    And remember if you are lost or nervous or anything speak to a policeman. London police are very used to tourists and are surprisingly helpful. If you feel confident enough, ask someone in the street or in a cafe or shop. Most of the time we Londoners are pretty safe, I don't think I've bitten anyone in years. :)

    Recently traveled to London and spent a good deal of my time alone. I, too, never felt unsafe. i think blending in (style-wise) is one of your best tips! Also, although CityMapper was my lifeline, I'd study my routes heavily before beginning them, so I didn't have my face in my phone the whole time.

    You give good advice and I love your channel! The first time I went to London, I walked fast and I wore a cross body bag. I didn't know where the hell I was going. These two ladies from Houston, TX followed me for a bit and then finally stopped me, asking for directions. I told them I was American and it was my first visit and I didn't know and they said they thought I was a Londoner because of the way I was walking and I looked like I knew where I was going which is why they were following me. LOL! I was like, "no I'm lost too." So we walked together and found our destinations! The year I lived there, I felt very safe.

    I traveled alone to London last year, and felt safe walking the streets solo, day or night. It's just as she says: be aware, and be confident (if you look scared, distracted, or nervous, it sort of makes you a target). For female travelers: invest in a travel purse that has metal cords through the shoulder/crossbody strap (it keeps thieves from cutting the strap and making off with your bag), and a locking mechanism for the zippers of the bag (to keep pickpockets from unzipping it when you aren't looking). I felt much better knowing my bag wasn't going anywhere!

    I live in Edmonton and have lived in Tottenham. These are areas which some may consider has a high level of crime. Let me tell you that London is safe. It is only unsafe if you are part of a gang, because gang members don't usually attack randomly, but only those who they would consider their enemies. As long as you keep yourself to yourself and don't carelessly display your wealth then you won't have any problems in London, even in the more deprived parts of the city.

    I travel to London every Christmas and most of my time I go to shows at night. This has me traveling alone at night on the tube or buses and never felt scared or uneasy. My only other advise is to have a pop socket or ring on your phone so you have a better grip on it when you're using it. People have had their phones stolen right out of their hand.

  • @lukejohnson8017
    @lukejohnson8017 4 роки тому +8

    I live in South London and this is my take on safety in the city:
    In terms of pickpocketing and theft, my main bit of advice is use your front pockets, be aware, and don't walk around in the street with your phone in your hand unless absolutely necessary. I had a flatmate who got his pinched out of his hand near our university, so it does happen. A lot of these people operate outside of tube stations, so be careful there too.
    As for more violent crime, it's highly unlikely you would get caught up in anything, even in less touristy areas. Most violent crime in the city is related to gang culture, and that's kind of a closed shop you won't see much of unless you are involved. There are cases of attacks due to mistaken identity, but again highly unlikely.
    As for muggings, I've been living here for five years and not been affected. There are probably a very small number of professional muggers, and the only other person who might stick you up is a drug addict. If you are aware of your surroundings though, they will look for easier targets anyway.
    London is very safe in general; re: terrorism, there's a minuscule amount of attacks each year. You're probably more likely to be struck by lightning than have one of these incidents affect you.

    • @Bajarangbal

    Not looking like a tourist is definitely a good tip. Like, don't wear your pro camera around your neck. In one week of my visit here I noticed that Londoners either walk swiftly and look confident and proud of themselfs or just look on the ground and basically look like any person walking. Don't talk too loud and don't laugh too loud, you don't want any attention. Never put your phone or wallet in the back pocket, I don't understand people that do that. If you have a bag, to be even more save, put your important or expensive stuff in the bottom and top it up with some jacket or hoodie. It doesn't help if someone steals the whole backpack, but if someone wants to just put their hand in your backpack, they won't bother with finding the stuff. To be fair, sticking your hand next to a hoodie in a backpack isn't the easiest. And don't put your stuff in the front pocket of your backpack, like those small ones. Put the stuff that you don't want to lose in the biggest section of your backpack, the one that has a contact with your back. Try to not look lost if you are.
    Just a few tips that I use when I'm travelling anywhere.

    It depends what you are doing. Late night walks on empty streets, not recommended. I mean just take an Uber it is a big city, and all kinds of crazy people live in London. I know people who been departed with their phone and robbed, so no London is not safe at night unless you live near a high street or in Zone 1. The truth is that London is as safe as you can afford.

    I lived in London for several years, I took the tube every day, I was pick-pocketed zero times, mugged zero times, suffered racial abuse never. But I have heard often of tourists carrying wads of cash in wallets placed inside jacket pockets being relieved of cash, credit cards, even passports on the tube. The number of pickpockets have increased in recent years too but the met police do try to catch them, unlike in some other European capitals where no one seems to care.

    There's an easy solution, wear a long coat and have your wallet in the front pocket of your pants which are already covered by the long coat so you'd have to be literally stripped for anyone to steal anything from you.

    I remember my sister, who exceeds academically but has -3 street smarts, went clubbing in London and came home the next day sans her iPhone. I asked her what happened and she said 'I left it on the bar when I ordered and it was gone!' - and although I know it's not her fault, some part of me wanted to scream at her. As said in the video staying safe in London is mostly to do with common sense and just being aware of your surroundings, and I actually feel safer in London than I do in my hometown

    He was the only one there other than my mom and I and he gave me such creepy eyes. Looking back on it, he may have been trying to traffic me. Or maybe he was just weird.
    But other than that, I saw police everywhere and the people I met were nice. People usually stayed away from each other so I never felt like anybody would pickpocket me or anything. I had a nice time.

    I would suggest women have a bag that zips or clips shut and to not have your purse/money wallet on top where it can be easily taken. Never put your bag on the floor beside you in a cafe, but if possible put bags together between your group and where anyone touching it will be in your field of view.

    As a Londoner I can say that while it`s true that London is not as safe as it was 25/30 years ago, for a city of its size and huge floating population it remains one of the safest large cities in the World. Most of the violent crime is gang related and won`t affect visitors unless they are extremely unlucky. The advice about cell phones is a bit extreme, every 3rd or 4th person on the street seems to be forever using theirs and I don`t know of anyone who has had their phone stolen from leaving it on a cafe/restaurant table though I`m sure there are cases of this happening. Unless you`re in a group taking Uber/taxi in the early hours of the morning is obviously common sense.

    I've lived in london 14 years and have never been pick pocketted, or even felt like someone was trying to. I know it happens, but the victims must really be making it easy for them. Just keep valuables on your trouser pocket or inside jacket pocket and you'll be fine.

    All good commonsense points. Will emphasise don't walk aimlessly with your phone out. I lived in London as a student 15 yrs ago and returned five years ago. I can definitely say, london in the main for tourists ie central london has been cleared up a lot. In general it is safe during the day and night. But like anything oyr saftey depends on our own behaviour ie if you're new to the place don't get drunk and walk back to your hotel. Have a plan with your friends etc

    Hi! I am travelling alone to London in March. Have been surfing and I see there are a lot of day tours for Bath, Stonhenge and Windsor. Have also seen day tours to Cotswold , Oxford etc. First question is whether these day trips are safe for women travelling alone especially to Cotswold, startford-upon Avon etc and secondly will a day your to bath, stonhengee and Windsor all in one day be too tiring ?

    • @loveandlondon
      @loveandlondon  7 років тому +1

      Hi Sansriti! Yes, they are COMPLETELY safe :) I think that a day trip to all of those is very rushed, but a lot of people do it. It's up to you if you just want to see everything even if just for a few moments. Personally, I think Stonehenge is definitely worth a miss.

    Hi here! Never been to London, but my Asian friend told me he wasn't dare to go out in London at night during a summer program at Imperial College, London when he was at high school (probably 16 years old). Is that true? I'm wondering if that's his perception only for a little bit "xenophobia" reason since Europeans are generally bigger physically. On the other hand, I heard from some other relatives saying London was absolutely fine, compared with continental metropolises, like Paris and Rome.

      I've lived in London for 40 years, it is extremely safe and you can walk anywhere in central London at any time. It's probably wise to stay away from parks and quiet roads in some outer areas after midnight , but even then you would have to be extremely unlucky to run into trouble.

    Be careful in bus stations. There are some people, who trick others by saying, than they need like 2,4 pounds for they bus or train ticket. While we waited bus for a few hours in Victoria's station, we saw like 3-4 charlatans who tricked people into this and then ran away, and they did not get into any train or bus. It is not a lot of money, but it's very dirty game. And most likely during the day they have pretty good earnings. So don't be fooled.

      LilllaVanilla Yep it happens all the time, it’s no big deal. You don’t have to give them anything, they’re not mugging, just asking. Just say you don’t have change, or better still if anyone approaches you & they look like a junkie, just keep walking.
