taken care of by the city, mostly funded through our casinos and museums.
The train only takes you about 4 miles, just past some of the old mine sites. There's a ton of abandoned mine shafts where the ground was dug, but no gold was found. The history of the town is interesting, but it's sad that the majority of the town now is bars & casinos... Reminds me a lot of Deadwood South Dakota...
I lived in a city of about 8,000 in northern Wisconsin, built in lumbering times, whose major industry is a huge paper mill. We were startled, one year, when it was announced that we had the largest ratio of bars (you can't call the "saloons" in WI; don't know why) to people in the US, second only to a little coal mining town in Pennsylvania. Of course, our winters weren't a patch on those in Colorado. I wanted to settle down for the winter to work on a novel manuscript, so I rented a cabin in the Rockies in September. On the 20th, we had a snowstorm that dumped 40 inches of snow on us! You can't blame working people for making sure they winterize themselves with adequate "antifreeze." Stay safe.

The burros were probably used for the mining and when they were done they just released them to the wild that's what they did out here in south Dakota.....carry some carrots and they'll be your new best friends.

The donkeys in Cripple Creek are used to people and tame. They are also descendants of the donkeys from the gold rush days. These animals are cared for, they are sheltered during the winter months. Each one has a name and they are the towns mascot/pets. They are smart, I have heard stories from people who live there they open gates and turn on water spigots. I live in Canon City about an hour south of Cripple Creek and have been in CC many times. P.S. The best abandoned old mines are in Victor 5 miles away from Cripple Creek. Victor is the city of mines, it's fascinating to those who are interested in old western mining.

Beautiful Area ~ I use to live in Lakewood Colorado just off U.S. 6 west of Denver. Not far from Red Rocks & Golden. I've been to Colorado Springs a few times. Once was to see the Air Force play the Army at the Air Force Academy. Being a former Navy guy myself I held no biases, lol. You should try and make it to Estes Park. That's where the famous Stanley Hotel is. Stephen King stayed there and was inspired to write his book The Shining. However for the filming part of the movie the hotel owner wouldn't allow any filming to be done. Hollywood had to recreate those sets back in California.

We used to have a restaurant in my town called The Caboose. For real the restaurant was in an in an old caboose. There were two of them next to each other. One restaurant.
Just thought of a trip to central Florida, one could combine the Oviedo Chickens with a visit to New Smyrna Beach where a drone will soon indicate a very active population of black-tipped sharks along the shore.
Very cool. Reminds me of were live here in Guthrie Oklahoma. Those towers were used for hanging the fire hoses to let them dry.

Love this town, its changed alot since I had a house there.
I would spend hours after it rained looking for turquoise in the dirt gutters. I found some great pieces.
From my understanding all the gold was never found its still in the mountains.

Hi, Chris, thanks for taking us along on this trip to Cripple Creek, Co. It's a pretty town and I love the donkeys running around (which I think are wild), but they seem to be comfortable around people. I do have to take issue with you on your comment about the locomotive, I thought it was sickening, with the amount of damage that had been done to it, probably making it beyond reasonable restoreability. But I still gave you a like for the whole post. God Bless and stay safe.

Were you able to get into the Molly Kathleen mine? Not sure when they closed for the season..., but you get hauled down 1000 ft into the mine. Pretty cool if you've never been in an old mine.

The only real difference between a donkey and a burro is their domestication status. A donkey is domesticated, a burro is wild. Other than that, there is no difference -- burro is just the Spanish word for donkey. I so enjoy your videos. You could stand and talk about a door knob and I would enjoy it.
You see this type of thing (mules) in Oatman, Arizona (named after the Oatman Massacre), which is also a mining town, but not beautiful like Cripple Creek.
So a funny story about the free roaming donkeys. I had a friend in HS that had access to everyone's locker combo. This girl pranked him so he collected burro shit one day and put it in her locker for passing period. I think his prank was more clever. I think she coated his windshield in syrup and honey. He had a bum arm too so he wasn't happy cleaning her prank up with one arm.

The donkeys that roam in cripplecreek are descendants from the ones that worked in the gold mines,,,,,,,every so often they get rounded up and put up because people feed them junk food and they put on a farm for awhile to get them rehabbed,there is also once a year a festival called donkey derby days.I live here
The empty lot used to have the Bank of Cripple Creek. The Muellers owned it in the 70s. i smoked many doobs with Ted And Tom in the upstairs apartment.

I used to live there and worked at the gold mine in Victor. Elev 11500 feet. Fun fact; CC has 1100 people and 22 casinos. Two bars and lots of red foxes and burros. I lived there back in 2014-15. Plus: Nice people but not a place to meet women. Neg: Too many Q-tips going to the casinos there.
I've been there twice and don't remember seeing any donkeys
