You’re wrong about Optimus and Bolster. He doesn’t require any other creatures on the board. I put together an Optimus Prime deck immediately after I realized that he boosters at the end of each turn and if he’s the only creature you control, he’ll just bolster himself. So if you can play him, give him haste, and bolster him by 2 (or play and wait to swing with him next turn), he’ll Convert into a 4/8 with 2 +1/+1 counters on him already. Then he’ll Bolster himself 4 times before it comes back around to your turn. So on the second turn he’s out, he can be a 10/14 and then be suited up with equipment to give him some kind of evasion and double strike. He’ll start one-shotting people on that second turn he’s out. There’s ways to make that work, and he’s in the right colors to give him protection from removal.
@@breakingblackmagic7617 yep. Bolster’s rules text says, “Choose a creature you control with the least toughness or tied for the least toughness among creatures you control. Put N +1/+1 counters on that creature” That means Optimus will automatically Bolster himself if he’s the only creature you control.
I mean, even if this is true, Voltron isn't exactly the best at defending against going wide strategies. It's a cool interaction, one that I want to try out though!
@@nerdgoodness7656 that’s true, with the exception that Optimus has resilience to board wipes. If he’s in his robot form, he just comes back as a truck when killed. So against a go wide strategy, you can reset the board and keep swinging
I brewed and played a Megatron deck tonight with a friend group who was okay with me proxying the card (since ofc it isn't out yet). Played early enough, even something like a signet or talisman aimed at an opponent's 1/1 is enough to set Megatron up, find someone with no blockers or utility creatures they want to keep to deal 7 commander damage, and then drop a Myr Battlesphere, Meteor Golem, or Spine of Ish Sah. Goblin Welder is of course great for trading a Myr token you have laying around for the Myr Battlesphere you just blasted out. And it's worth noting the tokens that Osgir makes copy the entire card, including the mana value. Rune of Mortality is a useful aura to ensure the 'ammunition' tramples over and gets to flip Megs, and unlike most auras won't fall off when he stops being a creature. I actually need to amend my deck to include some colorless mana sinks so I can do something with all that mana he makes and I've already dropped down a Triplicate Titan from hand.
I am putting all 13 that fit in a Breya deck and using all sorts of Artifact Creature - Humans to represent the Headmasters and Targetmasters and a bunch of Reconfigure creatures to represent Minicons. I don't care if the deck is good or not, I have been a Transformers fan since before I can remember and this has me so hyped. If nothing else, I want to make a deck around Goldbug since he was my absolute first Transformer toy. Bumblebee is my favorite Transformer of all time too.
As the weird kid that play goad deck, I think slicer is a good card to give to people that tried to evade goad by not summoning anything. It's also fun seeing Him hopping over people's board at every upkeeps.
This actually got me back into mtg and built a new deck around Magnus. It’s quite a powerhouse (especially when you mix in cards which put counters on any artificers/creatures when the enter the battlefield)
I’ve already built Megatron, and I think you may have undervalued the Neheb effect. It’s incredibly easy to fling an artifact and remove a players only blocker and hit them for at LEAST 7, then immediately flip back. I had it make 36 the other day by splitting the damage between two players, and then I used that mana to Exsanguinate 😂
My Megatron deck is currently banned in my playgroup. You're hitting for more than 7, because converting means you dealt excess damage already. It's so sweet, and you get to replace your creature with potentially more than one other artifact creature. I've got Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa as one of my recursion effects, unearthing to spam huge damage for 3 mana feels so good.
the thing with Jetfire is that even if he has counters on him on his Vehicle mode, you can still convert him. it's "UUU: Convert Jetfire, *then* Adapt 3." If he has any counters, he'll still flip, then try and put those counters and fail. You can then remove those counters to add mana and flip him back to his Vehicle mode. The only issue with it is that the ability on his front face *isn't* a mana ability, because it targets, so anything that prevents you from activating non-mana abilities will prevent you from adding the mana. Also: Flamewar is even better than 'just a bomat courier'. If Flamewar dies, you don't lose the exiled cards like Bomat does. She isn't looking for the cards she exiled, she's looking for cards you own with intel counters on them. Removal doesn't lock you out of the cards she's stashed away!
Think you undervalued Cylconus quite a bit. There multiple ways to boost his power cheaply (blackblade e.g.) and then give him doubstrike allows him to deal regular damage, which then flips him before second damage is dealt, and you immediately get extra beginning phase. Very powerful card I'd say
What I like about these cards is that they are nice, but not the best build arounds for their strategies. So you can use them as a commander or in the 99, but there's no... Oh I'm building a Mardu aggro deck and need Megatron vibes.
These are pretty cool, I love vehicles so I was pretty excited to try and get these. Though, they don't really feel like they fit in my Shorikai deck, so I guess I'll have to see what a Soundwave deck could look like if I can get my hands on one.
What if you don’t make a commander deck with these and instead make a standard deck with 4 of all of these and nothing else. How stupid/awesome would that be?
Also, @15:58 it's an older card, but it checks out.. From Mirroden "Energy Chamber" (At the beginning of your upkeep, choose one: Put a +1/+1 counter on target artifact creature you control or an energy counter on target non-creature artifact you control)
The cards are pretty sweet and I'm excited that they are being made, but man i don't like the art on magic cards, it litterly looks like someone made a custom card on mtgcsrdsmith and used a image from Google. Don't get me wrong I love the art style itself, very nostalgic and awesome, just looks weird on a card
Slicer is much better than you said, that double strike for turn 3-4 makes really hard to most edh decks to have something stronger on table, make it mandatory to block him, in the other a correct deck build should allow him to be stronger anyway.
Completely true. a 3/4 double strike you can't sacrifice that has to attack is annoying, but that same creature with 1-2 equipment on it is instant death for 2-3 players.
Soundwave was my favorite transformer when i was little so i am absolutely building a commander deck around him. I'm okay with the bots being a bit clunky since as crossover cards they're better as casual pieces.
I started brewing a Cyclonus deck with equipment and voltron things, but realized that they would all fall off on my opponent's turn. back to the drawing board with that one! But I will inevitably build one of these generals, I just need to decide on a strategy/theme
So are they Commander decks? Like Warhammer? Or are they just in packs? Because it seems I don't know if I could play with transformers without a full deck of transformer theme things. It would feel weird to cast
I think the conclusion fights with the tone of the rest of the video. Almost each individual card has a lot of cool text, "*but it has to attack*". Each time you say this you sound disappointed or underwhelmed, but then at the end you're happy they're not pushed, and creature combat is healthy for commander? Heavily mixed signals I love a lot of these cards, I've already built Megatron and Optimus Prime lists. Even when there's a ceiling on new cards/commanders, they can still be extremely cool and flavorful
As someone who grew up watching the old animated transformers movie I’m glad they made two different arts styles one being cartoon version. Star scream and megatron will be mine.
Ive been thinking of adding the UB transformer to my Scarab God deck because of that extra beggining phase you get but since it costs so much and theres combat involved ive been second guessing wether to get that card or not
I just opened it today and it was my first thought. I think it's worth it since you can reanimate, and that way it only need to attack once before it converts. Seems decent enough in my opinion.
The only thing I really dislike about these cards is that transforming them is not a may ability. They look clunky, they'll transform when you'll not want it and it's gonna be hard to get value reliably because often they'll be on the wrong side
Still hate ALL the universes beyond without confirmed in-universe alternatives. Even 40k, but especially the ones without thematic similarities with magic.
I thought I saw a promise that they would all be reprinted with non-UB Magic themes, but when I went to search this up, it applied only to Secret Lair sets, not to other Universes Beyond products. So, even though I like these myself, I agree they should make 1:1 in-universe cards for people who don't share my enthusiasm.
i am making a +1+1 commander deck and i think to put in optimus and blaster and i find out about the transformers being in the brothers war i was happy and was thinking on using blaster as the commander but it become very limited so instead i am going to use the first sliver with maskwood nexus
I still think Megatron should transform into an Artifact Equipment card instead of a tank.. Tanks are cool, but these are all G1/barely G2 iterations of themselves & Starscream & Soundwave both have used Megs to put down Autobots more times than I can *COUNT* & to negate that potential is kinda meh.. Give the equipped creature +3/+0 first strike (cuz ranged attack) & either death touch or RFG.. Am I wrong??🤔
With a lot of these Universes Beyond cards, it really feels WOTC made sure to keep their power in check, to avoid them seeing too much play and people getting angry at seeing them too often or being too expensive They all seem cute and somewhat underpowered cards that do flavourful things
::sigh:: Fine, more commander build-arounds, ho-hum. I think if I’d do anything with these I’d build them as Rule 0 4-color ‘all autobots’ and ‘all deceptions’ decks. It’s annoying that they don’t really play nice with one another.
