Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:
Monster Train is a strategic roguelike deck building game with a twist. Set on a train to hell, you’ll use tactical decision making to defend multiple vertical battlegrounds. With real time competitive multiplayer and endless replayability, Monster Train is always on time.
A clan where you want to put tanks behind weaker units, could not be tailored more for NL.
It's kind of funny. I think the thing that was hurting him the most was his persistence on using that tank unit in a way that was normally correct. Like every time it got dangerous it was because he had the tank and the champion and room for nothing else on his top floor (and no room to play the insane damage unit).
@@fallouthirteen Yea that really held him back, he basically had the top floor being completely useless.
@@cptKamina I think the thing that really held him back was nonsensical unit placement. So many times he threw away damaging units putting them at the front where they served zero purpose. Surprising no one NL would once again benefit greatly from slowing his roll.
@@Wilks228 He was putting them at the front to die so they could be brought back stronger, wasn't really nonsensical. At times he could have played a bit slower and got more value out of it, but he played this run really well for the most part, especially for a first Remnant run.
He also took the weakest/hardest form of the champion and still won, which was a great performance overall. The reform path has weird quirks like the champ unit having terrible stats but being more valuable on the first floor where it can reform units that die in any floor on the same turn. Reform 3 is usually overkill though, a single 'point' in one of the other paths turns the champ into a useful combat unit.

The Melting Remnant is basically a zombie/necromancer faction with a unique aesthetic and I love it.
yeah, candle people instead of undead zombies is really nice for a change! burnout, wickless, etc. great theme
It felt a bit silly to me at first, I mean you have giant horned demons, deep sea horrors, all-devouring earth monsters...and then living candles straight out of 'Beauty & The Beast'. But I kinda dig the Charles-Dickens-like character design and the gameplay is super fun, so yeah...
@@tophateyeball7198 I know this is an pls comment but I agree with you so much :D I got this game week ago and played basically without knowing much. My reaction was quite mixed at first when I unlocked the candlebros

Melting remnant has such amazingly good imp synergy, holy shit.
Just imagine - you can make every floor "the imp floor" and they'll have huge stats and can keep repeating summon effects etc. etc.
Yeah imps + candle bois makes for a good time, especially with the imps that repeat all summon effects.
They even have "give a minion endless" card
@@greindes1579 Endless is bad, you cannot reform an endless unit.

@@greindes1579 burnout is a very very small price to pay for the buff you get from reform.
The Parafin Thug's effect is on Slay, so he needs to kill things to get the 20 gold, not everytime *he* dies.

Somehow egg understands all the new terms in this clan but mistakes "Slay" which has been present since episode 1, still gotta give it to him for the pogged up run
@@Blaurot Nah he kept putting it on the first floor in the front so it would immediately die and basically never killed anything.
That bothered me for so long lol but only love for the egg 🥚
About halfway though the video right now and this was the first thing I noticed. Does he end up getting it? Either way, absolutely pogged out of my mind with this clan, I hope he plays it more often than every "x" video.

@@Awesomeness156 I wonder if people will be able to mod it. That kept Slay the Spire going for me for a lot longer but I'm really loving how upgrades work in this game so much more. Imagine the possibilities.

I once had Petty Thief with Holdover and +10 damage early and manage to farm 50g every turn. Good days.
This has quickly become my favourite series of yours. Every video is a POG in my day.
56:45 the dedication this man has to keeping a 14/1 alive and wasting 2 capacity is amazing.
Every time he called molded “holdover” I died a little inside. Never change NL.
The bit that gets me is that numerous times he *says* that he has to use it so that it comes back. And yet at the start of numerous battles he keeps not using it, denying himself early resses and buffs

Melting Remnant may be my favorite faction, the burnout/reform mechanic is a LOT of fun, and I love that the dregs and draffs stay useful because of it

How could you enjoy this, then? There's no tinted rocks for NL to ignore in this game...
'I think we have to prioritise this horned warrior getting as buffed as possible' does everything he can to prevent it dying. Putting it in back 90% of the time.
I really love Melting Remnant. They occupy such an interesting design space by caring about your dead units. It's something none of the other clans come close to doing.
Can't wait to see NL's reaction to the sheer stats of the final Burn Bright champion.
I lived long enough to experience NL completely nailing a new faction's strategy in first try and it's glorious.
Out of all the runs this one is by far my favorite, I love how the raising the dead aspect works and it just works so well for you
Gotta say, that was some IMPRESSIVE gameplay right there in the end that saved your bottom-side. There were some misplays but that didn't matter, most deserved W of the century.

I haven't seen through the video yet, but in case he never realized, the thug needs to KILL something to get the gold, not get killed. He has had slay units before.

NL out here protecting his units that have extinguish triggers by putting other units in front of them, never change my man. Was still a Pogged up run. Drowning in wealth even without understanding the 'Slay: 20 coins' unit.

Super happy that NL enjoyed his first run with The Melting Remnant and got a win.
They're probably my favorite clan to play. I really like pairing them with Umbra because the Morsels being eaten triggers all of the Harvest triggers and all of the feed buffs from the Morsels carry over when you Reform the units too!
I really like NL's galaxy brain works like "put down units first, and calculate enemy damage later" :P

The Melting Remnant is such a cool faction, the gradual upgrading of Burnout units over time is very interesting!
I never thought a run with this amount of resin could generate such a level of POGGERS
Ah shit, completely forgot he had resin. Was wondering which thing was making that votivary so strong.
Finally, NL has Melting Remnants unlocked. I'm gonna enjoy this so much. It is so much fun to play them and I feel that it might become his favourite clan just like it is mine. Love these dudes, love the twist on the meta, love the synergies, and love that they unlock last. They give a nice refreshing air to an already awesome, crisp game.
Any tips? Remnant is my weakest clan
@@Edaren I'm by no means an expert but I feel the key to Remnant is a small, compact deck. From your support clan you want either a tanky unit or a high damage unit, maybe both. Otherwise you should not get more units or spells unless it helps you death/rebirth cycle and you want to purge as much as possible.
Another tip I can think of after this run from NL is to not be afraid to let your champion die, assuming you have a way to reform him of course. Additionally, if you take the "Reform one random unit" upgrade on him, on your first turn you should not put him at the top. Let him be at the bottom and let something die in front of him, so you can start improving units from turn one.
The wincing at your misplays just makes it taste that much better when you find how to fix your mistakes and pog off - nicely done :3
Wow, the most exciting playthrough of Monster Train I've ever seen. That ending was truly nail-biting.

When NL took the Largestone on his armored unit, I thought for sure it was going to end the run. Thankfully his Draff got strong enough to pull through *and* he realized what went wrong. The best of all possible worlds, and an awesome run.
Since you had the opportunity for Transcendimp, I have to mention I had an absolutely POGGED run when I unlocked Melting Remnant. Reform plus Imps plus Transcendimp (which I eventually got to make endless so it could die easier vs getting the HP from Reform). Reform other imps, play Transcendimp in front, suddenly those 1/1 imps are doing like 80 damage a hit stacked across the floor from multiple rage triggers and enemies taking multiple aoe damage triggers.
Melting Remnants in general is a fun clan.
I think you’ve been confusing “consume” with “purge” for awhile now. Putting consume on your torches or whatever will not yeet them out of your deck forever, only per battle. So the utility goes up with that a lot. Purge will yeet itself forever. Solid big brain W brother!
I get the impression he just means forever for that battle. He's never seemed surprised that they are there the following battle. It just means the deck cycles faster, which NL seems to understand.
Wilks228 yeah that could be, talking semantics then so it’s really pointless. Obviously egg has achieved levels of pog in this game never before witnessed by mankind so it’s a moot point.
Absolutely amazing run, and with my favourite faction too. I love the Remnants, although my favourite champion is the one that burns out, but does INSANE damage.
I know you prefer Slay the Spire, but this game has gripped me more than StS ever did. Hope the series keeps on going!
Just a side note, the Paraffin Thug gets 20 Gold when he kills, not when he gets killed. But you probably realized that by now anyway, haha

Great run, things I want to say for this run is the build from top down. Ex. you have your champ on top floor and put units on bottom floor. The enemies on the second floor will go to top floor with full health and probably survive to attack the pyre. While if you put units on second floor instead of the bottom, then when the bottom floor comes up you have another turn to damage to them and repeat. One, more thing is to use the steel worker on the other floor, he isn't really getting incanted being on the top, and taking up the capacity on the top floor for damage units when you need them.
Masterful run, especially for your first time dealing with the mechanic. I am now salivating though, imagining that run with more imps and an uncrowned. That would have been truly disgusting. Please don't stop this Monster Gravy Train.
An easy halloween costume for Ryan would be sticking a candle to his head and becoming the rectal flicker.
Absolutely loving this series. Thanks for the fun NL, don't get to play a huge amount of games myself these days so vicariously playing them through you is super fun.
This run was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Very fun to watch and great plays at the end as well to clutch it out!
God I love the Melting Remnant. As soon as I unlocked them they became my favorite clan. You built your first Remnant deck basically the same as mine and you really gotta love how effective it is.
Oh also I'll have to reconsider cutting Dregs from my future Remnant decks but they're honestly really good with a few damage upgrades considering they start at 9 damage. It helps that you had Draff as your random starter cards, but when you're trying to build burnout with some of the later Remnant unlocks the dregs can be a cheap 1 capacity 0 cost damage spam option.
Great video. There are a lot of death triggers in this game, so I thought I'd summarize.
Extinguish: Triggered on that unit's death
Slay: Triggered on that unit killing another unit
Harvest: triggered on any unit on that floor dying (friend or foe).
Misinterpreting Slay as Extinguish cost you a lot of gold, although it did buff the mobster unit pretty quickly, so it wasn't all bad. Best of luck to you in your next Remnant run. Hope this helps. =)

Loving the series, it's great to see another roguelite deckbuilder. Brings me back to Spire days, but in a good way before it soured. Hope to see way more of this before you yeet it into the stratosphere.
The ability to see in real time how much damage you're going to do to a boss is such a nice addition. It makes you feel like such a galaxy brain player when you finally get the lethal red X after playing out a turn trying to minmax damage.
This deck was so op from the get go that this madman won it even while ignoring how good the draffs were in his deck, he kept buffing his warrior instead of the draffs, that had 1 capacity vs 2 of the warrior.
That ending was nuts, I can’t believe the rage play
Takes the trinket that allows for unit upgrades again, proceeds to avoid all opportunities to upgrade units via shops and tries to upgrade the same 3 spells every time with holdover for some reason.
Has a horned demon that has pinned his entire run on, refuses to make it a large unit so it can do more damage.
Has a unit with a slay trigger, refuses to recognise that fact and keeps saying "we are making a tonne of gold off this guy" when actually it was making the same 5 gold as every other unit that died pointlessly, had it killed someone it would have made 20 gold...also didn't bother to buff this unit to give it more strike power in order to get an easier slay.
Finally, a deck archetype that fits NL's ability to get units killed.
Dude the remnants mechanics are awesome. The clans are all so unique with such cool themes and mechanics. I hope they add some more in future dlc or updates
for anyone wondering, yes NL does not realize it's a slay trigger and not an extinguish trigger for the whole game
This faction is really interesting. I'm super impressed by how many truly unique mechanics the devs managed to come up with.
I had seen other episodes(not all yet) and i decided to watch this one out of order...
it took me from hating the melting, to being excited to try them again.
This egg and his pogged videos got me to buy this game around 1 am last night. It is now almost 11 am my time and I have not stopped playing. Damn you egg, damn you.
I still have no idea what's going on in this game but I'm here for it.

I love the Remnant Umbra combo, slay triggers on morsels so you can have automatic farming floors.

This episode got me yelling and begging at my phone for NL to not do any major mistakes...I wonder what would other people have said if anyone saw me.

You'll begin to notice how the different factions relate directly to the base principles of MTG colours.
Putting the largestone on had me pulling my hair out, I have to imagine this is how people felt during sts, but props for winning regardless the run built was so powerful

I play the game without the music, because I'm listening to other stuff. The only time I hear the music is on NL playthrough and I actually like it a lot.

Would love some tips on Remnant because it's my weakest clan
NL, as a heads up. When you get to the boss stage the burnout timers for units to self destruct tick down everytime the boss attacks. So even if you have the largest tank in front of a burnout 1 unit, after that unit attacks once he will still die even though the boss has several more attacks due to the Relentless status.
