It was unfortunate for the other nominees...because Tull is in no way, shape or form...a heavy metal band...but I knew they were going to win just because they put them in that category...
Metallica had just performed live and they showed them backstage all sweaty and smiling and then...oof. I also remember after they performed "One" the host Billy Crystal said "That song, of course, was written by Steve Allen." Fuckin double oof.
I saw Jethro Tull in San Diego around 1980ish. He opened the concert by swinging on a rope, out to the stage, letting go in mid-air. His flute was slung over his shoulder like a soldiers rifle. After letting go of the rope and while still in the air, he whipped that flute over his shoulder, and by the time his feet hit the stage, he was ripping on that flute like nobody's business. Kicked off one hell of a show.
As it was explained to me years ago by a music professor in college who was part of the production team, the song is an allegory on false moral superiority by the upper class using the jungle as an analogy. Whether its true or not, don't know. But, it does seem to fit."Walking through forests of palm tree apartments" = high rise apartments where the rich live. The "monkeys" are the people who go out and party all week, but then go to church on Sunday (comes into play in the last verse). The next verse is referring to upper-class people being afraid of lower class people "Is it so frightening to have me at your shoulder?" For the last verse, you have to have an understanding of music publishing. The artist provides the lyrics to the publisher EXACTLY as they want it copyrighted. Its why the liner notes and sequence on Pink Floyd's "The Wall" don't match the actual lyrics and sequence. The lyrics and sequence changed between copyright submission and album pressing. If you notice in the lyrics, the words "He" "His" and "King" are all capitalized by Ian Anderson = normally used to refer to God or an all-powerful being. "The rivers are full of crocodile nasties. And He who made kittens put snakes in the grass" = There all kinds of bad things out there and God made all things, good AND bad. "Yes, the King on His sunset lies waiting for dawn. To light up His Jungle as play is resumed, the monkeys seem willing to strike up the tune" = As Sunday ends and Monday dawns, the hypocrisy of the monkeys going back to partying as they preach how morally superior they are.
Yep, that was how I always took it too. Ian Anderson was as equally willing to scold the rich for their hypocrisy as he was to take the common man to tak for their treatment of the poor and down -trodden.
Yes, first Tull song I ever heard, was listing to Top 40 radio. Don't think I heard any more Tull on the radio until I moved to an area that had a rock station as opposed to Top 40. I think the short, direct, radio song nature of it explains why the verse is so much better than the chorus. The chorus is more like a standard radio song, while the verse is more like some of Ian Anderson's deeper lyrics, like "Skating Away" from the same album.
The idea that he rhymed "... are full of crocodile nasties." with "put snakes in the grass, he's" ... will FOREVER be one of the most iconic rhymes ... EVER!

This was one of Tull's radio hits. Fun song but as a hardcore Tull fan, I lean towards the deeper cuts. Got to do "My God" from Aqualung or "Songs from the Wood" title track. "Living in the Past" is also a radio hit but it's in 5/4 time so quite interesting. "Skating Away" from this album is great. So many great songs from these guys. My favorite band of all time after the Beatles.

Agreed, this was a fun, made for radio song and by far, not one of their best pieces of work. My all time favorite is 'Minstrel in the Gallery ', especially the live performance of that song in Paris. They were a fabulous concert band. I also loved 'The Third Hoorah'. Count the number of non tradition instruments in that song.

"Moths" is my favorite song off of that album, and I think "Acres Wild" is the most interesting first listen, but there's no way they'd do either of those because they're not big radio hits.
There was a single version, but it cuts out like 3 or 4 minutes so i dont recommend it. The full remastered one is the way to go , and it makes even more sense in the context of that great album in my opinion.

"Thick as a Brick" stands out, for me... though Tull has produced so many masterpieces ... I think you'll enjoy 'Minstrel in the Gallery", but ... think again, once you've had the intense pleasure of hearing their entire discography. So many great tunes, so little time. 😷👍💓

Yes, I realize a full album listen is not in their wheelhouse, but if you want the full scope, power, and spectrum of Jethro Tull, 'Thick as a Brick' is probably the ultimate listen. Also, they were definitely a band that got better by orders of magnitude when you saw them live. Ian Anderson is a consummate showman and commands an audience with the best of them.
I have the original year release of that on vinyl ,it was a clever cover made as a news paper ..the song is a great folk tune ..I still lean heavy to the first 3 albums when they were into the rock jazz vibe ..those albums are raw ..
Locomotive Breath is my all-time favorite song...period. Any artist, any genre...if I’m driving and it comes on the radio, I have to pull over and listen because it absorbs all of my focus and attention.

Me seeing an Alex and Andy Jethro Tull thumbnail: YAAYY!! My favorite band! Seeing it is Bungle In the Jungle: smh, smh. Bungle In the Jungle is to Jethro Tull as I Want to Know What Love Is is to Foreignor, what Dyer Maker is to Led Zeppelin, as Keep On Loving You is to REO Speedwagon. To say BITJ is Jethro Tull "lite" is the biggest understatement in the history of mankind. Oh well, you are right that the song has superior production values and is an excellent introduction to a newbie to the band, actually the War Child album is the one that is the most accessible to a pop audience, but I'd rather you do a banger like Nothing Is Easy or A New Day Yesterday, a masterpiece like Songs From the Wood, there are so many excellent Jethro Tull songs. So if you want to get blown away, to hear something truly unique, do My God from the Aqualung album.
Michael Llewellyn if this is their weakest tune, then imagine what their stronger tune are. I put Jethro Tull on the same tier as Pink Floyd, Rush, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and ZZ Top for the sheer number of absolutely incredible songs. One of the greatest of all time. BTW, this song along with Teacher are a blast to play live and always get great audience responses.
Come on, it's not _that_ bad. :D It's a radio tune, sure, and very conservative in terms of melody, but still quite fun to listen to. Plus the lyrics are quite good as well.

I first heard this one riding the bus to jr high school around '73. Back in the 1970s the school buses had radios. I heard many hits for the first time going to/from school! THAT'S how much music was a part of our lives. A school without a music class was unheard of. I never heard the name "Jethro Tull" until a few years later when their "Minstral in the Gallery" track hit FM radio. Peace out. Let the music play!

Yes, "War Child" is very innovative and has a unique timing structure; this whole album is exceptional. I agree very much with others about "Skating Away". Once you actually "get" Jethro Tull, you pretty much love every song they make, eh?
Good revue. JT is SO diverse. This song was a regular radio hit/tune back in the day. When your High School girlfriend likes it and sings it out loud when it comes on the radio you're an automatic fan! But, if you want JT core music it depends what you are looking for or craving. Rock, Folk, melodic tune? How about the tune that got me hooked in HS? "Living in the Past". This was ready HEAVY back in the 70's. TX guys. Heavy,,,go for "New Day Yesterday" or "Nothing is Easy" from their earlier stuff.

You're putting "The Cart before the Horse" if you drop off the First Time Listener at the Deep Tracks. It'd be like introducing a first time listener of Led Zeppelin to "The Crunge" and then telling them to go "Deeper" cause they only get better. LOL!
This one is where a lot of hate comes in with Jethro Tull fans from way back,,older Tull fans will diss this one fast . I like it pretty well but others by TULL are much better

@@rexvisitor44 Acoustic, sure, but Cat knew how to beat out a rhythm on a guitar too. Some of the intonation on 'Peace Train' and some of the tracks from Tillerman really rip into it, and he could belt it out too when he wanted. He deserves some more love!
Tull had just had a critical kicking for their Passion Play album and were ready to pack up. This was a sort of come back and a more commercial direction. It's a great radio song and the whole album has plenty of variety. Check out Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses.
I remember hearing this on our local AM rock/pop station CKGM (Montreal) back in high school (Grade 9, I think). Jethro had finally made it to the mainstream!
Tull was so diverse and evolving. In 1970 (!) they released an album called "Benefit". On that album is a track called "With You There to Help Me". If you give it a listen, you'll love it. The whole collection is a masterpiece.
You should consider Nothing is Easy from the Stand Up album (1969) their second album. This is more of a hard rock/blues song with Martin Barre's great guitar interplaying with the excellent flute you always expect from Ian Anderson and you won't be disappointed.
I was just going to say Hymn43 might be my favorite. Short and to the point but it's a banger. And the lyrics really hit home, especially with everything going on today.
He has COPD and recently announced it publicly - which may explain why he's had trouble getting enough air to sing for awhile. I can't see him continuing to tour much longer, but he's had a far better run than most, and the vast majority of the music he composed and performed has stood the test of time.

For something really entertaining, see the reactions of Finnish classical flute teacher Heline on her channel, as she sees what Ian Anderson does with the flute for the first time - especially the flute solo from Tampa Stadium in 1976, which I had never seen before.
The crowd got it right! "Bungle in the Jungle" is a proper introduction song for the entry level listener of Jethro Tull. Although Aqua Lung Fans Evidently thought it was a sellout. Once you react to "Living in the Past" by Jethro Tull you can move along to more Classic Rock Bands.

Since I was a kid, I was never standing still to listen to a radio unless it was in a car and my parents were driving somewhere. Also, I had other favourite bands that I would go out and buy their albums -all of them were Beatle albums.

I was 13 yrs old when "Bungle in the Jungle" was released on 45-RPM in the US in October 1974, "Bungle in the Jungle" is the A-Side with "Back-door Angels" being the B-Side . Keep listening there are so many Classic 60's and 70's tunes that'll blow your mind.
Was in my teens when Tull was in their prime and my whole circle were Tull-heads and across the board the lot of us, 9 of us, unilaterally hated this sell-out song. Ugh. Do Thick as a Brick or some other great song they did, not schlock like this.
I was primarily a jazz and classical musician back then, with my main instruments being sax, clarinet, and flute. Then I went to see Jethro Tull touring with this album. It fricking changed my life. All of a sudden, I realized that music was so much more than I ever could have imagined. The brilliant combination of music amd theater absolutely blew my mind.
I was kind of scared when I saw they chose this one. It was a kind of hit single, but it's not something I would choose when introducing someone to the group. They liked it, which bodes well for some of their better stuff.
This is the first song I remember hearing that I knew was Jethro Tull. It's also one of the songs that got more airplay on stations that broadcast to wider audiences and not just hard rock stations: it hit #12 on the US charts. Their previous album had initially got fairly negative reviews and their manager had pulled a publicity stunt in light of this saying that JT was retiring from touring, which the band had no knowledge of and were pretty pissed off when they found out. Ian said the lyrics were part of him "exploring the human condition using analogies from the animal kingdom". Originally this was going to be a double album and have an accompanying movie, but they weren't able to get backing from a film studio. "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day" is another good song from this album. War Child was the album that turned me off of Tull, until Crest of a Knave and "Budapest" brought me back. Turns out there are gems in every Tull album.
When Thick As A Brick first came out my roommate played it so often that I finally cut the speaker wires to get some peace. I like it now and listen to it quite often.

Yeah. Ian has no great love for religion. Many of Tull’s songs are critical of religion and ”god”.

The whole album "Heavy Horses" is, IMO, their best.
"Moths" is my favorite song off of that album, and I think "Acres Wild" is the most interesting first listen, but there's no way they'd do either of those because they're not big radio hits.

There was a single version, but it cuts out like 3 or 4 minutes so i dont recommend it. The full remastered one is the way to go , and it makes even more sense in the context of that great album in my opinion.

Yes, I realize a full album listen is not in their wheelhouse, but if you want the full scope, power, and spectrum of Jethro Tull, 'Thick as a Brick' is probably the ultimate listen. Also, they were definitely a band that got better by orders of magnitude when you saw them live. Ian Anderson is a consummate showman and commands an audience with the best of them.

Locomotive Breath is my all-time favorite song...period. Any artist, any genre...if I’m driving and it comes on the radio, I have to pull over and listen because it absorbs all of my focus and attention.

Me seeing an Alex and Andy Jethro Tull thumbnail: YAAYY!! My favorite band! Seeing it is Bungle In the Jungle: smh, smh. Bungle In the Jungle is to Jethro Tull as I Want to Know What Love Is is to Foreignor, what Dyer Maker is to Led Zeppelin, as Keep On Loving You is to REO Speedwagon. To say BITJ is Jethro Tull "lite" is the biggest understatement in the history of mankind. Oh well, you are right that the song has superior production values and is an excellent introduction to a newbie to the band, actually the War Child album is the one that is the most accessible to a pop audience, but I'd rather you do a banger like Nothing Is Easy or A New Day Yesterday, a masterpiece like Songs From the Wood, there are so many excellent Jethro Tull songs. So if you want to get blown away, to hear something truly unique, do My God from the Aqualung album.
Michael Llewellyn if this is their weakest tune, then imagine what their stronger tune are. I put Jethro Tull on the same tier as Pink Floyd, Rush, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and ZZ Top for the sheer number of absolutely incredible songs. One of the greatest of all time. BTW, this song along with Teacher are a blast to play live and always get great audience responses.

I first heard this one riding the bus to jr high school around '73. Back in the 1970s the school buses had radios. I heard many hits for the first time going to/from school! THAT'S how much music was a part of our lives. A school without a music class was unheard of.

Good revue. JT is SO diverse. This song was a regular radio hit/tune back in the day. When your High School girlfriend likes it and sings it out loud when it comes on the radio you're an automatic fan! But, if you want JT core music it depends what you are looking for or craving. Rock, Folk, melodic tune? How about the tune that got me hooked in HS? "Living in the Past". This was ready HEAVY back in the 70's. TX guys. Heavy,,,go for "New Day Yesterday" or "Nothing is Easy" from their earlier stuff.

Don't count me in. I knew Aqua lung was not going to be matched or exceeded. "Bungle in the Jungle" and "Living in the Past" worked for me back in the day.

@@rexvisitor44 Acoustic, sure, but Cat knew how to beat out a rhythm on a guitar too. Some of the intonation on 'Peace Train' and some of the tracks from Tillerman really rip into it, and he could belt it out too when he wanted. He deserves some more love!
Side one of "thick as a Brick" is the ultimate Tull. Saw them six times in concert and they never disappointed.

Tull had just had a critical kicking for their Passion Play album and were ready to pack up. This was a sort of come back and a more commercial direction. It's a great radio song and the whole album has plenty of variety. Check out Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses.

Tull was so diverse and evolving. In 1970 (!) they released an album called "Benefit". On that album is a track called "With You There to Help Me". If you give it a listen, you'll love it. The whole collection is a masterpiece.

You should consider Nothing is Easy from the Stand Up album (1969) their second album. This is more of a hard rock/blues song with Martin Barre's great guitar interplaying with the excellent flute you always expect from Ian Anderson and you won't be disappointed.
It's a good song when it comes on the radio, before you know more of Tull. I'd go for Hymn 43.
I was just going to say Hymn43 might be my favorite. Short and to the point but it's a banger. And the lyrics really hit home, especially with everything going on today.

He has COPD and recently announced it publicly - which may explain why he's had trouble getting enough air to sing for awhile.
I can't see him continuing to tour much longer, but he's had a far better run than most, and the vast majority of the music he composed and performed has stood the test of time.
If you like his great flute, you HAVE to do "My God" - one of the more interesting tracks on Aqualung

For some rockier early Tull, try 2 from their 1969 album Stand Up. "A New Day Yesterday", and "Nothing Is Easy" showcased new (and permanent) guitarist Martin Barre. For something really entertaining, see the reactions of Finnish classical flute teacher Heline on her channel, as she sees what Ian Anderson does with the flute for the first time - especially the flute solo from Tampa Stadium in 1976, which I had never seen before.

The crowd got it right! "Bungle in the Jungle" is a proper introduction song for the entry level listener of Jethro Tull. Although Aqua Lung Fans Evidently thought it was a sellout. Once you react to "Living in the Past" by Jethro Tull you can move along to more Classic Rock Bands.

Since I was a kid, I was never standing still to listen to a radio unless it was in a car and my parents were driving somewhere. Also, I had other favourite bands that I would go out and buy their albums -all of them were Beatle albums.

Was in my teens when Tull was in their prime and my whole circle were Tull-heads and across the board the lot of us, 9 of us, unilaterally hated this sell-out song. Ugh. Do Thick as a Brick or some other great song they did, not schlock like this.
I was primarily a jazz and classical musician back then, with my main instruments being sax, clarinet, and flute. Then I went to see Jethro Tull touring with this album. It fricking changed my life. All of a sudden, I realized that music was so much more than I ever could have imagined. The brilliant combination of music amd theater absolutely blew my mind.
A lot of Tull fans hated this tune.
I was kind of scared when I saw they chose this one. It was a kind of hit single, but it's not something I would choose when introducing someone to the group. They liked it, which bodes well for some of their better stuff.
This is the first song I remember hearing that I knew was Jethro Tull. It's also one of the songs that got more airplay on stations that broadcast to wider audiences and not just hard rock stations: it hit #12 on the US charts. Their previous album had initially got fairly negative reviews and their manager had pulled a publicity stunt in light of this saying that JT was retiring from touring, which the band had no knowledge of and were pretty pissed off when they found out. Ian said the lyrics were part of him "exploring the human condition using analogies from the animal kingdom". Originally this was going to be a double album and have an accompanying movie, but they weren't able to get backing from a film studio. "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of the New Day" is another good song from this album. War Child was the album that turned me off of Tull, until Crest of a Knave and "Budapest" brought me back. Turns out there are gems in every Tull album.
When Thick As A Brick first came out my roommate played it so often that I finally cut the speaker wires to get some peace. I like it now and listen to it quite often.
If you want some hard rocking Jethro Tull I definitely recommend MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY !
