    Happy you share the same opinion as our Schools. Wing Chun Kung Fu was an art invented by Shaolin Warriors who were already competent in other arts.... maybe the snake and crane styles ;) Wing Chun is a mixed martial art containing everything from Qi Gong to Qi Na to ground work. If your luck enough to be at a school which teaches good Wing Chun you will see how effective it really is !

    Everyone wants their Kung Fu to be special or pure,when in fact,such a thing is impossible. Every system is evolving and improving through masters and students. Same thing with Wing Chun. It's only logical Yip Man modernised and changed it so much during his life time.

    Sifu Sergio, obviously Yuen Kay Shan Influenced Yip Man, but what do you think about the story of Leung Bik being an alias for Fung Wah, student of Leung Jan, and classmate of Chan Wah Shun?
    Also, have you done any research on Lo Kwai lineage?

      +Austin Goh Martial Arts Training & Philosophy No, you're wrong. There was no Ng Mui or Wing Chun. There are no records they ever existed. That was just a rouse that was made up to keep the manchurian government away from the shaolin temple while wing chun was being made. it consists of five systems from the five elders. They are white crane, white eyebrow, hung gar, choy li fut, and shaolin. You need to read the sifus book.

      +The Wing Chun Kung Fu Channel by Sifu Sergio Will definitely be buying your book when I next get paid. Will be interesting to hear your informed take on the legend of the initial development of Wing Chun. As soon as I heard it, my nonsense radar started beeping at a lot of it. Nice little story, but reeks of romanticism. I kind of expect martial arts, such as Wing Chun, to have evolved in similar ways to a language.
      Over time there is change, moves are added and subtracted depending on the people practising the art. They can fuse with ideas from other styles, branch off into variants, and of course there is individual variation through experimentation and experience. In languages loanwords appear from other languages, dialects are going to be there, then the idiosyncrasies of a particular speaker which can change throughout a person's life.
      While there can be much common ground, a largely common grammar if you like, there is always change and variation. Purity seems an impossible thing: as long as people are involved, change and variation will also be involved. And, like in some languages like English, silly arguments of what is "proper" English, when the reality is that it has always been a living, organic, changing form.While I happen to go to a class where there is a lineage from Ip Man, via students of students of Samuel Kwok, thankfully they understand this nature of the art. Anyway, sorry for the essay, thought I'd chip in a little but it became a lot! Great video!

      It's not even close to the truth. There was NO Ng Mui or wing chun! There are no records of them ever existing. That was just a clever rouse to keep the Manchurian government away from the Shaolin temple long enough for them to train and to develop the newest and best system, wing chun. Wing chun was developed by the FIVE ELDERS, and consists of choy li fut, white eyebrow, white crane, hung gar and shaolin. The only moves taken out of wing chun were the triple duplicate moves in the forms. As long as you follow the ten concepts, and stay within their boundaries, any of the moves done in wing chun can be done at different levels and angles. No, you are WRONG! You CAN'T mix wing chun with ANY OTHER MARTIAL ART! This is because wing chun is the ONLY fully conceptual martial art on the planet. Other martial arts are usually technique-based, meaning the techniques dictate response, NOT the concepts. And some are a mix of BOTH, like JKD. By using wing chun in a technique-based martial art, you weaken the essence of the wing chun and make it less effective. That is why JKD is a second-rate martial art, in my opinion. It uses technique-based martial arts, like boxing, muay thai and grappling, among others, as it's main base, and that introduces major flaws and stiffness into the system. Wing chun's concepts give the system flexibility and you compromise that when you don't use all ten concepts at once. You also MUST know the whole wing chun system for it to work properly. By using bits and pieces of the system, you are not using all the benefits of the system, which help it to work properly, like proper footwork and proper way to close the distance. Technique-based systems have a tendency to stay in mid-range, which allows your opponent more opportunities to attack, or take you down. In wing chun, we are a close combat martial art, which means that we close the distance quickly, giving us a major advantage, because most do not know how to handle being pressured. No, purity of the wing chun system means NOT learning any other system but wing chun, and learning the complete system. That is the only way to insure that the system is learned properly and completely.

    • @stevenwarner9156
      @stevenwarner9156 8 років тому

      +mightymeatmonsta I think you have really misunderstood me, or perhaps I should have worded my comment with more thought, as I did write it quickly. I agree with you largely, perhaps almost completely. Especially on learning the entire system thoroughly and properly understanding all of the concepts and trying to master the entire system, and learning to use it.
      Also, I know the legend of the characters of Ng Mui and Wing Chun is almost certainly nonsense. I thought that was clear when I said the my nonsense radar went off when I first heard the story, but looking upon the wording in my comment, there seems some room for ambiguity as to what I was referring to.
      When I refer to borrowing from other styles, it must be able to fit within the conceptual basis of Wing Chun, with certain movements perhaps tweaked, or inspiring appropriate but new movements to fit within the system, the grammar if you will. I was putting forth an idea that perhaps in the past it evolved by doing so. It was an off the cuff hypothesis based on how many systems, whether it be martial arts, computing, science, languages, and so on can develop and how you can get variants in certain systems, mainly in the likes of language, and how in other martial arts you can get different variants which share a common core.
      I certainly admit, I am ignorant on many aspects of Wing Chun as a beginner, but what brought me to Wing Chun rather than any other art was the thoroughness and logic I could see in the system and conceptual basis of it after reading into it.
      There is no need for hostility.

    I really like this video. The same can apply to any martial art, don't limit yourself or put the art in a box. I for one believe that all martial arts are meant to change and evolve. Just my opinion of course.

    I truly enjoy your explorations of the history and roots of Wing Tjun, especially the Yong Chun White crane. I had the opportunity a very long time ago to Study the basics of White Crane in NYC . And though that school closed it affected how I approached the classical Okinawan Arts taught to me in Ryukyu Kempo by Seiyu Oyata. Which is much different than modern styles of Karate and places emphasis on energy, placement and proper form for Life Protection ( not Karate Do but Karate Jitsu, and the even older KARA=Chinese influences which were primarily White Crane). I see the roots of the Classical Karate that I was taught in your movements. Please never stop learning or passing on knowledge it is a honor and a pleasure to watch.

    Sergio has done well in his research,. Respect is given. You have to become your own teacher and use your teacher as a guide. For me I was taught the Ving Tsun format and I did not just believe what I was told the times have changed you have to test it and if you feel you can add or remove that`s fine. You have to teach what was taught to you first. As long as you can say you changed it and why. For me most do not understand well enough before they make changes.. I just keep simplifying more and more.. looking deeper and deeper. Always a student not a master as long as I am learning, they is my interest. For results there is no easy short cuts but lots of practice. The only thing I would say is to find the balance in all you do, each technique has a optimum balance. I challenge Ving Tsun to work and love teaching others! As Bruce said knowing is not enough we must apply. And everyone has their road to go.

    Sifu Sergio, I only have one comment. Maybe there are loyal disciples of Ip Man that would just like to pass down what Ip Man taught (whoever he learned from), which they found to be "worth" preserving. The way you say it in this video, is as if Ip Man taught junk.

      The Wing Chun Kung Fu Channel by Sifu Sergio brilliantly articulated, iv tried to tell people ip man didnt make wing chun he only made it easier to learn, untill people realise that there is no "magic sauce" and definitely no true lineage, I find it incredibly insulting for someone to renounce all other wing chun other than their own, most of these people have only ever trained in one system so I find it hard to understand how they are qualified to judge other systems, it must be through their sifu's im sorry to say. Untill we can all get along and train with each other and exchange knowledge and ideas wing chun will continue to "limp" on

  • @GrafRollo

    It is very difficult to understand what the sense of this topic is. Chinese Wing Chun is a Health and Wellness training with Taoistic background. European Wing Chun is more practical oriented and in some lineages even suitable to real combat. Both methods have their benefits and disadvantages. But what is meant by "Pure Lineage". in this context? "Pure..." ?. Do they mean that there is a legendary Yim Wing Tsun with some supernatural skills and you have to find the real "Pure Lineage" to learn how to fly above a house? Or do they believe that there is a pure lineage wich has been initiated by the Buddha himself? It would be really interesting if somoene can answer the question what "pure lineage" in this case means and what kind of special benefit this implicates

    Thanks. This is one of the reasons why I am not an instructor anymore. It’s the reason I gave up on studying here in the USA. My wing Chun, wing tsun, ving Chun ... experience has been exactly as you have explained.
    I still practice my gong fu. It keeps me happy and healthy. I have taught to others and it was effective, and saved them. I can say that honestly that I’ve never had to use it...Thank God!!! I fear what might happen.
    I agree. Everyone needs to wake up and unite for the art.
    I am currently researching Eddie Chong/Pan nam(for past 10 years), and also Andreas Hoffman/Chi Shim(same). Before that I studied Chu Shong Tin who my Sifu (Richard Guerra) had spent some time with when he was training with Ip Ching. He also was Leung Ting’s top Student for some period(1970’s?) and before that was Filipino wing Chun when he was fighting in Vietnam.
    I’m not trying to boast. I’m no great fighter. I don’t really tell anyone about my training or experience. This is probably the first time I’ve ever revealed anything like this. Why now? Because I believe in what you are trying to do. I also wish that I had someone to practice with, and I might start a group that would be for free(or as free as can be... nothing is really for free). I really respect my teachers and love this art. Thank you!!! God Bless you.

      Yip man was the one whom simply modified the system for the sake of practicality. ..And,the first to test it against western boxers with great success!
      Bruce Lee simply took it further.
      He just had to much going on at the same time,and over exerted himself.

    Absolutely right, sifu! This is why I say you should do tutorials from many different sifus and masters. Not everyone one knows every nuance and suttleties of the style. This way you get a well-rounded approach to your training. You should also do research because wing chun is a science, the science of angles, to be exact, and as in science, you have to do extensive research to learn it and apply it. It helps you to understand the system better.

    You did a wonderful job in finding the roots of WC! for the WC world to know there is more to WC.

    Thank you sifu. It is always so good to hear you talk on and see you perform wing chun.That puts light on the William chueng controversy.Sifu is it wrong for me to put my own spin on wing chun and still call it traditional wing chun. Or even wing chun is self.For instance they say wing chun doesn't kick high. But why not teach it just encase. They say the system only has front, side and what I like to call the invisible kick and some systems low half round kick. But I can think of four other kicks that would fit and not change the systems theory of close range. To better prepare the wing chun man for more versatile choices in combat. Doesn't the art have to change, vary and grow with time, persons and circumstances. While still maintaining on teaching is traditional foundation and structure. Sincerely Jerry C

    Wing Chun is a very individualized martial art in that it benefits different people in different ways. I complement your search for knowledge, but you miss the main point of learning Wing Chun. Ip Man was a stepping stone to Wing Chun moving west. If it were not for Ip Man and Bruce Lee, this conversation would not exist.

    I agree with most of what your saying. Having researched Chan Yiu min lineage, Ip man's Foshan teachings to Gwok fu and leung Gai (which differ slightly) and then the HK lineage it is clear his idea's were constantly evolving. Yuen was likely an influence but the vast majority of what we know on Yuen comes through the eyes of Sum nun's statements and can not be taken as fact. Just saying some caution and objectivity is needed. As to Luk Dim Boon Guan, because it fell out of practice or some of Ip man's sihing's did not learn it or pass it on or chose not to show it to you does not mean it never existed! Gulao does indeed teach a 3 point pole which according to them was shortened down by Leung Jan so to assume there was no 6 1/2 prior and that Ip man got this only from Tang Yik is suspect. Something that needs to be re examined objectively. Sure he *May* have been influenced but he certainly had access to the form. Moy Yat legend of the Kung fu masters recalls private conversation on the pole and it's history. So again I agree with most of what your saying and certainly the attitude your expressing but not all of the conclusions. Regards (I enjoy your videos), Tom

      Yuen Kay San lineage has Luk Dim Boon Guan. Yiu Choy lineage has Luk Dim Boon Guan. Chan Yiu Min lineage has Luk Dim Boon Guan. So for Sergio to declare that ONLY Tang Yik is the right source of the pole form, and that Ip Man stole the first movements to create Luk Dim Boon Guan is really biased. Sergio is now into Weng Chun from the Dai Dak Lan group, and dissing Ip Man wherever he can. It just does not make sense anymore.

    What is Wing Chun? As someone who has trained and touched hands with both Hong Kong and mainland Wing Chun I find the Hong Kong Wing Chun to be far superior in my opinion. There rooting, center line, chi sao, forward intention is far greater. Most mainland guys are all over the place in there chi sao, no forward intention, no center line. It is like they are flopping there hands around. They rely mostly on speed. Just my opinion. As for Ip Ching or Ip Chun ,"knowing the truth". What truth? The truth that there Dad created a far superior system of Wing Chun, Ip Chun went to Fatshan as a sign of respect to the ancestors and his Dad and his Dad's teachers not to admit any truth, not to admit he and is Dad's style is lacking as you are suggestion. "Give his excuses to the Yuen Kay San family they know the truth" never happened.

      I think you mispelled his name, but I think I know who you are talking about. If he is from Malaysia, then chances are, he is one of the masters who knows one of the older systems of wing chun.

    why is Yip Mans Wing Chun so popular? I study Wing Chun and everyone I've met and most videos I see online of Wing Chun practitioners, we all can all trace our lineage to Yip Man. I know in Vietnam it's a different case. But why is that it's hard to find Wing Chun that doesn't trace back to Yip Man?

    to wing ho leung......one thing i know is missed from some sifuz is, the ground game of wing chun. wing chun chi na used to be lost. my sifu has brought it back from the grave. it's one of the most amazing eye openers of the century, in my opinion. sure it looks like jew gitsu, but the heart and focus is our wing chun, horizontally.

    You have omitted the fact that Yip Man also studied from none other than one of Dr. Leung Jan's sons.....Leung Bik! That's what GM YIp Chun says believe it or not.

    • @SifuSergioChannel
      @SifuSergioChannel  10 років тому

      The whole Leung Bik story is a hoax,and in reality it was Yuen Kay San and later on people like Chu Chung man and Tang Yick

      The Wing Chun Kung Fu Channel by Sifu Sergio I have video footage where GM Ip Chun says his father, also learned privately from Leung Bik. Is he lying then? Why would he lie?

    • @knuckles745
      @knuckles745 10 років тому +1

      +Lescouflair. Chun isn't lying. Man did learn from leung bik who essentially taught him how to put shaolin kung fu back into wing chun. People rarely discuss the shaolin origin of wing chun and the abbess ng mui. People who make videos like this are simply trying to spread their propaganda to artificially prop up their form of wing chun. Lots of ego and pride in the world of wing chun... probably why lots of sifus don't spar with their students.

    Wing Chun is a best Martial Art, Ip Man was the best champion in the world

  • @notusingmyname4791
    @notusingmyname4791 6 місяців тому

    pure lineage of any martial art is ... laughable, and a petty thing to focus on. Ip Man's students who teach: Wong Sheun-Leung, William Cheung, Leung Sheung, Ip Chung, are very different from each other; they focus on the various concepts at different times and even give them different priorities... and even the next step down are quite different from each other... Barry Lee, David Petersen and Gary Lam come from WSL and their teachings are quite different, Alon Peterson is quite different from Master Joe (dunno his full name, but touching hands with him and learning from him was different than learning from his Sidi, Alon, who did become a sifu of his own school in his own right)
    and the same can be said for other martial arts... hell no martial art studio/dojo/kwoon produces the same martial artist twice. If one person is left handed, that will affect their teaching, if another person has a mind for geometry and another person has a mind for calligraphy learning from the same school and teacher... will teach slightly different takes on their martial arts. And it should be.. we humans are a varied species, why should we seek conformity? So long as it works for them and what they teach benefits another in some way.
