I always worry about getting bit off by Pike in the Northern Michigan and Canadian waters. Any way to run a leader when fishing for smallmouth with jerk baits like that?

I lived in GR for about 7 years. Michigan is a beautiful state.

You are brave to remove those hooks with bare hands when they are that sticky sharp...one flip by that fish and those hooks are deep in your fingers

Probably Burt or mullet lake Traverse city has many lakes with smallmouth like that Traverse bay is great too.
If I lived where big smallmouth live I would never fish for largemouth
