While is designed to be capable of embarking the F-35B, the Izumo has not (to date) ever embarked fixed wing aircraft.
Destroyers main role was to destroy torpedo motorboats while being seaworthy so it can go with the bigger ships anywhere they go. The most expendable long range ship within the fleet (excluding coastal defense boats).
@@Paciat That might be true in WWI. It is not true today and it is not even particularly true in WWII. DDs like the Gearings and Akitzukis are very much mainstay AA screen platforms mounting 6~8 flak batteries and more 25~40mm mounts than you can count with ASW as a secondary role. -- The modern destroyer is taking on the role of the Battleships of yore. They are the primary surface-to-surface platform as well as the most heavily armed, most survivable, surface-to-air assets in a modern navy. There is no longer distinct cruiser class in a modern navy per say; at least not in the classic sense of having an 6"~8" gun, some arbitrary displacement or whatever characteristics. The US Navy calls the Ticonderoga a cruiser when it can just as well call it a destroyer. The same can be said of the Kirov or the Zumwalt. The classic role of the destroyer is now shouldered by ships called "frigates" although there is also no clear distinction between FFGs and DDGs in terms of armament, size or any particular characteristics. Motorboat defense is now the role of the Corvettes, Missile Gunboats, Patrol Boats, Littoral "Clusterfuck" Ships of what have you. -- The Japanese are the only ones calling a purpose built flat top aviation ship a destroyer though. These things have no significant gun or missile armament other than point defense weapons. They don't even carry much ship-board ASW gear like towed arrays. They purpose is to embark and fly aircrafts.

They are small aircraft carriers like those the US Marines use. The only difference is that the landing surface hasn’t been hardened get. Once it is hardened then the Izumo Class can handle F35Bs.
Meanwhile in Russia: You see Sam, ours is not aircraft carrier. Looks like one, but it fires cruise missiles. America: But where is the cruise missile? I don't see it. All I see is an aircraft parked on the flat top. *Random hatch from the flight deck opens, flips an aircraft overboard, and cruise missile flies out* See Sam, once again, this is not an aircraft carrier. It is a cruiser.
@@dagger6467 Not hardly. The Wasp class is quite a bit larger and much different design. The America class is closer in aspect to the Izumo, in that neither of them have a well deck. The Izumo is 27,000 tons full loaded and America is 45,000 tons full loaded.
@@dundonrl You're wrong. The Wasp class does have a well deck so do your research. LCACs (vice one LCAC in the LHAs). Well Deck Capacity: 3 LCAC or 2 LCU or 6 LC... Date deployed: July 29, 1989 (USS Wasp) Flight Deck Width: 140 feet (42.6 meters). Now you look foolish.

LHD1 to 7 are basically the same ships (minus the Bonhomme Richard, she's being scrapped right now) with the Makin Island LHD-8 having gas turbines instead of steam boilers for her main propulsion. The America class was designed without a well-deck, but larger aviation spaces with LHA-6 and LHA-7 being that flight. LHA-8 will have a smaller well deck due to the Marines needing to be able to carry heavier equipment ashore than can be handled by aviation assets. SO... With neither the Izumo or America class having a well deck they are closer to each other than the Wasp class and Izumo. Oh.. the flight deck isn't 140 ft wide, that's the overall width from the edge of the port elevator to the starboard elevator. The flight deck itself is about 106 ft wide (the beam of the ship) and to go through the Panama Canal, they fold the elevators and remove the catwalks.
It's a light carrier or escort carrier in all but name. Warships of any type can be used defensively or offensively. Just as a sword can be used to defend or attack. It's the nature of the beast.
Kaga, Izumo, Suryo... We call it the Kido Butai Its definitely self-defense against subs Yes, those f-35's are very good anti sub We had to make sure, the ocean might be filled with enemy subs!
Put it simply, because their post WW2 laws (Japanese constitution and multilateral treaty after WW2 surrender) prohibits them to have an aircraft carrier. Simple solution ? build an aircraft carrier and call it "Destroyer that capable carrying fixed wing aircraft and helicopter" just like UK with their Invincible class "Cruiser", it looks like an aircraft carrier, operate like an aircraft carrier, but legally called an "Aircraft Carrying Cruiser"
I think that Japan will ultimately build a “dedicated” aircraft carrier. The next stage might be something similar to either a Juan Carlos (Spain)/Canberra(Australia) type ship with a ski jump or like the Cavour (Italy) aircraft carrier (also with a ski jump). The next step after that might be something similar to the UK’s Queen Elizabeth carrier (also with a ski jump).
@@marishkagranada7985 Not realistic for a nation that barely got greenlit to make carriers after years. They should go for a Queen Elizabeth style ship, best you can get in terms of conventional (non nuclear) carriers (ironically it is far from conventional).
Ever since the end of the WW2, the loudest opponent to any plans to expand Japan's military, or self-defense as they like to put it, capabilities is Japan's own population. Some other countries just needed to declare void any international stipulations to do what they want, but that's not an option if it's your own population who rejects the ideas. Not calling the Izumo class ships aircraft carriers might also be a domestic political issue.
This ship will be a stepping stone, it opens the door for larger and more capable flat tops, whatever they want to label them. For example, the old Invincible class of the RN were initially labelled 'through deck cruisers' when carriers were a naughty word to politicians at that time.

I don’t agree with your contention the Izumo class isn’t the equal to the Russian or Chinese carriers. When loaded with F-35s and Osprey they will be superior. The F-35 is a far superior aircraft than what is flying from the Russian or the first two Chinese carries. It more than makes up for the fact the Japanese carriers are smaller in size. That probably won’t be the case when China has their third carrier up and operational but that could be up to a decade from now.
um... they are installing the island on the third chinese carrier soon, the one with CATOBAR. it will not take a decade for it to be in service. still theyre outnumbered severely by the us and its allies
Nick the Chinese will be christening their third carrier this year or next. However just like with American carriers it takes 3-4 years to fit out and do the work ups before it’s commissioned. Even then a new class will often take another couple of years before it’s fully up to speed. Conventional wisdom is it will take China upward of a decade to get carrier 3 into full service. They have no experience with a carrier this big or complex.
This is similar to Germany post WW1. Japan kept (fleet) aircraft carrier tech alive by overbuilding the ships to what they ostensibly needed to be for helicopters...But perfect for conversion into a true carrier, as they now will be.
In a way, Interwar Japan followed similar trends with the Washington Naval Treaty back then -- morphing the Mogami-class from a light to a heavy cruiser by swapping her main guns as soon as the country dropped out of the Treaty (and then giving Mogami's old main batteries to Yamato as secondary armaments).
How’s India going to handle new carriers when they can’t even handle their CoV situation properly, in view of thousands already dead and many more following. They are in a ridiculous mine field already, where corpses were thrown into the Ganges.!, explain that.

Remember. The official status of the Izumo class is a “destroyer”, to go around the loophole in Japan’s constitution about not having aircraft carriers due to their mostly aggressive usage. Something Japan’s done a lot recently to expand their military.
According to the official website of Japan's Ministry of Defense, the only weapons prohibited by the Japanese Constitution are nuclear weapons mounted on long-range missiles, and owning an aircraft carrier is not considered a violation of the Constitution. I think it is more like a gentleman's agreement.
@@EternalGaming786 The US didn’t place that constitution. The Japanese could have kept a traditional army in their constitution. But they themselves chose not to due to what I can assume to be guilt.
@@EternalGaming786 well tbh, if they shouldn't be USA puppet, then what would they be? create a new faction? Big nono, already bad reputation. Both already estabilish a mutual relationship, they need each other to face PRC's aggression

If Japan seriously builds an aircraft carrier, it will be on par with Ronald Reagan. Now I'm renovating the escort ships Izumo and Kaga into aircraft carriers, but I'm looking forward to it.
No, it won’t because the only real propulsion solution for a carrier that size is nuclear, and Japan won’t go that route. It would be more likely to be similar to the Queen Elizabeth class carrier, perhaps the originally designed CATOBAR version to allow a bit more flexibility
No, I think the definitions and roles are pretty clear. It's sophistry and word play that creates the grey areas. A pre-emptive strike is starting a war, as there is no real proof that the enemy would have attacked first. It could have been posturing of a bluff.
These ships have always been funny to me. Yes, this is a destroyer. No, it is not an aircraft carrier, we’re not allowed to have aircraft carriers. Please ignore the fact that it has a full-length flight deck and weighs more than most of the fleet carriers we started WWII with.
There is another need for Izumo and Kaga to install the F-35B If a stealth aircraft arrives during island defense, Okinawa's AWACS will be forced to retreat, and at the same time there is a risk that the defense line of the fighter unit performing HAVCAP will be lowered. For this reason, the Ministry of Defense may carry out fleet air defense by Fast-FAC using the CEC of the Aegis ship and F-35B in order to prevent the situation where air power cannot be used for the operation to recapture the remote islands by the JMSDF. , And is expected by military experts. from Japanese military fan.
Only if you'd argue that the best defense is offense. A navy never leaving its home waters has no need for mobile airfields when land-based airfields cover the same range. This is why for the past couple decades, aircraft carriers have always been associated with projecting power abroad.
Imagine what a truly modern designed and built battleship would be capable of. No big cannons obviously. Perfected railguns maybe. It would have to have more offensive and defensive weapons, more range speed and firepower than any aircraft carrier.
I personally would like the world to move on from ww2. Japan is wonderful country a great ally to its friends and has shown it’s true to its word. Japan like all nations shouldn’t have to dance around classifying stuff just because of the past/political crap.
The Japanese public is a challege itself. Even after 1991, changing Article 9 will have riots in the streets. The Japanese rather see JSDF as just another fire and rescue team instead of military

"There are aircraft that are capable of strike mission, can offense, the ship is obviously an offensive aircraft carrie-" "No no, No no no. Say with me, "helicopter destroyer" "
*Everything* can be made into an offensive weapon; JSDF fighters could attack China or Russia if the really wanted.
--
The modern destroyer is taking on the role of the Battleships of yore.
--
The Japanese are the only ones calling a purpose built flat top aviation ship a destroyer though. These things have no significant gun or missile armament other than point defense weapons. They don't even carry much ship-board ASW gear like towed arrays. They purpose is to embark and fly aircrafts.
@@Paciat that role was handled by Corvette now.

Japan: Well yes... but actually no
They are small aircraft carriers like those the US Marines use. The only difference is that the landing surface hasn’t been hardened get. Once it is hardened then the Izumo Class can handle F35Bs.
You mean amphibious assault ships
Meanwhile in Russia:
You see Sam, ours is not aircraft carrier. Looks like one, but it fires cruise missiles.
America: But where is the cruise missile? I don't see it. All I see is an aircraft parked on the flat top.
*Random hatch from the flight deck opens, flips an aircraft overboard, and cruise missile flies out*

The Izumo Class is very similar to the US Navy’s Wasp Class ship.
They are similar because Japan have agreements with US fabricants.
It is a direct copy that has been upgraded. We gave them the plans and technicals and walla! The Izumo class.

Flight Deck Width: 140 feet (42.6 meters). Now you look foolish.
@@dagger6467 I spent 5 years (April 13 1993 till April 13 1998 serving on the USS Essex LHD-2 which is a Wasp class) I earned my ESWS pin on board (Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist) which is a general knowledge from the top of mast to the keel, from the bow to the stern, so yeah, I know A LITTLE bit about them.
Its a good looking little ship.
Everybody: this is an Aircraft Carrier
Japan: actually, this is a new type of Destroyers we are introducing to the world! Yey! Woohoo!🙋🏻♂️
They deserve this, everyone back then wanted an empire so I think in this day and age they should have aircraft carriers
It's a light carrier or escort carrier in all but name. Warships of any type can be used defensively or offensively. Just as a sword can be used to defend or attack. It's the nature of the beast.
Kaga, Izumo, Suryo...
We call it the Kido Butai
Its definitely self-defense against subs
Yes, those f-35's are very good anti sub
We had to make sure, the ocean might be filled with enemy subs!
Put it simply, because their post WW2 laws (Japanese constitution and multilateral treaty after WW2 surrender) prohibits them to have an aircraft carrier.
Simple solution ? build an aircraft carrier and call it "Destroyer that capable carrying fixed wing aircraft and helicopter"
just like UK with their Invincible class "Cruiser", it looks like an aircraft carrier, operate like an aircraft carrier, but legally called an "Aircraft Carrying Cruiser"
Good for japan to counter chinese.. actually it is a aircraft carrier bcoz of F35 VERTICAL LANDING... GO GO JAPAN... FROM PHILIPPINEs
My brother is on the DDH-183 had already underwent work to accommodate F-35B
I think that Japan will ultimately build a “dedicated” aircraft carrier. The next stage might be something similar to either a Juan Carlos (Spain)/Canberra(Australia) type ship with a ski jump or like the Cavour (Italy) aircraft carrier (also with a ski jump). The next step after that might be something similar to the UK’s Queen Elizabeth carrier (also with a ski jump).
Those carriers look ugly.. I hope Japan would build similar to nimitz and ford class supercarriers.
@@marishkagranada7985 Not realistic for a nation that barely got greenlit to make carriers after years. They should go for a Queen Elizabeth style ship, best you can get in terms of conventional (non nuclear) carriers (ironically it is far from conventional).
Nice videos. Keep it up 👌
Ever since the end of the WW2, the loudest opponent to any plans to expand Japan's military, or self-defense as they like to put it, capabilities is Japan's own population. Some other countries just needed to declare void any international stipulations to do what they want, but that's not an option if it's your own population who rejects the ideas. Not calling the Izumo class ships aircraft carriers might also be a domestic political issue.
Yes, GHQ has made the procedure of constitutional revision very difficult, and there are many obstacles now.
This ship will be a stepping stone, it opens the door for larger and more capable flat tops, whatever they want to label them. For example, the old Invincible class of the RN were initially labelled 'through deck cruisers' when carriers were a naughty word to politicians at that time.
A country that had 28 aircraft carriers over 80 years ago.
Excellent analysis of this class. You have a new sub!
I trust Japan more to have aircraft carriers than China
well the RN Invincible class carrier were designated as Through deck cruiser at first .
Russia call theirs heavy aviation guided missile cruiser due to Bosphorus.
I do hope japan make a return to a fleet air arm like the UK it would be really cool too if they named the ships after historical carriers

@@NickThePilotUSA yes they have had the majority of the large systems removed really only the short range and point defense systems left
With antiship cruise and hypersonic missile, it makes more sense to have smaller carriers flanked by cruisers and destroyers.
This is similar to Germany post WW1. Japan kept (fleet) aircraft carrier tech alive by overbuilding the ships to what they ostensibly needed to be for helicopters...But perfect for conversion into a true carrier, as they now will be.
deja vu?
In a way, Interwar Japan followed similar trends with the Washington Naval Treaty back then -- morphing the Mogami-class from a light to a heavy cruiser by swapping her main guns as soon as the country dropped out of the Treaty (and then giving Mogami's old main batteries to Yamato as secondary armaments).

I was part of the American team spraying the Thermal Coating on the deck.
No, it won’t because the only real propulsion solution for a carrier that size is nuclear, and Japan won’t go that route. It would be more likely to be similar to the Queen Elizabeth class carrier, perhaps the originally designed CATOBAR version to allow a bit more flexibility

There is another need for Izumo and Kaga to install the F-35B
If a stealth aircraft arrives during island defense, Okinawa's AWACS will be forced to retreat, and at the same time there is a risk that the defense line of the fighter unit performing HAVCAP will be lowered.
For this reason, the Ministry of Defense may carry out fleet air defense by Fast-FAC using the CEC of the Aegis ship and F-35B in order to prevent the situation where air power cannot be used for the operation to recapture the remote islands by the JMSDF. , And is expected by military experts.

Your intial statement "an aircraft carrier is offensive" is incorrect.
Only if you'd argue that the best defense is offense. A navy never leaving its home waters has no need for mobile airfields when land-based airfields cover the same range. This is why for the past couple decades, aircraft carriers have always been associated with projecting power abroad.
