How to monitor US Air Force military radio | Ham radio

- I spent two nights monitoring the US Air Force radio transmissions and also making a few ham radio contacts from a glorious new location.
The High Frequency Global Communications System (HFGCS) is a network of single sideband shortwave transmitters of the United States Air Force which is used to communicate with aircraft in flight, ground stations and some United States Navy surface assets. All worldwide receiving and transmitting sites in the HFGCS system are remotely controlled from Andrews Air Force Base and Grand Forks Air Force Base. Before 1 October 2002 it was known as the Global High Frequency System (GHFS).
The primary HFGCS voice frequencies are 4724.0 kHz, 8992.0 kHz, 11175.0 kHz, and 15016.0 kHz. In addition to the HFGCS, U.S. aircraft frequently use Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) HF stations (13927.0 kHz) and Canadian Forces HF stations (11232.0 kHz) to relay messages.
One common use for the HFGCS is to place telephone calls from the aircraft in flight by means of the Defence Switched Network (DSN) to an U.S. Air Force base. The HFGCS also carries Emergency Action Messages (EAMs). (Info from Wikipedia)

The Evac flight is a medical evacuation flight going into Naval Air Station Sigonella on the island of Sicily. There is a US Naval Hospital there. It is a nice base, been there many times. Great Video. Charlie in Virginia
Thank you
Deployed there twice :)
As a young fella and SWL I wish i had such a nice and cozy place for my hobby. Keep it up!
this set up is therapeutic
Looks like a nice, quiet spot, devoid of both noise and PEOPLE. Best wishes, Dave N9HF
I used to spend so much time listening to shortwave just trying to find weird stuff for fun, years later I enlisted to get out of poverty and now I'm USAF comm in Asia. Life is crazy.
I like the travel case for the spices, the man doesn't mess around
" Skyking, skyking, do not answer, EAM to follow"
Mainsail, mainsail calling Hickam"
Oops, were all dead now
Great glamping spot. I’ll have to take a listen to those military frequencies on my IC705. You gave me an idea for what I can make for dinner, supper, tea or whatever tonight. 73 de VO1OK
Carl, I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. I'm W0SEH in the US. I was posted at RAF Mildenhall almost twenty years ago and held call sign M0DGO while in the UK. I only monitor HF here, I mostly do 2m. 73 Steve
I used to love going to the Mildenhall airshows, unfortunately, I believe they no longer exist. 73 de Bob, M0BOB.
@@m0bob I left there in 2005. I haven’t kept up with base activities since then. The air shows were good community builders back in the day.
Yep, you'll have to go to RAF Fairford now, actually a US base currently hosting B52 bombers. It's in Gloucestershire, some distance away. 🙁
WOW I was at RAF Lakenheath back in 74 and would do flights out of Mildenhall. I worked at the Flight Surgeons office. I remember the air shows at Lakenheath AMAZING.
What a pleasant video. Thanks for uploading. The space seems cozy, if chilly, and the landscape perfect for hamming. Loved the time-lapse and the sunset, too.
I've been considering getting back into ham. I've kept my license valid. It's a General class, N5ZXX. I'm temped to use an SDR like you have in one segment of your video. I'm not sure of the quality of such a tiny radio, but they seem OK on UA-cam. Otherwise, Icom would be where I'd look, or maybe an old-school Drake receiver and Transmitter. I think tubes are still available. An antenna like yours would do me well, too.
Thanks again. I'll check out more of your videos and maybe we'll meet on-air some day.

I just happened to come across your channel today, and seen the beginning of this video. It sounds just like what I heard in the only video I have posted. I was thinking it was some kind of strange numbers station. Thank you! 73!
That is a nice little setup you have there. Makes for a cozy camping experience and a great listening place. Well done!
Yay the disco's back :-) Great vid Carl and thanks for the military radio info.
This video popped up into my UA-cam home page. Cooking, Radio and making some contacts. Made me a subscriber in one video.

Thank you
Brilliant Carl😊
Really interesting listening to those US transmissions.
Decades ago I used to listen to Looking Glass on 11.243MHz using my PRC-47 transceiver.
Excellent video, Carl. That looked like a perfect couple of days to unwind. 👍
Nice camping set up for your listening adventure.
Use to listen to this stuff 20 years ago....
Greetings again from Portland, Oregon. Thank you for the new video. Good as always ☺️ 73
Ive just purchased one of those Antennas. Hopefully put it to good use next month. Top Video as always Carl 🙂
wow nice place and an interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool, I love this hobby. Keep up the great videos.
Great vids and love your cooking preferences...keep up the great work...73 de 9H5TB
Yep, careful with snow. Often associated with low, highly charged clouds and the noise likely discharging into the rig.
Another great video! Love the lamp reminds me of nights fishing on the Thames near Tilbury!
Those are real nice lamps!
I have two antique Coleman lamps that I run on Benzine here in SV land considering I cannot get white gas here and I am also restoring an old Petromax lamp as well. Waiting for some warm nights here where I can set up a tent on the top terrace and work some HF from the QTH here.
Great concept .. ham radio and cooking. KEEP THEM COMING.. 73S FROM W5ZM.
Very cool video I like the 705 nice radio love the setup I would love to live that way

Hi Carl, hope your keeping well, lovely video, new location looks great and maybe looks a bit easier for you to play a bit of radio. Very little noise too. The 705 doing you proud on a difficult few days.

Your camp is killer , i would enjoy a spot like that my self ! I am in Tennessee and it was 75 at sundown tonight . i would rather be in the UK now . 73 my friend .
Should put some WebSDR stuff on list of useful related sites. Thanks to people that generously host a feed from their receivers, you can listen in via the internet rather than having to invest in the gear. (Having the gear is still neat, but for newbies or a casual interest - then listening via a web page is nice. Listings with those sites are also useful for DX testing to various locations if broadcasting too.)
wow what am awesume set up!
Just doing Something Simple lol..Burritos
Mince, spices Corrinder lol
Good Vid Carl 👍
Very enjoyable material and pace.
Thanks for the video
What a great video, Carl, I really enjoyed it, a lot of good information , I took a lot of notes on this one! I also like your new setup in the Peak district, looks very nice and cozy. Enjoyed your cooking segment gave me quite an appetite hi-hi. Thank you for showing how you set up your end fed antenna system, learned a few new things. All-in all this video was very interesting and informative. Thank you sharing, keep 'em coming! Oh almost forgot happy to see your Land Rover back on the road!
Very nice shack, you should try aviation listening in VHF and UHF, you seem to be in a good location fot that !
Loving the videos, food, radio and locations. Thanks for all your efforts.
Is your IC-705 sitting in a case on the table in this video? If so, what is it?
I use Peovi Carry Cage and took the handles off it so it fits into the hardcase
@@M0SZT : Was that your SDR in the small box on the back of the table? I'll look and see if you listed your gear somewhere.
Another great video Carl thanks!
9:35 YC1CLE it's an amateur radio station from Indonesia..... Great set up bro...Greeting from Indonesia
An excellent camp curry and SWL lurk with a hint of end fed and Sherman tank.
Impressive. We don’t hear that much in the states !
I am relatively new to HF listening. I mistakenly believed that HF had no military, commercial, logistics, digital satellite communication, and emergency traffic. I am just now barely becoming aware of maritime emergency frequencies, aviation communications, satellite imagery, and more! I always thought those things were VHF and UHF only.
Thank you for your service
I love watching your recordings. You could do some cookery videos as well! 73 de Bob, M0BOB.
KD6TXB Here nice setup thanks for the video interesting.
what a fantastic perspective on ham radio fun. Thanks so much for sharing this Carl. Hope to get in touch. Bill KK7IGZ
Nice radio. Very nice QTH. I have a Icom 7300 and battery pack to take in my Tundra/Fourwheel popup truck camper for mobile ops here in Wyoming,Montana and Idaho with end fed dipole. I like your fibreglass mast setup. Good idea. I may use that, Nice Land Rover. Thinking of a Icom 705 for taking in backpack for hikes up in mountains for mobile QSLs.
Another nice vlog. Enjoy & B safe. M7AHE. 73
Very kewl adventure, Carl. The countryside is beautiful. Isn’t solitude wonderful?
it looks beautiful there. great vid!
thoroughly enjoyed this mate. cheers
I'm really all new to this. How are you able to listen to this but be so far away? I thought radios only can hear up to about 40 miles away?
Awesome place to listen
I too would love to get away in my caravan. However, the family would call me selfish. Yet moan at me for being on the radio all day.... no win situation. 😆😆
That is a neat place to camp. Great video and editing. Well done 👍
Very nice, reminds me of me shack in rural Montana many years ago!
What an interesting video! Unfortunately it left me feeling starving hungry 😳
Cool beans...
Hope to catch you on 40 meters or 20 meters some day. I too only use QRP and have two of the HF Signals kit transceivers and may pick up one of the budget SDR transceivers in the near future. While I live in a small home nearly by itself in the Catskill mountains my Australian Shepard nick named Buddy & I like to find spots in the middle of nowhere to set up camping for a night weI too will bring a transceiver along with an audio book.
Take care & 73

Very Nice! I need a hut like that!

Great video, nice surroundings !
Great video Carl. Thanks.
The stuff you thought was related to the snow looks like a solar charge controller, I'm off grid and get similar but it's usually when it's really sunny and the controllers are working hard, not the other way around when there's snow.. weird. Is your XYL anti HF? That's a cute dog house/man cave.
Thank you
Great video
Thank you carl for sharing a great get away radio away from qrm is amazing and utility monitoring am thinking of getting a 705 for my self keep the coles burning 73s de 2E1DNC

Great channel, I subscribed today 👍🏻… as if I need another radio 😂now I’ve got to have a 705 …awesome rig from what I’ve seen. Your location reminds me of somewhere 007 may have held up , monitoring the air waves waiting on instructions from M.. I really do enjoy your channel, maybe we can connect sometime…KQ4KHM 🇺🇸🅰️✝️
Nice radio shack/setup. Your radio looks plugged in, do you have mains power or are you running with batteries?
Running with a battery on this trip
When You get a Good Report Try on your return over Saying thank you for the Flowers On The Report. Sounds Better..
I already have the Air Force HFGCS frequencies in my head and in radio memories. 73 de ke4obe
すばらしいシャックですね。QSO できることたのしみにしています。JL1MMM 73
Very cool!
This is off topic, but what is the brand of shirt / jacket are you wearing. Looks warm. I would like to purchase one. Thanks K7WHN
The green one is a Snugpack waterproof winter jacket, the black one is generic down jacket not an expensive one
@@M0SZT Thanks K7WHN
Word of concern to all fellow "HAMS", it may sound fun, but be responsible enough for who knows, one day all amateur frquencies may be jammed. Nothing is impossible to the military whatever country it may be. I hope it's not yet late since so many of this kinds of videos listening to military modulation have already been uploaded. Just my thoughts......
We can always use smoke signals.
You need to start up again with current issues in the world.
I want to buy a system that allows me to 1 communicate (like truckers do) and 2 hear announcements … I have no idea what it’s called, any help? Incase cell phones or satellites every go down
Superb video. Reallt helpful. After years of listening to VHF/UHF in East Anglia around the bases locally here i have just started in the last year getting HF using a RSPA1 SDR Play and using SDRUNO with a wellbrook active loop i have just installed. This is the kind of comms i have been hunting. Been listing to NAT atlantic stuff but really after this stuff as well. thanks again. How active is 11175 with your experience? had a few hits on my homemade long wire in the past. Is it busy daily?
your antenna looks interesting as well. will take a look
I’m using an IC705 with Alex loop I’m still yet to get contact on DSTAR - 73
Not able to receive 11.175. here in NewZealand anymore. Most military stations on upper side band are not received here anymore.
I would like to see more about that cabin etc.
HI, how long is your end fed antenna? Would you be able to give any more details of it - Pole / Choke etc Would be very helpful, Many Thanks
Hi there from New Zealand.Could you please sent me the model of your ICOM Transceiver and I shall look up the details of it.We do have an ICOM shop over here and Im thinking of updateing my Transceiver. Many thanks. James.
Icom 705 👍
Nice video. Thank you. Save a gas and dress warmer. Good luck. I like Icom.
Hi, out of curiosity, have you ever heard any chatter about any UFO/UAP sightings at all? It's something I'm very interested in.
Only on TV 🤷♂️
Watch those plastic spoons. They taste a bit rubbery when cooked in the kettle!
😀
HFGCS communications system. You can listen too the ALE mode communications between all AFB in Europe as Sigonella,Andrews,Diego Garcia and many others.. Sorry I don't give fréquencies it's military communications even they are encrypted. .Some years ago you could hear "XM Whales" which were transmissions between Crougthon AFB and Sigonella AFB. You can find some excerpts on You Tube . It's just creepy
Does one ever hear comms from NSA Souda Bay in Crete?
U don't give freqs? They are all well known it's not a secret, we publish military air vhf uhf daily in uk, no one cares sane as when we produced scanning directory in uk, authorities never cared, or mostly didn't
I heard various interesting phone patches including Whitehouse and us embassy israel and other things in past, there fault if they speak in the clear
surprised that cabin has electricity but no electric kettle!
What antenna setup did you use?
