Absolutely loved this the first time I saw it. Percy Shaw was wonderful in my eyes so long ago. Alan Wicker I feel just adored his unvarnished presence throughout. Probably will never forget him, the mention of him on BBC tonight 03/03/2019 on the #AntiquesRoadshow brought him right back. I've put the link on Twitter so you may get some hits from that. The story of his labourer father bringing up the family on £1 one pound a week stands out "he were rich, aye rich, his family loved him so!" 😍💖 Going to London in his youth on a single gold sovereign (that alone dates him) but he got "dinner, bed & 5 course breakfast and int mornin we got turned out into her orchard to fill our pockets with fruit for the journey. All for one shilling!" You couldn't make it up. Total gem. Mr Percy Shaw OBE for being you and for every life saved bless you and thanks! 👏💐
I remember watching this at school in the mid 70s - never forgot it for some reason. I like the beginning - Whicker on an aeroplane when a plane-flight was something to look forward to!
Yorkshire born , Yorkshire bred, genuine person, gentle smile with a twinkle, don't make em like that anymore. i can still remember their like, J B Priestley comes to mind.
I lived opposite the works in the New Delight Inn and saw him regularly passing in his Rolls. That car started a life long admiration eventually acquiring one n 1981 but cost a lot more than the £13,000 quoted in the film
even though I'm a Yorkshire man I didn't know that the eyes had been the idea of a fellow Yorkshire man and the eyes are still made 20 mins from my town of Barnsley. Great man this area is full of quiet men like percy.
Alan Whicker was not 43 when this was made in 1968- he gave his birth year as 1925- but he was actually born in 1921. You only have to look at his military career in WW2 to know that 1925 was just not correct. I can remember we discussed this programme when it was broadcast, in our class at school- Alan Whicker's programmes were a "must see" part of TV- he was our window on the world for years.
It's weird how we remember good tv shows that stick with us for many years. I have been looking for this for over 40 years.
