  • The role of a facilitator sits at the foundation of a successful workshop. As a facilitator, you don’t determine the result or the destination, but you are the North Star in the journey. Whether the group makes it out of the woods in one piece, rests a lot on your shoulders.
If you’re new to facilitating or curious about what’s involved, here's a video of some tips on how you can be a "Pro" at facilitating workshops or meetings. Having said that, we're constantly learning ourselves and it's important to always remember to optimise your methods. Enjoy!

This is incredible advice, and I appreciate that it goes beyond “how to set up a retreat” to “how to make a retreat successful in its goal and make everyone feel included.”

Great video! I love your ideas regarding the naysayers and interacting with the overall energy in the room.

I loved the last tip. A participant would surely wonder what was the impact on the product, as they have invested their time in the workshop. Also, it would help us as the facilitators to build a positive bond with them and they will come back more confidently in future workshops.

Hi Abdun, as a design leader there are things that you can control and there are also things that you can’t control.
You can’t control talent, diligence, work ethic, personalities… Those intangibles. But you can control systems, processes, standards, guidelines, procedures, etc.
So to answer your question, we think it’s best to focus on the those things that you can control, to groom and support your juniors to flourish along the same path of your design standards. That is why design systems are crucial these days as part of this standards. It would also help junior designers onboard themselves more efficiently.
On top of all this, of course the recruitment process is also critical to minimise the risk of hiring someone who isn’t right for the team/role. Setting expectations is key.
