    I recently started the BRS Tropic Marin hybrid method. Two part dosing with TM “A” in the alk and TM “K” in the cal. The a third dosing part “C.” I still do water changes but it was getting to were they weren’t getting the elements up enough. Nitrates and Phosphates are always 10ppm and .03 and never been an issue, refugium. I’ll be sending in another ICP in a few months to see where I’m at.

    The first 12 months of setting up my 250 gallon tank, I do water changes every 2 weeks the first 6 months, then finally once a month for the other 6 months. Since then, I haven't done a water change in 2 years! I dose Ca, Mg, KH and No3Po4. I test weekly and adjust accordingly. I also have a sump with chaeto growing and an algae scrubber running 24/7 (which I have to clean out weekly as the algae grows fairly quickly). Weekly I test for KH, No3, Po4 and salinity (all on weekends) and adjust accordingly. On one of the weekdays, I clean my skimmer, algae scrubber as mentioned, suck out detritus from the sump into a filter sock (while the water goes right back into tank), dust off detritus from the live rock and finally clean the glass with a magnet scrapper. I don't really get too hands on in the display tank. That's all there is to it. Still sounds like a lot of work but it can be done fairly quickly & I spend approx. 2 hours a week on tank maintenance. While water changes is the "quickest" way to get parameters in check, I decided early on to find a regime that involves no water changes as I've seen others doing it. I guess tank size also matters as the smaller the tank is, the more likely parameters are to swing and thus water changes becomes more important. The larger the tank, the more likely you are to 'get away' with water changes in my opinion. The only thing to me that costs "a bit more than expected" is the use of RedSea No3Po4 (I use about 1x 1000ml a month) but it keeps my nitrates 0-5 (worst case 5-10 ppm) and phosphates close to zero fairly consistently even with heavy feeding. I keep mostly LPS and softies, and they're doing really well. To me, the key is to start out with water changes then slowly once the tank has matured, decrease the number of water changes and finally (hopefully) get to a point where no water changes are required anymore.

      What do you do when salinity drops? Dump salt in main tank?

    • @kenlu7261
      @kenlu7261 2 роки тому

      @@davidmurphy4672 Yes but gradually of course. I had it figured out, if SG (1.025 is my target) drops by 0.001, I just add 2 cups of my salt, if the salinity increases beyond 1.026 SG, I add a quarter of RODI water from my bucket. Now I'm down to around 1 hour of maintenance per week. Long holidays I take the time to clean out my pumps and do a more thorough maintenance.

    • @kenlu7261
      @kenlu7261 2 роки тому

      @@davidmurphy4672 The thing is you can't control how much gets evaporated and how frequent the auto top off (assuming it's automatic) turns on/off. For me, it's a simple weekly check and I figured out how much salt to add. Salinity usually drops for me and I have to add bi-weekly. In some ways, I think this is how trace elements are kept in check (though I don't do any trace element testing).

    I think for a new tank your going want to do water changes at least for the 1st year. However your schedule allows . You do want to manually remove the detritus build up. Once you got that under your belt you can start extending the time with no water changes.

    When starting, my own personal opinion is people should start off doing water changes and ensure that they test regularly. Without testing you have no idea what the tank is doing, what it is consuming and what it building up which you need to get rid of. Although you recommend occasional water change regardless I would also highlight/stress that people keep enough marine salt around for a major water change even if they do not do water changes. You may have an emergency where you need to do one and do not want to scramble around trying to locate some. An option not mentioned for nitrate/phosphate removal is an algae scrubber where you deliberately grow algae instead of chaeto. Some people swear by them.

    I am starting my first ever saltwater 29g aquarium. Know absolutely nothing about them. It was my grandson's idea to buy it for me. So I'm setting it up now, but as I watch these videos I realize there's so much I do not know about it, like equipment and maintenance. I also realized the dealer lied to my grandson about what would be needed to set up and sold him saltwater, which I've since learned I could have made myself. Now he's nearly spent all of the ($700) funds he'd saved for it and it looks like I need a lot more to get this thing going before I can put any live stock in it. And the store has a no refund policy. I'm finding this very frustrating. He has $160 left to work with. Personally, as much as I love saltwater tanks, I never bought one for myself because I cannot afford it. Is there a cheaper and easier way to do this?

      He might have fallen on hard times and trying to repay back/probably working to pay them back... that's my likely explanation. All of his social media is gone. He might return (might..) in the future once things are better. I'm sure his tanks at home are still running.

    I first heard of this channel from the simple basic nano setup video. thought it was super pro and detailed he even made a playlist of the series pined at the top right corner, it has almost 1,000,000 views but then the next episode was low light and he was struggling to keep in frame bc he wasn't sitting. Then I checked the channel but it was only product reviews. Bro make coral reviews, and show some fish and aquarium lifestyle vlogs. The nano tank setup video shows your potential.

      When he was opening up his shop he partnered with someone but i cant remember what he did exaclty but he basically dropped out and basically ran away because he couldnt afford to contiue with the shop and i think the person he was partnered with him retaliated leaving him bankrupt or in a bad state and hes to ashamed to show his face on the internet again i cant remeber the full details but there used to be loads of comments from people who knew exaclty what happened and i cant remeber the full details from them as they all got removed im pretty sure michael is in the wrong here and this comment to will also be removed aswell

    I've been thinking about this, why anyone with a tank doesn't just do a cannister filter and then a hang on the back refugium. You get the benefit of a refugium, and an easy to clean filter. No need for a big sump, cleaning this sump, smell of the sump etc... 🤔

    • @joshavila1176
      @joshavila1176 3 роки тому +2

      IMO having stuff hanging off the back of the tank/in the tank takes away aesthetics. Also you are very limited if want to upgrade equipment down the line, and equipment that can be used in a sump is always more effective than HOB.
      You can make anything work however

    • @rudra7615
      @rudra7615 3 роки тому

      @@joshavila1176 wait, I guess this idea works for a nano tank and not a huge one with a massive skimmer etc. As for the aesthetic, I don't think having a hang on the back refugium is an issue as it is hidden and can be sleak.
      But your points are valid if the tank is huge. I can definitely see someone who wants to start a nano tank trying this route and benefiting from a refugium without a sump.
