I was on this train on 20 April 2012. The Steam Inc excursion was originally intended to go through to Gisborne but the railway was closed just beforehand. This train was actually the last ever train to Oputama and we spent an hour there while the loco was turned around and then returned to Wairoa. We then boarded a bus to Gisborne, stayed the night and the next morning were taken to the whalerider marae before returning to Wairoa and catching the train back to Napier - 1 May 2012. ASMR 😍 (I'm mimicking the sound lol) My grandaughter & I took this trip on a steam train from Napier aprox 10 years ago. I live in Ormondville. Also did 5 viaducts. And stay at the train station often.
I used to assist the guards on the railcars from Napier in 1961, 62, and 63. This was a very scenic line and should be opened to tourist traffic again. I love the sound of the Da, and was at Napier when they first arrived. Thanks for the posting, memories are coming back.
NZ Railways tried some Garrat locomotives at one one point but they were a failure and all were scrapped or converted. There are 1 or 2 Garrat locomotives from South Africa imported for preservation but not running see www.steaminc.org.naz/our-fleet/steam-locomotives/garratt-398/
Very well-tuned loco, producing almost no fumes! Unusual for such an old loco!
just went past our house lol
Damn she's making a sweet noise at 37 seconds 👍

A blast from the past. Two engineers, a gaurds van with fuck all for the gaurd to do. Any wonder the gisb napier line got shut down.

loved my home town as a child
Is there any update on reopening this line? I read that they were looking to restore services to Wairoa.
Hey Nigel. As far as I know, they are just about ready to run to Wairoa, as far as Gisborne goes, who knows what will happen.
were they a v8 diesel?
The G12 locos were a v12 567C engine I think.
12-567C. The DB (G8) were 8-567C V8
Hey Hunter
This is all shot in New Zealand in the South Pacific.
Thanks
Marty
Hey mate. I shot this on my DSLR which is a Canon 1D MKIV. The lenses I used were the 24-105 and 70-200mm. Thanks
Marty
Marty, that's really sharp footage. Coils you tell me (a) what you film on, and(b) what settings you use to upload?
Beautiful, isn't it :-)
Yeeesss 😍
fuck that sounds awesome
I have a question, Does New Zealand still have any narrow guage Garratt Articulated Steam Locos? ones that still pull passengers?
