we still play/play again 4th edition. As a forever DM its my favorite edition to run (started with AD&D). Love the encounter creation, running the monsters/npc but also the tools we have today . Automation via Fantasy Grounds, Character creation tool (not as easy to get nowadays) online encounter building tool.

4e is still BY FAR my favorite edition (I started in 3rd) to both run and play. I miss it so much but it's hard to get a group together for it these days.

I started with the first edition of D&D. I had a lengthy hiatus and didn't play again until 2018 when my daughter asked if I could DM a game for her. So I jumped into, and enjoyed 5th edition. But when I saw your earlier videos on 4th edition I was amazed! If I had come back to D&D while that coming out, I would still be running with that edition.

I missed this - great overview and how I pine for the days of 4e. One day I am going to write a campaign in 4e.

I was able to find the core 4e books. Some of my players said they are willing to give it a try. Also I already owned Keep on the Shadowfell so I had the starter set all along lol. After we finish up the Curse of Strahd 5e campaign. I'll run this and maybe some homebrew. Eventually I think I want to track down the 4E Dark Sun books and do a 4E Dark Sun campaign. But every thing I have studied on 4E I love. This might end up being my fav edition. Wont know until Ive played them all. Lol

Glad you are enjoying what you see in 4e.
If you are after physical copies of 4e Dark Sun, Noble Knight Games has some in near mint condition. Not cheap though. If you do plan to make a purchase, you can help out my channel in the process by using this link... www.nobleknight.com/P/2147434470/Dark-Sun-Campaign-Setting?awid=1288
DriveThruRPG has PDFs and you can even get a softcover reprint of Dark Sun for 4e for $20... www.drivethrurpg.com/product/129293/Dark-Sun-Campaign-Setting-4e?affiliate_id=3534523
      Best of luck with it.

For me, what 4e did best and is still the best at, is what it did for the DM side of things. The DMs toolbox has never been easier to use than in 4e and no RPG since has done it as well. The EXP budget system that you spend to assemble encounters with varied monsters and traps and terrain features and skill challenges is immaculate and I've never had an easier time as a DM than in 4e. Monster stat blocks gave them so many interesting and varied powers and abilities, especially in the later half of the edition's life, and the DM guides had such amazing advice for adding templates and class levels and even just making brand new monsters. The minion, common, elite, solo spread was a godsend. I honestly can not fathom why no other RPG has ever been able to fashion such an organized and well balanced encounter and campaign construction system. It made the meta of being a DM every bit as enjoyable as the meta for players and I used to read through the monster manuals for fun.

Great break down. I got a good deal on the core books for 4e but haven't had a chance to run anything yet.

I love the comment section here, seeing so many people enjoying 4th Edition.
It's great. Making me want to find a group for it.

D&D Encounters during 4e was by far my favorite public play experience. Why they ditched that format is beyond me.

Agreed. I didn't realize how amazing it was until I had played 5e for a while and then went back to 4e.
5e is built for the players. 4e was made for the DMs.

that's how I started playing D&D ! It was somewhat rough, with strangers rotating in and out, but I loved it, and knew that one day I was going to DM myself. I am now forever DM - be careful what you wish for lmao

@@BurghezulDjentilom Yeah, for real. That was the first public play style event where I actually made friends that I hung out with apart from the event. And yeah, we'd switch off who ran each week's session.

I attended one of those once! Sadly was uncomfortable with playing femme PCs in public at the time, so I played a generic elf ranger man. We were up against a white dragon, and I got the MVP or whatever award for that session! Peppering a dragon with arrows was pretty awesome. My group had a younger brother and sister, and we all lost it when the girl said "Suck you!" to her older brother. xD

I hope you are more comfortable playing whatever character you want now. I love hearing all the different experiences that everyone has had with the game.

It’s very strange that intelligence could apply directly to armor class… but I loved early levels in this game so much.

    • @oldegreybeard
      @oldegreybeard  Рік тому +3

If you view armor class less about physical defense and more as the sum of your ability to avoid taking damage, then I think it can work. High DEX means you are the athlete that has natural ability to get out of the way. High INT means you are well versed in tactics and can better anticipate what your enemy will do. IE. You know when to duck. 😀

ya, for sure. For a class like warlord it makes sense. But old ass wizards were matrix dodging back there. :P@@oldegreybeard

Started in 3.5, loved 4e, have long standing beef with PF for validating 3.5 purists from even giving 4e a fair shake. Now I'm exhausted with 5e and wish to return to 4e, as both a player and as a Forever GM. 4e doesnt deserve the hate it gets.

Fourth edition is the only edition of DND that I would play at this point. All the other editions , the stuff they do I can think of games that do it better, and that are just more fun.

In my country 4th edition is even more unpopular. Very hard to get books except 3 core. But i still manage to get a little collection :).

      Then just pirate things.
I mean...there's places you can get them on pdf for relatively cheap. Like, five finger discount cheap.

I remember once feeling disappointed with 4th edition because I saw the classes and powers as being far too similar. I saw this as a downside.
I don't anymore. After all, I play WoW. A game that is considerably similar to 4th edition.
And I don't see WoW as a bad game because the classes basically do similar things.
Like, it's a pretty neat thing that a blaster does somewhat similar things with their basic powers as each other, because it means I can choose the flavor and fantasy of my class without needing to give up functionality. I can still do my thing and contribute as a party member.
