- Tony the Tiger! He is REAL!!! I had to turn 40 years old and travel all the way to Florida to meet THIS g-r-r-eat childhood hero of mine! You're seeing that right, I've just met none other than the REAL Tony the Tiger! TONY THE TIGER!One of the world's most beloved mascots, the face of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes since 1952. He is so big, huggable and cuddly! And a really strong tiger!
While I wasn't a mascot nut during my childhood and couldn't even enjoy cereals due to my birth defect that has me rely on a feeding tube, Tony the Tiger is the earliest mascot character I can remember in my life. Back when I was around 5 years old in the late 1980s-early 1990s, there were TV commercials with him in Switzerland, with his voice actually being dubbed into Swiss German. I remember one of the spots had a hockey theme, the other had the animated version of him rollerblading with a bunch of children. Unfortunately, due to legal reasons that largely prohibit cartoon characters being used to advertise certain food to children within the EU, Tony is hardly used anymore in Europe. If he appears on Frosted Flake boxes, then it's only very tiny artwork or none at all and there are no mascot appearances of him on the continent.
Glad this is different in the U.S.. Tony is widely regarded as an American culture icon and is still prominently featured on Kellogg's boxes and in TV commercials as millions and millions of families start their day with him.
I'm a huge fan of mascots and also big cats, so any big cat mascot is a huge deal with me - even more so if it's one of the world's most recognizable ones! Mascotting is a wonderful performance art as you can make kids of all ages smile without saying one single word, but just by being there as a cool, cuddly, huggable tiger that everyone knows from their childhood.
It was g-r-r-r-eat meeting you, Tony! You are one cool cat and you made a little dream come true by spending a moment with me! Love you lots!❤
