    I'd say this motherboard is far below the socket 2011 motherboards you've reviewed in terms of quality. I'd pay the extra $20-30 for either of the LGA2011 boards if I want to get on the budget Xeon bandwagon.

      Necro Spencer and that extra is not that much overall. I think really, as Phil said, the value of 1356 is about cheap 6 cores and 12 threads, but not anything beyond that. Want more cores? Just get yourself a 2011 mobo, you get so much more stuff for your money and 8 cores are super affordable.

    Those Xeons are impressive for their age. My i5-4690k is starting to show its age in some newer titles. Stuff like DOOM (2016) and Forza are fine, though. The Vulkan and DX12 APIs seem to push my GPU harder and the 4 core CPU is still good enough @4.1Ghz.
    Where the 4 cores really struggle are in Ubisoft open-world games like Watchdogs 2. It gets choked on geometry draw-calls. To hit 60fps consistently, I have to lower the geometry settings a notch or two.

    I went with an X5670 ($19), with 24gb of ecc ram running in triple channel($35, used server ram, eBay auction), and a cheap used motherboard($28), but yeah, the results are pretty much the same, and less than 100 bucks.
    I got a nice used cooler for just $10, a 240gb ssd for $24, and now all that's left is snipping a good deal on a used RX480 8gb, the whole rig should come in just under $200. Hopefully I'll have it up and running by the end of the month.
    It should be able to play pretty much everything in high/ultra settings at 1080p/60+fps (except maybe PUBG, that game is just horribly unoptimized).
    And it'll pay for itself in video editing work.
    Future upgrades for the same computer:
    -PCIe X16 NVMe adapter and 1TB NVMe SSD(non bootable, but can be defaulted to for all programs to be installed on it, and having the video files being edited on that drive will make everything faster as well)
    -PCIe X4 USB 3.1 Gen2 adapter (will make getting files from the camera to the computer MUCH faster)

    Thank you for your review. I am having big pleasure listening you. It is good that your are showing the power consumption, as it is not common for most tech observers. Maybe here also would be good to add few words about the efficiency for your power supply, as final power consumption is very dependent of PSU. Some less experienced viewers could take it wrong thinking that values of power consumption you show is what only CPU and mobo use, missing the fact that PSU itself can consume from 5% to 40% of power. And due to this real CPU`s TDP under max load actually corresponds to official spec. paper.

    Thanks for a wonderful video and here are some comments from my testing. I'm using the 8 core E5-2450v2 and if I stress test (prime95) the 8 cores withOUT hyperthreading; it hits the 95w tdp limit. Thus, it may be worthwhile to turn off HT for gaming. Also, it would be useful to prevent core-parking (speed throttling at idle). The difference in idle power usage for me was 15.5 watts with 8 cores full speed (2.9 Ghz) and 12.3 watts (8 cores but with idling). Hopefully this can help micro-stuttering as the LGA1356 chips just lack the max single thread IPC due to their limited 95W tdp max.

X5650-20 bucks max. Sometimes 10 dollars. The problem is you can't find the motherboards for cheap. Incredible deal if you can find a good motherboard.

( for games mind you) for the average gamer, there is almost no reason to spend 200-300 on a cpu, 150 on a mobo, and 150 on pricy ddr4 .... unless you just have no budget concerns, but seriously the used market is great right now, and im very impressed with how well older hardware still holds its own in todays current market

  • @batman9592
    @batman9592 5 років тому +2

    TDP is what your Cooler must handle and how much airflow your case needs etc, it has nothing to do with power consumption at the wall. You CAN trust the rated TDP of a component. That's why you see those power meters for sale in stores, especially in countries with high power prices. You will also notice it's warm in their houses and the heated floor is on in the laundry.

    Regarding the wattage and TDP, you should explain that TDP is for amount of heat generated by processor and has nothing to do with actual power consumption of processor. This is why you have TDP ratings on coolers for example Max Wraith has TDP of 95W meaning it's ok to cool cpus that have TDP

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  5 років тому

      Yea but that TDP is totally inaccurate. A 80W CPU, 50c on CPU and VRM, whereas a 95W TDP CPU 90+ and VRM over 125C, then shutting off machine. That was the point I was trying to make :) Whereas the power meter showed a much more accurate picture of what was going on.
