For the life of me I will never understand how this game didn't sell more than it did. It's the GREATEST beat 'em up of it's genre and nothing comes close. Over a hundred different ways to engage in combat and you're in charge of how you fight... what's not to love? We don't even get this much content from a game in 2024! The story isn't long winded you're literally just throwing hands and feet with a bad azz main character. Plus the biggest appeal to me is the difficulty, the payoff you get after mastering this game makes you feel like nothing else can phase you. I genuinely don't know what more could've been done to appeal to the masses maybe it was just ahead of it's time. Shinji Mikami created a masterpiece that's all I'll say. Re-release it today and I guarantee you people would lose their minds.
I wish he could somehow know that he created a game that is the favourite game of a lot of people around the globe. I'm from argentina and i love this game

As someone who has inspired and helped Suda51 grow into the creator he is today (with Suda51 calling him one of the coolest bosses ever), I will be forever grateful to this man. God Hand is also one of my favorite games of all time, too.
Wow...I had no idea that it had such a dynamic history, especially for him. I feel bad that he feels bad about making a game for himself, even though most of us know that's how you end up with a truly great game -- when a dev does what they want to do. It becomes true art. The Japanese gaming industry and anime industry never let any of there developers or directors have freedom to make what they want to make in a video game based off how the developer or director wants it to be for themselves and not caring what other people will say about it shinji kamiya knew that many of his colleagues and other people in the Japanese gaming industry would look down on him if he made this game but he didn’t care he did it for the people buying the video games and did it because he thought it was a great idea and a great game from his perspective that is why hideo kojima who is the creator and director of all the metal gear games that came out since 1987 to 2015 was fired because Konami games a group of Japanese people in the gaming industry did not let him make games the way he wanted to now he has his on gaming company and works for Sony and now he is making lots of money and sales from death stranding and I know konami is very angry about that the Japanese business companies and anime companies and video game industries try to control what they want there workers to make but some of them want to do there own thing and they won’t let them
God Hand is the best game ever made for me. When people are talking about how hard souls game are, I laugh at them and look back on my hard mode kick me god hand challenge days. Now that is what REAL difficulty is like.

There's one thing that's puzzling me: I distinctly remember old magazine previews of the game (mostly Official Playstation 2 Magazine UK, which is distinct from the US version) that framed the game as being easy, intentionally easy, from a position of mostly being played for laughs. I mean, enemies dying in a couple of strong punches. So imagine my surprise when I finally *did* play God Hand years later and it was nothing like that. But in the years since, I've *never* come across any information that tracks with that story, but I swear I'm not misremembering it. This interview kind of hops between the two; on the one hand, the notion of Mikami making something ultimately 'for him' and not driven by the market does accomodate an earlier playable build of God Hand that was easy, but the notion of it being 'his' and especially targeted at Dai makes it sound like it was hard from the outset and Capcom just wanted to screw with print media at the time. Unless, of course, the game started easy but was revised through Dai to become the niche tough-but-fair 3D brawler that it was released as.
What could be the case, God Hand was another of Capcom's releases that was made harder in the western release, specifically Japan's "Normal" mode was renamed "Easy" and Japan's "Hard" mode was renamed "Normal" (similar to the original western release of DMC3). Maybe OPS2M UK played an earlier build set to "easy" without being told what difficulty level they played, or possibly the Japanese version is easier even if you play on the same difficulty and those changes hadn't been made to the preview they played? That's a guess mind you
As a Martial Artist, its incredible the amount of detail there is in every technique, you cant find this in any other game. And this is only one of the many great things this game has...

To think that you enjoy it when you play it, and the guy that made it beats himself up to this day for making something that he truly wanted to do. I imagine myself like an anime character crying in the rain because his master died , screaming: "Sensei!" Gets heartbroken by a bad American Final Fight, to cope he made God Hand.
It's not like it's a perfect game by any means it takes a while to get a handle for it but it pays off big time. Very fun and satisfying game with lots of good humor

It's just funny now cause we know they just simply couldn't beat it, it was that petty lol. IGN about the camera in God Hand: 'One of the major problems with the combat, and God Hand on the whole in fact, is that the camera is stuck directly behind your character and you're unable to freely control it. Where you walk is exactly where it points' IGN about the same camerasystem in God of War: At some of the most tense and heartbreaking moments, the camera never leaves Kratos’ mindstate. You’re forced to sit with him - sometimes in silence, sometimes in anguish as a haunting choir echoes around him, and sometimes in relief - through every second of it. That intimacy makes those emotions all the more real and impactful So when they like the game, the camerasystem is 'intimate'. When they don't like it, it's 'stuck' :D

that is the first and the only game that give us chance to play with our own technique and style. you can beat the game with high lvl technique or just basic low technique. you can play save by staying in lvl 1-2 or if you want a challenge, you can play in lvl 3/die difficulty.

I was playing UMvC3 in mode Heroes and Heralds, I get a cart with Gene on it, so watching all cards I saw the name of the game where he comes and God Hand was a rare name to a game at least for me, so I decided to search a video on youtube of the game, more later I downloaded on my PS3 so I could play it... Was one of the best experiences on videogames of my life, that game in this years couldn't be maked because it's humor sense, and that weird way to be was the reason of why I love it, by it's gameplay the custom combos, buying moves even for those special power moves, and the difficulty, the story as simple and fun was amazing, couldn't ask for nothing better than that and makes me happy to know that a game like God Hand exists. I would like to see it in modern consoles, not necessary a remake (I'm not into the REMAKING ALL THE GAMES I LOVE people). Best games comes when devs want to make it without trying to satisfy everybody

The fact that an industry legend needs to prove himself to his company in terms of sales for projects he doesn't really feel too happy about making to at least once be able to do that which he genuinely *wants to make* , even though he knows full well it will not sell, is absolutely and completely fucked up. He is the greatest video game dev for me, not Hideo Kojima, not Shigeru Miyamoto, not Hidetaka Miyazaki, not Hideki Kamiya, not Yu Suzuki etc. For me, Shinji Mikami is a true GAME developer, the gameplay is always polished and awesome in his games. He also adds humor and makes sure that the gamers have a blast from start to end.
If any game needs to be brought out into the modern space with updated graphics and minor improvements (like maybe not having tank controls haha) its god hand. What a legendary game. So glad he made it

Dude, when you're in Die difficulty, the game is actually hard even in Normal mode. I just cant beat 3 goons without breaking my hands
Game devs should be able to make what they want. That's how you get great games and not cash grabs.

Videogames back in the day were passion projects. These days a lot of games feel so Corporate and bland.
Even back then there was pressure from the publishers for the games to make money but there was more creative freedom within those constraints.

I was playing UMvC3 in mode Heroes and Heralds, I get a cart with Gene on it, so watching all cards I saw the name of the game where he comes and God Hand was a rare name to a game at least for me, so I decided to search a video on youtube of the game, more later I downloaded on my PS3 so I could play it... Was one of the best experiences on videogames of my life, that game in this years couldn't be maked because it's humor sense, and that weird way to be was the reason of why I love it, by it's gameplay the custom combos, buying moves even for those special power moves, and the difficulty, the story as simple and fun was amazing, couldn't ask for nothing better than that and makes me happy to know that a game like God Hand exists. I would like to see it in modern consoles, not necessary a remake (I'm not into the REMAKING ALL THE GAMES I LOVE people). Best games comes when devs want to make it without trying to satisfy everybody

The fact that an industry legend needs to prove himself to his company in terms of sales for projects he doesn't really feel too happy about making to at least once be able to do that which he genuinely *wants to make* , even though he knows full well it will not sell, is absolutely and completely fucked up. This guy came into the industry to make games he would like to play ! That is LITERALLY the best kind of developer in the world !!!
He is the greatest video game dev for me, not Hideo Kojima, not Shigeru Miyamoto, not Hidetaka Miyazaki, not Hideki Kamiya, not Yu Suzuki etc.
For me, Shinji Mikami is a true GAME developer, the gameplay is always polished and awesome in his games. He also adds humor and makes sure that the gamers have a blast from start to end.
If any game needs to be brought out into the modern space with updated graphics and minor improvements (like maybe not having tank controls haha) its god hand. What a legendary game. So glad he made it

Most people didn't know this game existed and never tried, if they release god hand 2, i am pretty sure this games unic play style will impress lots of people,
The yakuza games and the north star game from the yakuza team carries this same spirit but unfortunately God hand was forgotten for many.
