  • Are Samosa and Chips Behind India’s Diabetes Crisis? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
India's apex medical research body, the Indian Council of Medical Research, has conducted a first-of-its-kind study. It warns against samosas, chips, and fries, linking fried and processed foods to the country's diabetes epidemic. As the "diabetes capital of the world," over 101 million Indians are affected. With junk food consumption rising, global diabetes cases could double by 2050, impacting 1 in 7 people. What is the solution?

Undoubtedly, the Indian diet (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian) is carbohydrate-heavy. It lacks the consumption of raw veggies, and most of the dishes are overcooked and fried.
I completely reversed my Type 2 diabetes after being diabetic for over fifteen years. I did this by going to plant-based food that is extremely lean on carbs. I eat mostly raw veggies or lightly cooked, fermented, and sprouted dishes. I stay away from processed food.
The overall wellness has improved drastically. I am completely off my diabetic medication and so also blood pressure-lowering drugs. My lipid panel is perfectly within the range. I register 110/70 blood pressure. My resting heart rate is around 70.
The proof is in the pudding. I hike 10 to 12 km on weekdays. If I am not hiking, I ride a stationary bike for 60 to 70 minutes and get my heart over 130 for at least 20 minutes.
Last year, I completed a 100-km Mont Blanc hiking trek. This year, I hiked in the Swiss Alps for ten days, covering another 100 km.
I am nearing 69 years of age and a person of Indian origin.
All this improvement was accomplished by a change of diet, regular exercise, yoga, and meditation. Yes, meditation is a must to stimulate your vagus nerves (para-sympathetic nervous system.) One can easily meditate daily by listening to Sanskrit shlokas for a few minutes.
The bottom line is that the Indian diet is the biggest culprit. Restore your metabolism by eating plant-based food, especially that is raw, sprouted, fermented, and lightly cooked. Give up on fried food and desserts. Eating raw and lightly cooked veggies, fruits, and nuts will replenish your microbiomes in the gut. These microbiomes have been depleted or eliminated completely by eating ultra-processed food, antibiotics, and exposure to chemicals.
I am on one meal a day and practice intermittent fasting daily. I am more energetic and healthy by eating less and infrequently.
Watch videos posted on UA-cam by Dr. Pradip Jamnadas. I followed his advice, and it has changed my well-being completely.

If us Indians understand one thing clearly, that'll improve their health significantly. It is that packaged food products that are marketed to us are sold to us with the intention of making profits. When profits is the focus, taste and shelf life become important and nutritious content becomes unimportant. You'd never see an add for tomato, cabbage, banana or an apple. Because in it's raw form, it is not highly profitable for companies to sell. But you'd definitely see ads for tomato topped margarita pizza, burgers with cabbage/lettuce, a banana split ice cream or an apple smoothie because upon processing them, they become profitable.
Secondly, processed food is not food. It is a product. We are meant to consume real, whole foods, not 'products'.
In short, people need to be skeptical before eating anything. Researching about nutrition and reading packet labels should become a norm.

There's also a reason, I think people eat junk food or outdoor food is that people are so busy that they don't have time to cook food at home thus eating whatever is readily available. But along with all these problem, I think more and more people are becoming health conscious and not eating junk food.

If you see any Indian with beer belly, then chances are over 90% that he/she has diabetics or pre diabetic. mind also plays a good role in processing food in body so yoga, meditation and a non-crooked mind will keep away most illnesses even cure if it affects the body. our brains are said to be a projection of the super consciousness or illusion(maya).

All our food we eat is carbohydrates, fried food, too much sugar, biscuits, no exercise, the shopkeeper free home delivery, pizza delivery with soft drink, Watching cricket matches and eating junk food all night, walking and buying your grocery and vegetables have become a act of shame. No one goes to traditional markets, every thing us shopped at mall or online app and delivered home, most gym goers drop out in 3 to 4 months. Parks are rare, we live in apartment which is occupied by furniture most of them for show, leaving hardly any place to walk or exercise. Shopping is online too. Gym and swimming pools in big buildings are rarely used and always as good as empty. Exercise is looked down, sitting in front of TV is the smartest thing one can do. All these contribute to diabetes and fat people trying to walk like penguins in old age. Knee problem, back problem, heart problem, unnecessary political debate creates stress too. Too much time in front of TV.
