  • Finding a new trail to explore can sometimes be challenging. I admit I have done my share of scrolling around on google earth looking for dirt roads near by. Once and a while I find a new trail we can venture off onto, but most of the time the trails are gated or have signs saying private property.
    The first ¾ of a mile of the trail was concrete and honestly I was worried this wasn’t going to be a very good trail. Thankfully I was wrong and we soon hit the dirt!
    This trail had a great variety of packed dirt, rocky sections, and rutted out muddy sections. The scenery was constantly changing. One moment we were in a canyon, the next a mountain cliff and then in a canopy of pine trees…. The drive never got boring.
    The trail was narrow for the most part and we did encounter some fellow off-roaders, but we were always able to find a good passing spot. The Holy Jim Trail is located near the peak and we had to be cautious of blind spots for hikers making their way to and from the trail head.
    Santiago Peak was pretty spectacular with 180 degree views of Riverside County.
    The drive down the mountain along the Indian Truck Trail was just as great as the drive up. Except for a few off-road motorcycles, we pretty much had the 11 mile drive down all to ourselves. The trail ends behind a new housing neighborhood and if you didn’t know what you were looking for, finding the trail here wouldn’t be easy as it isn’t marked.
    This was a great adventure and if you are looking for an easy trail in the Riverside County area, and I definitely recommend this one.

    What a coincidence. I was driving in Newport Beach the other day (where I live) and saw your license plate. Thought it was a good one. Then I search UA-cam for trails in OC and the first one I pick I see your plate again. Small world this interweb. Good video.

    Great video! I took my family up there to the peak (lookout point) yesterday. We took Indian truck, then the Main Divide road to the top. Took my basically stock 2007 2wd Tahoe. Made it up no problem, thankfully. Got a few scratches from bushes/branches, but that's part of the fun.
    I actually want to do the Bee canyon. to Idyllwild trail run soon too.

    Luckily up here in NH we have a ton of class 6 roads to wheel. But some people don't tread lightly and make s bad name for the responsible people. That's why I was glad to join exploring Anaheim they are all about keeping the trails open. If you are ever up to the NH area let me know and we can hit some trails!

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  8 років тому

      +Bearded Jeeper I’m all about tread lightly! I will be attending Tierra De Sol’s 54th Desert Safari event in 2 weeks and they are our regional nonprofit that helps fight the environmentalist from shutting down our trails. It’s important to support all the groups who keep us out on the trail. I would love to wheel in NH someday!

    After all the rain this season, I would certainly not call this trail "easy" any longer. Trails have been compromised, and the ruts are huge. There was a major mudslide up there awhile ago, 4 vehicles were caught in it.

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  7 років тому

      Oh wow, I hadn't heard about the mudslide. Maybe I need to make another trip up there and check to the new terrain.

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  8 років тому +6

      I would say 95% of the trail you would be fine. There were only a couple rutted & rocky sections were you may want 4 wheel drive, but you might be able to manage it with high clearance and some good off road tires.

    Is your Jeep a 2x4? I live right near Santiago Peak and recently got a Jeep - 2010 Wrangler 2x4 - and want to start exploring - I am wondering if 4 wheel drive is really necessary?

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  7 років тому

      Nope, 4wd here, but Santiago Peak is pretty easy and you should be fine as long as you stay on the main trail.

    TrailRecon have they renamed Mount. SaddleBack.? because 35+ years ago that,s what it was called by all of the locals.there is a trail that if it,s still open. it,s called Sherman,s Jeep Trail. it,s near Lake Isabella. my Dad and some family friends went on it back in 1976. at the peak of Mount SaddleBack the Forestry Dept. had a fire tower there. it,s high enough that some times it gets snow.

  • @MarioLoco03

    Honest question: was 4wd necessary for these trails?

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  7 років тому +2

      It's been a long time since I've been up there, but I believe there was a section at the top where it was necessary. You could probably do the whole thing in 2wd with good tires and a good line.

      Ran this trail dozens of times from 1990-2013. We used 4WD just in case, but it never really required it, and often times the USFS would gate off the difficult areas.
