I hear what you are saying; I have a lot of books like that, the concepts are great but no matter how good the details are, the story overall does not gel.
Breakaway Station! Great reviews. I can't read the older stuff because of "cheesy dialog". BTW: Extro (Alfred Bester). DNF'd at page 4. I wrote a review on GR if you're interested. Love the channel.
Nice one, I don't think I've read this one. I've only just finished reading a novel that made me ask the same question. "What did i just read?" haha.. sounds interesting though
This is the first SF novel I ever read, though I did read countless short stories in the field by this point. Like you, I wasn't blown away by it, but I did remember it being good enough to leave me looking for more by this author. I think it was the ideas in it that I most liked. He was much better in several other novels
@@sfwordsofwonder I forgot to say that I read that book 30 years ago. Sorry for not clarifying that. It was the book that was responsible for getting me interested in SF novels, so I have a soft spot for it. Before The Embedding, the only SF I read were short stories, by Bradbury, Matheson, Ellison, Aldiss - they were my go-to short story writers...
Great review as always. I've read some Ian Watson short stories that I also found pretty confusing. On the other hand, I can definitely recommend his later novel Oracle, which combines an intriguing time travel premise with political thriĺler. I love the cover design for The Moon Pool!
Dude your summary of the plot sounded super interesting, too bad the author couldn't convey the story in a coherent way! It sounds like this story and these ideas told by Alastair Reynolds woulda been dope
sounds wak. i appreciated that you covered the prose and khans
Thanks for reviewing this book as I’ve been looking for a copy.
Love the cover art.
I love SF books around 250/300 pages, i always get demotivated when i want to read something around 800+ pages
Great video, as per usual.

Yeah, at least this one had the ideas, and some disturbing scenes that will also stick with me for a while. 🥴
Oh wow! Perfect. Watching now. I own this and have never gotten around to reading it. ✅
Hmm 🤔 😂 - I hate 🧀 cheese dialogue so ...... Pass.
Great video 👍
Haha, saw your first comment and was waiting for this reaction.

"I pee'd in a tumbler and forced it down his throat." Oh, Bester...

It was interesting, that's for sure.

Wow, this would have been pretty deep and mind blowing for a first SF read, great job. Yes, I'm definitely going to look for more from Watson.

Thanks for the recommendation Robin, yeah I felt like he was really on to something in this one. I'll be on the lookout for Oracle.

It was pretty ambitus for a first novel, but it really had some potential.
