The Evac flight is a medical evacuation flight going into Naval Air Station Sigonella on the island of Sicily. There is a US Naval Hospital there. It is a nice base, been there many times. Great Video. Charlie in Virginia
Great glamping spot. I’ll have to take a listen to those military frequencies on my IC705. You gave me an idea for what I can make for dinner, supper, tea or whatever tonight. 73 de VO1OK
This video popped up into my UA-cam home page. Cooking, Radio and making some contacts. Made me a subscriber in one video. 73, W4ISB Mike in Tennessee.
I am relatively new to HF listening. I mistakenly believed that HF had no military, commercial, logistics, digital satellite communication, and emergency traffic. I am just now barely becoming aware of maritime emergency frequencies, aviation communications, satellite imagery, and more! I always thought those things were VHF and UHF only.
I just happened to come across your channel today, and seen the beginning of this video. It sounds just like what I heard in the only video I have posted. I was thinking it was some kind of strange numbers station. Thank you! 73!
Carl, I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. I'm W0SEH in the US. I was posted at RAF Mildenhall almost twenty years ago and held call sign M0DGO while in the UK. I only monitor HF here, I mostly do 2m. 73 Steve
WOW I was at RAF Lakenheath back in 74 and would do flights out of Mildenhall. I worked at the Flight Surgeons office. I remember the air shows at Lakenheath AMAZING.
What a pleasant video. Thanks for uploading. The space seems cozy, if chilly, and the landscape perfect for hamming. Loved the time-lapse and the sunset, too. I've been considering getting back into ham. I've kept my license valid. It's a General class, N5ZXX. I'm temped to use an SDR like you have in one segment of your video. I'm not sure of the quality of such a tiny radio, but they seem OK on UA-cam. Otherwise, Icom would be where I'd look, or maybe an old-school Drake receiver and Transmitter. I think tubes are still available. An antenna like yours would do me well, too. Thanks again. I'll check out more of your videos and maybe we'll meet on-air some day. 73
Those are real nice lamps! I have two antique Coleman lamps that I run on Benzine here in SV land considering I cannot get white gas here and I am also restoring an old Petromax lamp as well. Waiting for some warm nights here where I can set up a tent on the top terrace and work some HF from the QTH here.
Hi Carl, hope your keeping well, lovely video, new location looks great and maybe looks a bit easier for you to play a bit of radio. Very little noise too. The 705 doing you proud on a difficult few days. 73. Jim 2E0HKM
Your camp is killer , i would enjoy a spot like that my self ! I am in Tennessee and it was 75 at sundown tonight . i would rather be in the UK now . 73 my friend .
Nice radio. Very nice QTH. I have a Icom 7300 and battery pack to take in my Tundra/Fourwheel popup truck camper for mobile ops here in Wyoming,Montana and Idaho with end fed dipole. I like your fibreglass mast setup. Good idea. I may use that, Nice Land Rover. Thinking of a Icom 705 for taking in backpack for hikes up in mountains for mobile QSLs.
Should put some WebSDR stuff on list of useful related sites. Thanks to people that generously host a feed from their receivers, you can listen in via the internet rather than having to invest in the gear. (Having the gear is still neat, but for newbies or a casual interest - then listening via a web page is nice. Listings with those sites are also useful for DX testing to various locations if broadcasting too.)
Thank you carl for sharing a great get away radio away from qrm is amazing and utility monitoring am thinking of getting a 705 for my self keep the coles burning 73s de 2E1DNC
Cool beans... Hope to catch you on 40 meters or 20 meters some day. I too only use QRP and have two of the HF Signals kit transceivers and may pick up one of the budget SDR transceivers in the near future. While I live in a small home nearly by itself in the Catskill mountains my Australian Shepard nick named Buddy & I like to find spots in the middle of nowhere to set up camping for a night weI too will bring a transceiver along with an audio book. Take care & 73 De kc2wvb
What a great video, Carl, I really enjoyed it, a lot of good information , I took a lot of notes on this one! I also like your new setup in the Peak district, looks very nice and cozy. Enjoyed your cooking segment gave me quite an appetite hi-hi. Thank you for showing how you set up your end fed antenna system, learned a few new things. All-in all this video was very interesting and informative. Thank you sharing, keep 'em coming! Oh almost forgot happy to see your Land Rover back on the road!
The stuff you thought was related to the snow looks like a solar charge controller, I'm off grid and get similar but it's usually when it's really sunny and the controllers are working hard, not the other way around when there's snow.. weird. Is your XYL anti HF? That's a cute dog house/man cave.
i will listen out for you on 20m im on every night from vk3 i work many on 20 m running low power in the uk i get big pile ups.i will put a few calls out on 20m for you .i run on 14.215mhz
I want to buy a system that allows me to 1 communicate (like truckers do) and 2 hear announcements … I have no idea what it’s called, any help? Incase cell phones or satellites every go down
Word of concern to all fellow "HAMS", it may sound fun, but be responsible enough for who knows, one day all amateur frquencies may be jammed. Nothing is impossible to the military whatever country it may be. I hope it's not yet late since so many of this kinds of videos listening to military modulation have already been uploaded. Just my thoughts......
HFGCS communications system. You can listen too the ALE mode communications between all AFB in Europe as Sigonella,Andrews,Diego Garcia and many others.. Sorry I don't give fréquencies it's military communications even they are encrypted. .Some years ago you could hear "XM Whales" which were transmissions between Crougthon AFB and Sigonella AFB. You can find some excerpts on You Tube . It's just creepy
U don't give freqs? They are all well known it's not a secret, we publish military air vhf uhf daily in uk, no one cares sane as when we produced scanning directory in uk, authorities never cared, or mostly didn't
Hi there from New Zealand.Could you please sent me the model of your ICOM Transceiver and I shall look up the details of it.We do have an ICOM shop over here and Im thinking of updateing my Transceiver. Many thanks. James.
Loving the videos, food, radio and locations. Thanks for all your efforts. Is your IC-705 sitting in a case on the table in this video? If so, what is it?
Why not insulate your “radio shack” and put an electric baseboard heater in there? It’s better than freezing your nutsack off. Or an even better idea, move your “radio shack” into the fodder room, insulate it, and run power to it to have electric heat, and power for the radios.
Can someone give me a few military frequencies to listen to in California? I'm new to HAM and I'm finding out alot of the analog frequencies I save on my device, end up listening to digital transmissions, so I don't hear much of anything. I carry a Motorola Mototrbo UHF with me in my car everyday, but I also have an ICOM at home, any UHF, HF or VHF frequencies would be fine. I would really like to listen to what's going on. Thanks!

Deployed there twice :)
I like the travel case for the spices, the man doesn't mess around
That is a nice little setup you have there. Makes for a cozy camping experience and a great listening place. Well done!
Decades ago I used to listen to Looking Glass on 11.243MHz using my PRC-47 transceiver.
Looks like a nice, quiet spot, devoid of both noise and PEOPLE. Best wishes, Dave N9HF

I used to love going to the Mildenhall airshows, unfortunately, I believe they no longer exist. 73 de Bob, M0BOB.
@@m0bob I left there in 2005. I haven’t kept up with base activities since then. The air shows were good community builders back in the day.
Yep, you'll have to go to RAF Fairford now, actually a US base currently hosting B52 bombers. It's in Gloucestershire, some distance away. 🙁

Yep, careful with snow. Often associated with low, highly charged clouds and the noise likely discharging into the rig.
