Monster House

The animation in this movie terrified me more than anything else in it. Like, it’s somehow nailed that realistic-yet-also-not-realistic point at the deepest pit of the uncanny valley.
Imo, despite what these guys say, I think that's what makes the animation good in this movie, and using old mocap methods effectively. In a mocap movie where the uncanny valley animation doesn't fit the vibes it's going for (like the Polar Express movie, though I'll admit having a soft spot for that movie too), than it's not the best animation style for that movie.
With Monster House, it fits because the movie always intended to make itself look like what would happen if Norman Rockwell wanted to illustrate a horror novel, and the uncanny valley mocap helps with that vibe.

For this movie, it was actually people live-acting it in those weird suits with ping-pong balls. The reason the animation was so slow was because it was actual people and not just animated characters. It was called performance capture animation. It's really cool.
I always hated how the CGI looked, even as a kid. I didn’t think it was scary, I just thought it was really ugly.

Monster House literally takes the concept of a haunted house to a whole new level. Honestly it’s hard to look at a standard haunted house without expecting to come alive and try to eat you.

2:22 the reason why the animation seems slow is because the characters movements are based on real actors movements. The actors for this movie wore suits that would capture their movement and put them into a computer. They then made the character models in the movie mimic the movements.

My elementary school had this thing for 1-3 graders where the school took care of us until our parents arrived to pick us up. Sometimes we watched movies and one of them was Monster House, on Halloween. I swear to god no movie has ever scared me this much. I was little, sure, but that concrete corpse falling apart to reveal a skeleton haunted me for months 😂

It was produced by Robert Zemeckis and written by Dan Harmon. I also don't mind the animation all that much. Character models are kinda odd, but once you get used to it it doesn't bother much.

Fun fact: when I was in 7th grade, some kid wrote the plot of this movie as a story for an assignment (we were told to write short horror stories) and the teacher had no idea until one of the other students pointed it out.
I can't remember anything I learned in school, but I can remember that moment clear as day.

So, back in the day, and less frequently now, vacuum cleaners had self-propulsion, they would actually move forward, but not so strong that they couldn't be pulled back, it was surprisingly subtle.
So why did manufacturers stop creating vacuum cleaners with self propulsion?
@@twistedyogert Don't know, best guess is that a manufacturer just up and took the propulsion out of a model and it sold well, so they kept doing that.
@@twistedyogert I think it’s because vacuums have become more efficient so they put out less power so it became vestigial imo like how modern lightbulbs can’t boil water

I remember trying to watch this as a kid, but being terrified as soon as the basketball went onto the lawn and turning it off. The only scary thing to me now is my bizarre ability to misremember animated movies I watched as a kid and think they were live action, 8 years later. I have done this with both monster house and polar express. Whenever I Remembered watching monster house, before watching it again, the belief that it was live action made it 10X more frightening for young me.
I had a similar experience when I was little. It was monster house, and I turned off the movie the second before nebbercracker died because I thought that man was the most horrifying thing in the world.

I think that's part of the film.
As a subcontractor I had to comment. Cement is in concrete. But you can mix a batch of cement without it being concrete. Concrete has a bunch of gravel and small stones in it. Usually used for sidewalks. Cement is used more as a filler. It's just water and Cement mix so it doesn't have small stones in it. Makes it smoother and easier to fill small spaces with. It's used as mortar between bricks. You can use it to fix small cracks or holes in your sidewalk. Constance being buried in Cement makes sense. Simply because the layer over her body looks incredibly smooth. Where as if it was concrete. To get that smooth appearance you'd have to put in a little work to make the water rise to the top and stones sink down further. Otherwise she'd look like she's textured or covered in gravel

I actually do have a vacuum cleaner like that where it does pull itself forward. It was common in the early 60s apparently. It's not an effective design for a vacuum cleaner. It's really hard to use.
My grandma does actually have a self-propelled vacuum, it just goes into reverse when you pull backwards. 😂

Fun fact: The movie was originally supposed to be a live action movie in 1998, and would've been directed and designed by Wishmaster creator, Robert Kurtzman (makeup artist of many horror films including Evil Dead, Spawn, New Nightmare, Jason Goes to Hell, and even The Walking Dead). His idea had the house have eternal human organs inside of the house instead of a carpet for a tongue and glass window for eyes but were to have a real tounge, teeth, flesh for walls and such. One concept art online had the tree arms attacking a kid inside of his own house. It's not clear if it was supposed to be a kids movie or a R rated body horror movie but with the concept of a house with organs, it might as well be.

I remember my class in 5th grade being forced to watch this in the dark. Specifically my reading class.
Literally the split second before the plant hit the ground, an ad came and I was literally laughing till I couldn't live anymore.
As someone who loves this movie I have to admit that every joke made here was earned lol.
That said. The movie is slow because literally the entire thing is Mocap. Even the giant house was Mocap during the chase scene. They actually hired children to be the main characters. Yes this means a dude in a green skin tight suit got on all fours and chased a bunch of kids for one of the scenes in this film.
That sounds EXTREMELY fun. I want to see THAT.
