I repair bikes for my church and this same bike was donated by a local bike shop. As I got into it I have to work on the shifting and that pretty much lead me to you. Every problem I have you have already solved. Thanks!
Man you have no idea how helpful your video was I have a 1960s Skyway from Japan 3-speed banana seat bike and my girlfriend bought it for me as a present I remember we give over a hundred for it I don't remember exactly how much but I took it out riding that one night and it wasn't grabbing all three years and I got worried I called a couple of bike shops around by where I live and everything else trying to figure out what I could do to save it because I absolutely love this bike they told me I'd have to order new cable and all kinds of stuff your video showed me how to fix my issue thank you so much now I can go back to dusting people with it
thanks for the video.. It helped me fix my wives old oakwood ladies 3 speeder. the hub and shifter weren't identical to yours but you helped me understand how these work. Coming from 10 speeds to triple cranksets I didn't realise you had to stop pedaling to shift these babies. Now that she's finally got out of third gear she can climb some of the less steep hills around us here in the foothills of Colorado Springs. Once she can learn to steer straight and stay upright I'll try to buy her a touring bike.. Gotta learn how to walk before you can run..she's a bit wobbly !Like I was after coming in 2nd in a criterium back in the 70s...celebrated a bit to much !
Thanks for posting this. I am rehabbing a donated 60's-era ladies Schwinn identical to the one you have in this vid except for color. It will go to a couple of Nepali refugee teenaged girls. I had to repair a bearing race since I could not find a new one of correct size and also had to straighten the lever on the bell crank and buy a new shift cable. So when I got it all back together I could not find the right gears. Messed with it for awhile and decided to try the internet. Voila! There you were! Now I'll get it right in the morning and they'll get their bike in the afternoon.
failed miserably.I have two issues. There is no setscrew to control how far to screw the bell crank on, and the replacement cable requires a retainer on the end that I tried to use solder for and it pulled off when I shifted to low.
Hi, I also have an old folding bike,my question is, does the gear cable come with that barrel thing attached already, the part that screws on to the rear gear mechanism?
This is a great video. I have an older Men's KENT bike with the same 3.3.3 hub and shifter. Do you know where I can get the vintage shifter cable with the knurled adjuster? The one on my bike is all buggered up and needs to be replaced. Thanks!
Hello Excellent video thank you to post I have a Shimano 3CC Hub without the changes mechanism Please could you tell me Does the shift rod have to have a head or not? They sell them on eBay and there are with and without head Thank you
HI RJ...I have followed your steps re adjustment for the 3 Speed Shifter but for some reason when I try and put the Shifter into the Lowest Gear (1) it slips back into Gear (2).... There is an adjustment Screw with a spring for the cable up near the Gear Shifter which you can turn with your fingers to tighten or loosen the cable...What do I do with this adjustment at the start of your process...Thank You RJ. Any help would be Greatly Appreciated...Jody (Australia) :)
Brilliant video just what i needed! I'm restoring an old chopper style Bonanzarad bike with this style adjuster however the adjuster mechanism that has the push rod is broken and the rod is missing ( it was a barn find) do you know the part numbers for these spares? Its the style with the N on it. Thanks in advance!
This is a pull rod. Actually it's called an indicator pin. They come in different lengths. You will have to research your hub figure out which one you need.
Gr8 vid I ve a problem i wish u help me I ve shimano nexus sg-3r45 gear The 1st gear is ok but when i turn to 2 nd gear there is no response when change to 3rd gear the 2 nd gear work and i cant reach the 3rd gear do u think the problem is with the cable 🤔or what ?
Just got one of these to repair. Thanks for how to set it up. Unforch the previous owner left the top head bearing out and it ruined the fork threads. Amazing!Looking for a front fork.
Hey RJ, how would I go about replacing housing for this cable? Can I use any housing or do I have to buy an entirely new cable/housing specifically for this shifter?
Can you please measure and tell me how long is the "pushrod"? i may have lost mine and i may need to make another one from some kind of solid metal wire. Thanks
Hi, I enjoy your videos. A friend has a Shimano 3 speed, thumb-shift though, not twist grip. The gears do shift but there is no ‘click’, just a smooth back and forth, which means the gears can slip. Perhaps there is a ratchet inside that shifter?
Hi RJ I am currently overhauling a great little, Japanese made, Apollo. She has a Shimano Cartridge style 3 speed hub. Your video's have been really helpful in taking me through this process but I am having trouble trying to replace the cable, as it appears to have a stopper at each end? Any suggestions welcomed! With thanks Louise
NEED a video on changing the cable on the newer model shimano 3speed hub. There are a million videos on EVERY aspect of bicycle mechanics, but I can only find one on changing the cable on the NEW shimano 3 speed hubs.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Thanks. I finally figured it out. Connecting the cable to the bell housing is the tricky part for me. You have to keep the cable tight, WHILE lining up a piece between the 2 white lines. si.shimano.com/pdfs/dm/DM-SG0005-01-ENG.pdf
The year is now 2023. I bought a bike about one and a holf years ago with this same transmission but it looks much different now. There is a clear plastic window with yellow lines and a yellow blob that is set in relation to the yellow lines. I wonder is the old style shifters are recycled by now.
RJ, having trouble getting a brand new Shimano Nexus 3 speed shifter to work. It seems very tight, only works 2 gears and won't return to 1st gear. Any clue what may be causing the problem? Any advice is appreciated and thanks for the videos!
OoOooOoh! So the Shimano is not like the Sturmey Archer. I have long been looking for a bolt that screws into the hub, just like in the S-A, but I couldn't find one. Why, because it doesn't exist! Figures, different company, different set up. Thanks for clearing this up.
Rj, hi, i got a brazilian bike, "caloi formula c" and i found the original shifter stick for this bike; its a Shimano gt3. the thing is that i dont know how to install it, maybe you have a video about it or some tips because i dont want to broke it because its really hard to find another one.
I need help to find the exact cable for this bike, I don't know the exact name of the cable to look for. I have this same bike and my shift cable broke. This cable is particular in comparison to the standard ones now because it has a thin head on the wheel side so that the adjustment cylindre can slide over it. Can someone Help me find this cable for my Hawthorne bike? thanks
I haven't replaced a cable on one of these. I know there are some universal fit cables for 3 speed internal hubs. www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000AOA0G0/ref=nosim/youtube25-20
These are dissapearing resource. If you can think of a way to fabricate this kind of shifter cable, it would be awesome! I've been trying to think of some ways but they all are half assed one way or another.
newbie question, I want to use three hub wheel on a bike without any shifting, is there a way to fix the system on the lower gear for use as a single-speed bike?
I have an issue I was hoping you could give me some advice on. The rear wheel my Murray 3-Speed is locking up when I pedal forward. Seems like it's self tightening. The shift cable isn't even connected. Any ideas on why this would be happening? Or how I can fix it?
Hola !! El eje de la maza se rompio y me gustaria saber donde puedo conseguirlo, vivo en la ciudad de mexico; mi bici es una MARQUIS series 3 speeds tauring !!! Muchas gracias !!

Thank you!! Every other tutorial only really ever talks about adjusting the barrel adjuster, this was much more thorough and helped me a lot.
I followed his advice exactly and it fixed my wife's bicycle gears. Great video, great advice.
Internet for the win! Thank you for posting. This will help me turn a $5 garage sale purchase into a rideable Huffy3. Cheers👍
That's incredible. So easy! I'm thinking a 3 speed internal is the thing I should use for my commuter so this was really helpful. Thanks.
This video made my day, the speed hub is adjusted now. Thanks a lot!

Great information! Just enough to get a newly-acquired 1970s folding bicycle adjusted and working!
Thats what I got today. 50 years old, bit of rust. I just replaced the the tires and have a perfect city bike
Hi, I also have an old folding bike,my question is, does the gear cable come with that barrel thing attached already, the part that screws on to the rear gear mechanism?
Always appreciate these videos
Thanks for this! I may now able to adjust our bike from japan with a gear like this
Excellent video, could not have done it without your instruction's.

Hello
Excellent video thank you to post
I have a Shimano 3CC Hub without the changes mechanism
Please could you tell me
Does the shift rod have to have a head or not?
They sell them on eBay and there are with and without head
Thank you
A question, does the end of the cable that you screw on come as a complete unit with the bit you screw on attached?
Thanks, will use to build up my Murray Eliminator
Catalin Iordache, you can find push rods on ebay sometimes.
RJ The Bike Guy Ok, i'll give it a try.
***** Thanks.
Any video ON chainless RIMS removal from frame ?

Sorry, I don't.
Just got one of these to repair. Thanks for how to set it up. Unforch the previous owner left the top head bearing out and it ruined the fork threads. Amazing!Looking for a front fork.
perfect video - thank you good sir!
Hello, wondefull video
Question, is the tiny part your pointing the screw driver swappable with the nexus 3
Hey RJ, how would I go about replacing housing for this cable? Can I use any housing or do I have to buy an entirely new cable/housing specifically for this shifter?
They sell cables specifically made for these. Just replace the whole thing.
This was very useful.
Can you please measure and tell me how long is the "pushrod"? i may have lost mine and i may need to make another one from some kind of solid metal wire. Thanks

I haven't messed with the shifters really.
Great info. Is that bike a Roddy?
No. But have one.

Sounds like sticking cable.
If I pull on the cable housing and release it, it'll go back into first. I'm stumped.

Where do you buy the shift cable? It has 2 crimped ends. It’s not a standard shift cable.

You can probably find on on ebay.

I followed your instructions to the T. 1st gear won’t la”click” in. It’s low the shifter doesn’t travel far enough to engage 1st. Any ideas?
Do you have any information on how to replace all the cable? From the shifter to the wheel hub?
I should do a video on that. They sell replacement cables, but they are different than the original cables.
+RJ The Bike Guy yeah, i bought one but I'm not sure how to change it. I'll look around, thanks for the reply!
These are dissapearing resource. If you can think of a way to fabricate this kind of shifter cable, it would be awesome! I've been trying to think of some ways but they all are half assed one way or another.
Any recommendations on where to find a replacement cable for this shifter?
newbie question, I want to use three hub wheel on a bike without any shifting, is there a way to fix the system on the lower gear for use as a single-speed bike?
Probably a better solution would be going to a single speed wheel. Maybe a coaster brake.

Overhaul the hub. I have a few different videos on that. One of them might be for your hub.
NICE!!
Thanks. Very useful vid.
Anyone knows if it is compatible with Nexus shifter?
Where can I get parts
Como funcionan los engranes d cambios
where buy this crankbell?... thanks

They don't make e'm any more. Try E Bay
how did you attach the cable to the back piece? mine falls out when I tighten it
What do you mean?
Can that inner wire be replaced?
Cable? Yes.
Anybody know the indexing of these hub ? or if a modern shinano 3speed rapidfire shifter would work ? Thanks
Golden Sim Did you find and answer for this?
Hola !! El eje de la maza se rompio y me gustaria saber donde puedo conseguirlo, vivo en la ciudad de mexico; mi bici es una MARQUIS series 3 speeds tauring !!! Muchas gracias !!
You can try eBay. These old Shimano 3 speed hubs were not durable.
That's the old style hub maybe 1979 or older. Newer Shimano hubs are very different
Mine is made in 2011, and has such a system.
My shifter on my 3 speed shimano does not click into gear why.
Maybe the shifter is broken. I have not worked on your bike.
I have a problem, my shifter doesn't look like either of these.
Why don't you show the top part
okay but how do you connect the shifter lmao
