Hey Tim, just wanted to pop in and tell you how much we enjoy your videos. Really liked the narrated ones where you talk about points of interest along the way. We live in a tiny seaside town on the west coast of BC, Canada and watch the tugs bring barges and log booms by our place all the time. Mostly towing behind, but not always. The benefit of the narrated videos is the ability to understand the dialog without having it buried by the ambietn sound - that said though, the ambient sound is good to have. Thanks for doing what you do and opening your world up to those of us who have an interest, but would never otherwiase see it. Cheers!

When not dodging a pandemic, I typically drive up the turnpike each day past Port Elizabeth and have always been facinated by the logistics around container ships etc. And then my office in Jersey City overlooks the Hudson where I have probably seen you at some point pushing something around. So to learn more about what goes on is fascinating, and happy to be able to support via Patreon.

Sailing past my soon to be alma mata - Marist College in Poughkeepsie NY located adjacent to the Midhudson Bridge. I found out about this college from my dad from one of his journeys as a Merchant Marine, taking the same route, many years ago. A shipmate told him "about a small college in Poughkeepsie NY right beside the Hudson". This video is very special to me and will remain so for the rest of my life. My dad passed away many years ago & won't be there to see me graduate. He was a poor kid from "the north end of the east bay (Warren RI).My dream on graduation day was to see a tug or a bulk carrier going southbound when I was given my degree. You made this dream a reality just 8 weeks before graduation through this channel. This brought me to tears, especially when you were Brooklyn bound. My grandpa was a stevedore along the waterfront. The next time you're sailing down the Hudson, and you see someone waving from the shore with an English bulldog, it's me waving thank you and be safe. Again, many thanks to you.

    Nice one captan,
It’s great to see a true boater at work. Typically quiet and no fuss from a skilled mariner. “Sail the boat and not the chart” my old skipper always said.
Now I’m a retired airline captains , The adage still stands ‘ 1 Aviate 2 Navigate 3 Comunicate. In that order. It’s plain to see that in operation.
You give me the chance to see the working life I once nearly followed.

As a Brit l have just found your channel. Great stuff, including your cool choice of music. Fascinating to see a tug at work, especially when you are in push mode, have not seen it in the UK even though l spend a lot of time on duty in Portsmouth harbour. We have about 7 or 8 tugs but they are used to assist warships (yes, we still have a few) entering or leaving harbour. Some commercial traffic is assisted. In high winds the commercial traffic has mandatory assistance. The entrance to the harbour is only about 250 yards wide and the tidal race pretty viscous.
Keep the videos coming, l learn something on each one and the views are spectacular!

Some interesting notes about the bridges on this trip, the northern bridge at Poughkeepsie is a former rail bridge built in 1889, since converted into a walk and bike path called Walkway Over The Hudson. The Bear Mountain Bridge you might notice, is only a suspension bridge for the section between the towers, there are no suspension cables supporting the sections between the tower and shore.

Thanks for the video...it brought back memories from my tour on the USCGC Sturgeon Bay, out of Bayonne, NJ, 2002-2004, breaking ice up the Hudson. We berthed for many a nights at the Kingston fuel dock. I usually relieved the morning watch before getting u/w so he could grab chow. Occasionally, I'd hear some tug Captains calling on the VHF to say they're fast in the ice, and just rode out the night, so I'd call back and get their location and tell them we'd be down to bust them out soon! It was always neat to feel that big Fairbanks Morse "hooked up" and crushing through the ice close aboard and wake them loose. Fair winds! Doug USCG Ret.

The fact that pax trains run on the east side of the Hudson and freight runs on the west side is due to competition between the NY Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad, which paralleled each other's routes, each to steal traffic from the other. The Government made them stop that practice, but the bonus remained: CSX and AMTRAK have exclusive routes northbound from the NY Metro Region.

As far as monetizing I recommend Sailing Uma as they are the Gold Standard in how to do a UA-cam Channel. They are pure play whereas you have an employer so I can see the conflict tho of course too. Very much appreciate your courage in even trying this in the first place! Big Tractor Power is another pure play UA-cam and maybe more like what you're trying to get at but it's all what you make of course too. Look forward to recommending your channel as such and stay safe.
