I don't need to imagine how it smells, I've delivered to restaurants that were having these pumped out and it's brutal. Especially when it's 90 degrees outside and you have to deliver to 5 restaurants, all in the same area, and you can only park in 1 spot. The smell gets trapped in your truck and you get to smell it all day.

I’ve had to clean these nasty pits by hand with a scraper, ladle, and 5 gallon buckets before. Thank the good Lord I got out of food service and manufacturing! 🙏

Kind of thinking of getting into this line of work, seems to pay pretty well, and I stop at truck stops a lot and those reek of #1 and #2 all the time, so I'd have a leg up on the smell.

for grease traps and others with solid items, I'd put a reducer fitting on the end of the pickup tube, then items large enough to get stuck in the pipe/hose or fittings wont fit past.
I guess you could also do a dedicated pickup tube with reducer and increaser up at the top. 😁

I dig holes for a living by hand. There are times where we busted the pipe. We’re all the toilet water and feces goes through and it’s falling all over us lol was not fun. You guys do it that danger every day
